Golf Notes – 30th August 2016

Veteran golfer Foncie McNally (16) was a popular winner of the weekends big event the 7th running of the Brian Patton Memorial Day, which was superbly supported with 178 cards being taken out for the competition, again testament to Brian who was such a great friend and tutor to so many players at the golf club. Foncie returned an excellent score of 42 pts on a day when scoring was particularly good, the runner up was another of the clubs veterans George Hunter (25)  with 41 pts with Michael Kelly (15) from Faughan Valley Golf Club in third place also with 41 pts, junior member Patrick McGranaghan (11) has being featuring regularly and his 41 pts took him to within touching distance of single figures for the first time, fifth went to Raymond Arnold (22) with a solid 40 pts, the gross went to Eoin O’Neill with a two over par round the same total as second gross Enda Kennedy (scr) the nines were claimed by Colin McCafferty (11) who took the first nine and Ben Corry (6) who took the second nine. In the Ladies Section Jennifer Rouse(10) again dominated proceedings and topped the leader board with 39pts, Catherine Neeson (16) was the runner up with 38 pts with Roisin Corry in third with 37 pts.

Strabane Training Services Open
Six handicapper Paul McGill kept his excellent recent run going on Saturday to lift the Strabane Training Services Open with an excellent 41 pts off the blue markers, the runner up was Patsy McHugh (17) also with 41pts, with Ciaran Patton (20) in third place three points further in arrears with 38 pts.  Gerry Quinn (23) was fourth also with 38 pts with James Harron (9) in fifth with the same score. Patrick McCrossan (5) was the gross winner with 31 gross pts with the nines going to Gus McCay (20) and to Charlie Patton.

Saffron Indian Restaurant Open
There was a good entry for last week’s Saffron Indian Restaurant Open with 90 players signing in, unfortunately weather conditions took a major turn for the worst in the late evening with a heavy prolonged downpour coupled with a spectacular electrical storm although the course emptied the competition was declared valid as enough of the total entry had completed their rounds and the course was not declared closed. The winner was Shay Callaghan (8) with 40 pts, the runner up was Stephen McCay (6) with 38pts Martin Keyes (17) was third with 37pts and Paul McGill (6) was the gross winner on this occasion with 37 pts.

Ladies Golf
Last week’s ladies winner was once again Jennifer Rouse (12) who is having a remarkable golfing season, her total of 42 pts was only six over the par for the course, the category one winner was Lady Captain Anne Sharkey (19) with 37 pts with Lady Vice-Captain Patricia Kelly winning category two with 35 pts.

The entire club will be wishing our Irish Mixed Foursomes team the very best of luck on Friday when the tee it up at Shandon Park in the All Ireland Semi-finals against Gort Golf Club Co.Galway with a 10.30am start, hopefully as many members as possible can travel to lend their support.

All Ireland Mixed Team

There was much cause for celebration on Friday night at Strabane Golf Club when the Irish Mixed Foursomes team became Ulster Champions defeating Mahee Island Co.Down in a titanic encounter at Shandon Park Belfast, finally coming out the three matches to two winners. Play had initially been delayed for 30 mins due to the weather conditions, and when matters got underway, Strabane made a relatively slow start and trailed in three of the matches through halfway, our opponents continued to lead in the opening two ties and were 2-0 up in the match winning 4/3 and 2/1in those games.  The local side quickly levelled things when Conor Sharkey and Bernie O’Kane closed their match out 4/3 and that was quickly followed by a win for Declan Devine & Lisa Patton winning 4/2, all eyes turned to the final tie where Pete Doherty and Lorna Duffy were very much back in contention having been two down through 11 holes, but a great run from the Strabane pair saw them two up after 15 holes winning four in a row, a chance was missed at the 16th to take the match but the pair made no mistake at the 17th hole, Peter launching a thumping drive straight down the middle from where Lorna got him to the apron of the green, Peter decided to putt rather than chip and left his effort right on the edge of the hole to spark off great celebration in the Strabane camp and a place in the All-Ireland Finals back at Shandon Park next Friday, 2nd September, where they will represent Ulster and play Gort Golf Club from Co.Galway.  This is in fact the second time in seven years Strabane have taken the title with only one survivor on the side from 2009, hopefully there will be plenty of support for the team in Belfast in their quest to bring home a first ever All-Ireland title to the club.

All Ireland Fourball
Strabane just missed out on Sunday in another Ulster Final appearance this time in the All-Ireland Fourball Ulster semi-final against Black Lion Golf Club from Co.Cavan.  Trailing 4-1 after last week’s away leg Strabane quickly put two matches on the board firstly with an emphatic 7/6 win followed by a 4/3 win. It was three matches soon after with a 2 up win in match three.  In match four our pair were 1 down playing the 17th but a par there from our opponents saw them put a mark on the scoreboard, all attention then turned to the final match where Strabane were two up through 14 holes, and a two holes win would be good enough to send Mark Sharkey’s charges through, however, they lost the 15th hole and were only 1 up playing the 17th, the match was then levelled when the Co.Cavan player struck home a 30ft birdie putt, Strabane needed to win the final hole to send the match into a play-off but unfortunately it wasn’t to be as the hole was halved in five and it was Black Lion that were through to the Ulster Final at Roe Park in a fortnights time, commiserations to the entire team a great effort over the summer was put in by all with many memorable and successful encounters.
In other Inter Club competitions Shane McLaughlin’s Phair Cup team have it all to do losing out by 10.5-5.5 after the first leg of their final played at home, although the matches were close their opponents Aughnacloy Golf Club will feel they have already one hand on the trophy.  Freddie Patterson’s Donegal Junior team had a convincing win over Buncrana winning 5-0 but will still need to win a match at the very tricky Inishowen links to advance.

