Club Notes – 6th September 2016

There was great disappointment from players and supporters alike on Friday past at Shandon Park, when our mixed foursomes team so narrowly missed out on a place in Saturdays All-Ireland Final in their match with Gort Co. Galway. It is a format of golf where things can change so quickly and nothing can ever be taken for granted and this was certainly the case in Friday’s encounter. Gort had got off to a lightning start and found themselves very much in control in the top two matches 5 up and 4 up at the turn although Strabane were more than holding their own in the other ties. It looked like being the Ulster champions day when Cathal Patton and Heather Mitchell came back in the top match to level proceedings after 16 holes and added to that Conor Sharkey and Bernie O’Kane had also turned their match in their favour coming from 4 down to win the match by 2/1, with the other games nip and tuck Strabane were strong favourites but, as can happen and unfortunately did, the pendulum swung once again and this time very much in favour of the Galway team. They won the first match at the final hole to level affairs and then went ahead when Patrick McCrossan and Lauren Patton lost 2 down at the final hole, Gort had also came surging back from 3 down in match four and they also took that match against Declan Devine and Lisa Patton on the final green, Strabane just failing to make par to take the match to tie holes, the final game with Peter Doherty and Lorna Duffy were 1 up and in good position playing the last hole, however victory had dramatically turned to narrow defeat and Strabane were to leave on the day empty handed although the Ulster Champions pennant will hang proudly in the clubhouse for evermore. Gort suffered defeat in the final then on Saturday when the Leinster Champions Greystones took the overall title with a 3.5-1.5 win, congratulations to them.

There was still a very good entry for Saturday’s rearranged open stroke competition kindly sponsored by new sponsors Tru Glory Menswear Main Street, it also provided the score of the year when Liam Callaghan (15) totally dominated proceedings to return a brilliant 60 nett to win by an amazing five shots, Liam has this year returned to the game and has shown great potential especially in matchplay games but everything went right for him on Saturday reducing his handicap by three shots in the process, the runner up was Kevin Heffernan (18) another player who has improved out of all recognition this season so far losing a total of nine shots of his handicap which is no mean feat in one year, his return of 65 nett just got the better of third placed Colin McCafferty (11) on break of tie, Martin Finlay (20) was fourth with 66 nett with the consistant David Friel (11) in fifth place with 67 nett, the categories went to Declan O’Hare (8) with 67 nett, John McMenamin (16) 67 nett and to George Hunter (23) with 68 nett, the gross prize was claimed by Patrick Kennedy (2) with 74 Gross.
