Springers 2012 - Results & League Table – Updated 22/01/12
The Springers will be starting on Sunday 16th January. A sheet has been put on the notice-board.
With all the bad weather we have had over the last few months, we thought we wouldn’t get this competition finished!
But thanks to the weather easing of a wee bit, and the good work of the greens staff, we were able to play the semi-finals last Sunday.
Father and son duo of Eric & Barry Reid saw of the challenge Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty.
In the other semi final Aidan Corry & Oliver Cresswell beat the clubhouse favourites, Mark Sharkey & Ronnie Wiley.
Winter Cup Final – Eric and Barry Reid v Aiden Corry and Oliver Creswell
The final will be played on Sunday 15th January @ 10.30.
Presentation of all the prizes will take place on Friday 27th January @ 9pm sharp.
The Ladies held a presentation night recently. Photos from the night in our Gallery
Due to the bereavement of Mr Charlie Friel
the AGM scheduled for Wednesday 14th December
has been cancelled and rescheduled for
Tuesday 20th December @ 8pm
As you all know the course has been closed over the last week or two, which means the final two weeks of the Winter Cup Cup couldn’t be played.
The presentation which was scheduled for Friday 16th has now been cancelled until after the Winter Cup has been finished.
As some of you might already know, we have installed a new competition and handicapping package from CLUB2000.
We now have a touch screen that will allow you to enter competitions, check your handicap and even check the balance on your card!
With this new package comes Howdidido, which allows you access your playing record online. Results will be downloaded to Howdidido, and these can be sent to you via email or text if you so wish.
This is a free service, and all you have to do to avail of this is to register on the Howdidido website.
Following an exhaustive, four-year review of golf’s 34 playing Rules, nine principal Rules have been amended to improve clarity and ensure penalties are proportionate. Significant changes include:
• Ball Moving After Address (Rule 18-2b). A new exception is added which exonerates the player from penalty if their ball moves after it has been addressed when it is known or virtually certain that they did not cause the ball to move. For example, if it is a gust of wind that moves the ball after it has been addressed, there is no penalty and the ball is played from its new position.
• Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions (Rule 13-4). Exception 2 to this Rule is amended to permit a player to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at any time, including before playing from that hazard, provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and Rule 13-2 (improving lie, area of intended stance or swing or line of play) is not breached.
See GUI website for more details Rules

GOLF COURSE GLOWS IN THE DARK!
Night time golf proved a great success on Friday night past, with heightened Media Coverage of the event adding even more to the enjoyment of the spectacle, including Sky Sports News who were present to record clips and interviews from the evening. In all 75 players, both Ladies and Gents, took to the fairways armed with a clear golf ball with a luminous stick inside, their necklace glow stick and some with miners type lights which had to be switched off while playing their shots. The top five holes were lit up with beacons like an airport runway showing the competitors the route to take, the greens and bunkers were similarly lit up in different colours and putting was aided by further glowing sticks in the holes. Almost £1500 was raised on the evening for the local Branch of C.R.Y., Cardiac Risk in the Young, with the present chairperson of the group, former Tyrone GAA Captain Brian Dooher also competing in the event. There was a close finish to the event with no fewer than seven players equalling the best score of the night nine points and on break of tie. The winner was declared as Oliver McNally, with Denis Porter and Kevin Keegan second and third.
Many thanks to all the sponsors of the night and to the organising committee headed by Vice –President Seamus Friel aided by James Patton, Jimmy Duncan, Sean McIntyre, Michael Kennedy, Gerry Glover and Brian O’Kane. Hopefully this will become an annual event in the future.

