Club Notes – 31st October 2017

Thirty-five teams lined up on Saturday in an end of season fundraising day for Caoimhe Harkin, with a most enjoyable day had by all playing in a team scramble format. Thankfully the weather was reasonable allowing the day to proceed with no hitches which was just reward for the tremendous efforts put in by the organising committee headed by Billy Doherty, many thanks go to the multitude of tee sponsors on the day, at least four at every hole on the course and to so many of the businesses near and far who made great contributions towards the amazing prizes that were up for grabs on the day.
The winners of the event were actually in the very first four-ball on the course just after 8am in the morning, others got extremely close but their total was never bettered, the winners were Marty Houston, Peter O’Connell, Dan Downey and Jonathan McGonagle who all left with new M2 Taylor-made drivers for their efforts! Their round started off very ordinarily for this particular format, opening with four straight pars but a fantastic run from the 5th hole where they recorded an Eagle 3, saw them birdie the following 5 holes and despite a bogey at the 17th hole they added a birdie 3 at the last hole to post an eyecatching 54.5. The unlucky runners up just one tenth of a shot behind on 54.6 were Fred McGavigan, Stephen Donaghey, Liam Callaghan and Kevin Neeson, this team had a remarkable start to their round managing to record birdie at the first seven holes! Third place went to Senan Roarty, Damian Roarty, Adrian McLaughlin and Shaun McGonagle with another great score of 55.4. The leading ladies team were Anne Sharkey, Donna Doherty, Adeline Gibson and Dympna Doherty, the prize for nearest the pin went to Ronnie Wiley with the longest drive going to Martin McDermott. Again many thanks to the members and visitors who gave great support to the competition the final total raised will be announced as soon as possible.

Thursday Club.
With better weather the sixth week of the Thursday club had its best entry to date with 58 players taking out cards, the winner in an extremely close finish was Joe Doherty with 34pts for the 15 holes in play, the runner up was Jimmy Henderson also with 34pts with Brian Brolly third again with 34pts, Paul McGill was this week’s gross winner.

Monday Club
This week’s Monday club saw 12 teams going to post, the winners were Dermott Corry, John McCallion, John White and Oliver McNally with 85.25 Nett, the runners up were Vincent Bradley, Patsy Wilson, Eric Reid and Seamus McPhilemy with 84.25 nett.

The three remaining players in “Last man standing” all progressed to week nine after they all selected Liverpool last weekend, this week’s fixtures would appear difficult to predict and we could well have a £1000 winner very soon!

This weeks’ £50 bar credit draw winner was Margaret Wolfe.

The Winter mats have now been introduced to save the course from any further damage after the recent inclement spell, all member and visitors must use them as directed with no exceptions.

Club Notes – 24th October 2017

Stephen Donaghey (9) scooped the Golfer of the Year title on Saturday with a sixth place finish in the Kennedy Independent Financial Advice stableford event, the final qualifying competition of the season. Going into Saturday’s final day the overwhelming favourite was scratch golfer Conal Cooke who has had a remarkable season himself, but he came to grief when losing a ball at the par 4 – 15th hole, when there looked to be no danger from the tee, a poor finish by his standards subsequently saw him finish outside the points whereas Donaghey had a splendid finish covering the last six holes in level par to record a vital 15 Golfer of the Year points to win overall by just a single point having trailed by fourteen at the start of the day, many congratulations to Stephen for hanging in there to be still in a position to muster a challenge after Conal’s remarkable recent run of form.
In the competition itself, our Junior Captain, Patrick McGranaghan, continued to write headlines getting it round on the day in 67 gross which equated to 41 stableford points, Patrick only achieved single figures at the end of last year and his improvement has been remarkable thus far, and this great win was very deserving after a great golfing season. The runner up was Martin Rouse (10) with an excellent 40pts his best total for some time, third went to the consistent Paul McNally (14) with 39pts, with Vincent Bradley (17) continuing his recent revival in fourth place also with 39pts, Stephen Donaghey’s 38pts was good enough to take the final nett prize. Barry Patterson (6) is another player who’s recent form has caught the eye and he took Saturday’s gross prize with an excellent three over par 33 gross points, Johnny McGonagle (22) lifted the first nine prize with Shaun McGonagle (13) winning the back nine.

