Raymond Reigns in the Rain

The Daley’s Service Station Open at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday last almost fell victim to heavy rains which caused many of the morning starters to hoist the white flag and head for the shelter of the clubhouse.  Not so Raymond McDermott, who played through the worst of the conditions to post an impressive winning points tally of 40.  Whilst the afternoon players enjoyed much better weather, none were able to match McDermott’s fine effort.  A few came very close, notably Terence McGranaghan and Ryan McGowan who each returned 39 point cards to finish second and third respectively. David Mullen’s 37 point total was best in Category One, while Brian Forester topped Category Two with 35 points.  William Potts claimed the Category Three award with 37 points, and Brian O’Neill and Keith Patterson returned the best nines.  Sean Forbes continued his recent run of good form to take the gross prize with a solid 74, while Portnoo’s Jim Harley was best visitor with 35 points.

Sunday’s Foyle Hospice Team Event, one of the biggest attractions of the season, produced one of the closest finishes in years.  Three teams tied for the top spot, and after a lengthy count-back, the result was declared as follows:

1. Oliver Cresswell, Seamus Foley, Francie Conwell, Liam McCool 103 pts

2. Chris McDermott, Liam Patton, Seamus Devenney, Hugh Casey             103 pts

3. James McAllister, Eddie McHugh, John McGaughan, Patsy O’Donnell   103 pts

4. Oliver Doherty, James Doherty, Robert Doherty, Raymond Gallagher     102 pts

Ladies: Lauren Patton, Laura McCay, Angela Houston, Lisa Patton                        98 pts

Thursday’s Club Shop Open was dominated by Damian Carey whose marvellous 43 points gave him a comfortable three points to spare over the field.  Martin Elliott compiled a steady 40 points to take second place with Damien McCrossan in third place with a similar score. Ballybofey’s Bryan Reilly dropped only three shots to par in taking the gross prize with an excellent 72, while Newtownstewart’s John Bimson won the visitors’ prize with 36 points.

Keith Patterson has been a model of consistency through the summer season and his excellence was again rewarded in last Monday’s Open as he produced yet another level par 69 (40 points) to take the top award.  Runner-up was Paul O’Reilly, also with 40 points, with Joe Elliott a point adrift in third place.  The gross award went to Stephen McCay with a round of 74, while Matthew McGowan, playing out of Ballybofey, topped the visitors’ category with 32 points.

Lady President Olive Turner was in outstanding form in last Tuesday’s Foyle Hospice Charity, her winning score of 42 points seeing her home, though with little to spare.  Alison Curry was best in the 0-24 category with 39 points, while the category 25-36 victor, Mary McCrory, pushed the winner all the way coming up short by a single point as she returned 41 points.

The popular Wednesday mixed event, which has proved to be so successful throughout the season, entered its final month of competition last week with victory going to Nigel Houston, Lisa Patton, Neil McGlinchey and Angela Houston with 40 points.  Three points back in second place were Frankie and Caroline Connolly, Rory Doherty and Lauren Patton.

Congratulation to Tommy Forbes and his Lawson Cup Squad on their hard-fought victory over Dungannon in the final of the competition.  After a tremendous away performance which saw them trailing by a single point, it would have been easy to assume that the trophy was in the bag.  However, as to be expected, Dungannon came to the Ballycolman venue with a very different mind-set.  Far from rolling over, the visitors put up a magnificent struggle and almost pulled off a memorable win.  However, the Strabane team showed admirable composure to ride out the Dungannon storm and edge home to a deserved victory.

Finally, the Competition Committee ask that all matchplay semi-finalists ensure that their ties are played on or before September 17 so that the “Finals Day” can proceed as scheduled.

Double Header at the Weekend

The “Felix’s Bar Medal” played on Saturday at Strabane Golf Club was the first leg of a double header over the weekend.  Despite the frequent downpours which persisted throughout the day scoring was of the usual high quality.  Portsalon’s Paul McGettigan seemed to revel in the conditions, evidenced by his excellent winning score of 63 nett which gave him a comfortable margin over the field.  Club President Ben Corry maintained his recent good form in dropping only a couple of shots to par in taking second place with a fine nett 66.  Aidan Boyle’s game appears also to be in good shape as he claimed third place with a 67 nett. The gross prize went to consistent Keith Patterson with a two over par 71.  Paul McGill topped Category One with a steady 69 nett, while Dermot Cairns and Mervyn Moore were best in Categories Two and Three respectively, each with good scores of 67 nett.  The nines went to Sean McCrossan and Jude O’Neill, with Mark McCullagh taking the visitors’ prize.

Sunday’s “Brian Patton Golf Day” attracted an excellent entry of 180.  In conditions which were far from easy, as a stiff breeze swept across the course throughout the day, it was last Monday’s hero, Paul McGarrigle, who again emerged victorious.  Whilst most were predicting a winning score in the high thirties, McGarrigle produced a stunning 42 points take the top prize.  Olive Reid showed tremendous grit in battling through the winds to post 40 points and claim the runner’s-up spot. Third place went to Ben Corry with 37 points with Chris McDermott on a similar mark in fourth. Enda Kennedy took the gross award with 31 points.

Other prizes went to:

First nine         Jim Potts                     22 points

Second nine    Seamus Foley              21 points

Visitor             Bobby O’Shea                        33 points

Ladies                         Mandy Coyne             34 points

Nearest pin      Kieran Doherty           21 inches

Longest Drive (Men)              Damian McGranaghan

Longest Drive (Ladies)           Geraldine Crossan

Lorna Duffy had a hole-in-one at the difficult par three eighth during Sunday’s play.

After a protracted absence from the game, Adrian McGonagle played some of his best golf since his return to post a winning score of 42 points in last Thursday’s TBF McElholm Open.  Young Kevin Gallagher showed much promise in taking second place with 39 points, a score replicated by third placed Joe Elliott.  Enda Kennedy conceded only one shot to par in taking the gross award with a round of 70, while Newtownstewart’s Sean Glackin took the visitors’ prize with 35 points.

Paul McGarrigle claimed his second Monday Open crown of the month by carding 38 points in last week’s event, enough to see him home by two points from runner-up Garrick Wood.  Also on 36 points was third-placed Keith Patterson, while Enda Kennedy amassed 35 points to top the gross category.

There was a close finish to last Wednesday’s mixed greensomes, with Pat McAneny and Theresa Casey just getting up ahead of Ryan McGowan and Teresa Logue.  Both pairings posted rounds of 33 points, one better than the third-placed duo of Freddie Patterson and Caroline Connolly.

The last of the season’s Ladies’ Opens was the prestigious Donna’s Flowerbox competition.  Best performer on the day was Catherine Neeson whose superb 40 point return gave her a two point winning cushion over runner-up, Lady Captain Dympna Doherty.  Third place went to Olive Reid with 37 points, with Lorna Armstrong taking the gross award with 24 points.  Roe Park’s M. O’Kane had the best Category 0-18 score of 35 points, with Mary McCrory heading the 19-28 Category on 36 points.  The 29-36 Category award went to Geraldine McCrory with 35 points.

Other winners were:

First Nine        Annette Patton            20 points

Second Nine   Angela Houston          19 points

Visitor             Rosie Agnew (Redcastle).

Congratulations to Freddie Patterson and his Roberts Cup team on their convincing victory in the final of the competition.  The hard work really was done in the away leg at Killymoon, with the Strabane men only dropping a couple of points.  With that impressive foundation laid, it was no surprise that they quickly racked up the necessary points at home to secure a well-merited success.

Tommy Forbes’ Lawson Cup team would seem to be well on their way to mirroring that success as they produced a battling performance in Dungannon to trail by only a point with the home leg still to come.  No doubt the team captain, though, will be preaching the dangers of complacency before this week’s crucial return leg.

Runaway Winner in Pat Kirk Open

The Pat Kirk Open was the main attraction at Strabane Golf Club last week and produced a runaway victory for young Michael Etherson.  Playing off a handicap of 14, Michael compiled a magnificent 44 points to leave almost 200 players trailing in his wake.  In second place, though some distance back, was Jim Malcolm who just got up on the break of a tie from third placed Frankie Houston, with both players posting 40 points apiece. Also on 40 points and claiming the gross award was Declan O’Hare, his round of 74 representing good golf in conditions which were far from easy. Chris McDermott was best in Category One with 38 points, while Ryan Kelly and Eric Reid topped Categories Two and Three respectively, each with impressive scores of 39 points.  Brian Millar holed his tee shot at the par three second on his way to carding the best score on the first nine, with Kieran O’Neill taking the second nine prize.

