Club Notes – 20th September 2016

MEDICARE WIN FOR MICHAEL
Michael Etherson (13) had the best return of the day in Saturday’s Medicare Open stableford with 41pts which was a great score on a day when the course was playing as long as it can with the soft conditions which prevail, the runner up was the very consistent Mark McCrea (9) with 40pts, student member Alan McGinley (24) took third place on the same total with Martin Elliot (17) playing out of Newtownstewart this year in fourth place with 39 pts, the final nett prize went to Mickey Kelly (9) with a very steady 38 pts, the gross once again went to Mr consistency himself Fred McGavigan (4) with 34 gross pts and with it surely the Golfer of the Year title for 2016, as he has moved on to 115 pts which is 35 pts clear of his nearest challenger the afore mentioned Mark McCrea on 80 pts, there are only two weeks remaining and a total of 40 pts possible for any player to add to their totals, the latter of these being the rearranged BMcNamee Ltd Open on Saturday 8th October, the Saturday after the Captains outing to Donegal Golf club. The nines last Saturday went to Patsy Logue (25) who won the front nine and to Kevin Neeson (10) who took the back nine prize.

Thursday Club week 2
Shane McLaughlin playing in the last four-ball out on Thursday was the winner of week 2 of the Thursday Club with a good total in the conditions of 40 pts.  Shane’s round was all the more remarkable in that he converted no less than three birdie two’s to the delight of his four-ball, I might add, and an early lead in “The King of the Two’s” competition.  The runner up was Neil Conroy (11) who has come on leaps and bounds with his game lately and he was ahead only on break of tie from Charlie Patton (18) on break of tie, despite Charlie’s miraculous chip in at the final hole. The only other player to manage a two on his card on Thursday was Ronnie Wiley.
All members may join the Thursday club this week, it will be played over 15 holes with the “Loop” left out in an effort to rest that area of the course.

Monday Club teams
With the Donegal seniors event on at Murvagh there was a smaller than usual entry for the Monday team’s event, a very close competition ensued however, with the winners declared as Jim Arbuckle, Pascal McGillion, Martin Finlay and Terence McDermott with 101.75 nett, the runners up were Chris McDermott, Robert Bell, Charlie Patton and Oliver McNally with 101.5 nett and third were Denis Porter, Jim Wasson, Hugh Casey and George Turner with 101 Nett

Entries are now being taken for the Leo Kavanagh Memorial Winter Cup sponsored by Sperrin Springs which is set to get underway on Sunday 9th October the fee is £12.50 per player

The Captains outing to Murvagh’s timesheet is at a maximum at present, other players wanting to attend should keep an eye on the board for any cancellations as unfortunately no further times are available at Donegal golf club for the day, Attendees are reminded to have the relevant fee of £40 payed in advance to the Gents box.

Congratulations to Gerard Walsh and his Lawson Cup team who won the Tyrone & Fermanagh title on Sunday past wrapping up their tie with Enniskillen Golf Club, although the games were for the most part close, Strabane got the necessary 4 pts needed early on and the match was called in.
Commiserations however to Shane McLaughlin and his Phair Cup team who really faced an uphill battle in their final with Aughnacloy G.C. having had a very poor first leg home result the team rallied and really looked in the closing stages that they would take the cup, but Aughnacloy got back into the third game on the course to take three points and a five foot missed putt in the bottom match on the last green saw the title go their way, nonetheless a fine effort from the Captain and players of the Strabane team.

This week’s £50 bar credit draw winner was Seamus Flannagan.

Only nine players were eliminated in week 5 of Last Man Standing, week 6 continues this week with the hunt for the £1000 prize.