Thursday Club week 5
Last Thursday’s winner in the Thursday club was Foncie McNally (16) with a solid 34pts on a difficult day for golf, the runner up was Ronnie Wiley (12) with 32pts with Dr Ciaran Kelly (11) in third with 31 pts. Keith Patterson (7) was the gross winner, the early pacesetter in the Golfer of the Year stakes is Liam Patton with several players tied on a couple of two’s in the race to be “King of the Two’s”.
A note for the diaries this year’s final day will be played at Dunfanaghy Golf Club on the 19th April 2018

Club Notes – 17th October 2017

A superb round on Saturday at Strabane saw Nigel Houston (11) produce his best round in many years to dominate the competition in The Label Men’s Fashions stableford event, the winner got to the turn with 22pts on his card which was only two over par despite a double bogey at the 3rd hole, birdies followed at the 12th & 13th holes and despite dropping three late shots his total of 43 pts was never likely to be bettered! Closest to the winner came Gerard Stewart (19) fresh from his win at the Captain’s outing he kept his great form going with a solid 40pts despite two blank holes and two double bogeys on his card! Third place went to the very steady Paul McNally (15) with 39pts with Seamus Flannagan (26) in fourth spot with 38pts, Mark Neeley (12) took the final nett prize with 38pts, the gross once again went to Conal Cooke (scr) this time with 35 pts, the over 60’s prize was claimed by Enda McDonnell (22) with 36 pts, the nines were won by Jimmy Patton and Peter Donaghey, many thanks to Stephen and Gary for their sponsorship of this event.

Club Notes – 10th October 2017

Conal Cooke’s amazing golfing season continued on Saturday as he added the Valerie Manning Club Championship to his litany of wins this season with yet another sub-par round of 66 gross which included four birdies and two dropped shots.  Playing of scratch handicap, Conal not only won the club championship gross by eight shots, but would also have topped the nett section as well!  Runner up in the gross section was the very much in form Barry Patterson (7) he had led the competition for most of the day with a six over par total which indicates how difficult conditions were on the course, third gross went to Gary O’Connell (6) with 76. The eventual winner in the nett section on Saturday was David Friel (10) with 67 nett, with Jim Arbuckle (19) the runner up one shot back on 68 nett, Damian Roarty (9) was third also with 68 nett, the over 60’s winner was James Callan (12) also with 68 nett, the nines went to Seamus Flannagan (27) and to Barry Callaghan (17)

Club Notes – 3rd October 2017

There was once again a fantastic turnout for the annual Captains outing which this year was played at the picturesque Greencastle golf club, in all 135 players made the trip to the Donegal venue and were greeted with a wonderful days weather and a course to match. The only downside to the day was that our Captain Pat was unable to attend as he continues to recover from his recent illness, we wish him well and hope to have him back at the reigns soon.  The best return on the day was posted by Gerard Stewart (21) with an excellent 41 pts, the winner had got off to a fantastic start scoring 23pts over the first nine holes and held his nerve to return a further 18pts on the back nine to win by two clear points from the runner up Terry Doherty (12) who was the best of three players on 39pts, third went to Ronnie Wiley (12) with Andrew Wolfe (12) in fourth also with 39pts, Stephen Kennedy (10) took fifth with 38pts and Brian Brolly (10) sixth also with 38pts, Neil Conroy (10) was the final nett prize winner again with 38 pts, first gross went to Fred McGavigan (4) with Barry Patterson (7)  the runner up in this section, the best of the over 60’s players on the day was Liam McGinley (20) with 37pts with the nines going to Glen Roulston and to Brian Cairns. Many thanks to the staff at Greencastle Golf club for their fantastic hospitality a most enjoyable day and night was had by all!

Greg Mitchell Motors
The Greg Mitchell Motors Stableford event had been rescheduled to last Thursday with Fred McGavigan (4) the winner with 37 pts which on the day was a very good total as the course was playing it’s full length due to the underfoot conditions, the strong wind and some strange tee positions, Fred actually played in the worst of the days weather out in the last group on the course and having to contend with the strengthening gale that blew in, the runner up and long-time leader was Pat Corry (12) with 36pts with Kevin Heffernan (17) third, also with 36pts, Conor Byrne (5) took the gross prize with 30 gross points.

There was a stableford sweep competition played on Saturday for golfers who were not travelling to the Captains outing, the winner was Conor Byrne (4) with 40pts which was level par for his round, the runner up was Conal Cooke (0) who posted another under par round this time a gross 66 to give him 39pts.

Junior Captains Day
Junior Captains day was played on Sunday and unfortunately the weather had taken a turn for the worst leading to a reduced field of players. The winner in the boys section was Conor Byrne with Mark Roarty the runner up, the girl’s winner was Emer Houston, many thanks to our Junior Captain’s Patrick McGranaghan and Sarah Bradley for being great hosts on the day.

Club Matchplay
Disappointingly  only one of the club Matchplay Cup tournaments have been completed, that being the Jones Cup which was played last Sunday between Conal Cooke and Patrick McCrossan, the match lived up to its billing as the two inform players slugged it out, there were eight birdies in the game but the turning point that probably swung the match in Cooke’s favour came at the 14th hole where McCrossan double bogeyed with a shot at the hole to lose it, however he did finish strongly to win the final two holes to take the match to the 19th where Cooke eventually won with a par 4. The other finals should all be played by next week as the presentation date is Friday 13th October, there will be no further extensions! Weather permitting the Club Championship will be played this coming Saturday 7th October.

