MEDICARE WIN FOR LIAM
Liam Callaghan (12) was the winner of Saturdays open competition sponsored by Medicare Strabane with an excellent score of 42 pts on what was a difficult day for scoring on the course, with some difficult pin positions and very little run on the ball due to the recent downturn in the weather. Liam got to the turn with a tidy 21pts on his card despite a double bogey at the 3rd hole, further doubles followed at the 10th & 11th holes before Liam steadied the ship to finish one under par for the last seven holes to win the event by two clear shots from the runner up Peter Doherty (5) on 40pts,third came in form club Secretary Terry Doherty (12) with 39pts with Andrew Connolly (10) fourth on the same total, John Tinney (28) was another player to finish on 39 pts and he took fifth place, the gross prize went to Ryan McGowan (6) with 32 gross pts, Senan Roarty (10) was the winner of the front nine prize with 20pts with the back nine prize going to Mark Gillespie (12) with 22pts.Please note that the C.S.S. on Saturday was 70 or 35 pts. The presentations for this competition along with the prize giving for the “Label Menswear” “Kennedys Financial” and the “McGettigans Applegreen” will take place on Friday 21st September at 8.30pm sharp!

Thursday Club week 2
There is an excellent entry of almost 70 players so far in this year’s Thursday Club. There was an extremely close finish to week 2 of the competition with three players separated only on break of tie on 37 pts the winner was declared as John McMenamin (14) Martin Finlay (16) was the runner up and Paul McGill (6) took third place, Barry Patterson (7) was the gross winner with 29 pts. There were 6x2’s of which two came at the 2nd hole which was omitted for payment, the hole out this coming Thursday is the 7th Hole. New members are still very welcome to join.

Monday Club Week 1
It’s a sure sign the golfing season is nearing an end as the popular Monday teams event has begun, the winners in the first week were Eric Reid, Danny McGinley, Cahir Doherty and Patsy Wilson with 86 pts for the 15 holes in play, the runners up with 85 pts were Robert Bell, Chris McDermott, Oliver McNally and Kevin Keegan. Third place went to Paul O’Hare, Kevin Gallagher, Stewart McFeeters and Liam McCool with 83 pts.

The final mixed event of the season was played on Wednesday last with the combination were possible of one gent, one lady member and one novice member, there was a great turnout of 18 teams. The winners were Ethna Wiley, Bernie O’Kane and Paul Bogle with 18.1 pts, the runners up were Dawn Gallagher, Maeve Crowe and Francie Devine with 17.8 pts, third place went to Maria Quigley, Patricia Kelly and Kevin Neeson with 16.6 pts the gross was won by Catherine Neeson, Joan Christy and Declan Doherty with 12 pts.

Club Matchplay Tournaments
Most of the club matchplay events have caught up to date and most are at the final stages. In the Jones cup 0-9 handicaps Paddy O’Kane awaits the winner of Ryan McGowan and either Peter Doherty or Conor McCool, the Gallagher cup will see Kevin Neeson take on Pete Donaghey in the final. The Lawson cup will be decided between George McCay and Luke Milligan.

The Worcester cup shoot-out will be between Mary Duffy and Francie Devine who will play club Captain Frankie Houston and Imelda Doherty in the decider. The Captain’s outing is almost filled to capacity with 168 names currently down to travel to Greencastle on Saturday 6th October, the entry fee for the day is £40 and should be paid to the gents box as soon as possible, no monies will be collected on the day! The entry sheet for the winter cup will be posted this week,it will begin on Sunday 13th October.

A further 24 players exited “Last man Standing” at the weekend with again Everton doing most of the damage eliminating 16 players! 297 still remain and go through to week three and are in contention for the £1000 prize.

This week’s £50 bar credit draw winner was Colin McCafferty. Tickets remain on sale for the Bay-city Rollerworld & Smokie night on Saturday 29th September at a very reasonable £12.50 each, this was a fantastic night 2 years ago when the bands last played at the club and more of the same is Guaranteed!.

OLIVER AT THE DOUBLE
Oliver Creswell (13) added his second big Saturday win in recent weeks when he topped the leader-board in Saturday’s Open event kindly sponsored by Michael Kennedy-Independent financial advice. The morning players in a field of 214 golfers had a significant advantage in excellent weather conditions which unfortunately changed drastically with incessant rain that prevailed late in to the evening, as a result almost all of the prize -winning returns were made early on. The winner got to the turn with 20pts on his card and consolidated his round with a further 21 pts on the back nine to set the winning total of 41pts which in the worsening conditions was unlikely ever to be bettered, the runner up was early morning starter veteran Jim Malcolm (19) just a point behind with 39 pts, third went to Tommy Sharkey (24) who did manage an excellent total in the wet conditions he also had 39pts, fourth spot went to Peter Etherson (19) with 38pts with Danny Duffy (14) another veteran taking fifth place with 38pts, the gross went to Patrick Kennedy(3) another afternoon starter with an excellent three over par 33pts,the nines were claimed by Declan McDonnell (11) with 22 pts for the first nine and Paddy O’Kane who posted 21 pts for his back nine.

Thursday Club week 1
The popular Thursday club autumn series phase one, got underway on Thursday last with a very good entry, the week one winner was new member Eddie O’Kane (25) with 40pts, closely followed by Neil Conroy (9) with 39 pts, third went to Kevin Heffernan (17) with 38 pts, the gross went to Paul McGill (6) with 30 gross pts. Please note that the Thursday Club entry fee of £4 inclusive of two’s does not come off your swipe card and should be paid to the gent’s box or to the committee ,week two will again be over 18 holes and will be qualifying, any two’s recorded at the second hole this week will count in “King of the two’s” but will not count for 2’s payment, this will change weekly with the hole with the most two’s omitted the following week!

