Club Notes – 29th June 2016

OPEN WEEK CONCLUDES AT STRABANE
Open week at Strabane came to an end on Saturday past with the Mark James Menswear Open stableford played off the blue markers. 185 cards were taken out for the event with the win going to Ciaran Murphy (10) who is another player having a very good season to date, his total of 41pts saw him take the win by a single shot from the ever improving Mark Gillespie (15) who with third placed Mark McColgan (6) returned 40pts, John J Duffy (16) took fourth position back on 38pts with Michael Houston (11) again featuring to take the final nett prize also with 38pts.  The gross again went to Eoin O’Neill (4) with a four over par total of 32 gross points, the nines went to Martin Keyes (17) and to Seamus Friel (23) with Foncie McNally (16) taking the over 60’s prize on this occasion with 35pts.
The presentation for this and other outstanding Open Week events will take place on Sunday 3rd July at 8pm, the rescheduled June prize giving takes place on Friday 1st July at 8.30pm.

Special mention to our green-keeping staff who as always had the course in pristine condition for the entire week.

JD Print Open Mixed Foursomes
There was a good turnout of players for last Wednesday’s Open mixed foursomes sponsored by local printing company JD Print. The runaway winners were the pairing off Lisa Patton who teamed up with Frankie Connolly to post a brilliant 41pts, all the more impressive as Frankie has just returned to the game after a lengthy absence due to injury. The runners up some five points in arrears were Debbie McDaid and Mark Gillespie with Lauren Patton and Conal Cooke in third also back on 36pts, the gross winners were Jennifer Rouse and Freddie Patterson.

Murphy’s on the Green Open Stableford
Thursdays competition was the Murphy’s on the Green Open Stableford with 110 players taking out cards, the winner was Matthew Curran (13) with 41pts just getting the better of Sean Elliot (15) on break of tie, Patrick McGranaghan (11) another of our talented up and coming junior players took third place with 39pts, the gross went to Fred McGavigan(4) with a fine one over par total giving him 35 gross points, the best visitor on the day was Ciaran McGuinness (9) with 35pts.

Bertie Colhoun Open Greensomes
The weather unfortunately had taken a turn for the worse decimating the field for Friday’s competition the Open Greensomes, especially the morning and afternoon competitors who had to endure some extremely heavy downpours. The conditions had relented somewhat to allow play to proceed by early evening. The winners were Aidan Boyle and Andrew Connolly with 40pts,which won on break of tie from Peter Doherty and Johnny McGillian.

Donna’s Flowerbox Ladies Open.
The ladies open on Tuesday was sponsored by Donna’s Flowerbox Ltd and, as always, some beautiful prizes were on display for the Ladies branch. The winner with a fantastic total was Bernie O’Kane with 41pts, the runner up with 37pts was Jennifer Rouse, Patricia Kelly took third place with the gross prize going to Margaret Roarty playing out of Narin & Portnoo golf club. The category winners were Lisa Patton, Debbie McDaid and Maeve Corry.

Irish Mixed Foursomes
Our Irish Mixed Foursomes team will play Knock Golf Club in the round of 16, after a great win on Monday past in Dungannon against Co. Cavan Golf club by three matches to two, after looking out of the tie early on the local team fought back brilliantly to take the tie after a win at the 19th hole and then securing a half in the final match to win 1 up in that game and a very narrow win overall.

Congratulations to Gerard Walsh’s Lawson Cup team who made it through to the next round, after a hard fought won against Castlehume G.C.  Gerard’s team will now play Fintona G.C. in the semi-final.

Strabane AFC are hosting a Ladies & Gents Open Stableford on Sunday, again a brand new car is up for grabs for anyone managing to score a hole in one at the 16th hole, entries are through the BRS System, there are many other great prizes also on offer, please support our local Soccer club.

There is an 8o’s themed night in the clubhouse on Saturday night with Klassix Disco, all the proceeds will go to the local Melmount Community Forum who do such great work for the pensioners in our area with regular bus trips and generally looking after their needs, all support would be greatly appreciated you can pay at the door and admission is £5.00

The winner of this week’s £50 bar Credit draw was Jim Malcolm.