James Callan was in fine form in last Thursday’s Northern Confectionery Open, his excellent 43 points giving him a two-point winning margin over runner-up Cathal McLaughlin. Club President Ben Corry dropped only one shot to par in taking third place with 40 points. Keith Patterson had the best gross return of 71, while Sean Faulkner, Donegal GC, won the visitors’ section with 37 points.

In ladies’ golf, Shauna Patton and Jennifer Rouse combined to return a winning card of 40 points in the Daily Mail Fourball Betterball.  In second place, a couple of points adrift of the winners, were Anne Sharkey and Bernie O’Kane.

Wednesday’s Mixed Greensomes went to the mother and son combination of Rory and Donna Doherty.  Their 34 point tally left them two points ahead of runners-up Stephen McCay and Caroline Connolly.  Also on 32 points, and in third place, were Conor Sharkey and Bernie O’Kane.

Strabane’s hopes of landing this year’s prestigious Senior Cup were dashed on Sunday last as they went down at the semi-final stage to Lurgan GC. Despite taking the first two matches, the local side could not land the elusive third which would have seen them through.  But they came so close, with Sean Forbes taking his match to the nineteenth before finally succumbing.  Nonetheless, Strabane can take much satisfaction from this campaign and, with a relatively young side, they will undoubtedly be again in the thick of things in the future.

Fir Trees Open for Fantastic Forbes

Sean Forbes produced one of the best rounds of the year at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday last to claim victory the Fir Trees Open.  Playing off a handicap of four, Forbes shot at brilliant five under par 64 to post a magnificent stableford score of 45 points, enough to give him a comfortable two point winning advantage.  Eight-handicapper James Harron was also in tremendous form as he carded a one over par score of 43 points to take second place, one point better than third-placed Conor Sharkey.  Heading Category One, with 40 points, was Michael Kelly, while the best return in Category Two was Mark McDermott’s 42 points.  Brian O’Kane compiled a steady 41 points to take the Category Three award, with the gross prize going to Conal Cooke who shot a two-under par 67.

Low handicappers were also very much to the fore in last Thursday’s Nugent’s Open.  Leading the way, with a superb level par 69 (43 points), was Freddie Patterson, while runner-up Stephen McCay likewise carded a level par round to finish just one point adrift of the winner.  Third place went to in-form Shane McLaughlin who returned 39 points.  Darren Crawford dropped just one shot to par in topping the gross category, while Letterkenny’s Robert Bell took his second visitor’s prize in as many weeks, this time with a 39 point return.

Tommy Forbes has been threatening to return a winning score for some time now and it finally happened in last week’s Monday Open, his excellent 40 points giving him a winning margin of two points over runner-up Aidan Corry.  Shane McLaughlin again figured at the head of the leaderboard, his 38 points again giving him a third place finish. Keith Patterson continued his recent successful run in the gross category as he posted a three-over par 72 to top that section.  The visitors’ prize went to City of Derry’s Robert McKimm.

Sunday’s Mr and Mrs Mixed Foursomes event went to the Limerick twosome of Pat and Mary Byrne.  Playing for the first time over the Ballycolman course, they combined to produce a winning 43 points, a point better than second placed Cahir and Rosaleen Doherty.  Eamon and Laura McCay were also on 42 points in third place while the winners of the “Tarzan and Jane” section were Liam Curry and Ann Duffy who amassed an impressive best-of-the-day 45 points.

Wednesday’ regular mixed competition was a team format with the top two quartets returning 43 points.  On count-back the winners were Frankie Connolly, Rachel Devenney, William Potts and Olive Reid.  Just edged out into second place were Nigel and Angela Houston, Rory Doherty and Laura McCay.

The Lady Herdman Cup was the feature event in ladies’ golf last week and was won by Betty Kelly with a solid 72 nett.  Anne Sharkey was best in Category 0-24 with a nett 75, while top performer in the 25-36 Category was Margaret Bonner who matched the winner’s score of 72 nett.

“Snowball” Snatches STS

There was an excellent entry for the STS Open at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday last.  In conditions which were far from easy, a course softened by the rains of the previous days aligned to a stiff north-westerly breeze, Anthony “Snowball” Callaghan emerged as the winner with an excellent 18-hole tally of 40 points.  That gave him a one-point winning margin over runner-up John Etherson, who just held off third-placed Paddy Doyle on the break of a tie.  Cathal Patton played very well on the day to only concede two shots to par as he claimed the gross award with a fine round of 71.  Consistent Adrian McLaughlin posted 38 points to top Category One, while Aidan Coyle matched that score to emerge as Category Two winner.  Dermot Corry’s 37 points was the best return in Category Three, with George McCay and Rory Doherty having the best nines.

Players found good scores in Thursday’s Doherty’s Fuels Open almost as difficult to come by.  George Turner was a notable exception, his superb 42 point return ensuring that he picked up the top award.  Martin Foley was a point back in second place, with Ronan Foley a further point adrift in third position. Keith Patterson shot an impressive level par 69 to return the best gross score of the day, while Letterkenny’s Robert Bell carded 37 points to claim the visitors’ prize.

The Monday Open fell to a brilliant score of 44 points, carded by big-hitting Paul McGarrigle.  In second place and claiming all the plaudits for posting the round-of-the-week was Conal Cooke whose 43 point return reflected superb a four under par round of 65. Pearse McLaughlin was third with a fine 42 points, while Keith Patterson again took the gross honours with a one over par 70.  The visitors’ prize went to Delwyn Montgomery with a solid 38 points.

Bernie O’Kane was in sensational form in Tuesday’s Bank of Ireland Trophy.  She amassed a magnificent 42 points to put the rest of the field in the shade and, in the process, notched up valuable points in the race for the ‘Golfer of the Year’ accolade.  Rosemary Wilson had a 36 point return to top the 0-24 category, while Caroline Connolly carded the second-best score of the day, 38 points, to win the 25-36 category prize.

Wednesday’s Mixed Teams event produced the following result:

Medal for Martin

Saturday’s medal event at Strabane Golf Club, sponsored by Bureau Express, was won in tremendous style by 12-handicapper Martin Rouse.  In conditions which were far from easy, Rouse dropped only a handful of shots to par in posting a winning nett 62 and distanced himself by three clear shots from the field.  Paul Cooke and Barry Patterson each carded rounds of 65 nett to finish second and third respectively.  Patterson’s cause was helped in no small measure by his ace at the par three second.  Category One went to Garrick Wood with a 67 nett, a score matched by Category Two winner Joe Elliott.  George Hunter went one better, posting a nett 66 to finish top of Category Three.  Keith Patterson shot a 75 to take the gross prize, with Maurice Doherty and Senan Roarty claiming the nines.

Foyle Golf Club’s Ryan Kerr amassed an impressive 44 points to claim the spoils in last Monday’s Open.  A couple of points in arrears was the rapidly improving David Mullen, his 42 points just ousting the similar return of Jason Gourley on count-back.  Conal Cooke took the gross award with a two over par 71, while Letterkenny’s Roy McCrory won the visitors’ prize with 29 points.

Wednesday’s mixed scramble produced the following result:

1. Gerard Stewart, Shauna Patton, Conal Cooke, Annette Patton                 42.3 nett

2. Darren Crawford, Bernie O’Kane, Rory Doherty, Anne Sharkey             43.5 nett

Top performer in Thursday’s Quinn’s Spirits Open was Aidan Corry whose superb 45 point return gave him a couple of points to spare over runner-up Paul O’Hare.  Kieran Doherty’s level par round of 69 converted to 42 points and gained him the third spot.  Also on level par was gross winner Darren Crawford.

Lady Captain, Dympna Doherty, was in excellent form in Sunday’s Ladies/Gents stableford event.  Her winning 39 point return was two points better than second-placed Bernie O’Kane, who just edged out Lorna Armstrong on the break of a tie.

Results of Sunday’s St. Patrick’s GAA Open Teams:

1. Kevin McGinley, Shane McLaughlin, Pearse McLaughlin, Daniel Toland    98pts

2. Martin Patton, Paul McConway, Adrian Baldrick, Brian Cairns                     97pts

3. Garrick Woods, Sean McCrossan, Paul McGarrigle, John Tinney                    96pts

Garvan Godfrey’s O’Haire Cup team travelled to Omagh and racked up the points necessary to confirm their place in this year’s final.  Tommy Forbes’ Lawson Cup team have also made it through to their final. No such good news from the Conway Cup camp as they lost out in their semi-final encounter with Blacklion.

