MAXWELL WINS JOHN FAHY & CO OPEN
John Maxwell (10) playing in one of the last fourballs of the day was the winner of the John Fahy & Co Open Stableford played on Saturday past, with a score of 40 pts which was an excellent total on a day of frequent showers and breezy conditions, the unlucky runner up beaten on break of tie was Kieran McBride (23).  Kieran got to the turn with a massive 26pts on his card but added only 14 more on the back nine when it seemed all the hard work had been already done, third place just a point behind was the very consistent Mark Neely (12) with another player who has been a model of consistency since his return to the game Michael Houston (11) in fourth with 38pts, Brian Kelly (21) took the final nett prize also with 38pts, Ryan McGowan (7) was the gross winner with 30 gross pts, Liam McGinley (21) was the first nine winner with 24pts and Jordan Arthur (6) won the back nine with 21pts.  The over 60’s winner was Charlie Patton(18) with 36pts.

Mitchell Meats Open
Last Thursday’s event was the Mitchell’s Meats Open which had an entry of over 100, the winner was Eoghan Farrell (19) who continues to improve rapidly and his 42pts was good enough here by two points from the runner up Ryan McGowan (7) with 40pts, John McMenamin (17) had been the early clubhouse leader returning an early morning 39pts but had to settle for third in the end, the gross prize went to Peter Doherty (5) with 32 gross pts.

 Monday Open
Rory McColgan (13) was the clear winner of Monday’s open competition with an excellent 44pts, relegating the unfortunate Stephen McCay (6) to second place with 42pts which was a fine level par round for Stephen and a welcome return to form, third went to Gary O’Connell (10) also with 42 pts, Martin McDermott (5) was the gross winner with 32 gross pts.

Ladies Golf
Last week’s ladies event was the Bank of Ireland Trophy and it went in resounding fashion to Catherine Neeson (17) with an eye-catching 43 pts, Catherine was a clear five points winner from category one winner Mandy Coyne (8) with Mary Gallagher (31) winning category two with 36 pts.

Last week’s mixed event was a team greensomes, the winners were Olive Reid & Sammy Devenney who teamed up with Rachel Devenney & Eric Reid to record a best of the evening 41pts, the runners up were Carmel mcElwee & Francie Devine and their partners Monica MacIntyre & Jason Gourley a point behind on 40pts.

The Lady Captains Charity was breast cancer awareness to which members contributions were made on Lady Captain’s day a total of £1125.00 was amassed, the Lady Captain Anne would like to thank everyone who contributed to her nominated charity.

ALL IRELAND FOURBALL
Mark Sharkey’s All-Ireland Fourball team were in action on Sunday at the Ulster quarter final stage in Carnalea Golf Club Co. Down and came away with a tremendous result winning the tie by three matches to two, the home leg is this Sunday, tee off time 1pm and although Strabane will be resounding favourites to progress nothing will be taken for granted.

Our Roberts Cup team under the captaincy of Ryan McGowan exited that event on Monday night just failing to overturn the first leg deficit against a talented Omagh G.C. team.

Shane McLaughlin’s Phair Cup team managed to win their first leg semi-final tie against Fintona G.C.12.5 pts – 3.5 pts in what was a very close match despite what the scoreline would suggest.

The next game of Last Man Standing gets underway on the opening Saturday of the new Premier League season, entry is again £10 with £1000 guaranteed to the winner.

Finally, this Saturday is Captains Day at the club, good luck to all competitors and best wishes to Captain Brian Brolly for a great day.
Music will be provided after the presentation by “RIFF-RAFF.”  There is also music in the club on Sunday evening at 6pm with Niall Gallagher.

Our All-Ireland Mixed Foursomes had a tremendous win on Monday night in Armagh in their Ulster Quarter-final tie with Knock G.C. leading well throughout the tie none of the matches were lost as the Strabane squad put the necessary three points on the board to advance to the semi-finals, a fantastic performance from everyone on the night!

Good luck to Mark Sharkey and his Ulster Fourball team who take on Carnalea G.C. in Co.Down this Sunday in the first leg of their Ulster quarter final, as a result of this match being played the Captains mixed foursomes has been moved until next Wednesday 27th July.

Club Notes – 12th July 2016

ULSTER FOUR-BALL PROGRESS
A brilliant performance from Mark Sharkey’s charges on Sunday has seen his side advance to the Ulster Fourball quarter finals after overturning a 4.5-0.5 deficit from the previous weeks match against  Clones G.C. the Strabane team winning all five matches on Sunday in convincing fashion racking up a twenty two holes advantage in the process, they will now meet Carnalea G.C from County Down in the last eight.