Sperrin Springs Winter Cup
This Sunday will see the final week of qualifying in The Sperrin Springs Winter cup with all the semi-final places still up for grabs in what should be an intriguing weeks play with several key fixtures set to determine the eventual qualifiers in either of the sections.
In section (A) Keith Patterson and Billy Doherty lead the way on 19.5 pts after some great results in recent weeks including inflicting the first defeat of the campaign on early pacesetters Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty on Sunday past, their opponents this week are Oliver Creswell and Aidan Corry and if Patterson and Doherty can avoid defeat they will Qualify for the last four, probably along with the winners of the match between Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty who take on Freddie Patterson and Michael Baldrick, with John Maxwell and John Brolly still in the frame looking to take advantage of any late slip ups!
In section (B) the proceedings are slightly more clear cut with Ronnie Wiley and Mark Sharkey back on top on 20 pts after two back to back wins they will qualify if they take a solitary point from this weeks match against John Hegarty and John Tinney, they will be joined in the semi-final by William Potts and Johnny Potts if they can win their last fixture against Stephen Curry and Gerard Foley, with Eric and Barry Reid also still in contention despite losing to the leaders on Sunday Past.

All proceeds went to Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).
The winner on the night, on a break of tie, was Oliver McNally with 9 points.
Strabane Golf Club members can have fun as they test their skills in a unique competition - Night Golf Challenge on Friday 18th November 2011, open to ladies & gents.
Golfers will play the top five holes using glow-in-the-dark golf balls and follow a course marked with glowing markers to guide them from hole to hole.
1 Play all shots with your club face parallel to the glowstick in the ball ( this prevents the glowstick falling out), please check that the glowstick is secure when you are placing it on the mat.
2 Always use your winter mat – normal winter rules apply
3 No DRIVERS (3 woods are ok). The ball can damage the face of the drivers
4 Do not shine torches on the ball when hitting or putting
5 No torches allowed on the green to read putts or when putting
6 When leaving the green, flash your torches on and off so that the fourball behind know when you are leaving the green.
We want people to enjoy themselves, and have a bit of fun. But safety is our No 1 priority, please be very careful. Make sure you stay away when people in your fourball are taking their shot. Also make sure that the fourball in front has moved away and signalled to you, before playing your shot.
There will be entertainment in the club afterwards, presentation should be around 11pm.
Course Slowly Recovering
As a result of the recent monsoon like conditions the golf course has taken an early Winter battering from the rains, leaving parts of the course extremely wet especially in the semi-roughs which have become particularly difficult to play from and as a result the Winter mats have had to be introduced somewhat earlier this year than was anticipated, however thanks to the sterling work from our greens-staff play has been possible for the most part.
Denis Porter (9) took the previous weeks 15 holes Stableford event with a fine 37 pts thanks to an eye catching one under gross back nine to finish ahead of Declan Lynch (8) who’s score of 34 pts was creditable in the conditions, third went to Dermott Corry (19) with 33 pts, while the gross prize was claimed by Ben Corry (4) with 28 gross pts.
With the more favourable conditions for play on Saturday past there was a much better entry for the weekly Stableford event which went to Shane McLaughlin (12), who has taken his great summer form into the Autumn returning a blistering 39 pts to romp home from the runner up Eugene Patton (22) who had 36 pts, the same total as third placed Noel Kelly (13) with the gross on this occasion going to Keith Patterson with 27pts.
Thursday Club
The popular Thursday Club event is in full swing and has reached week 6 in the first phase. Week fives competition went to Charlie Patton with 36 pts with Aidan Corry the runner up with 35 pts and Hugo McCusker third with 34 pts. Week six went to Denis Porter with 36 pts with Brian Haughey the runner up with 35 pts and Jimmy Henderson claiming 3rd with 35pts also.
Denis Porter now leads the way in the golfer of the year table with 84 pts just one clear of Ronnie Wiley with 83 pts.
Winter Cup
The Sperrin Springs Winter Cup has progressed through week 4 with the league tables in both sections very close affairs. In section (A)
Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty currently lead the way on 14 pts having won all four off their matches to date the latest win seeing them overcoming the challenge of the highly fancied David Mullen and Ryan Stevenson securing 3.5 pts, their opponent this week will be John Maxwell and John Brolly who have quietly moved into second place despite losing their match in week 3, these two will meet in this weeks series of matches in what should be a close encounter. Currently third in the section are Keith Patterson and Billy Doherty on 12 pts and they take on 4th placed David Friel and George McCay this week.
In section (B) There is a three way tie at the table summit after leaders Ronnie Wiley and Mark Sharkey lost on Sunday past to Stephen Curry and Gerard Foley who themselves have moved into contention just half a point behind the leaders. This weeks fixtures will see Wiley and Sharkey against fellow table toppers William Potts and Johnny Potts with Eric and Barry Reid taking on Curry and Foley.