The entry sheet for the Leo Kavanagh Memorial Winter Cup has been posted on the noticeboard it is set to get underway on Sunday 15th October.

In last man standing there were a further eight fatalities this week leaving only 18 players in the hunt for the £1000 prize.

he £50 bar credit winner this week was Liam McDevitt.

The club are currently taking bookings for Christmas parties which are booking well, one fantastic night of interest is Saturday 16th December where the very popular “David James” with support from “Klassix disco” will be providing the entertainment, the full price for the night is £22.50 per person which includes a full four course Christmas fayre dinner, contact Tommy for reservations.

Tuesday 10th October – Ladies closing day scramble

Club Notes – 26th September 2017

The recent spell of very wet weather locally has played havoc with the end of season competition schedule, with three recent Saturday events now having to be postponed, last Saturdays Club Championship became the latest competition not to be played as the holes along the river were not in a condition where they could be played without causing major damage to the fairways on that stretch of the course. Sundays competition The Mourne river Search & Rescue stableford however did get the go ahead and was played over a reduced 15 holes with the 9th 10th & 11th again being omitted. The winner with a tidy 35 pts was Eddie Finlay (14) with junior Captain Patrick McGranaghan (4) the runner up with 33pts, third went to Brian Kelly (18) with 32pts whilst Barry Patterson picked up the gross prize with 26 gross points.
In place of the club Championship on Saturday a 12 holes sweep competition was held with Brian Forrester (16) continuing his excellent late season surge to take first place with 28 pts, Jimmy Callan(12) was next with 27 pts with Charlie Patton (16) in third with 26 pts, Patrick Kennedy (2) was the gross winner on this occasion with 21 pts.

Thursday Club
The Thursday club has got underway for the Autumn & Winter seasons with a decent entry so far, the weather has also been a factor in the first two weeks with both weeks being reduced to 12 holes also. The Monday Club is now in to it’s third week. 15 holes were possible this week with Barry Patterson, Dermott Corry, John McMenamin and Johnathan McGillion this week’s winners with 88.5 pts.

Best wishes are sent to our Captain Pat McAneny has he continues to recover from serious illness we all wish him a speedy recovery. The clubs Last Man Standing after only three weeks is rapidly getting down to the business side of things with 492 players eliminated after the first three weeks, only one more went out last weekend leaving a total of only 26 players still in contention for the £1000 prize.

Last weekend’s £50 bar credit draw went to Mark Gillespie.

The entry sheet and format for this year’s Winter cup will be posted on the club noticeboard after this weekend.

Club Notes – 12th September 2017

Conal Cooke playing of one handicap again took the honours at Strabane, on Saturday past, in the Medicare sponsored event with yet another superb under par round of 66 gross which transferred to a winning 40 pts bringing Conal to a new scratch handicap! One over par after three holes Cooke then added 3 birdies in a row to get his round in great shape, only one more bogey was to follow, that at the par four 11th hole but birdies at the 10th & 15th holes more than made up for any slips and he ran out the winner by a single point from a host of players on 39 pts, the very much back in form Vincent Bradley (17) who, fresh from his “Pavarotti tour” win, took the runners up spot, he has featured frequently on the scoreboard in recent weeks, third place went to Ryan McGowan (5) with a solid two over par round, Adrian McDermott (18) took fourth again with 39 pts, Stephen McCay (5) was the final nett prize winner with 38 pts, the gross went to Fred McGavigan (4) with an excellent one over par round, the over 60’s prize winner was Francie Devine (11) with 38 pts, Barry Callaghan (17) was the winner of the front nine with 22 pts with Mark McCrea (8) winning the back nine with a similar score.

Teams News
Pat Corry’s JB.Carr team lost out on Saturday in Woodenbridge in the All Ireland semi-final against Portumna G.C. by the narrowest of margins eventually going down by three matches to two, after Garvin Godfrey and Declan McDonnell lost at the 19th hole.  The Strabane pairing had fought back from four down to take the game to extra holes despite conceding four shots to their Co. Galway opponents. Strabane eventually finished in third place when they defeated Fermoy Co.Cork 4-1 in Sundays third/fourth place play-off, the eventual winners were Portumna G.C who beat the K.Club 4-1 in the final, to make it a very successful day indeed for Galway teams. Disappointment yes, but still a very successful campaign for Pat’s side putting Strabane Golf club firmly on the map and with another Ulster title in the bag!

Congratulations to Frankie Connolly and his Conway Cup team who took the honours in Sundays Conway Cup final against Aughnacloy golf club turning around a 11.5-4.5 deficit from the first leg to win the home leg in dramatic fashion and an overall win of 19-13.