To assist in the preparations for the club’s tilt at the Senior Cup, a raffle with a difference has been organised by Entertainments convenor, Tommy Forbes.  Members and visitors with a couple of pounds to spare could walk away with a flat screen television.  Details are available in the clubhouse.

Anne Sharkey Wins President’s Prize

Mrs Olive Turner’s Lady President’s Day was the highlight of the ladies’ programme at Strabane Golf Club last week.  As anticipated, there was a large entry as the ladies turned out in force to pay tribute to a popular Lady President who has been a dedicated and enthusiastic supporter of ladies’ golf at the club over many years.

Anne Sharkey, playing off a handicap of 19, posted the winning score in last Tuesday’s event, her excellent 66 nett giving her a two stroke advantage over runner-up Adeline Shiels. Third place, with a nett score of 69, went to Caroline Connolly, with Lorna Duffy a further shot adrift in fourth place.  Monica McGettigan finished in fifth place with a nett 72, while the best gross return of the day was Lorna Armstrong’s steady 87.

Shauna Patton took the 0-20 category award with a nett 75; the 21-28 category went to Mary McCrory with a nett 72; Mary McGuigan carded a nett 76 to top the 29-36 category. The nines went to Donna Doherty (32.5) and Maura McBeth (35).

Other winners were:

Committee Prize         Geraldine McCrory     75 nett

Seniors                            Mary Duffy                 81 nett

Granny                            Betty Kelly                 74 nett

Guests                              Elizabeth Wilson         22 points

Non-qualifiers             Catherine O’Reilly      14 points

The feature event in men’s golf this week was Saturday’s Ulster Bank Open.  The top performer on the day was Pat McDaid who posted an impressive winning score of 42 points, a tally equalled by runner-up Cyril Downey.  Ronnie Wiley was just a point back in third place, with Enda Kennedy shooting a level par 69 to claim yet another gross prize. The categories went to Liam Curry (Category One: 40 points), Jim Callaghan (Category Two: 39 points) and John Tinney (Category Three: 38 points).  David Mullen and Eugene Patton had the best first and second nines respectively.

The Monday Open this week was won in emphatic fashion by Brian Devlin.  The talented seven-handicapper returned a one under par 44 points (gross 68) to storm home by a point from gallant runner-up John Brolly whose 43 points would probably have won most other weeks. Kevin McGinley returned 42 points to take third place, with the gross prize going to Keith Patterson for his level par 69 (41 points).

The incessant rain which caused the cancellation of Wednesday’s mixed competition did not prevent Thursday’s Men’s Open from proceeding as scheduled.  Indeed, considering the torrential downpours, the course was in exceptional condition, borne out by the excellent scores returned on the day.  Marc Brolly, playing off 11, posted a winning 42 points, one point better than runner-up Martin McDermott.  Aaron McGinn carded 40 points to finish third, while Paddy Kennedy’s 39 point return constituted the best gross score.  Ballybofey’s Shane Bonner claimed the visitors’ prize, also with 39 points.

Sunday’s Open Singles threw up an amazing performance by young Andy Connolly.  Playing off a handicap of 18, Andy amassed an incredible 48 points to win the event by the proverbial country mile.  He had seven shots to spare over Noel McConnell and Frankie Houston who finished second and third, each with 41 points.  The gross category was won by Damian McGranaghan with a three over par 72.

In inter-club competition, Garvan Godfrey’s O’Haire Cup team progressed after picking up the requisite five points at Omagh.  The Lawson Cup outfit, led by Tommy Forbes, had an excellent 13-3 first leg home victory over Omagh and must fancy their chances of making it through to the latter stages.  On the other hand, the Conway Cup squad just about scraped a home leg win over Blacklion (8½ – 7½) and team captain, Frankie Connolly, has his work cut out to conjure up an overall victory after that less than inspiring performance.

Finally, the club’s Monthly Draw will take place this Saturday.  Fully paid-up members can avail of an additional draw.

Superb Score Takes President’s Prize

Saturday’s feature event at Strabane Golf Club was Mr Ben Corry’s President’s Prize.  As was to be expected, there was a huge entry for the competition, a reflection of the esteem in which Ben is held by all at the club.  Not only has he worked tirelessly behind the scenes in various roles over the years, but as a talented golfer he has been one of the mainstays of inter-club competition, and invariably vies for the gross prize in club events week in-week out.  It was somehow appropriate, then, that the winner of the President’s Prize registered not only the best nett score, but shot the best gross score on the day also, a fact which undoubtedly gave Ben great satisfaction.  Fred McGavigan, playing off a handicap of 5, shot a superb level par 69 (64 nett) to top the leaderboard, one shot better than second-placed Chris McDermott.  Also on 65 nett, and in third place, was Michael Baldrick, while Paddy Kennedy dropped only one shot to par in taking the gross award with a solid 70.  Paddy O’Kane posted a nett 65 to take category one, while categories two and three went to Cathal McLaughlin and Chris Timoney, each with a nett 67.  Liam McCool and Mark Neely claimed the nines.  Bob McCurry notched the latest hole-in-one during Saturday’s play, acing the par three twelfth.

While most of the focus was on the President this week, it was the Junior Captain who caught the eye on Thursday last.  Young Ryan McGowan returned a brilliant 44 points to win the Mitchell Meats Stableford, taking the top prize with a couple of points to spare over runner-up Michael Neeson.  David Mullen carded 41 points to take third place, with Keith Patterson topping the gross category with a four over par 73.  Newtownstewart’s Mark Corry was best visitor with a return of 36 points.

The low round of the week was recorded by Letterkenny’s David McCormack.  Playing in last Monday’s Open, four-handicapper McCormack shot a marvellous 66 (43 stableford points) to win by two points from runner-up Pat McDaid.  Martin McDermott posted a level par 69 (41 points) to finish third.  Enda Kennedy matched that round of 69 to take the gross category, with Pauric Dunleavy from Letterkenny winning the visitors’ prize with a fine round of 40 points.

Tuesday’s ladies’ event was the Eileen Logue Memorial Trophy.  On a day of low scoring, Lorna Duffy emerged victorious, winning with an excellent score of 66 nett.  Rosemary Wilson was best in the 0-24 category with a nett 69, while Donna Doherty’s 67 nett assured her of the 25-36 category award.

Wednesday’s Mixed event turned out to be something of a family affair, with all three prizes going to husband and wife combinations.  Leading the way with a massive winning score of 41 points were Frankie and Caroline Connolly.  A measure of their domination can be gauged from the fact that runners-up Eric and Olive Reid were a full six points back on 35 points.  They in turn had a point to spare over third-placed Eamon and Laura McCay.

Sunday’s Club Teams event produced the following result:

1. Neil Alcock, Paul McLaughlin, Michael O’Neill, Chris Timoney                101pts

2. Freddie Patterson, Conor Sharkey, Martin McDermott, Lisa Patton         100pts

3. Denis Porter, Kevin Keegan, Joe Doherty, George Turner                        99pts

There were mixed fortunes for Strabane representative teams this week.  Having lost heavily in the away leg, the Phair Cup team bowed out at home to Castlehume.  The JB Carr side, despite having the advantage of a home draw, struggled to a half-match against Rossmore only to be eliminated on extra holes.

There was better news for the O’Haire Cup and Donegal Seniors teams after their home legs, though neither will be taking anything for granted going into the away ties.  The O’Haire Cup team lead Omagh 12-4, while the Donegal Senior squad go into their second leg against Ballybofey with a 5-2 advantage.

In the ongoing “Team Challenge”, Dixies defeated “Toots” in what proved to be a nail-biting affair.  After regular play the teams were tied and the winners were only decided on the 20th hole. “Dixies” will meet “Tommy Forbes Catering” at the semi-final stage of the tournament.

