GERARD WINS G.A.GAMBLE OPEN

Gerard Conaty (18) took the honours at Strabane on Saturday past winning the J.A.Gamble Open stableford, with a very tidy return of 41pts.  Although the weather conditions were excellent for the entire day it was still noted that all the nett prize winners began their rounds in the afternoon finishing in the early evening, and in fact the winner was in the second last four-ball on the course, the unlucky runner up on the day was Gerry Glover (18) beaten only on break of tie, Gus McCay (20) had a very good round to finish in third two points back on 39pts, just ahead of Seamus Friel (24) on countback.  Michael Kelly (10) had also 39pts and finished fifth, congratulations also to Michael for winning the Tommy Falconer Trophy the next day at Ballybofey G.C. a really well attended outing organised by Dixies Bar in memory of Tommy, over £4000 was also raised in the draw, a fantastic effort by the organisers.
The gross prize on Saturday went to Patrick Kennedy (3) with 32 gross pts with the nines being claimed by Don Callan and Mark McCrea respectively. Congratulations also to Hugh McGinley who recorded his first ever hole in one, holing out at the par 3 second hole with a fine 5 iron shot winning for himself a beautiful Boss watch compliments of “How Did I Do and Boss Ltd.”

Greg Mitchell Motors
Thursday’s competition was kindly sponsored by Greg Mitchell Motors and saw a win for Freddie Patterson (8) who had been showing signs of a return to his best form over the winter months.  A fine three over par round gave him the win with 41pts from the ever improving Lee Hannigan (14) who equalled Freddie’s total of 41pts but just lost out on countback. Ciaran Murphy (13) finished in third just a point behind, with Conal Cooke (2) taking the gross prize with a one over 35 gross total.

Monday Open
There were again glorious conditions for Mondays Bank Holiday Open with long hitter Ciaran Murphy (11) remaining in great form to take the win with a fine 42pts.  The runner up was 14 year old Conor Byrne (8) who is without doubt our most outstanding young prospect, he got round here in three over par to post 41pts and move to a new low for him of seven handicap. Third place went to Kevin Gallagher (15) also with 41pts, Kevin is another player that is having a fine golfing season to date. Paul O’Reilly (6) took the gross with 32 gross pts and Daryl Patton (15) from Silverwood golf club took the visitors prize with 36pts.

Ladies Golf
The winner of last week’s Ladies competition the Georgina Gregg Memorial was Catherine Neeson (18) with 70 nett, the category winners were Lady Captain Anne Sharkey (19) who won her category for the fourth successive week and Geraldine McCrory (31) who had the same score as Anne, 71 nett, to win category two.

Mixed Golf
Fifteen Pairs played in last Wednesday nights Reverse Mixed foursomes with Monica and Maurice McGettigan running out the winners with 33pts for the 15 holes the same total as Annette Patton and Freddie Patterson in second, and Carmel mcElwee and Jim Potts in third place.
The Worcester Cup qualifying event will be played on Wednesday 8th June and the popular “Sausage Sizzle” on Wed 29th June.
Good luck to our Mixed foursomes team who play Newtownstewart at Ballybofey G.C. this Friday3rd June.

Strabane G.C was one of the qualifying venues for this year’s Irish Junior Cup with ten clubs attempting to qualify for the matchplay stages, very well done to team captain, Damian McGranaghan, and his charges who topped the leader-board by an impressive 12 shots on the day on 296, next to them were close neighbours Ballybofey G.C. on 308, the other qualifiers were Royal Portrush and Castlerock G.C. who will now play Strabane at City of Derry G.C on a date yet to be arranged.

Good luck to all our members playing in this Sundays Frylite Senior Scratch Cup, the forecast is excellent and some great golf is anticipated.