Huge turnout for Captains Outing
A record 162 players travelled to Ballybofey G.C last weekend for the annual Captains outing on a day when thankfully the weather stayed kind and conditions were ideal for good scoring
With 40 players either equalling or bettering the par for the course, many thanks also to the host club Ballybofey for the use of their facilities and many compliments were paid to the condition of the course on the day.
The winner on the day with a fine score of 44 pts was Albert McNally (19) just narrowly beating Past Captain Seamus Friel (21) on break of tie, third went to young Kevin Gallagher (8) 40 pts with home member Freddie Wilson (9) putting his local knowledge to good use recording the same total of 40 pts, 5th went to Denis Porter (9) with Hugo mcCusker (13) taking 6th both with 39 pts.
Congratulations to our Captain Brian O’Kane on his year to date, the huge turnout for this event is testament to his hard work and popularity throughout his Captain’s year. Also thanks to the sponsors of the event, Caldwell’s Motor Factors, Gerry Casey and Sean Devine and to Tommy and his catering staff for the superb meal laid on for the players on their return.

All the club Matchplay competitions have now been completed, The Jones Cup was retained by Stephen McCay for the second consecutive year defeating Freddie Wilson in a very close encounter with the match going to the final hole.
The Gallagher Memorial Cup went to Patrick McCrossan who defeated Kevin Neeson two and one and the Lawson Cup went to John Brolly who beat Martin Foley also two and one.

Our under 16 junior boys will have to make the journey to North West G.C as their final on Saturday past was not completed. When bad light halted play Strabane had lost the first two matches and tied the last one, this match must be decided at tie holes and if the local lads can win that one the entire match will have finished equal, and a further sudden death playoff would then be needed to decide the destination of the trophy so good luck to the boys involved in that game.

Strabane Golf Club Report – W/E 25th September 2011
“Golfer of the Year Title Shared”
For the first time ever, Strabane has joint Golfer of the Year winners. Nicky Patton and Micky Neeson emerged on top with 94 points each for the 2011 season, edging out long-time leader, Darren Crawford, who finished 3rd on 90pts. At the half-way stage of the year it was Patton who led among the three eventual leaders but with one month to go things had changed and he trailed both Crawford and Neeson who sat on 88pts and 80pts respectively. But it was Patton who put in the strong finish, accumulating 27 points in the last four weeks to catch up with Neeson, who must have thought he had done enough when he secured 12 points on the last day. Congratulations to both winners on their consistent performance throughout 2011.