Successful Open Week Concludes

Strabane Golf Club’s Open Week ended on Saturday with the Pat O’Neill Singles, played in conditions which rapidly deteriorated as the evening set in.  Indeed, had the incessant rain arrived any earlier, it is extremely doubtful if the event could have been completed due to waterlogged greens.  Luckily, the rains held off long enough and it was Keith Patterson who took full advantage as he posted a superb sub par 42 points, off a handicap of 5, to take the top award.  He was followed closely by Albert McNally and Nicky Patton who carded 41 points and 40 points to finish second and third respectively. Enda Kennedy dropped only one shot to par on his way to the gross prize.  Category One went to Kevin Keegan with 40 points; Category Two was won by Jim Malcolm with 38 points, while Jim Arbuckle headed Category Three with a similar return. The nines went to Brian Kelly and John Langan.

Monday’s Open event was the GMG Betterball.  In-form Kevin Keegan joined forces with Maurice Harkin to post a winning 45 points, one better than Paul McGill and Adrian McDermott.  The big-hitting duo of Freddie Patterson and Martin McDermott returned 43 points to take third place, with Foncie McNally and Seamus McPhilemy in fourth place, also with 43 points.  The gross prize went to Enda Kennedy and Kieran O’Neill with a solid 66.

The Ladies’ Open on Tuesday was jointly sponsored by Shades Boutique and Orlaigh’s Hair Salon.  Rosaleen Doherty returned to her very best form as she amassed an excellent winning score of 42 points.  That gave her two to spare over runner-up, Newtownstewart’s Margaret Miller.  Jennifer Rouse maintained her good recent performances by taking third place with 37 points.  The gross award was claimed by Philomena Cooke.  Therese Mullan (Newtownstewart) topped the 0-18 category with 32 points, while Rosemary Wilson was best in the 19-28 category with 37 points.  Angela Houston’s 34 points assured her of the 29-36 category.  Jean Forbes (Castlerock) and Alison Curry took the nines, with the Visitors’ Prize going to Ballybofey’s Christine Lynch.

Wednesday’s Medicare Mixed Foursomes went to Mary and Noel McCrory, their nett 64 return seeing them home from Denis Porter and Annette Patton who carded 65.5 nett. That score was matched by third-placed Ryan McGowan and Lauren Patton, with the gross prize being claimed by Damian McGranaghan and Shauna Patton with a combined total of 80.

James Harron, playing off a handicap of 9, had the best of a trio of scores of 42 points in Thursday’s Munchies Singles. After a count-back, he just got home ahead of Kevin Keegan, while Enda Kennedy finished third to pick up one of the few nett awards he receives in the course of a season.  A prolific gross winner, Enda fired a magnificent six under par 63 off a scratch handicap, a score which converted to the third of the 42 point cards.  Martin McDermott won the gross award with a one-over 70, while Letterkenny’s Kevin McHugh returned 41 points to take the visitors’ prize.

There was good quality scoring in Friday’s Greensomes.  The winners were:

1. E. McHugh and P. O’Donnell                       47 points

2. Denis Porter and Hugh Casey                    46 points

3. Oliver McNally and Jim Arbuckle           45 points

The gross went to Kevin McGinley and Shane McLaughlin with a return of 74.

Mr Ben Corry’s President’s Mixed Foursomes on Sunday was the curtain-raiser for the President’s Week which will culminate on Saturday with the President’s Prize.  Liam McDevitt and Teresa Logue took the honours, posting the best score on the day of 41 points, enough to give them a slender one point victory over second-placed Denis Porter and Imelda Doherty. Barry Reid and Jennifer Rouse were a further point back in third place, while the gross category was won by Roy Patterson and Lorna Armstrong with a score of 83.  Garvan Godfrey stole the show, though, by holing his tee shot at the par three seventh, the first time the newly constructed hole has been aced since it opened earlier this year.

Finally, congratulations also to Enda McDonnell on registering a hole-in-one at the tricky 12th, his five iron into a stiff breeze rattling the flag on its way to the bottom of the cup.

Kevin Claims “Costcutters”

Strabane Golf Club’s Open Week got underway on Saturday last, the Haughey’s Costcutters Stroke attracting a huge entry of well in excess of 200 players.  With the course in its usual immaculate condition, competition was fierce for the excellent prizes on offer.  Indeed, almost thirty players equalled or bettered the par of 69.  Kevin Neeson produced the round of the day, holding his nerve on the final green to hole a winning 20 footer.  His return of 64 nett gave him a one shot advantage over John Etherson who had the best of a number of scores of 65 nett. John J. Duffy was on the same mark to claim third place, while Paddy Kennedy posted a tremendous one under 68 to top the gross category.  Category One went to Kieran O’Neill with a nett 67, Shaun McGonagle was best in Category Two with a 65 nett, with Francie Conwell’s nett 66 gaining him the Category Three prize.  The nines went to Enda McDonnell and Martin McDermott, with Letterkenny’s Kevin McHugh taking the visitors’ prize with a fine 68 nett.

The Frylite Open Teams competition on Sunday produced the following result:

1. Nigel Houston, Gerry Casey, Brian O’Kane, Bernie O’Kane                                92pts

2. Martin Corry, Kevin Connolly, Danny Glackin, F. McGranaghan                   92pts

3. Stephen McCay, Freddie Patterson, Frankie Houston, Neil McGlinchey    90pts

4. Martin Patton, Adrian Baldrick, Brian Cairns, Paul McConway                       88pts

Newcomer Dermot Cairns claimed his first title on Monday, his excellent 40 points getting him home in the weekly open event ahead of James Callan and Gerard Bradley who finished second and third respectively.  Like the winner, they too posted scores of 40 points. John Wolfe of Bundoran GC topped the visitors’ section with 33 points.

On Tuesday, the ladies’ Member’s Cup went to Mary Duffy with a fine round of 71 nett.  Alison Curry carded a 74 nett to lead the way in the 0-24 category, with Donna Doherty first home in category 25-36 with a nett 72.

Mary Duffy carried that good form into Wednesday’s mixed event when, in partnership with Cathal McLaughlin, she again dominated.  Their tally of 37 points saw them comfortably home ahead of Patsy and Rosemary Wilson who returned a 33 point total.  Pat and Maeve Corry were another point back in third place.

Thursday Open was sponsored by “Blades Barber’s”.  Garvan Godfrey handled the difficult conditions best though it was a close-run thing for the top award. The first three home all posted 39 points, with Godfrey getting up ahead of Conal Cooke and John Tinney.  Cooke deserves special mention, his level par round representing golf of the highest level.  Enda Kennedy’s one over par 70 assured him of the gross prize.

The ever-growing and highly talented Junior Section had their Junior Captain’s Day on Friday last.  Much credit for the flourishing junior contingent must go to Kevin and Catherine Neeson who give a lot of their time to looking after the development of the youngsters.  They are ably assisted this year by Junior Captains Ryan McGowan and Lisa Patton. In the boy’s section of last Friday’s competition, it was Caolan Crawford who emerged victorious with a winning score of 41 points.  Taking the honours in the girl’s section was Abbey Maxwell with a round of 32 points.

Other winners were:

Boys’ Section:

Category A     1. Kevin Gallagher                  40 points

                            2. Ronan Haughey                  39 points

Category B      1. Ciaran Neeson                     32 points

                             2. Kieran Walsh                      31 points

                                2. Maeve Bradley

                                3. Emer Houston

                                4. Rachel Ellis

In representative golf, Tommy Forbes’ Lawson Cup team progressed to the next round as they notched up a fairly comfortable victory over Killymoon.  The performance of the week, however, came from the Donegal Senior Championship side who overcame a 5-2 deficit to make it through against North-West GC.  Trailing by that considerable margin after the away leg, there were many who doubted if Strabane could recover.  But, in a nerve-jangling finale, they just about got over the line.  Paddy Kennedy had a putt on the last green to seal victory, but through some inexplicable aberration he contrived to miss from a matter of inches.  That saw his match progress into extra holes and, while others might have wilted after that horror, Paddy stuck to his task and closed the match – and the tie – on the 21st hole.

Captain’s Charity raises £1350 for C-R-Y

This year the Captain’s choosen charity is Cardiac Risk in the Young (C-R-Y.)

Each week across Northern Ireland and the UK twelve people 35 and under years of age die from undiagnosed heart conditions. The figure represents a  50% increase on previous estimates. That is the stark message from Cardiac Risk in the Young.

The Captain, Seamus Friel,  said that he was delighted by the way way members of the club donated to this worthy cause, as well as money raised on Captain’s Day there was also a draw for a hamper which was kindly donated by Marks & Spencers, Omagh.  The winner of the hamper was Seamus McPhilemy.