Please note that the Monday Club Teams will get underway this coming week Monday 17th September over 18 holes, the format will be posted weekly, all members are very welcome to participate.

Past Captain’s and Presidents Day.
Past Captains and Presidents day was played on Friday 31st August and was the first year it was combined with Ladies & gents this proved to be a very successful day. The winners in the Ladies section were 1st Anne Sharkey 38pts ,2nd Philomena Cooke 36 pts and 3rd Lady President Maeve Crowe 35 pts. In the gents section the winner was Terry Doherty with 39 pts the runner up was Oliver McNally with 36 pts and third Eamon McCay with 35 pts.

Team News
Congratulations to Tommy Forbes and his O’Hare cup team who captured that trophy last Tuesday at Castlehume G.C, leading 12-4 from the home leg Strabane secured the win with a great first nine showing and then closed out the back 2 matches to take the Tyrone & Fermanagh silverware, well done to the entire squad who all played their part throughout the Summer months.

Declan Devine’s North-West league team have made it to their final on Sunday 7th October after a win over Foyle Golf club by five matches to two, they will now meet City of Derry in the decider.

Congratulations to young Alan McGinley who recently recorded a hole in one at the 16th hole in the McGettigan Applegreen competition. The winner of the £50 bar credit draw this week was Anne Sharkey.

Last man Standing moves to week two this week, please get the selections in before 6pm Friday 14th September.

Ladies news
Lady President Maeve Crowe held her Lady Presidents day last Friday at the club and thankfully the weather was kind to an excellent entry. The popular winner was Geraldine McCrory (33) with a brilliant 42 pts, the runner up was Lisa Patton (12) with 36 pts, third went to Imelda Doherty (31) also with 36pts, the gross winner was Jennifer Rouse (8) the category winners were Shauna Stewart, Monica McGettigan and Olive Reid, the nines went to Norma Brogan and to Mary Casey. The Lady Presidents charity competition was played last Tuesday and was won by Lisa Patton (12) with 38 pts, Shauna Stewart (14) took category one with 36 pts with Geraldine McCrory (33) winning category two with 34 pts Carole McFeeters(37) won category three with 27 pts.

Tickets are selling well for the Bay City rollers and “Smokie” tribute show on Saturday 29th September, tickets are available to purchase at the bar, the office or from Tommy Forbes.

SHANE WINS Mc GETTIGAN’S APPLEGREEN
Shane McLaughlin had his best round of the golfing season to take the McGettigan’s sponsored Apple-green stableford with an excellent 42 pts, a super second nine where he registered 22pts being only one over par set up an excellent total on the day to finish one point ahead of Mark Gillespie (13) and Declan Devine (10) who finished in second and third places, Michael McGarrigle (12) again featured to take fourth place with 40pts,the final nett prize going to David Mullen(11) another player who has had a great season back at golf. First gross went to Nicky Patton (6) playing in the winners four-ball he carded a best of the day 33 gross pts, the nines prizes went to Gerard McCrory who had 21 pts on his front nine and to Ryan McGowan (6) who was one under gross on his back nine to compile 22 pts.

THURSDAY OPEN
The final Thursday open event of the season was played on Thursday last and was won by Martin Finlay (18) with 41pts on break of tie from the ever improving Darius Bogle (16) with Dr Ciaran Kelly (12) in third with 40 pts, Keith Patterson (8) was the gross winner with 31 gross pts. Just a reminder that the Thursday club gets underway this Thursday 6th September, use the BRS to reserve your time slot, the first four weeks will be 18 holes qualifying weather permitting, weekly entry is £4 which includes two’s.

Monday Open
John McMenamin (14) was this week’s Monday open winner with 40pts just one in front of the runner–up Stephen Kennedy (10) with 39 pts.
There are a few outstanding ties in this year’s matchplay- Competitions, these must be arranged as soon as possible as no further extensions will be given. The Captain’s outing to Greencastle Golf Club on Sat 6th October will be live on the BRS to book from this weekend,the fee is £40 which includes Golf, meal and prizes.

Presidents Mixed
The club President Paul O’Hare hosted his Presidents mixed event last Wednesday with 24 pairs competing, the winners were Betty Kelly and Francie Devine with 22 pts,the runner s up were Carole mcFeeters and Vive-Captain Declan Doherty with 21 pts, third place went to Geraldine McCrory and Howard Crowe also with 21 pts with the gross prize going to Shauna Stewart & Denis Porter.

Bertie Colhoun Cup Ladies
The winner of last week’s Ladies competition the Bertie Colhoun cup was Donna Doherty (33) with 36 pts, the categories were claimed by Lisa Patton (12) with 34 pts, Imelda Doherty (31) with 34 pts and Carole McFeeters (37) with 33 pts.

Best wishes to Lady President Maeve Crowe and to all our ladies playing on Lady Presidents Day this coming Friday 7th September, “D Mc G” will be providing the music with his fantastic 2 hr show from 10.00pm on the night following the presentations

The winner of this week’s £50 bar draw was Garvin Godfrey.
There were many casualties in the first week of Last Man Standing with 225 players exiting the competition 322 players have advanced to round two, there is an international break this week so no selections are needed until the weekend of 15th-17th September

Tickets are moving well for our big Bay city rollers & Smokie experience night on Saturday 29th September, members are urged to purchase soon as not to be disappointed, tickets are only £12.50 each, we also have the “Logues” on Sat 20th October and Abba tribute band the “Bjorn Identity” back with us on 24th November!
