Club Notes – 15th November 2016

The winter mats will be in use on the course on both fairways and semi-roughs from Thursday 17th November, for all competitions, until further notice.  However, play will continue to proceed from the summer yellow tees and summer cards will still be used for a while yet as the yellow tees were only moderately used this year greens convenor Ben Corry stated.

On the course Saturday’s competitions have now been reduced to 15 holes, last Saturday’s winner was Oliver McNally (19) with 37pts, just ahead of runner up Liam Callaghan (12) with 36 pts, Chris McDermott (13) finished in third place with the gross prize going to Paul McGill (6) with 26 gross pts.
Congratulations to Paul who had a hole in one at the second hole in the Saturday 15 holes competition on Sat 22nd October, there was also another hole in one recorded on the same day by Sean Elliot at the 12th hole.

The winner of the 15 holes event on Saturday 5th November was Stephen Donaghey (11) with 35 pts, relegating James Patton (12) to the runners up spot on break of tie, third was Martin Finlay (20) with 34 pts, the gross winner on this occasion was Patrick Kennedy (2) with 28 gross pts.

The final Saturday qualifier was played on Saturday 29th October and saw a great win for Cathal Patton (6) who got it round in a fine level par score giving him 42 pts, the runner up was Paul Kavanagh (19) a point behind with 41pts with Liam Callaghan (13) in third with 40pts, the gross winner was again Patrick Kennedy.

Thursday Club
The Thursday club has very quickly moved on to week 10, the most recent winner was Shane McLaughlin (9) with 36 pts over the 15 holes in play, the runner up was Jim Harley (18) with 33 pts with Chris McDermott (13) in third with 33 pts nett.
The previous weeks winner was Stewart McFeeters (17) with 35 pts with Liam Patton (15) the runner up with 34.5 nett, third went to Neil Conroy (11) with 34 pts. In the race to be crowned Golfer of the Year for the first term Oliver McNally leads the way with 132 pts, from Liam Patton on 114pts, with Neil Conroy in third at present with 110 pts.
In the “King of the two’s” section last year’s winner Freddie Patterson has hit the front scoring two deuces in each of his past two weeks play, he leads on a total of six from both Shane McLaughlin and Paul McGill on five.
This week’s competition will again be played over 15 holes with the “Loop” omitted.

Monday Club
The Monday Team’s event continues to attract a very good weekly entry

The latest winners were club President Jim Arbuckle, Pascal McGillion, Martin Finlay and Patsy Wilson with 92 pts nett, the runners up were Kevin Gallagher, Frank McKay, Danny McGinley and Gabriel Gordon with 89.25 Nett.
The date for the Christmas Monday Club is set for Monday 19th December with the traditional meal and music to follow.

Sperrin Springs Winter Cup
This coming Sunday will be the last qualifying week of the matchplay event, section one is the closest to call of the three sections with no less than five pairs still in with a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals. Stephen Conroy and Mark Quinn currently lead the way on 14.5 pts with four further pairings awaiting any slip up’s they are all on 12 pts.
In Section 2, Anthony Brennan and Frankie Houston will wrap up the section if the score a half point in their last tie as they lead on 18.5 pts, even if they score zero they will still reach the semi-finals as the highest scoring runners up, Paul Kavanagh and Ciaran Murphy are in second place and if they win on Sunday they too will guarantee a semi-final berth. In section three Paul O’Neill and Brendan O’Neill ensured their place in the next stage on Sunday past having moved on to 18.5 pts. There will be an open draw when all four pairs have been identified, the final two weeks for the remaining pairs will be played as a better ball aggregate.

Congratulations to Martin “Pop” McGeehan who secured the £1000 Last Man Standing prize to himself selecting Sunderland to win in the final week, the winning promotor was Damian McGranaghan.
Look out for another game of Last Man Standing in early January.

Last week’s £50 bar credit draw winner was Claire Keys.

Tickets are on sale in the club for our members night on Saturday 3rd December with a two course hot buffet and 70’ 80’s disco to follow, tickets are available at the office, bar, or from any team captain from 2016 and are keenly priced at £10. Members are welcome to bring their guests on the night.