Not so good news for Shane McLaughlin and his Phair Cup team in their final as they were comprehensively beaten at home by Aughnacloy by a 11.5-4.5 margin and will need something very special to turn the match around in their favour.

Club Notes – 29th August 2017

The seventh annual Brian Patton Memorial Day went ahead at Strabane on Sunday despite the continued closure of the “river holes” due to the severe on course flooding along that stretch of the river Mourne last Tuesday evening. The competition was reduced to 15 holes, many thanks to our green-staff who worked tirelessly to get the course playable at all!  As always for this event there was an excellent entry with many visitors coming to play in honour of possibly Strabane’s greatest ever golfer the legendary Brian Patton. It was fitting that another Brian led the field home on Sunday, Brian Forrester (16) took the perpetual trophy with an excellent total of 36 pts which was good enough on the day by two points from the runner up Johnny McGillion (20) who has been in fantastic form lately in his first full season of golf, third went to Paul McNally (15) another player with 34 pts, Mark Sharkey (18) took fourth also with 34 pts, Frankie Connolly (22) took the final nett prize with 33 pts, first gross went to Paul McGill with 2nd gross going to Patrick McCrossan, the nines prizes went to Seamus Flannagan and Stephen Dalzell with Kevin McGinley taking the guest prize with 33 pts.
In the ladies section the winner from Faughan Vallet G.C. was L. Smallwoods with Margaret Wolfe the runner up and Kathleen Hoynes in third place.Special thanks to John Cleghorn who once again organised so many players from Faughan Valley G.C. to play, to the Patton family for the wonderful prizes, the many sponsors that donated raffle prizes and not forgetting Brian Cairns for his efforts organising this year’s commemorative polo shirts which added so much to a great day and evening.

Flood water around the 10th fairway

Saturday’s planned event the Valerie Manning Club Championship had to be postponed with the 9th & 10th holes out of action and a 15 holes sweep was played in its place, the winner was Brian O’Kane (20) with 36 pts, one clear of Neil Alcock (16) in second place with Noel O’Kane (27) in third with 33 pts, Fred McGavigan (4) picked up the gross prize, the vouchers for this competition can be collected at the bar. The Club Championship will hopefully be played on Saturday 23rd September.

Club Notes – 22nd August 2017

Martin Finlay led a field of over two hundred golfers home on Saturday at Strabane on the occasion of Mr Stewart McFeeters Presidents Day. Martin got to the turn with 19 pts on his card and played very steady over his closing holes despite a double bogey 5 at the 16th hole to accumulate a further 21pts and a winning total of 40pts, which was good enough on the day from runner up KJ Patterson (7), Ryan McGowan (5) took third place with a tidy two over par round of 38pts, just getting the better of fourth placed Denis Porter (12) on a break of tie, the final nett prize went to Nigel Houston (11) with 37 pts also on break of tie. Saturday’s gross prize winner was Aidan Boyle (5) who is always a player for the big occasion, his three over par total was good enough on the day giving him 33 gross pts. Thursday Singles Stableford
Stephen McCay (6) hit a great piece of late season form to take last Thursday’s stableford competition with an excellent 42pts, it probably seemed like an average day getting to the turn with 18pts but an amazing run of birdies at the 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th & 16th holes set him up for a great win and a superb back nine of 24pts.  Gerard Bradley (17) kept his great season going to take the runners up spot with 40pts with Adrian McLaughlin (12) in third place with 39pts, Conal Cooke (1) was the gross winner with yet another under par round of 37 gross pts. The team travelled to their Ulster Final second leg at Dunmurray G.C. last Wednesday with a healthy 5-0 first leg advantage, the game however was still very close with the Belfast team winning the first three matches, however the later games rallied well with both the pairings of Liam Curry & Maurice McGettigan and Francie Devine & Oliver McNally winning their ties on the final green to take Strabane through.

Club News – 15th August 2017

Conal Cooke (1) made the local golfing headlines last week with a gross 64 and an “Albatross” to finish as the competition runner up, this week with a gross 65 he actually went one better surviving a three way break of tie to take first place in the JC.Barbers stableford competition with 41pts. It is extremely unusual to see a  winner of such a low handicap, as local scratch golfer Enda Kennedy will testify, really there is no room for any errors whatsoever and everything must go for you on the day, even to have a chance with so many shots to concede to other players, so to achieve this of Conal Cooke’s handicap is indeed a rare occurrence.
Conal got to the turn in level par after setting out with seven straight pars before a birdie two and a bogey five completed his outward nine, further birdies followed at the 10th, 12th & 15th holes to amass 21pts on the inward nine which was just enough to secure the win. The runner up on the day was the ever improving Rodney Dolan (20) who had led for most of the day until the winner finished late in the evening, the third of the trio of players with 41pts was Francis Canning (18) Billy Doherty (15) took fourth place with 40pts with Ciaran Murphy (8) taking the final nett prize with 39 pts.  The gross award went to Nicky Patton with 32 gross pts, Terry Doherty (12) took the over 60’s prize for the second consecutive week, Brian O’Kane (21) was the front nine winner with 23pts, with Paul McLaughlin (19) the back nine winner with 21 pts. Many thank’s to the sponsor of the event Johnny McGillion a new sponsor to the club who put up a wonderful array of prizes for the competition.

