David Mullen maintained the excellent form he has shown throughout the winter to take the stableford event at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday last. He posted an excellent 15 hole total of 38 points to get home on the break of a tie from the ever-improving George McCay. Damian Lynch, assisted in no small measure by holing his tee shot at the par three second, carded a fine 37 points to finish third. Enda Kennedy, off a scratch handicap, returned a sub-par round of 34 points to claim the gross award.

Sunday’s Supervalu Springers League is entering its the final stages. Long time leaders, “2PRs” (Eric Reid, Barry Reid, Johnny Potts, William Potts), strengthened their hold at the top of the table, their combined scores of 84 points in Week 8 taking them to a 386 point accumulated total and, more importantly, extended their lead over their nearest challengers, “The Lock Keepers” by a crucial couple of points. It would appear that the league is at their mercy, and it will take either a disastrous last week performance or a superhuman effort by the second placed quartet to deny “2PRs” the title. Should “The Lock Keepers” (Pat Patton, John Duffy, Matt Keyes, Martin Gormley), however, rediscover the form they showed a couple of weeks ago when they powered into contention on the back of a superb 96 point aggregate, then they may yet upset the odds. Going into the final round, they trail the leaders by nine points. “Always Late” (Liam Curry, Mark Sharkey, Tommy Sharkey, Anthony Brennan) leapfrogged “The Gravy Boys” to move into third place but, while they could yet make it into second place, their chances of topping the table would appear to be remote.

This week’s Supervalu Sweep produced the following result:

1. Martin McCallion & John Hegarty 49 points

2. John Duffy and Martin Gormley 45 points

3. John Brolly and Niall Coulter 45 points

Results from the latest JJ Monday Team event:

1. M. Forbes, Paddy McGarrigle, F. McNally, G. Quinn 102pts

2. D. Porter, J. Wasson, G. Turner, H. Casey 97pts

3. Paul McGarrigle, C. Patton, T. McDermott, L. Doherty 94pts

Colm McGrath produced an excellent round of 38 points to win Week 7 of the Thursday Club but only by the minimum margin of a half-point from in-form Pascal McGillian. Liam McCool took third place with a solid 36 points.

Saturday golfers should note that timesheets will recommence on Saturday March 20. The full programme for the official season will be available shortly.

Junior girls will have a four week coaching session with PGA professional Noel Callan beginning this Friday (March 12) at Hill Valley Golf Centre. All girls are encouraged to attend and new members would be particularly welcome. For further details contact Girls’ Junior Convenor Catherine Neeson on 07742443803.

The Strabane Golf Club website is updated on a regular basis and detailed information on upcoming events, news, results, entertainment etc is readily available at www.strabanegolfclub.co.uk.

Liam Patton made a welcome return to form to take the top award in Saturday’s stableford event at Strabane Golf Club. Liam returned an excellent 36 points to hold off the challenge of John Duffy and Pat Patton who each posted 35 points to finish second and third respectively. The gross prize went to Ben Corry with a typically steady 31 points.

The Supervalu Springers League, played on Sunday, saw the “2PRs” retain their advantage at the top of the table, their 88 point haul at the weekend elevating them to an impressive 302 point total. The leading quartet – Eric and Barry Reid and William and Johnny Potts – are currently seven points clear of the field, a lead that is comfortable though not insurmountable. On the evidence of last Sunday’s performance, the “Lock Keepers” – Pat Patton, John Duffy, Matt Keyes and Martin Gormley – are quite capable of overhauling the leaders. Their tremendous 96 point return catapulted them to second place and into a position from which they could well launch a genuine challenge. The third-placed team, “The Gravy Boys” (Michael and Adrian Baldrick, John Brolly and Niall Coulter), have been on the coat-tails of the leaders for some weeks now and they are certainly not out of it should the pacesetters slip up. They presently lie five points adrift of the “Lock Keepers”.