Irish Road Motors Open
Despite the showery & windy conditions for Saturday’s Irish Road Motors Accident and Repair Centre Open 169 cards were still taken out for the event. The winner was relative newcomer to the game John Gallagher (19) with an excellent total of 42pts, twenty-three of which came on the inward nine holes giving him a great score on the day and a clear winner by four points from his nearest challenger Peter Etherson (21), Mark Quinn (14) also recorded 38 pts to take third place, the top three players all being early morning starters and possibly enjoying the best of the days weather elements. Lee Hannigan (12) is definitely another fairly new member showing great potential and he took fourth spot on Saturday again with 38pts, the final nett prize went to visiting player Jason Donnell (19) with 37pts, the gross prize went to Paddy McCrossan (5) with an excellent 33 gross pts, the nines were claimed by Maurice mcGettigan (17) with 21pts for the first nine and to John McCallion (20) who had the same total for the back nine holes.

McBrearty’s Mace Store Open
There was a very good midweek entry for the Martin McBrearty’s Mace Store Open played on Thursday past. The winner was the very much in form Patrick McCrossan (6) with 41pts which was a clear three shot winner from the runner up Aidan Boyle (6) with Andrew Connolly (9) in third also with 38pts and making it a clean sweep for the single figure handicappers on a difficult day for golf. The gross prize went to Patrick Kennedy (2) with 33 gross pts.

Monday Open
Hugh McGinley (25) was the narrow winner in Monday’s open stableford with 40pts, just getting the better of Barry Patterson (10) on break of tie, Patrick McGranaghan (10) was in third place back on 38pts, Darren Crawford (4) took the gross prize with 32 gross pts.

FRIEL TAKES THE FOOTHILLS OPEN
Seamus Friel (23) playing in the last four-ball out on the course was the winner of the Foothill’s Open Gortin played on Saturday past. Conditions had been difficult for most of the day with the rain and wind making good scores hard to come by, the winning score was 65 nett.  Seamus had got off to a tremendous start only four over par to the turn and looked on course for a runaway win but a succession of shots lost over the next eight holes seemed to have put an end to his chances until a great birdie at the last hole to a very difficult front of green pin position gave him revived hope and eventually a single shot win from the early morning leader Dermott Corry (13) who despite running up an ugly nine at the par five fifth hole battled well to post a 66 nett total to continue his great run of form, third place went to Kevin Neeson (11) another player to birdie the 18th hole, fourth went to Vincent Bradley (20) with 68 Nett with John Langan (14) taking the final nett prize also with 68 nett, the categories went to Patrick McGranaghan (11) with 69 nett, Damien mcCrossan (18) with 68 nett and to Enda McDonnell (23) also with 68 nett, Liam McGinley (21) won the over 60’s prize with 70 net

STRABANE A.F.C. LADIES & GENTS OPEN
With the North-West Open on and club matches away there was a smaller than expected turnout for Sunday’s Strabane AFC Ladies & Gents Open. The winner in the men’s section was Neil Conroy (12) another player who has made significant progress this season, the left handers total of 40pts was good enough by two from the runner up Fred McGavigan (4) with Shay Callaghan (8) in third with 37pts, Keith Patterson (6) took the gross with 31 gross pts. The winner in the Ladies section was Lisa Patton (16) with 38pts. No one managed to secure a hole in one at the par three 16th hole which would have yielded the prize of a brand new car.

Hugh Harley Memorial
Despite the horrible weather conditions for last Thursday’s Hugh Harley Memorial Cup there was still a decent entry of 94 players.  The winner was trainee greenkeeper Lewis Jones (14) with a great total in the wet conditions of 41 pts, second went to Rodney Dolan (23) with 39pts with Rory Doherty (9) maintaining his great form to take third place with 38 pts, Eoin O’Neill (4) took yet another gross prize with 33pts on this occasion.

Ladies Section
Bernie O’Kane (20) was the winner on Ladies day for the second consecutive week winning the Eileen Keery Memorial Cup with a score of 70 nett, the winner in category one was yet again Lady Captain Anne Sharkey (19) also with 70 net, Kathleen Hoynes (36) was a popular winner in category two with 71 nett.

 Mixed Foursomes
The entry sheets have been posted for the Lady Captains Mixed event which takes place this coming Sunday 10th July 2pm-4pm.  Last Wednesday’s  event was the annual sausage sizzle barbecue which saw a great entry and a great fun night many thanks to our guest Chefs Seamus & Ann McPhilemy, Monica & Liam Patton and Kathleen Magee.
The best score on the night was posted by Lady Captain Anne Sharkey and her husband Mark with 32pts over the 13 holes in play, the runners up were Carmel McElwee & Ronnie Wiley also with 32pts with Mary Duffy & Billy Doherty in third with 31 pts.