Club Notes – 8th August 2017

Sammy Devenney’s (19) fine season of golf continued on Saturday in the Pat O’Neill’s Scaffolding stableford competition with a fantastic total of 44pts to take the win.  Sammy started this year at (21) but has obviously found retirement very much to his liking as he has tumbled to an excellent new mark of (16).  The key on Saturday was just very steady golf over his entire round putting together matching nines of 22pts.The unlucky runner up on the day was Conal Cooke (2) with a truly remarkable round of golf of five under par gross 64 which equated to 43pts, the outstanding feature of which was an Albatross at the par five 10th hole, where he holed his three wood second shot, the first time this has been achieved at Strabane playing a par five hole! Conal went on to add further birdies at the 12th hole & 14th hole to register only 30 shots for his inward nine and an unconfirmed new course record! Third on the day went to Patsy Logue(24) with 41 pts, his best round to date, Patsy unfortunately incurred a two shot penalty for teeing off from the wrong marker at the 4th hole, so did remarkably well to keep his round going! Alan McGinley (16) is a relatively new young player to the game and he is making great strides forward, his 40pts built on a great second nine of 22pts gave him fourth place.  Long hitter Gary O’Connell (7) is another having a great season and he took the final nett prize with 40pts. The gross on the day went to sponsor’s guest Enda Kennedy (0) with a one over par total of 35 pts, the over 60’s prize went to Gerry Quinn (19) with 40pts with the nines going to Jimmy Callan (12) with 22pts for the front nine and to Charlie Patton (16) with 21 pts for the back nine.

Liam Curry rolled back the years at Strabane on Saturday in the Ballycolman Vivo stroke competition, shooting an amazing 62 nett to spread eagle the challenging field in extremely tough conditions. William Potts (27) was Saturdays winner of the Irish Road Motors Accident and Repair Centre stableford with an excellent return of 43pts, a fine opening nine of 22pts being undone somewhat with no further addition at the par 5 10th hole, but William rallied well to score a further 21pts over the last 8 holes to give him a one point win from the unlucky runner up Ciaran Doherty (9) who was just three over par for his round, a blank hole at the par 3 sixteenth hole possibly doing the damage although he was one of the very few to record a birdie on the final hole with the pin in a treacherous position. Third place went to Paul Houston (28) one of the early morning starters also with 42pts, fourth went to Brian Kelly (19) who has maintained his great run, with Charlie Patton (17) taking the final nett prize with 41 pts.  Caolan Crawford (5) took yet another gross prize with an excellent level par round which consisted of 4 birdies, 4 bogeys and 10 pars!  Jim Potts (18) was the over 60’s winner with 39pts with the nines going to Johnny McGonagle and to Stephen Conroy.

Annette Patton (31) was the very popular winner of Mrs Patricia Kelly’s Lady Captains prize at Strabane on Saturday with an excellent score of 68 nett, everything was set up perfect for the big day the only disappointing factor was the weather as it remained breezy, and somewhat wet, for most of the day and umbrellas were up for most of the afternoon. Annette played very steady throughout her round and kept it going right to the finish to eventually win by a clear margin of three shots from the runner up Mary Gallagher (29), who in her own words has hit somewhat of a purple patch off late and has featured in most competition presentations throughout the past month.  The reception Mary received for her efforts on the day spoke highly of the regard in which this “super –senior” is held by her fellow lady golfers at the club. Club Notes – 4th July 2017

The winner of Saturday’s Devine Sand & Gravel stableford competition was Gary King who was out in the very first four-ball of the day, it surely looked like just one of those ordinary days when he reached the turn with 16 points on his card, but two successive birdies to begin the back nine moved him into contention and with only one poor hole at the 17th hole, Gary managed to accumulate 40 pts, a total that wasn’t bettered for the remainder of the day. The runner up was also playing in the same four-ball Ciaran Patton (20) has had a lean time on the course of late and it’s good to see him back in the winners enclosure, his 39 pts good enough on break of tie from two similar scores, that of Hugo McCusker (12) who was third and James Harron (10) who finished fourth, James Bradley (18) took the final nett prize with 38 pts, the gross prize winner was Patrick McCrossan (6) with 32 gross points, this week’s over 60’s winner was Paddy Doyle (17) with 36 pts, Gerry Glover (16) won the first nine with Brian O’Kane (21) the back nine.