Needless to say, the “Lock Keepers” dominated the weekly Supervalu Sweep:

1. Pat Patton & John Duffy 48 points

2. Matt Keyes & Martin Gormley 48 points

3. Dermott Corry & Aidan Coyle 46 points

The Thursday Club (Week Five) produced the following result:

1. Tommy Falconer 38 points

2. Pascal McGillian 37.5 points

3. Ronnie Wiley 37 points

In Week Six, the winners were:

1. Paul McGarrigle 36 points

2. Liam Doherty 35 points

3. Paddy Doyle 35 points

The latest round of JJ’s Monday Club ended thus:

1. H. McCusker, J. Shiels, E. Patton, J. Henderson 77 points

2. J. Callan, H. McGarrigle, J. Coyle, F. O’Kane 75 points

3. K. Keegan, O. McNally, C. Patton, M. Doyle 73.5 points

Roy Patterson posted a superb 45 points to win the weekly stableford at Strabane Golf Club on Saturday last. The measure of his superiority can be gauged by the margin of his victory – fully six points ahead of runner-up Matt Keyes. John J Duffy had a 38 point return to take third place, with Martin McDermott claiming the gross award with 35 points.

In Sunday’s Supervalu Springers league, “2PR’s” moved in the vanguard by virtue of an excellent 92 point haul at the weekend. Their total of 214 points means they lead by seven from “Always Late”. A further one point back sees the “Gravy Boys” share third spot with “The Pros”.

The Supervalu Sweep produced the following result;

1. Eric and Barry Reid 48 points

2. Michael O’Neill and Damian Carey 47 points

3. Nigel Houston and Brian O’Kane 46 points

Last week’s Thursday Club winner was Hugh Casey, his fine 41 point return giving him a clear three point advantage over Sean Quinn. Pascal McGillian also amassed 38 points to take third place.

Results of the latest round of JJ’s Monday team event are:

1. P. McAneny, P. Doyle. T. McGranaghan, P. McDaid 102pts

Last Saturday’s stableford event at Strabane Golf Club was won by Kevin Keegan who posted an impressive 38 points over 15 holes. Jason Kelly was a couple of points adrift in second place, with Kevin Gallagher a further shot back in third place. The gross award went to Conal Cooke with 29 points.

The Supervalu Springers league got back on track on Sunday, having suffered some disruption due to the inclement conditions. The “Uncle Buck” quartet of Freddie Patterson, Mark McDermott, Brian Cairns and Martin Patton took full advantage of the favourable conditions to take their total to 126 points, sufficient to give them a two point lead at the head of the table. The “Under-Fifties” currently occupy second place, one point ahead of the experienced “Always late.”

The Supervalu Sweep finished thus:

1. Martin Elliott and John Hegarty - 42 points

2. Barry Reid and William Potts – 41 points

3. Liam Patton and Paul McLaughlin – 40 points

Week Two of the Thursday Club saw Jimmy Wasson just edge out Eamon Kennedy for the top spot, with both players returning 35 points. Damian McGranaghan finished third, just one point shy of the winning score.

Brian Haughey took the honours in Week Three of the series, his 32 point haul getting him home on the break of a tie from Eamon Kennedy who again finished as runner-up. Denis Porter’s 31 points was enough to take the third prize.

There will be music in the clubhouse this Saturday evening, February 13.

The death of Brian Patton this week has cast a long shadow across Strabane Golf Club. Brian was not only the most gifted golfer Strabane has ever produced but he was also one of the town’s finest ambassadors. His exploits on golf courses across the country are well documented but beyond those talents, for those who knew him well, his most enduring qualities were his warmth and good humour. He reached out to many at the club, from the hopeful to the hopeless, and shared his knowledge of the game he loved. He took especial satisfaction from seeing those who availed of his advice fulfilling their potential. He will be sadly missed. Our sincerest condolences go to his wife Anna and family, with the assurance that Brian’s name will always be fondly remembered and inextricably linked with the history of Strabane Golf Club.

