Club Notes – 26th July 2016

MAXWELL WINS JOHN FAHY & CO OPEN
John Maxwell (10) playing in one of the last fourballs of the day was the winner of the John Fahy & Co Open Stableford played on Saturday past, with a score of 40 pts which was an excellent total on a day of frequent showers and breezy conditions, the unlucky runner up beaten on break of tie was Kieran McBride (23).  Kieran got to the turn with a massive 26pts on his card but added only 14 more on the back nine when it seemed all the hard work had been already done, third place just a point behind was the very consistent Mark Neely (12) with another player who has been a model of consistency since his return to the game Michael Houston (11) in fourth with 38pts, Brian Kelly (21) took the final nett prize also with 38pts, Ryan McGowan (7) was the gross winner with 30 gross pts, Liam McGinley (21) was the first nine winner with 24pts and Jordan Arthur (6) won the back nine with 21pts.  The over 60’s winner was Charlie Patton(18) with 36pts.

Mitchell Meats Open
Last Thursday’s event was the Mitchell’s Meats Open which had an entry of over 100, the winner was Eoghan Farrell (19) who continues to improve rapidly and his 42pts was good enough here by two points from the runner up Ryan McGowan (7) with 40pts, John McMenamin (17) had been the early clubhouse leader returning an early morning 39pts but had to settle for third in the end, the gross prize went to Peter Doherty (5) with 32 gross pts.

 Monday Open
Rory McColgan (13) was the clear winner of Monday’s open competition with an excellent 44pts, relegating the unfortunate Stephen McCay (6) to second place with 42pts which was a fine level par round for Stephen and a welcome return to form, third went to Gary O’Connell (10) also with 42 pts, Martin McDermott (5) was the gross winner with 32 gross pts.

Ladies Golf
Last week’s ladies event was the Bank of Ireland Trophy and it went in resounding fashion to Catherine Neeson (17) with an eye-catching 43 pts, Catherine was a clear five points winner from category one winner Mandy Coyne (8) with Mary Gallagher (31) winning category two with 36 pts.

Last week’s mixed event was a team greensomes, the winners were Olive Reid & Sammy Devenney who teamed up with Rachel Devenney & Eric Reid to record a best of the evening 41pts, the runners up were Carmel mcElwee & Francie Devine and their partners Monica MacIntyre & Jason Gourley a point behind on 40pts.

The Lady Captains Charity was breast cancer awareness to which members contributions were made on Lady Captain’s day a total of £1125.00 was amassed, the Lady Captain Anne would like to thank everyone who contributed to her nominated charity.

ALL IRELAND FOURBALL
Mark Sharkey’s All-Ireland Fourball team were in action on Sunday at the Ulster quarter final stage in Carnalea Golf Club Co. Down and came away with a tremendous result winning the tie by three matches to two, the home leg is this Sunday, tee off time 1pm and although Strabane will be resounding favourites to progress nothing will be taken for granted.

Our Roberts Cup team under the captaincy of Ryan McGowan exited that event on Monday night just failing to overturn the first leg deficit against a talented Omagh G.C. team.

Shane McLaughlin’s Phair Cup team managed to win their first leg semi-final tie against Fintona G.C.12.5 pts – 3.5 pts in what was a very close match despite what the scoreline would suggest.

The next game of Last Man Standing gets underway on the opening Saturday of the new Premier League season, entry is again £10 with £1000 guaranteed to the winner.

Finally, this Saturday is Captains Day at the club, good luck to all competitors and best wishes to Captain Brian Brolly for a great day.
Music will be provided after the presentation by “RIFF-RAFF.”  There is also music in the club on Sunday evening at 6pm with Niall Gallagher.