TOUGH CONDITIONS FOR GOLF STORE STROKE

The mini-heatwave had certainly subsided for Saturday’s competition the Strabane Golf Store stroke, so much so, that placing on fairways was reintroduced for the day, that said there were still some excellent performances on a really tough day for good scoring.  Best of the day was Declan Lynch (11) with a solid total of 66 nett giving him the win over Paddy Kennedy (3) who I’m sure will feel somewhat unlucky after an excellent level par round of 69 gross that also equated to 66 net, James Magee (20) was third also on break of tie, with four players completing their rounds with 67 net.  Fourth place went to the very much in form Eoin O’Neill (5) with Gerry Glover taking the final nett prize again with 67 nett. The ever consistent Fred McGavigan (4) took the gross prize with a two over par 71 gross. Being a stroke competition there were also category prizes awarded and these went to Gary Duffy (10) in category one, Stewart McFeeters (17) in category two and Terence McCay (24) in category three, all with 68 net.
Many thanks to Freddie Patterson at the new club store for sponsoring the competition.

T.Oscar Rollins
Last Thursdays event was the T.S. Oscar Rollins stableford, again conditions were wet and windy for most of the day greatly affecting the entry numbers. Relative newcomer to the club Stephen Whyte (13) left his mark returning a winning 40pts with Conal Cooke (2) the runner up with a fine one under gross 39pts, third went to the ever improving Kevin Heffernan (22) also with 39pts, Caolan Crawford took the gross prize with 31gross points and David Forbes (7) from Faughan Valley G.C. taking the visitors prize with 32pts.

Monday Open
This week’s Monday open went the way of Stephen Donaghey (10) who has been having a fantastic season to date and it looks only a matter of time until he hits single figures in his handicap a good total here of 39 pts will help him on his way to that goal. The runner up was Martin Patton (12) also with 39pts, club competition secretary Patrick McCrossan (6) took third place with 37pts and Fred McGavigan (3) again took the gross this time with 33 gross pts.

Ladies Golf
Catherine Neeson (18) was the Ladies competition winner last week lifting the Georgina Gregg Trophy with a good 70 nett, the category winners were Lady Captain Anne Sharkey (19) with 71 nett and Geraldine McCrory (31) also with 71 nett.
Mary Duffy’s Intermediate Cup team have it all to do after Mondays match with Enniskillen G.C losing out 1.5—3.5 in the home leg.

Inter Club Golf
There was much disappointment on Monday evening when our Jimmy Bruen side lost out to close neighbours Ballybofey in the first round of matchplay, going down by three matches to two at Letterkenny G.C.
Our Fred Daly team have also gone out losing to a very talented Cairndhu G.C side over the two legs. Our Conway Cup duly wrapped up their second leg tie with Aughnacloy G.C having all but secured the win with an excellent away result the previous week, the first two matches out on Sunday both won and the match was called in.
Best wishes to our Irish Foursomes Mixed team who are in action against Newtownstewart G.C. in Ballybofey this week, and to our Junior Cup team who attempt to qualify on Sunday at the qualifying event held at Strabane.

Super Going by Eoin.
A superb two under gross round which transferred to 44pts gave teenager Eoin O’Neill (6) a great win in the Oysters Restaurant Open Stableford last Saturday. The season’s best entry to date 198 players took cards out for Saturday’s event with the condition of the course reflecting the beautiful weather that had prevailed throughout last week. One over par to the turn Eoin picked up birdies at the 11th & 12th holes and finished in fine style having recorded a trio of threes for his last three holes reducing his handicap to a new low for him of 4.8. As well as the winner played he needed every point as the runner up Dermott Cairns (18) finished only a single point behind him a great round from Dermott who seems to have sorted out a few problems with his game of late and will be glad to be reducing his handicap again. James Patton (14) also found a bit of form to take third place despite a blank hole at the 16th hole he managed to accumulate 24 pts on the inward nine to finish on a total of 41pts, Neil Conroy (12) has been having a brilliant season so far and he also returned 41pts to take 4th place just ahead of Stephen Whyte (15) on the same points total. The gross went to the ever reliable Fred McGavigan (4) who was just one over par in recording 39pts, the nines went to Paul O’Reilly (5) and to John Hegarty (18) respectively. Many thanks to Kevin Clarke at Oysters Restaurant for again sponsoring the competition the fifth occasion he has done so.