It is somehow appropriate that in the week of Brian Patton’s passing, the final of the Leo Kavanagh Memorial “Sperrin Springs” Winter Cup should be won by one of his protégé’s. Freddie Patterson would be the first to admit that had it not been for Brian’s encouragement he would never have become involved in the game. Yet on Sunday last Freddie, in partnership with Mark McDermott, claimed the Winter Cup after an epic battle with the gallant duo of David Mullen and Bernard McShane. Both pairings had dominated their qualifying sections from the outset and the showdown between the two was always going to be a close run thing. And it could not have been closer. In a final that was nip and tuck for most of the way, Patterson and McDermott eventually put their stamp on it on the final green, winning by a one-hole margin. In the third place play-off, Roy Patterson and Brian Millar just edged out Paul McGarrigle and Sean McCrossan.

The league winners were:
Section A
1. Foncie McNally and Anthony Brennan
2. Martin Gormley and Matt Keyes
3. Denis Porter and Jimmy Wasson

Section B
1. John Maxwell and Francie Conwell
2. Jonathan McGonigle and Brian Kelly

Freddie Patterson and Mark McDermott will meet David Mullen and Bernard McShane in the final of the Sperrin Springs Winter Cup at Strabane Golf Club on Sunday next. Patterson and McDermott stormed to an impressive 5 and 4 semi-final victory over Roy Patterson and Brian Millar, while Mullen and McShane were taken to the seventeenth by Paul McGarrigle and Sean McCrossan before their berth in the final was secured. Patterson and McDermott will go into the decider as slight favourites, but Mullen and McShane have shown good form throughout the league stage and could well spring a surprise. Last week’s beaten semi-finalists will contest the third place play-off, also on Sunday.

While most of the focus is on the match-play stages the league race continues. Standings at the penultimate stage are as follows:
Section A
1. Foncie McNally and Anthony Brennan 22.5 points
2. Martin Gormley and Matt Keyes 21.5 points
3. Keith Patterson and Joe Breslin 19 points
3. Denis Porter and Jimmy Wasson 19 points

Section B
1. Jonathan McGonigle and Brian Kelly 21 points
2. Michael Forbes and Seamus McPhilemy 20 points
2. John Maxwell and Francie Conwell 20 points

Saturday’s Stableford was played over 15 holes this week with the in-form Stuart McFeeters posting a fine winning tally of 37 points. One point back in second place was Charlie Patton while Jonathan McGonigle took third place with 35 points. Denis Porter had the best gross return of 30 points.

Stuart McFeeters was again at the head of affairs in last week’s Thursday Club, taking the top award on the break of a tie with 33 points. Runner-up was Kevin Gallagher, with Jimmy Wasson in third place, also with 33 points.
Winners in last Monday’s JJ Team event were:
1. D. Porter, G. Turner, J. Wasson, H. Casey 79pts
2. F. McNally, P. McGarrigle, G. Quinn, M. Forbes 71pts
3. J. Callan, D. Cairns, D. Cairns, J. Coyle 69pts

The final of the John Duffy Junior Winter Cup saw Ryan McGowan and Ciaran Neeson pitted against Damian Roarty and Aaron Gillespie. The match was played in a wonderful spirit and produced some golf of the highest quality. McGowan and Neeson eventually got their noses in front and a superb tee shot from young Neeson at the sixteenth put paid to any hopes that of a comeback that Roarty and Gillespie might have harboured. McGowan and Neeson took the title on a three and two scoreline. Rachid Rihane and Ciaran Roarty came through the league stages to take third place, though only on countback from Brendan McCrory and Kevin Gallagher. The Junior Convenor, Kevin Neeson, and his Committee paid tribute to the competition sponsor, John Duffy, without whose generosity the tournament would simply not have happened.

On the entertainment front, this Saturday night promises to be one of the highlights of the festive programme with “The Bizz” providing the music for the Christmas Party Night. There are still a few available bookings for the meal and entertainment, while door admission will be from 10.30pm.

A reminder also that the “twin ticket” can still be purchased from Tommy Forbes at the clubhouse, providing reduced fee admission to both the Boxing Night and New Year’s Eve entertainment. It is on offer for £10 to members, and £12 to visitors.