Louise McShane, pictured below, said that she was delighted that the Captain choose
C-R-Y as his charity and was overwhelmed by the generosity of the members of Strabane Golf Club.

Masterful Masterson

On one of his visits to the Ballycolman course, new US Open champion, Graeme McDowell, once ranked Strabane among the very best inland courses in the north of Ireland. How much more would he be impressed now with the many improvements and upgrades that have changed the face of the course in the intervening years?  On Saturday last, the lady golfers who turned out in their dozens to honour a most popular and highly esteemed Lady Captain, found the course in absolutely pristine condition and all credit for that goes to Paul McFadden and his green-keeping staff for their dedication and commitment to excellence.

Lady Captain's winner Geraldine Masterson receiving her prize from Lady Captain, Dympna Doherty. Check out more photo in the Gallery.

In total, there was an entry of 63 for Mrs Dympna Doherty’s Lady Captain’s Prize, a fitting tribute to a lady who has worked tirelessly for the ladies’ section in a variety of roles over the years.  The winner, Geraldine Masterson, was in sensational form as she produced a stunning round of 61 nett to tower above everyone else in the field. A measure of her dominance can be gauged from the fact that she won by a colossal margin of nine shots.  Runner-up was Teresa Logue whose nett 70 score would have been very close to the winning round on any other day. Betty Kelly was just a shot further back in third place, Lorna Armstrong was fourth with a nett 72, while Shauna Patton was another shot adrift in fifth place. The gross award went to the in-form Mandy Coyne who posted a fine round of 82.

Jean McGinley was best in the 0-20 category with a nett 77; Rachel Devenney topped the 21-28 category with a nett 73, while leading the way in the 29-36 category with another nett 73 was Angela Houston. Winner of the first nine was Annette Patton, while Dympna Coyle picked up the award for the second nine.

Other winners were:

Madeline McColgan – nearest the pin at the 2nd hole

Lauren Patton – longest drive at the 18th hole

Collette Kelly – putting

Alice Houston – non-qualifiers

Mary McCrory – committee prize

Mary Casey – granny prize

Rota MacLochlainn – Senior

Rose McGuigan (Roe Park GC) – first visitor

Patricia McDaid (Portnoo GC) – second visitor

On Tuesday last, the regular weekly competition – on this occasion the “Eileen Keery Memorial Trophy” – was won by Mandy Coyne who is undoubtedly in her best ever form at the moment.  Her excellent winning score of 66 nett gave her three shots to spare over Lorna Duffy who guaranteed herself the 25-36 category prize.  Maeve Corry returned 71 nett to top the 0-24 category.

To complete a busy week for the ladies, they were again on the course on Wednesday for a mixed scramble which saw the top award going to Norma Brogan, Kathleen Hoynes, Rory Doherty and Joe Elliott.  Their tally of nett 44 gave them a fraction to spare over Lady Captain Dympna Doherty, Philomena Cooke, Denis Porter and Oliver McNally who finished less than a shot shy of the winners.

The men have had to take something of a back-seat this week, though on Monday last Seamus McPhilemy showed something akin to his form of old as he stormed to the victory podium in the Monday Open with a great 41 points.  Father and son, George and Stephen McCay, fought it out for second place with George striking a blow for the seniors as he eased into the runners-up spot with 41 points, one better than third-placed Stephen. Sean Forbes won the gross category with a solid 73, while Sean Callaghan (Portnoo GC) won the visitors’ prize with 38 points.

Thursday’s India House Open was won in outstanding fashion by 11-handicapper Mark McCrea who conceded only three shots to par on his way to a superb 44 points.  A couple of shots back in second place was Eddie McBrearty, with Killymoon’s Trevor Crooks in third place with 41 points.  Fred McGavigan compiled a typically flawless level par round of 69 to claim the gross prize.

In representative golf, Strabane’s Senior Cup squad, playing at home, had a tremendous couple of victories on Sunday last. Taking full advantage of local knowledge, Strabane saw off the challenge of a determined City of Derry outfit in the first of two morning matches, winning by three matches to two.  Portstewart, meanwhile, were recording a victory over Foyle GC to set up an afternoon shoot-out against the host club.  As it turned out, Strabane were far too strong and recorded a comfortable 4-1 victory to progress to the Ulster finals to be played a Belvoir Park in August.

Callan Claims Captain’s Prize

Despite the bright, dry conditions which prevailed on Saturday at Strabane Golf Club, a keen northerly breeze ensured that players were tested to the full as they set out for the season’s “holy grail” – Mr Seamus Friel’s Captain’s Prize.  A huge entry, in excess of 230 competitors, spoke volumes for the esteem in which the Captain is held by all at the club.  His boundless enthusiasm and commitment to all facets of club life are recognised and appreciated by the membership and, accordingly, they turned out in their droves to express their appreciation of his work on their behalf.

Don Callan, playing off a handicap of 23, produced a sensational back nine to post a superb winning score of 63 nett.  Thirteen over par at the turn, Don fired four pars in his next five holes to thrust himself into contention.  A steady finish, which included a crucial par four at the last, saw him seize an early advantage, one that he retained to close of play.

Terry Doherty, playing off 12, was only beginning his round as Callan finished, and he also found scores on the opening half more difficult to come by, somewhat surprising given that the breeze was much more prevalent in the back nine.  But, like the winner, he improved his score on the inward half, conceding only two shots to par as he too returned a marvellous 63 nett.  That par on the final hole that Callan conjured up became critical as, on count-back, it relegated Doherty to second place.

Third place went to Liam Curry who underlined his consistency as he shot nines of three over par apiece to take third place with an excellent nett 65, highlighted by a closing birdie as the gallery looked on.

A pair of nett 66’s, posted by Pat Cooke Jun. and Dermot Corry, gave them fourth and fifth places respectively.  Enda Kennedy, playing off a +1 handicap, was two under par at the half-way stage but bogeys at 11 and 18 meant he signed for a level par 69 to take the gross prize.  Aidan Boyle (67 nett), Oliver McNally (68 nett) and Pat McGuigan (67 nett) took the category awards, while Maurice Doherty and John Brolly had the best nines. Kevin Neeson topped the Guests Category with a nett 68, Patrick McCrossan had the longest drive, and Donal Cairns was nearest to the pin on the eighteenth.

On Tuesday last the “Captain’s Prize to Ladies” was won in tremendous style by Jennifer Rouse who spread-eagled the field to win by an astonishing eight shots. Her nett 62 put her out of sight as the rest of the field struggled in vain to break 70.  Runner-up was Lisa Patton on 70 nett, a score matched by Category 0-24 winner Heather Mitchell.  Annie O’Hagan took the 25-36 category with a nett 71.

To complete Mr Seamus Friel’s week, the Captain’s Betterball, played on Thursday produced the following result:

1. Dougie Patterson and George Hunter                        47 points

2. Jason Kelly and David Mullen                                      47 points

3. James Callan and Jimmy Coyle                                    46 points

Gross: Damian McGranaghan and Liam McDevitt     67

Last week’s Monday Open was won by Castlehume’s Garvin Greene.  Playing off a 10 handicap he conceded only four shots to par in compiling a highly impressive 42 points.  One point adrift was newcomer Ryan Patton, a player who will certainly figure in future events.  On 40 points, in third place, was Martin McDermott who dropped only one shot in an otherwise flawless performance. Kieran Doherty took the gross award, also with 40 points, while Bundoran’s John Wolfe topped the visitors’ category.

Wednesday’s Mixed competition finished thus:

1. Damian McGranaghan and Lisa Patton      46 nett

2. Patsy Wilson and Rachel Devenney           46 nett

3. Ciaran Kelly and Donna Doherty                 46 nett

The Sports Centre Junior Open was held on Sunday and show-cased some of the best young talent in the North-West. Kevin Gallagher was in sparkling form and emerged as the comfortable winner with a spectacular score of 47 points.  Runner-up was Lisa Patton who seems to improve with every round she plays.  On this occasion she amassed a brilliant 43 points, one better than Liam Callan who finished third to round off an auspicious weekend for the Callan family. Caolan Crawford took fourth place with a solid 40 points.  The gross award went to Shane Bonner from Foyle GC with a 29 point return.  The category prizes were claimed by Jordan Arthur (36 points), Ronan Haughey (39 points) and Pearse Toal (36 points).  Denim Rowan posted a fine 40 points to top the visitors’ category.  Other winners were Judith Corbett (best girl), Rachel McNally and Garbhan Roulston (beginners).