STRABANE GOLF CLUB REPORT W-E 11 SEPT 2011
BIG BEN WINS GORMLEY’S OPTICIAN’S OPEN
Ben Corry followed up his gross prize win at last month’s TBF McElholm by taking first place overall at this week’s Gormley’s Optician’s Open from Paul Gallagher (2nd) and David Mullen (3rd). A break of tie was required with the first three each returning 39 points on a day when the low handicappers dominated in the face of strong winds and some very difficult pin placements. Declan (Guy) McDonnell took his second prize of the week claiming the Gross prize with 36 pts.
Frankie Gallagher took 4th with 37pts and Sean Callaghan, playing out of Narin & Portnoo Golf Club took 5th with 36pts. There was a high turnout of visitors for Strabane’s latest open competition and Newtownstewart’s Roy Kee took the Visitor’s prize with34 pts. Declan O’Hare and Martin Keys took the Nines.
MONDAY OPEN
The low handicappers also dominated early in the week as Declan McDonnell emerged the winner in the Monday Open with 39pts. Gadgetman Stephen McCay just failed to emulate his father George’s recent win, coming in 2nd on 38 pts. (must be listening at last to his Sky Caddie Thingy!). Playing partner Paddy Kennedy took 3rd with 38 pts with Peter Doherty (Jun) claiming the Gross on 34 pts. The Visitor’s prize was won by Chris Breen from Ballybofey/Stranorlar.
JD PRINT OPEN
Liam Curry made a welcome return to the winner’s roster with a fantastic 43 pts to take first place at Thursday’s JD Print Open. Enda Kennedy took 2nd with an equally impressive 41 pts playing of a 1 handicap and Liam Mc Devitt took 3rd also with 41 pts. Keith Patterson claimed the Gross prize with 40 pts.
OWEN ROES GOLF CLASSIC
Forty One Teams played in Sunday’s Owen Roes Golf Classic. Dermott and Mark Corry, Dermott Cairns and Jim Duffy took the first team prize with 92 points. The Baldrick “Buggy” Brothers Aidan and Michael, playing alongside Gerard Stewart and John Brolly took 3rd whilst Nigel and Angela Houston, Gerard Casey and Ryan McGowan took 4th.
The Team of Connor O’Neill, Kieran Kelly, Ryan McShane and Cathal McShane took the Non-Players prize.

Longest Drive went to Ryan McGowan and Pat O’Neill took Nearest the Pin.
LADIES RESULTS
The poor weather meant there was no ladies competition on Tuesday and only a reduced mixed competition on Wednesday. It was all worthwhile however for Catherine Neeson who, after numerous unsuccessful attempts playing with husband Kevin, secured a first place playing alongside son Ciaran. Declan Lynch and Mary McGuigan took 2nd place.
INTERCLUB NEWS
Congratulations to Freddie Patterson’s team who secured his second win as Captain of the Roberts Cup in the final against Castlehume. The over 60′s Jimmy Carroll team could only manage 4th place out of 8 in the final but ran out winners of the Ulster title.