Club Notes – 26th June 2017

Playing in the very last three-ball on the course Frankie Connolly (26) added Mr Pat McAneny’s Captains prize to his list of big wins on Saturday past, the second time in three years Frankie has won the clubs most coveted title. It’s indeed true to say that Frankie’s handicap has soared in recent years and of twenty-six it’s also fair to say he was one of the favourites to win on the day and he duly delivered with an eye-catching return of 58 nett to get home by a massive five strokes and set an all time low score for Captains day at the club. Conditions were far from easy on a very blustery but dry day making the winning mark all the more remarkable, Frankie reached the turn in nine over par and managed to get home dropping only another six shots to blow the challenging field away! The unlucky runner up was Brian Kelly (20), he had led from early morning with a brilliant 63 nett and could have been excused for beginning to prepare his winners speech, third on the day was Stephen Acheson (15) with 65 nett with John McCallion (16) a further two strokes back with 67 nett in fourth, Martin McCallion (20) took the final nett prize with the same score of 67 nett. The gross went to last year’s overall winner Cathal Patton (5) who is always the man for the big occasion, his gross score of 74 again a sign of how difficult conditions were. The category winners were Kevin Neeson (11) with 68 nett in category one, Paul O’Neill (14) with 68 nett in category two and Eamonn Duffy (28) also with 68 nett in category three. The Captain had many members playing in the guests section, Martin McCallion took the sweep leaving Declan Devine as the Captains guest winner with 68 nett, with Liam McGinley (20) 70 nett and Dr Ciaran Kelly 72 nett taking the other prizes. The Captain thanked everyone who had contributed to his big day and had helped in anyway, with special thanks to the greenkeepers who presented the course in magnificent condition.  He went on to thank everyone who has worked so hard in his tenure to date making the club the great success, it undoubtedly is, Pat thanked all his friends family and guests for being there to make his big day so memorable.

It hasn’t been a good week for our G.U.I. teams who were in action this week. Our Jimmy Bruen team lost on Sunday to Malone G.C at Moyola by three matches to two, losing two matches at the 19th hole, Strabane had looked strong favourites to go through with a few holes to go and it was more a case of seizing a loss from the jaws of victory!
Our Junior Cup team have also gone out losing to Portsalon at Ballybofey on Monday night also by three matches to two, losing the final game, the decider at the 18th hole. No luck either for our Barton Shield team who gave a great account of themselves against a strong Rosapenna team, after finishing level we lost out in a tie hole once again.
In Tyrone and Fermanagh competition Gerard Walsh’s Lawson Cup team hold an 11-5 first leg lead over Black Lion G.C with the away leg still to come, Terry Doherty’s O’Hare Cup team have gone out at the first hurdle to Newtownstewart, better news for Frankie Connolly’s Conway Cup team who have advanced after beating Omagh G.C. 22-10 overall.

Club Notes – 13th June 2017

Enda Kennedy was Sundays winner in the Frylite Senior Scratch Cup after a dramatic three way play-off over three holes, he finished level on 148 with Strabane’s Patrick McGranaghan and Conal Cooke, all three players managed par 4’s at the first play-off hole but a brilliant chip at the 2nd from the Rosapenna representative saw him hole out for a birdie two to take the advantage from Cooke up the 18th hole the third in the playoff by a shot with young Patrick two in arrears having bogeyed the second hole. Enda had a chance to wrap it up on the green when he played in to 15 feet but missed the putt on the right leaving Conal a chance to convert from 8 feet uphill but the Strabane player left it agonisingly short to give Enda another Strabane Scratch Cup title, his first in recent years since he won the inaugural title in 1994 and his 22nd Scratch cup in total, 11 of these in this event.

Special mention to Patrick who only a year ago wasn’t even in single figures and here he was mixing it up with the best players about and what an account he gave of himself, at only 18 years old he has a great future in the game and came so close to winning the title.  Conal will look back at a short putt missed at his 35th hole running up an uncharacteristic double bogey six, which likely cost him the win. In total 70 players played in the 36 holes competition with visitors from far and wide, many thanks once again to the sponsor Mr Eamon McCay, Managing Director at Frylite Ireland for once again sponsoring the event.

Declan Devine Frozen Foods
Martin McGeehan (17) continued his run of good form in Saturday’s competition the Declan Devine’s Frozen Foods stableford with a good total of 41pts on a difficult day for golf, the runner up was Club Secretary Senan Roarty with 39pts with Ciaran Murphy in third with the same total, Eddie O’Kane (28) took fourth place with 38pts and Jimmy Patton (13) fifth also with 38pts. The gross prize winner was Conor Meehan (6) with 29 gross points, the nines went to Paul Bogle (10) and to Kevin Gallagher (16) who took the back nine.