Congratulations to Mark Sharkey who found the NI Drapers Championship tailor-made to his talents.  After countless years of striving without success, Mark (of “Mark James Menswear”) finally made the breakthrough at Malone GC, emerging victorious after a highly-charged final few holes at the Belfast venue.

In representative golf, Strabane had a couple of good wins over Killymoon.  In the Conway Cup, they won 11.5 – 4.5 at home, while the O’Haire Cup team fared even better, winning by 10.5 – 5.5 away from home.

Scoring Spree Continues

The continuing dry spell and the excellent playing conditions at Strabane Golf Club have combined to produce an unprecedented scoring spree across all competitions.  To figure at the top end of any event at the moment requires a score well in excess of 40 points.  Such was the case in Saturday’s Modern Tyre Service stableford as Terence McGranaghan posted a superb 43 points to take the top prize, the second time in as many weeks that McGranaghan has carded a winning 40+ points.  Runner-up on Saturday was Philip Miller, with Terence McDermott finishing third, both players returning good scores of 41 points.  Patsy Rouse is on a tremendous run of form at the moment, topping Category One on this occasion with 38 points.  Eddie McBrearty and Brian Millar were best in Category Two and Three respectively, each with a score of 40 points. The nines went to Michael Etherson and Barry Reid, with Paddy Kennedy heading the gross category on three over par (72).

Patsy Rouse, playing some of the best golf of his life at present, dominated Thursday’s MD Oils event, his tremendous 43 point tally giving him a couple to spare over the field. Paul O’Neill was next best with 41 points while Fred McShane finished third with 40 points. Enda Kennedy produced his usual flawless performance to top the gross section with a two-under 67.  The visitors’ category was won by Castlehume’s David Robertson.

The Monday Open produced arguably the round of the week.  Paul O’Reilly, playing off a handicap of 6, fired a magnificent two-under par 67 (44 points) to take the top award.  Not far behind was Damian McGranaghan who, off a handicap of 5, shot 68 (42 points) to push the winner all the way.  In-form Garrick Wood was a further point adrift in third place, with Martin McDermott claiming the gross award with a round of 72.  Ballybofey and Stranorlar’s Sean Carlin compiled an impressive 41 points to win the visitors’ prize.

In ladies’ golf, Adeline Shiels won the Gallagher Cup and in the process racked up valuable points in the race for “Golfer of the Year”.  Adeline amassed a marvellous 40 point total to take the top prize but only on the break of a tie.  Young Lisa Patton, the rising star in the ladies’ section, matched the winner’s score but had to content herself with the Category 25-36 award.  Mandy Coyne posted 37 points to finish top of the 0-24 category.

The Wednesday Mixed Scramble went to the experienced quartet of Oliver McNally, Denis Porter, Maureen O’Donnell and Margaret Bonnar.  They combined to produce a winning score of 44.9, while Ryan McGowan, Tommy Sharkey, Mary Duffy and Theresa Casey carded a score of 45.8 to finish second.

Sunday’s mixed foursomes heralded the opening of Mr Seamus Friel’s Captain’s Week. Liam McDevitt and Margaret Bonner were in outstanding form, their brilliant nett 62 being, by far, the best round of the day.  Some way back in second place were Nigel Houston and Therese Flanagan who overcame a disastrous start to post a nett 66, while Ryan McGowan and Theresa Casey finished third, also with a nett 66.  The gross award went to Foncie McNally and Anne Sharkey with a round of 83.

In representative golf, Joe Doherty’s Ulster Cup team produced a spirited performance to push Murvagh all the way.  However, having gone down by six matches to one in the first leg, they fell just short, losing out by just one match at the end.  Tommy Forbes’ Lawson Cup team had an emphatic victory over Killymoon, winning 14-2 at home, while the Phair Cup squad could only muster 2.5 points away to Castlehume.

This week’s activities at the club are dominated by Saturday’s upcoming Captain’s Day.  With the largest entry of the season predicted, players are asked to be present well in advance of their tee-off time.  For the evening function, doors will open at approx. 10.30pm while visitors should only attend by prior arrangement.  Music will be provided by “Mr Men”.  We wish Seamus the very best for what is sure to be a memorable occasion for himself and his family.

Narrow Defeat for Holy Cross College

Holy Cross College golfers played in the final of the Darren Clarke Golf League last Wednesday and were narrowly defeated by Coleraine Inst. The team had previously come through the group qualifying stages undefeated, having accounted for Rainey Endowed, St. Pats, Maghera, St Mary’s, Magherafelt and a drawn game with Cambridge House. This saw them progress to the quarter-final against St Pats, Armagh. This went to the wire and after losing the first 3 games, the tail “wagged” and Holy Cross squeezed through on a 4-3 scoreline to face Newbridge Integrated. Travelling to Dungannon, the team produced a high standard of golf to ensure their first appearance in the final, with a 5-2 victory. The final just proved a bridge too far against Coleraine, the team going down on a countback, the Bannsiders having won 4 more holes than Strabane. Team coach, Mark Mc Crea, complimented his whole team for their endeavours throughout the whole campaign, displaying impeccable manners and temperament, something that Strabane should be proud of.

Team names, Ciaran Roarty, Lisa Patton, Caolan Crawford, Ciaran Neeson, Eoin O’Neill, Kevin Gallagher, Shay Callaghan.

Baldrick takes “Mark James”

That a spate of excellent scoring has characterised play at Strabane Golf Club over the past couple of weeks comes as no surprise given the superb condition of the Ballycolman course at present for which Paul McFadden and his green-keeping staff must take great credit.

The “Mark James Menswear” stableford, one of the most popular events on the summer schedule, produced a deserving winner in Aidan Baldrick who was a model of consistency in carding two nines of 22 points apiece to post a brilliant 44 points.  After a break from the game, Declan McDonnell is back at his best evidenced by the 42 point return which gained him the runners-up spot.  John Langan, Michael Kelly and Kieran Martin all matched that score but on the break of a tie they were awarded third, fourth and fifth place respectively. Declan Lynch was the Category One winner with 41 points, Martin Patton was best in Category Two with 39 points, with Seamus Walsh continuing his good run of form to take Category Three with 40 points.  Despite a hiccup at the par four ninth, Keith Patterson covered the back nine in one under par to claim the gross prize with 39 points.

Saturday’s “Dixie’s Bar” medal event was won in tremendous style by Adrian McLaughlin.  Playing off a handicap of 12, Adrian dropped three shots to par in the opening nine, but conceded only two in the back nine.  His five over round converted to a marvellous winning 62 nett.  Ryan Kelly showed tremendous promise in taking second place with a 65 nett.  There is little doubt that we shall be hearing more of Ryan over the coming weeks. The ever-consistent Fred McGavigan will rue finishing bogey-bogey, when a level par round was there for the taking.  He finished third with another nett 65. Conor Sharkey (Category One) and Gerard Walsh (Category Two) each carded scores of 66 nett, while Pearse McDevitt went one better in taking Category Three with a nett 65.  The first nine was won by Liam Patton, with Nicky Patton best in the back nine.

Garrick Wood was the latest winner of the Monday Opens, his fine 39 points just getting him home on the break of a tie ahead of Eddie McBrearty.  Cathal McLaughlin was a point adrift in third place, with Portsalon’s Joe Coyle taking the visitor’s prize, also with 38 points.  Paul O’Reilly made a welcome return to form in claiming the gross award with another 38 point return.

The Bank Holiday Open was emphatically won by Ciaran Kelly who dropped only three shots to par in compiling a superb 44 point winning tally. Newtownstewart’s Danny Devine posted 41 points to finish second with Tommy Forbes in third place on 39 points.  Martin McDermott’s 36 point haul gained him the gross award, while Foyle’s John Spence returned to familiar surroundings to claim the visitor’s prize with 35 points.

Castlehume Golf Club’s Rodney Breen made his journey a fruitful one as he topped the leaderboard in the Subway Open. His 39 point return just edged him ahead of Kevin McGinley on count-back. Dermot Corry was a point adrift of the top two in third place, with Lisburn’s WJ Cregge carding 37 points to top the visitor’s section.  The gross category was won by Enda Kennedy who had a 34 point return off a +1 handicap.