Special mention this week for our young golfing starlet Conor Byrne who won the Munster Under 14’s Boys Championship at Tipperary Golf Club, the only player on the day to go under par out of the 110 strong field returning a brilliant one under round.

Valerie Manning Club Championship
Domestic matters were to the fore on Saturday with the prestigious Club Championship 2016 up for decision, it eventually went to a very deserving winner in Fred McGavigan (4) a player who again this year has been a model of consistency and his level par round on Saturday was good enough to take the title by one stroke from his playing partner Patrick Kennedy.  Third went to Mark McColgan with 72 gross. In the nett section Stephen Conroy (9) has come back to the game with a bang and his stunning 62 nett was the outright winner in this section by three points from his playing partner Gary O’Connell (8) with 65 nett, third place went to the very much in form Kevin McGinley (10) with 66 nett. The nines on the day went to Sammy Devenney (21) and to Paul Bogle (12).

There was a good turnout for the Thursday Open kindly sponsored by FMC Accountants, the winner was Rory Doherty (10) who returned to single figures with a good 40pts, Paul O’Reilly (5) was the runner up with 39pts with Kevin Gallagher (15) in third with 38pts, Keith Patterson was the gross winner on this occasion with 32 gross pts.

Ladies open Sponsored by Claire’s Hair Salon
There was a quite stunning score in the Claire’s Hair Salon Ladies Open event on Tuesday past when Marion O’Reilly (24) got round in eleven over par to post an incredible 49 pts.  Marion has only recently returned to the game and what a way to announce it, she was the clear 13pts winner from the runner up Catherine Neeson (16) with 36pts with Debbie McDaid (36) third with 35 pts, the gross winner was Mandy Coyne with the categories going to Norma Brogan, Monica McGettigan and Ann McCrory, the nines went to Mary Gallagher and to Mary Duffy.

Presidents Mixed foursomes
The Presidents Mixed Foursomes was finally played on Wednesday with Geraldine Masterson & Senan Roarty the winners with 23pts over the ten holes in play, the runners up were Mary Duffy & Ciaran Kelly with 22 pts with Patricia Kelly & Foncie McNally in third with 20 pts, the gross prize went to Norma Brogan and Pat McAneny.

Club Notes – 16th August 2016

President's Prize Declan O'HareDeclan O’Hare (9) was the winner on Saturday of Mr Jim Arbuckle’s Presidents Prize with a total of 40pts, a great score on the day with all agreeing that the course was playing to its maximum length with fairly soft conditions due to the continued wet spell of weather, that said however, the course was presented in its usual pristine condition with the greens immaculate as always. Declan started his round with three successive bogies but steadied the ship to reach the turn with 21pts and a run of four closing pars was good enough to take the day’s beautiful first prize just eclipsing the runner up Joe Doherty (19),who, despite a double bogey six at the 17th hole amassed 21pts on the back nine to finish on 39 pts, the same total as third placed Michael Neeson (11) who had also ran into bother at the penultimate par 4 hole. Fourth went to early morning starter Marc Brolly (10) also with 39 pts, the final nett prize went to Francie Devine (11) with 38 pts, Patrick Kennedy was the gross winner with 35 gross pts, a notable double for Patrick as he had two weeks previous taken the gross prize on Captains Day. The nines went to Johnny McGillion (23) with 22 pts for the outward nine and to Brian Cairns who had 23 pts for the back nine, the Presidents guests winner on the day was Pat Corry (11) with 35 pts. The President thanked all who had endeavoured to keep the club running so successfully throughout his tenure and thanked all the members for their good wishes on his day.

Farmers Home Open Stableford
Kevin McGinley (12) was the impressive winner of last Thursdays Farmers Home Open Stableford with a fine total of 43pts which was good enough by three points on the day from runner up Oliver Creswell (12) and from third placed Jim Harley (19) also with 40 pts. Club Notes – 9th August 2016

Our Mixed Foursomes team have advanced to the Ulster final with a great 5-0 win over Cushendall Golf Club on Sunday at Roe Park.  We will meet Mahee Island Golf club in the decider at Shandon Park Belfast on Friday 19th August after the Co.Down club overcame 2014 Ulster champions Rosapenna by three matches to two in their semi-final. Strabane got their noses in front early on in Sunday’s tense encounter at Limavady taking a significant advantage in four of the ties and with the weather conditions worsening as the afternoon progressed their opponents never really looked like turning the match around, a fantastic performance from the entire team with everyone very much at the top of their game. Team captains Senan & Patricia have asked for as much support as possible from club members and supporters for the final in Belfast.
Best wishes also to Mark Sharkey and his Ulster Fourball team who will play their Ulster Semi-Final against Black Lion Golf Club this coming Sunday at the Co.Cavan club.