Northern Confectionary
Andy Wolfe (12) was Thursday’s winner in the Northern Confectionery Stableford with an excellent 43pts, Dr Ciaran Kelly (12) was the unlucky runner up with 41pts ,an eye-catching level par front nine of 24pts slipped a little on the inward nine, third went to Eoin O’Neill (5) with 39pts, the gross went to Conal Cooke (3).

Conditions were very tough for last Tuesday’s ladies competition the Eileen Devine Stroke, the winner with 71 nett was Geraldine Masterson (33), the category winners were Lorna Duffy with 76 nett and Rosemary Wilson with 72 nett.

Well done to the Mixed Foursomes team who have advanced to the next stage of the matchplay after defeating close neighbours Newtownstewart last Wednesday at Omagh golf club. The opening nine favoured the Baronscourt team with some excellent golf played in all of the ties, Strabane got their game together on the back nine to take the first three matches and were all square in the final two on the course when play was called in.

In other team news Terry Doherty’s O’Hare Cup team have it all to do in Friday’s return leg with Newtownstewart losing out 9.5-6.5 in Mondays home leg. Better news of Patrick McCrossan’s Roberts Cup team who won 10 of the 12 points on offer on the same night in their tie at Newtownstewart.

Low handicap golfers were to the fore on Saturday past in the Foothills Bar & Restaurant stableford competition with scoring noticeably low despite decent playing conditions throughout the day. The winning score of 37pts was recorded by Mark McColgan playing off five handicap winning on a triple break of tie. Mark looked to be having one of those days when he reached the turn with only 15 points on his card but turned on the style over the inward nine with four birdies including one at the 18th hole which was a real rarity on the day with the pin in an almost impossible position on the lightning fast green, this added up to 22pts, a remarkable finish that catapulted him to the leader-board summit! The runner up on the day was another five handicap player Cathal Patton, he finished with a pair of Bogey fives which ultimately cost him the win, in third was Stephen Donaghey (10) one of many who double bogeyed the final hole. Kieran McAleer (23) was the only high handicap player to feature in the main prizes finishing in fourth place with 36pts with Patrick McCrossan (5) in fifth also with 36pts.  The gross went to Aidan Boyle (5) with 31 gross points. Conditions were particularly tough last Thursday for the Charlies Bar stableford but the rain had relented somewhat for play to continue in the late afternoon. The winner was Competition Secretary Patrick McCrossan (6)who has been in the form of his life lately and it was no surprise to see him top the board in this one with a fine level par round that converted to 42 pts, a fine birdie three at the 17th hole the highlight adding four pts to his total, the runner up was Keith Patterson (7) with 41pts despite two blank holes on his first nine, new club Vice-Captain Frankie Houston (13) took third spot also with 41pts, with Conal Cooke getting it round in one under par to take the gross prize with 39pts.

Note there is no mixed foursomes competition this Wednesday 7th June as the Mixed foursomes are playing their match against Newtownstewart at Omagh on the same evening.

Playing in the first fourball on the course on Saturday morning Mark McCrea (8) posted the winning score of nett 64 in the Golf Club Shop Stroke event, his total was equalled but not bettered throughout the day, Mark’s score was probably all the more remarkable as he played in the days worse conditions, with early morning rain prevailing for the entirety of his round.  Mark reached the turn in a decent total of four over par but turned it on in the back nine recording birdies at the 10th & 13th holes whilst conceding only one shot to par at the 17th for a one under par back nine total. Saturday’s unlucky runner up was John McMenamin (17) another player who has improved his game rapidly this season, with Patrick Kennedy (3)in third place with an excellent return of one under par on the day that converted to 65 nett, fourth went to another in form player Martin McGeehan (19) with 66 nett with Hugh McGinley (26) taking his first nett prize in fifth place also with 66 net. Saturday’s gross prize winner was Cathal Patton (6) with 73 gross. Monday Stableford
With a major deterioration in the weather there was a mediocre entry for Mondays Stableford event, but it went the way off Mark Gillespie once again, now playing of his new handicap of 12 his 37 pts was good enough by two from his playing partner Nicky Wolfe (9).