The “Noraut” Planners Cup again saw scoring of the highest order, with the top three contenders all comfortably breaking the 40 point barrier.  Despite missing a trio of short putts, T McGranaghan still compiled an impressive 44 points to hold off the challenge of Stephen Quinn who finished just one point shy of the winner.  Pat Corry was a couple of points back on third place, while Enda Kennedy fired a one-under 68 to take the gross prize.

Sunday’s team competition marked the 50th Anniversary of St. Mary’s Boys’ Primary School.  It produced the following result:

1. Oliver McNally, Sammy Devenney, Rachel Devenney, Olive Reid          100pts

2. Paul McGill, Raymond McDermott, Michael McColgan, Aidy McDermott 98pts

3. Kevin Patton, Deirdre Patton, Cathal Begley, Anne-Marie Begley           97pts

4. Paddy O’Kane, Noel McCrory, Mary McCrory, Geraldine Quigley         97pts

Congratulations to Patsy Rouse on claiming the top award in the Past Captains competition on Friday night to ensure him of bragging rights for the next twelve months.  Patsy’s marvellous 40 point winning score was not unexpected as he has shown signs of his very best form over the past month or so.

In ladies’ golf, Mandy Coyne was the clear winner of the Eileen Devine Memorial Cup, one of the qualifying events for the Golfer of the Year title.  Mandy’s excellent 69 nett gave her a couple of shots to spare over the field.  Rosemary Wilson was best in the 0-24 category with a round of 71 nett, with Betty Kelly topping the 25-36 category with a 73 nett return.

The O2 Challenge on Tuesday last produced a much tighter finish, with Catherine Neeson, Heather Mitchell and Teresa Logue all vying for the top spot, each with a good score of 37 points.  On count-back, Neeson was declared the winner with the category awards going to the other two ladies.

The Wednesday mixed team results are:

  1. Mary Duffy, Theresa Casey, Ryan McGowan, Tommy Sharkey.
  2. Angela Houston, Laura McCay, Nigel Houston, Pat Corry.

The Mixed Greensomes event finished thus:

  1. Noreen McNally, Annette Patton, Oliver McNally, Noel McCrory
  2. 2. Angela Houston, Mary Duffy, Nigel Houston, Billy Doherty

In the Junior Section, Kevin Gallagher produced a brilliant 43 points to take the Bank Holiday event.  Second place went to Plunkett Langan with a good 40 points, while Shay Callaghan took third place with 31 points.

In inter-club competitions, Strabane representatives had a disappointing week, the tone being set by the failure of the Junior Cup team to make it past the qualifying stages. Senan Roarty’s Jimmy Bruen team travelled to Dungannon on Friday evening to meet Lisburn GC.  Despite a brave performance, Strabane went down by a 3-2 margin.  Having failed to shine away to Cloughineely in the Donegal League, Strabane need a good performance to overhaul a 4-1 deficit.  They managed to arrive at parity with their visitors in the home leg but were eliminated on a count-back of holes.

The Ulster Cup squad are just about hanging in, though a 6-1 defeat in the away leg does not bode well.  Team captain Joe Doherty will have to use all his motivational skills to galvanise his squad before next Sunday’s return and send them out in a positive frame of mind.

To complete a fairly miserable week, the Irish Mixed Foursomes squad went down 3-2 in the first round to neighbours Newtownstewart, the match being played at Omagh.

Excellent Scoring Conditions at the Club

Over the past week there has been some phenomenal scoring at Strabane Golf Club, due in no small part to the beautiful condition of the course.  Throw in the spell of fine weather that we have experienced of late and you have necessary elements for golf of the highest order.

Saturday’s Strabane/Finn Valley Herald Open attracted the usual huge entry with 200 players vying for the excellent prizes on offer.  Portsalon’s John McGettigan landed the spoils, his fine 41 point tally, off a handicap of 17, giving him a point to spare over runner-up Michael Neeson,  Paul Gallagher also compiled a 40 point total to finish third, while Stephen Alexander and Jim Potts had 38 point returns to fill the minor placings.  Conal Cooke is back to something approaching his very best form and he took the gross award on this occasion with a solid 35 points.  The nines went to Martin McDermott and Denis Porter.

Ronnie Wiley set the scoring standard for the week when he posted a superb 44 points to take the Monday Open.  Such was the competitive nature of the event, however, that such a massive tally only got home on the break of a tie, with second-placed Shane Brown form Letterkenny matching the winner’s score.  A point back in third place was John Brolly, with Conal Cooke again claiming the gross prize with a two-under par 67.  The visitors’ prize was won by Letterkenny’s Vincent McDaid.

Tuesday’s event was the ladies’ “Mary Peters Trust”. Lisa Patton, the brightest young talent in the ladies’ section at the moment, was in fine form as she surged to victory with a 40 point haul.  Rachel Devenney carded 39 points to top the 0-24 category, while the rapidly improving Jenny Rouse was best in the 25-36 category with 37 points.

The Worchester Cup (Mixed Foursomes) competition on Wednesday produced the following qualifiers for the knock-out stages:

1. Declan Lynch and Lorna Duffy                     63.5 nett

2. Ryan McGowan and Teresa Logue              67 nett

3. Liam Curry and Maureen O’Donnell          68.5 nett

4. Liam Doherty and Imelda Doherty            68.5 nett

5. Maurice and Monica McGettigan                69 nett

6. Michael Kelly and Adeline Shiels                69.5 nett

7. Kieran Doherty and Dympna Doherty       70 nett

8. Tommy Forbes and Philomena Cooke        70 nett

Aidan Coyle was the top scorer in Thursday’s Tennents Open, his marvellous 44 point return seeing him home by a point from runner-up Michael O’Neill.  Shane Bonnar from Ballybofey took third place with 41 points, the gross prize going to Enda Kennedy with a one under par 68.  Best visitor on the day was Portsalon’s Conor McGettigan.

In representative golf, Strabane teams have notched up an impressive array of victories over the week.  Joe Doherty’s Ulster Cup squad travelled to Greenacres GC and gained the single point required to take them through to the next round.

Senan Roarty’s Jimmy Bruen team also progressed after beating Silverwood GC at Tandragee.

In the prestigious Senior Cup, Strabane made full use of home advantage in the qualifying round as they posted the best score of the day to emerge as top qualifiers.

The best four scores were:

Strabane            292

Foyle                   292

Portstewart      295

City of Derry    297

Strabane have been drawn to meet City of Derry in the semi-final at the Ballycolman course on June 27.

Hot Curry on top in Sports Centre Open

The Sports Centre Open at Strabane at Strabane Golf Club invariably proves to be one of the stiffest tests that players have to face in the course of a season.  With the course set up to play at its longest, competitors have to be at the top of their game to meet the challenge.  Joe Curry was certainly at his best as he compiled a superb 41 points to top the leaderboard on Saturday last.  It was no great surprise that Roy Patterson was also in contention as he has been in tremendous form of late.  He matched the winning score on this occasion, only losing out on the break of a tie. Damian Carey posted a solid 39 points to finish in third place, with John Etherson and Mark patton filling the minor placings with good scores of 38 points apiece.  Cathal Patton retained the rich vein of form he showed the previous week by taking the gross prize with a two over par round of 71. The category awards went to Danny Duffy (Category One – 38 points, John J. Duffy (Category Two – 37 points) and Pat McGuigan (Category Three – 37 points). Eugene Corry carded 35 points to claim the visitors’ award, while Gerry Glover was best in the guests’ category with 34 points.

The Riversdale Otters Open team event which was held on Sunday produced the following result:

1. Kevin McGinley, Shane McLaughlin, Pearse McLaughlin, Daniel Toland – 92 points

2. Aaron McGinn, John Brolly, Niall Coulter, Michael Baldrick – 92 points

3. Garrick Wood, Sean McCrossan, Paul McGarrigle, John Tinney – 90 points

Thursday’s JD Print Open provided two of the main talking points of the week at the club.  That Jude O’Neill won the event was no great shock, but it was the manner of his victory that caught the eye.  As he stood on the tee at the par four fifteenth it looked for all the world that his round was a good one, but hardly a great one.  One shot later that assessment had changed dramatically, as his magnificent drive sailed towards the green and found the bottom of the cup for one of golf’s rarities – an albatross. Buoyed up by that remarkable occurrence, O’Neill pressed on to eventually post a winning 42 points.  Michael Neeson and Club Captain Seamus Friel finished second and third respectively, each carding 41 points.  The second incident of note on Thursday last was the brilliant four under par 65 shot by Enda Kennedy which naturally gave him the gross prize, and by some distance at that!  Following on from his victory in the Frylite Scratch Cup the previous weekend, it seems safe to say that Kennedy is now back to his very best.

