Club Notes – 19th July 2016

LADY CAPTAINS PRIZE FOR JENNIFER

Jennifer Rouse (13) kept her best golf of the season for exactly the right occasion to win Mrs Anne Sharkey’s Lady Captains Prize in great style on Saturday, eventually running out the winner by a clear margin of four strokes with an eye catching total of 66 net.  Thankfully the near monsoon conditions from the previous day had relented and the ladies got a great day for golf with the course presented in immaculate condition as always. The runner up on the day was Shauna Stewart (14) just getting the better of Junior Girls Captain Abbey Maxwell (25) on break of tie both players recording good totals of 70 Nett. The gross prize was claimed by Mandy Coyne (8) with 84 gross. In category one the winner was Bernie O’Kane (19) with 71 nett and the runner up Lauren Patton (15) with 73 nett, in category two the winner was Heather Mitchell (22) with 73 nett with Monica McGettigan (24) in second place with 78 nett.
In category three, lady Vice-Captain Patricia Kelly (30) took the honours with 72 nett with Mary Casey (31)the runner up here with 73 net.  The nines prizes went to Debbie McDaid who won the first nine and to Olive Reid who claimed the back nine prize. Other prize winners were Kathleen Hoynes who won the senior category, Geraldine McCrory the committee prize, the granny prize went to Maeve Crowe, best lady visitor went to Yvonne Armstrong, Lady Captain of Newtownstewart, the prize for the best male guest went to the Lady Captains husband Mark Sharkey with Martin Corry the runner up here. The best male novice category went to Declan Pollock, the best lady novice prize was won by Olive Gillespie with Aine Sharkey in second place. The prize for the longest drive went to Shauna Stewart and Mandy Coyne won the nearest the pin challenge.

There was also an 11 holes competition for the men played in the evening the winner here was Eddie Finlay with 27 pts and Mark Gillespie the runner up with 24pts. Just before the presentations the Lady Captain made a wonderful speech sincerely thanking everyone who had contributed in making her year as Lady Captain so memorable and to all who had participated in making her big day the huge success that it was.

In a prelude to Lady Captains day 30 pairs turned out for the Lady Captains Mixed greensomes competition played on Wednesday evening and kindly sponsored by Dolan’s Nisa Stores Lifford road, the winners were Debbie McDaid and Oliver McNally with 35 pts over the 13 holes in play, the runners up were Heather Mitchell and Frankie Connolly with 33 pts with Catherine Neeson and Ciaran Patton in third with 32 pts, the gross prize winners were Lorna Duffy and Ronnie Wiley.

Eileen Logue Memorial Cup
The ladies weekly competition played on Tuesday last was the Eileen Logue Memorial Cup which was claimed by Lauren Patton (17) with a fine 65 nett, Lady Captain Anne Sharkey (19) was the winner in category one with 71 nett with Ann McCrory (36) the winner in category two with 75 nett.

Our All-Ireland Mixed Foursomes had a tremendous win on Monday night in Armagh in their Ulster Quarter-final tie with Knock G.C. leading well throughout the tie none of the matches were lost as the Strabane squad put the necessary three points on the board to advance to the semi-finals, a fantastic performance from everyone on the night!

Good luck to Mark Sharkey and his Ulster Fourball team who take on Carnalea G.C. in Co.Down this Sunday in the first leg of their Ulster quarter final, as a result of this match being played the Captains mixed foursomes has been moved until next Wednesday 27th July.

McGoldrick’s Sports Open
There was an excellent turnout for last Thursday’s men’s open stableford which was kindly sponsored by Raymond McGoldrick of McGoldricks Sports Main Street Strabane. The winner was relative newcomer to the club Stephen Acheson (16) with a great total of 41pts, Sean Elliot (14) kept up his excellent recent form to take second place with 39pts with Paddy McGranaghan (10) again in the frame in third with 38pts.The gross went to Eoin O’Neill (4) with 33 gross pts.

The clubs fundraising draw has been postponed for a few weeks
Another Last Man Standing competition is set to get underway on the opening Saturday of the new Premiership season, entry is £10 with a guaranteed £1000 for the winner.
