Club Notes – 18th October 2016

At the second time of asking the rescheduled Ballycolman Vivo Open, kindly sponsored by Mark McDermott, got underway.  Although at times the weather resembled the original date with the wind and rain that prevailed throughout late morning and early afternoon making life very difficult for competitiors. The winner was Paul Bogle (12) with an excellent 40pts in the conditions although he just got the better of Raymond Arnold (21) on countback, two points further back with 38 pts came Shaun McGonagle (14) with 38pts the same total as fourth placed Paul Kavanagh (19), junior member Patrick McGranaghan (10) took fifth place and the final nett prize with 37 pts, Conal Cooke (3) took the gross prize with a three over par 33 pts, with the nines going to Stephen Donaghey (10) and to Philip Miller (21) who took the back nine.

B McNamee Open
The previous week’s competition was rescheduled from April this year with many thanks to long time golf club sponsors B Mc Namee Ltd. The winner was Matt Keyes (20) who returned to a bit of form with 41 pts to win by a shot from the very much in form Dermott Corry (12), Adrian McLaughlin (12) kept his good run going taking third place also with 40 pts with Gerry Quinn (22) in fourth with 39 pts, Martin Houston (17) was in fifth place with the gross on this occasion going to Mark McColgan with 31 gross pts.

Thursday Club results
Week five of the Thursday club was won by Ronnie Wiley (12) with 36pts for the 15 holes in play, the runner up was Dr Ciaran Kelly (12) with 33.75 Nett, with Chris McDermott (13) in third with 33 pts. There were eleven two’s recorded on the day.
Last week’s Thursday club, week 6 was claimed by Pascal McGillion (24) with 36 pts over the first 16 holes, second went to Liam Patton (15) with 35 pts with Liam McGinley (21) in third with 34 pts. The best overall return of the day was made by non-Thursday member Declan Doherty who had a fine 38 pts to take that prize. Surprisingly with all the par threes in  play only four twos were carded.

Monday club
There was a delayed start due to the early morning rain for this week’s Monday club event which was eventually played over 10 holes. The winners were Hugo McCusker, Eugene Patton, Jimmy Henderson and John Shiels with 52.25 Nett, the runners up were Chris McDermott, Oliver McNally and Robert Bell with 52 Nett.

Commiserations to Freddie Patterson and his Donegal Junior Cup team who narrowly lost to Gweedore Golf Club at Rosapenna on Saturday past, having to forfeit the opening game due to illness Strabane lost out on the final Green by three matches to two overall.

In Club Matchplay tournaments there are still some matches badly overdue completition! Those that have finished saw Kevin Heffernan taking his first matchplay title defeating Gerard Stewart in the final of the Lawson Cup, Betty Kelly and Tommy Sharkey caused somewhat of an upset in defeating Debbie McDaid and Gerry Casey in the final of the Worcester Cup.
Congratulations to Fred McGavigan who as expected wrapped up another Golfer of the Year title an award richly deserved for his consistency this season.

There were five further fallers in this week’s “Last Man Standing” competition with the race for the £1000 prize getting ever closer, only 19 players now remain.

Dermott Corry was the winner of the £50 bar credit draw.

There is music in the club on Saturday night with Klassix Disco & “The Mad Arabs” all the proceeds will go to the Foyle Hospice.
On Sunday at 6pm we have X-Factor 2016 contestant Conor McGinty with his two hour show, everyone is most welcome, there is no cover charge.

Club News – 2nd October 2016

Barry Callaghan (19) totally dominated Saturdays Captains outing to Donegal Golf club with a fantastic 44 pts, which saw him the clear winner on the day by an eye-catching seven points from his nearest challenger. Barry raced to the turn in a most impressive 25pts and held his nerve well to record a further 19pts on the inward nine to easily take the win, the runner up was Nicky Patton(6) with a very steady 37 pts, with the consistent Michael Neeson (10) in third also with 37 pts, fourth went to veteran player Danny Duffy (15) another with 37 pts with Eddie Finlay (14) fifth with 36 pts.  The winner of the gross was competition secretary Patrick McCrossan (6) with 31 gross pts with Patrick Kennedy (2) the runner up in the gross category, Kevin Neeson (10) was sixth with Paul McConway (15) taking the final nett prize with 35 pts. The category prizes went to Nicky Wolfe (8), Kevin Gallagher (16) and Patsy Logue (24).  The Captain thanked all who had traveled on the day 140 had made their way to Murvagh G.C. for the day and were greeted by a course in its usual pristine condition.

Thursday Club week 4
Last week’s Thursday club winner was Martin Finlay with 34pts over the 15 holes in play and was the winner by two points from the runner up Paul McGill with 32pts the same total as third placed Dr C. Kelly, there were eight two’s recorded on the day.
Well done to Freddie Patterson’s Donegal Junior league team who have qualified for the final of that event with a great 3-2 win over Rosapenna at the Donegal venue, they now meet Gweedore Golf club in next week’s decider.
Last week’s Ladies event was the final competition of the summer programme and was won by Lorna Duffy with 30 pts, the category one winner was Mandy Coyne with 28 pts with Caren Corry winning category two with 26pts.
The Winter Cup is set to get underway this coming Sunday 9th October.