Last Monday’s Open was dominated by Sean Lamberton from Foyle Golf Club.  Playing of a 16 handicap, the Derry man compiled a hugely impressive 44 points to put himself on a different plain from the rest of the field.  Kieran O’Neill was second, though a long way back on 37 points, with Barry Patterson third on a similar score.  Portsalon players Eamon McConigley and Shane Sandilands took the remaining honours, the former having the best gross return (75) with the latter claiming the visitors’ prize with 34 points.

In ladies’ golf, Maeve Crowe came out on top in the Georgina Gregg Cup, her winning score of 72 nett just getting her home on countback.  Many Coyne headed the 0-24 category with another nett 72, while Olive Reid was best in the 25-36 category with a nett 74.

The Wednesday Mixed Pairs event continued to attract a healthy entry.  Kieran O’Neill and Lorna Duffy were the top pairing last week, their 35 point tally giving them three to spare over Oliver and Noreen McNally who had spent the previous couple of weeks honing their skills in sunny Florida.  Nigel Houston and Mary O’Reilly finished third on 31 points.

Players should note that next Wednesday’s competition is the qualifying round for the Worchester Cup tournament, and will be played over 18 holes.

In representative golf, the plaudits this week go to Joe Doherty and his Ulster Cup squad.  Drawn at home in the first leg of their tie with Green Acres GC, Strabane produced an imperious display in building a flawless 7-0 margin which, barring complacency, should see them through to the next round.

The Irish Mixed Foursomes squad came through the qualifying round successfully and will meet Newtownstewart in the first matchplay round, the tie to be played in Omagh.

Frylite Stratch Cup Results

Kennedy secures Scratch Cup

Winner of Frylite Scratch Cup 2010 - Enda Kennedy with Captain Seamus Friel and Eamon McCay from Frylite

Sunday’s prestigious fixture was the Frylite Scratch Cup which attracted an excellent entry made up of the most talented golfers in the north-west and beyond.  66 players set out for the 36 hole event representing, in total, 17 clubs.  Strabane’s Enda Kennedy was installed as favourite for the competition and he did not disappoint.  A solid level par 69 put him in pole position and he followed up with a one-over 70 to post a winning score of 139.  At one point it looked like a Kennedy one-two with cousin Paddy posting a four over par total of 142, but City of Derry’s Kealin Quigg matched that score and snatched the runner’s-up spot on the break of a tie, relegating Paddy Kennedy to third.  Foyle’s Damian McKenna took fourth place with a 145 return.

In the nett section, Ballybofey’s Matthew McCauley took the honours with a nett 136, one shot better than Strabane’s Mark McColgan.  Another of the home players, Gary Duffy posted 139 nett to finish third.

Double Bill of Weekend Golf

Medicare winners

Medicare winner Roy Patterson. Also in photo Johnny McGonagle from Medicare, Michael Etherson (2nd), Cathal Patton (Gross) Johnny Potts (3rd) and Captain Seamus Friel

The first of the weekend’s double bill at Strabane Golf Club over the weekend was the Medicare Open played on Saturday.  Though the course was in excellent condition, a cool northerly breeze ensured that players would have to work hard to compile their scores.  As it turned out, four excellent scores of 40 points were posted, the best of these returned by the winner Roy Patterson.  This was Patterson’s second victory within a matter of weeks, having already excelled in the Hugh Harley Open in mid-April.  Young Michael Etherson picked up the second prize with Johnny Potts coming in third.  Cathal Patton seemed to have the competition at his mercy after a blistering opening nine which saw him reach the turn four under par.  However, his challenge faltered on the inward half and he eventually carded a one over par round of 70 to take the gross award. Adrian Nelson topped Category One, and Frankie Houston was best in Category Two each with fine scores of 39 points.  Seamus Devenney headed Category Three with 38 points, with the nines going to Cyril Downey and Eddie McBrearty.

Kennedy secures Scratch Cup

Other winners were:

Gross Round 1            John McCaughan (Ballybofey) 72

Gross Round 2            Martin McDermott (Strabane) 71

Nett Round 1              Cathal Patton (Strabane) 68 nett

Nett Round 2              Seamus McGranaghan (Castle Hume) 67 nett

The CRY Charity Open kicked off the week’s programme and it was another Patterson, this time Barry, who led the way.  On a day when the course gave up very few good scores Patterson’s 38 points was enough to seal victory.  Kevin Gallagher and Jason Kelly each returned 37 points to finish second and third respectively, with Paul McGill taking the gross prize with a tally of 35 points.

The Tuesday competition, the ladies’ NSPCC Betterball was won by the experienced duo of Philomena Cooke and Lady Captain, Dympna Doherty.  In what was a close run thing, they just got the better of Shauna Patton and Jennifer Rouse, with both pairings returning 41 points.

Sammy Devenney and Lorna Duffy took the Wednesday mixed pairs event, their 31 point card giving them a couple to spare over runners-up Barry and Olive Reid.  Third place went to Patsy Wilson and Dympna Doherty, again with a total of 29 points.

The T. Oscar Rollins Open on Thursday turned out to be a family affair with brothers Martin and Joe Elliott battling it out for the top slot.  Martin prevailed on this occasion, his 41 point card giving him a two point winning margin over Joe.  Pat Corry took third place with 38 points, with Enda Kennedy picking up the gross award after shooting a level par 69.  Newtownstewart’s Ian Ashenhurst took the visitors’ prize with a 38 point return.

In representative golf, Joe Doherty’s Ulster Cup squad made it safely through to the next round with a hard-earned victory over Cushendall.  After going down by five matches to two in the away leg, the team bounced back to secure victory by almost completing a shut-out at home, dropping only half a point on the Ballycolman course.

In the Jimmy Bruen tournament, Strabane played well to make it through the qualifying stages at Tandragee and Senan Roarty’s team will confront Silverwood in the first of the matchplay rounds.

The Pearse Purcell team travelled to Omagh for their qualifying attempt, but failed to progress to the play-off stages.

The Ulster Fourball squad fared a bit better as they gleaned a  3-2 advantage from the home leg of their tie with Castlehume.  With seven holes up, Maurice Harkin’s team have given themselves a chance of making it through to the next round.

Finally, the  Fred Daly team went down to a strong Banbridge squad, a result that was almost inevitable after Strabane lost the home leg by a 5-2 margin.

The May Monthly Medal at Strabane Golf Club was won in some style by Donal Cairns on Saturday last.  On a day when no fewer than twenty players managed to crack the par of the course, Cairns carded a superb nett 62 to ease home by a shot from the ever-reliable Danny Duffy.  Gerry Casey was a further shot back in third place.  Paddy O’Kane secured the Category One prize with a 66 nett, John J. Duffy topped Category Two with a 65 nett, with Chris Timoney heading Category Three with another nett 66. William Potts and John Doherty had the best first and second nine respectively.

Good scoring was also the order of the day in Thursday’s Open with Ronnie Wiley and Pearse McLaughlin leading the way, each having excellent returns of 41 points.  On countback, Wiley was declared the winner, McLaughlin second and Brian Haughey third with the best of several scores of 40 points.  Enda Kennedy topped the gross category with a level par round of 69.

Sunday’s team event was in aid of the Special Olympics and, as always, was a highly competitive affair with only a couple of points separating the first three groups home.  The winning combination of Damian Carey, Eamon McCay, Liam McGinley and Brian O’Kane produced a round of 92 points to win by one from second-placed Garrick Woods, John Tinney, Sean McCrossan and Paul McGarrigle. On 90 points, and in third place, were Jason Kelly, Noel Kelly, David Mullen and Ryan Kelly with the ladies’ prize being picked up by Mary McCrory, Annette Patton, Bernie O’Kane and Adeline Shiels who returned a creditable 85 points.

This week’s mixed event on Wednesday last went to Nigel and Angela Houston.  They combined to post a winning 29 points, one better than runners-up Damian Carey and Theresa Casey.  Liam Curry and Alison Curry also returned 28 points to finish third.

The ladies’ Camus Cup was won by Alison Curry with a fine round of 71 nett.  Shauna Patton was best in the 0-24 category with a nett 72, while Donna Doherty’s nett 71 earned her the category 25-36 award.