Club Notes 2nd August 2016

captains day b brolly 032Five handicapper Cathal Patton was a very popular winner of Mr Brian Brolly’s Captains Prize on Saturday with a winning total of 67 nett, Cathal is still recovering from a major work related injury that put him out of the game for an entire season but the grit and determination he has shown to get back playing to his own very high standards speaks volumes for the man and the countless congratulations and best wishes that have come his way with this great win are all richly deserved. There had been an element of confusion on the day with actual overall finishing positions, as for the first time all our new membership categories had been allowed to participate on the day although the rule that only a premium rate category member or O.A.P. rate can win first prize on both, Captains Day and indeed Presidents Day, although all members could compete for all the other great prizes up for grabs on the day. Second season member John McCallion (21) has been making huge inroads into the game of golf and he continued his fantastic season with an eye-catching total of 62 nett on Saturday which saw him awarded second place and his handicap reduced to 18 a fact he was most delighted about, John is certainly a player to watch out for in the coming years. Also in this category was third placed Sean Elliot (13) who, with his huge power of the tee, got round in 65 nett, again, Sean has been having a great season since his return to the game and I’d say another player destined for single figures in the not too distant future.
Paul Given (18) is also a new category member with huge potential, and he had his best round to date on Saturday to capture fourth place with 67 nett, veteran Hugo McCusker (12) always a model of consistency took fifth place with 68 nett. Patrick Kennedy (2) took the gross prize on Saturday with a fine total of one over par continuing his great season to date, the nines went to Jimmy Henderson (25) who won the outward nine and to Paul Bogle (12) who took the inward nine. The winner of the Captains guests prize was Fred McGavigan (4) with 37 pts with Marc Brolly (10) second with 36 pts. Gary O’Connell took a great double at the final hole not only winning the longest drive but also winning the nearest the pin on his way to a tap in birdie putt. In his speech the Captain thanked everyone who had helped him throughout his tenure to date and to all that had given up their time on the day and had helped in anyway.

Captains Mixed Foursomes
Twenty seven pairs participated on Wednesday evening for the Captain’s Mixed Foursomes with Debbie Mc Daid and Conor Sharkey the winning duo with 34pts for the 15 holes in play, this was a notable double for Debbie who two weeks previous had teamed up with Oliver McNally to win the Lady Captains Mixed event. In second place on Wednesday also with 34 pts were Monica Mc Gettigan and Patrick McCrossan with third place going to Carole Mc Feeters and Senan Roarty with 32 pts, Lisa Patton and Danny Duffy were the winners of the gross prize. The Captains better-ball that had been scheduled for last Thursday was postponed due to heavy rain and will now be played this Thursday 4th August.

Ladies Golf
Last week’s Ladies event was the Captain’s Prize to the Ladies, the winner was this year’s Ladies Captains prize winner Jennifer Rouse (12) with 71 nett an excellent total in the inclement weather conditions that prevailed throughout the day, the category one winner was Lady Captain Anne Sharkey (19) with 72 nett with Caren Corry (30) winning category two with 78 Nett.

Monday Open
Monday’s Open competition went the way off 14 year old Conor Byrne (6) with a fine two over par round that equated to 40pts, the runner up was Adrian McLaughlin (11) with 38pts, Adrian was a great winner last week at Slieve Russell golf club winning their midweek open with a fine 41pts, third on Monday was Paul O’Reilly (5) also with 38 pts. Fred McGavigan won yet another gross prize to add to his collection with 31 gross points.

Great week for Inter-club events for Strabane.
Mark Sharkey’s All-Ireland Fourball have advanced to the Ulster Semi-Finals where they will play Co.Cavan club Blacklion after they completed their second leg quarter final tie with Carnalea G.C. on Sunday past getting the required 2.5 matches up on the board, the match was then called to a halt with two matches still on the course. The match was played in a tremendous spirit with each of the teams enjoying each others wonderful hospitality.

In Tyrone and Fermanagh ties it was also a great week for Strabane, on Monday Night Gerard Walsh’s Lawson Cup team won their tie with Fintona Golf Club by 14.5 – 1.5 pts overturning last Fridays away leg result of 14 – 2 to win by the narrowest of margins, a tremendous fight back in a very exciting game of golf. Also advancing to the final are Shane McLaughlin’s Phair Cup team who were also in action against Fintona on Monday night in their away leg having been well ahead from the first match they wrapped up the tie but not without a scare or two from their opponents on the night. Good luck to both teams in their respective finals.
Best wishes also to Patricia Kelly and Senan Roarty the joint Captains of our  All-Ireland Mixed team who play in their Ulster Semi-Final on Sunday at Roe Park golf club Limavady, where their opponents will be Cushendall Golf club from Co.Antrim.