Commiserations to Paddy O’Kane and his Pierce Purcell team who narrowly failed to qualify for the matchplay stages on Sunday beaten on countback for fourth place by the host club Killymoon on Sunday at the Co.Tyrone venue. Club Notes – 9th May 2017

Paul McGill (6) kept his good Winter form going in brilliant conditions to take the Sports Centre sponsored competition on Saturday past with 40pts, one of three players on the same total.  Runner up Aidan Boyle, also playing of six, had the same back nine total as the winner but the competition was decided on a break of tie on the last three holes, a stand out birdie 3 at the par 4- 17th hole just getting the winner the verdict in an extremely close call. Third went to the very much in form Liam Patton (15) who had got to the turn with 23 pts and he too birdied the 17th hole whilst compiling his 40pts.  Fourth place went to Gerard Bradley (18) another player producing good scores, he had 38 pts with the final nett prize going to David Irvine (10) also with 38 pts.  The gross winner was Patrick McCrossan (6) with 30 gross pts with the nines being claimed by Declan McDonnell (10) with 20 pts for the front nine and to Stephen Alexander (19) with 20pts for the back nine, John Duddy (14) took the over 60’s prize with 36pts.

Dan Downey (16) playing the very last fourball on the course took the first Thursday stableford competition with an excellent total of 42 pts, veteran Jimmy Coyle at 87 years of age, had led the way for most of the day with 39pts, taking into consideration this event was played from the back white markers Jimmy’s total was a remarkable one indeed an ageless competitor who always gives it his all in any conditions, Well done Jimmy!  Third place on the day went to another veteran Jim Malcolm (18) with a very tidy 38 pts, Connor Meehan took the gross prize with 30 gross pts.

Ladies open teams.
The winners of the Strabane Electrics Open teams were Dympna Doherty, Imelda Doherty and Carole McFeeters, the runners up were Jennifer Rouse, Catherine Connolly and Marion O’Reilly, further congratulations to Marion who recorded a hole in one at the 12th hole, third place went to Geraldine McCrory, Catherine Neeson and Heather Mitchell.

Pride of place in team events goes to Aidan Boyle and his Jimmy Bruen side who led the qualifyers home at Ballycastle on Sunday, topping the leader board by an incredible 9 shots despite having to endure thick coastal fog for much of the duration of their round, the stand out performance on the day went to Ryan McGowan and his partner Paul Bogle who got it round in three over par despite dropping three late shots, Strabane will now meet Faughan Valley back at Ballycastle in the next couple of weeks.

Well done also to Eddie McHugh and his All Ireland Fourball side who have advanced to the next round of that competition with a comfortable overall win over Banbridge.

The Last Man Standing competition still goes on with none of the four remaining players picking a winning side last weekend, all four are readmitted to battle on for the £1000 prize. Club Notes – 4th April 2017

Gerard Bradley playing of 19 was the winner of the new seasons first sponsored competition the Caffe Fresco stableford with a good total of 39 pts, an excellent score on a very difficult day for golf with the fairways very wet, with very little run after the past weeks heavy rain coupled with the breezy conditions that prevailed throughout the day.  Gerard played very steady to reach the turn with 20 pts and added a further 19 on the more difficult back nine including a very important par putt at the last, the runner up was John Langan (13) who was in great shape playing the 18th but encountered a couple of trees on his way to record a six which cost him the win beaten on break of tie, third place one point back came Declan Doherty (10) with 38 pts, a fine birdie three at the last elevating him well up the leaderboard with the same total as early morning starter Mark McCrea (8) and Chris McDermott (13) who finished fourth and fifth respectively. A pointer to the conditions on the day can be made in the gross section which was won by Conal Cooke (2) who signed for 31 gross pts which was a massive eleven shots less than his winning total the previous week, but still was good enough this week in the gross section. The nines went to Nigel Houston (11) with 22 pts for the front nine and to Charlie Patton (17) with the same total on the back nine. The C.S.S. for this event was 71 or 34 pts!

Thursday Club week 9
Last week’s Thursday club winner was Pat O’Neill (16) with 40pts, the runner up was Neil Conroy (11) beaten only on break of tie with Shane McLaughlin (9) third on 38 pts, the gross winner was Freddie Patterson. Martin Finlay despite not playing last week retains his lead in the Golfer of the Year chase on 96 pts but only by six points now from Jim Harley with Neil Conroy in third with 87 pts. Only three weeks remain with the final day at Murvagh G.C. on Thursday 27th April, see Tommy Forbes to confirm your spot on the timesheet.

Monday Club
With the continuing poor weather only five teams braved the elements last Monday , the winners were Ronnie Wiley, Liam Patton, Foncie McNally and John McMenamin with 85.25 Nett, the runners up were Chris McDermott, Robert Bell and Oliver McNally with 81.5 Nett. The final day of this years event is confirmed as Monday 24th April.

There were many fallers from the 197 left in at the weekend in the Last Man Standing competition with Man United and Chelsea being the downfall of so many and Southampton chipping in for good measure too! The field is now whittled down to 71 players for this week’s midweek games, someone is getting closer to the £1000 prize!

This week’s £50 bar credit winner was Martin McGeehan. Club Captain Pat McAneny was the winner of this week shop bonus ball winning a new Waterproof Golf suit!