Strabane Golf Club Report – w/e 28 August 2011
George Gets His First Win
The Pat Kirk Open was the stage for George McCay’s first ever competition win on Saturday past. Lefthander George took first place with 40 points, thanks in some part to a driver he bought two years ago from his brother Eamon, who was equally delighted with the win as George has consistently refused to pay for the purchase until it proved its worth on the course!
Brian Cairns took second place with a very credible 39 points and Barry Whyte hit the right notes to take 3rd with 38 points on a break of tie. Aidan Coyle (38 pts) took 4th and Paul Gallagher took 5th following a six way count back with 37pts. One handicapper Paddy Kennedy claimed another gross prize with a round of 33 points, playing alongside Stephen “Gadget Man” McCay who, despite the use of the electronic aid Sky Caddie failed to feature in the prizes! Paul O’Hare’s putting form returned at last to allow him to take the First Nine prize with Ciaran Patton taking the Second Nine.
Monday Open – The disqualification of a higher score saw Monday’s Open won by John Brolly with 39 points on a BOT from Declan “The Guy” McDonnell. Joe Elliott’s 38 pts was enough to take 3rd place. Six handicapper, Fred McGavigan took the Gross prize with 37 points. Members are reminded that all scorecards must be signed by both player and marker before being returned.
Donna’s Flowerbox Ladies Open – The Lady Captain, Norma Brogan (12), took first place in Donna’s Flowerbox Open on Tuesday with 38 points, from Greencastle’s Philomena Cooke (15) on 37 pts following another break of tie. Lorna Duffy took 3rd place and the Gross prize went to 2 handicapper, Helen Jones with 29 pts. Catherine Neeson, Madeline McColgan and Ballybofey’s Christine Lynch took the category prizes. The Nines were secured by Helen McGaughy from Newtownstewart and Rosemary Wilson with Violet Spratt taking the visitor’s prize with 33 points.
The results continues a series of wins for middle range handicappers on what is becoming regarded as a fairly difficult course for lady golfers.
Wednesday Night Mixed - Eighteen pairs participated in Wednesday Night’s Mixed Competition and 35 points was enough to secure first place for Nigel and Angela Houston. Damien Mullen and Lorna Duffy took 2nd with 34 pts and Sammy Devenney took 3rd place for the second consecutive week but with Olive Reed as his partner this time (33pts).
TBF McElholm Open – Barber Paul McGarrigle trimmed his handicap to 12 after winning Thursday’s TBF McElholm Open with an exceptional 46 points. Paddy Kennedy’s superb 3 under par 66 converted to 40 points to secure 2nd place with James Langan taking 3rd with 39 pts. Ben Corry returned to the prizes with 36 points to take the gross.
Sunday’s “Baby Hope” Competition – Caroline Connolly carried husband Frankie (as usual) as they teamed up with Martin and Jennifer Rouse to win Sunday’s Baby Hope competition with an incredible 102 points. Micky Neeson, joined the Three Stoogies Team of Martin Patton, Aidan Baldrick and Brian Cairns to take 2nd with 98 pts on a BOT. Stephen Curry, Francie Conwell, Liam and Gerald Foley took 3rd place. Congratulations to Johnny Potts who aced the second hole to take the Nearest The Pin prize. The Non-Golfers first prize was won by the team of Eamon and Peter McGrellis and Victor and Raymond Brolly with 91 points.
Inter Club News - President Pat Patton’s Lawson Cup team took a slender 9-7 lead over near neighbours Newtownstewart after the first leg of the final played in Strabane last Friday but fell 12 – 4 on Monday in the return leg to lose 19 – 13 overall.
Freddie Patterson’s Robert’s Cup team have it all to do to retain that trophy after going down 9.5–2.5 to Castlehume on Sunday whilst Chipper McDermott’s Phair Cup team suffered a 13—3 defeat away to Killymoon to lose that final by 20—12 overall.
It was better news on the junior side with the Junior Donegal League team winning the first leg of their semi final with Letterkenny 2—1. The second leg will be played next Saturday.
Upcoming Events – This weekend sees the Daly’s Topaz Open on Saturday whilst Sunday is the date for the second annual Brian Patton Memorial Open in aid of McMillan Cancer. There are still some times available for the competition and commemorative T-Shirts are available by pre-order through Strabane Golf Club (Tel: 71382271).
The Ladies Past Captains competition will be held on Friday 2nd September and the JD Print Open on Thursday 8th.

DERRY’S JOHN WYLIE SETS THE PACE AT STRABANE
Not that they would have known, but it was a case of playing catch up for the field in Saturday’s OYSTER’S RESTAURANT sponsored monthly medal at Strabane. Early starter, John Wylie playing of 10 set a blistering pace returning a net 65 to win on a break of tie from Club President, Pat Patton (13). John’s win sees him join the growing number of single figure handicappers at Strabane with his new handicap of 8.
Also pipped at the post after returning the third net 65 of the day was third placed Terry Doherty playing of 12, with Sean Devine (23) and Micky Neeson (9) taking the 4th and 5th spots. Jordan Arthur (7) and Patrick McCrossan (10) continued the low handicappers’ domination of the prizes by taking the First and Second Nines respectively.
Last week’s winner, Patrick Kennedy (1), again returned an incredible one under score to take the latest in his long run of gross prizes.
NORTHERN CONFECTIONARY
Thursday’s large turnout for the Northern Confectionary competition was won by 17 handicapper Dermot Cairns with an excellent 42 points. James Harron Jnr, playing of 8 took second place with 40 points from third placed Ronnie Willie (12) with 39 points.