Charlies Bar Strabane
The inaugural running of the Charlies Bar Open stableford took place last Thursday with in excess of 100 cards being taken out on another fine day for golfing. The winner was Keith Patterson (7) with 41pts, a one under par second nine that included an eagle three at the par five 10th hole set up his win. Neil Conroy (13) was the runner up three points of the winners pace with 38pts with Oliver Creswell (12) in third, again on 38pts, the gross on this occasion went to Peter Doherty (5) with 31 gross points.

Habinteg Team Scramble
31 teams took part in last Fridays Habinteg Housing Association teams scramble, again played in beautiful conditions, the winners were a team from Portsalon Golf Club – Sean McCormack, Johnny Strain, Brian O’Reilly and Cathal Toland with 56 nett, the runners up were Ben Corry, Eamon McCay, Ciaran Duffy, and George McCay with 56.9 nett.  The best mixed team were Denis Porter, Kevin Keegan, Maurice McGettigan and Monica McGettigan, the top all ladies team were Norma Brogan, Anne Sharkey, Dympna Doherty and Adeline Shiels.

Monday Open
This week’s Monday Open went to visiting player Brendan Gallagher (16) with 39pts, a fantastic 25pts being recorded on the back nine to give him the win on break of tie from young club starlet Conor Byrne (8) with Shay Callaghan (7) third with 37 pts, Peter Doherty (5) again took the gross this time with 32 gross points.

Ladies Golf
Last week’s Ladies event was the Curtis Cup and went the way of early morning starter Shauna Stewart (13) with 37pts, the categories went to Lady Captain Anne Sharkey (19) and to Geraldine Masterson with 34pts.

16 pairs took part in last Wednesday’s mixed competition with Adeline Shiels & Nigel Houston the winners with 35 pts over the 15 holes in play. The runners up were Annette Patton and Liam McGinley with 33 pt, third went to Mary and Noel McCrory with 32pts.

In Club representative golf, this week there were mixed fortunes for our teams, on a positive note our Irish Mixed Foursomes have qualified for the first matchplay stage, where they will meet Sunday’s hosts and leading qualifiers Newtownstewart G.C., the date and venue are yet to be decided.
Mark Sharkey’s Ulster Fourball side have advanced to the second round with a win overall against Armagh G.C. also on Sunday past, trailing by four matches to one from the away leg they reversed that score line at home and ran out the winner by a narrow margin of 5 holes.
Mark Brolly’s Ulster Cup team however did not fare so well, having held a 5-2 first leg score line in their favour they went down 6.5-0.5 at Templepatrick G.C. although it was much closer than the result would suggest as they lost no fewer than 3 matches on the final green.
Declan Doherty and his Conway Cup team had an excellent first leg win at Aughnacloy G.C taking a 10-6 advantage into the home leg this Sunday.
Well done also to the clubs Jimmy Carroll team who made the first step in defending their All –Ireland crown in this event by qualifying comfortably in first place at the recent qualification day at Ballybofey golf club recently.

This week’s winner of the £50 bar credit draw was Shane McLaughlin.

Stephen wins Sports Centre Open

Once again trying weather conditions were encountered by Saturday’s golfers for the Sports Centre Open, which was played from the blue tees. The incessant rain that prevailed throughout the day settled in from mid-morning and never relented making good scoring almost impossible. Best to handle the conditions was Stephen Donaghey (12) who has been having a fine early season as he continues to improve his game rapidly, Stephen’s total of 39pts was highly unlikely to have been matched, nineteen to the turn and a very steady inward nine registering another twenty and a card that featured two birdie two’s at the 7th & 12th holes saw him take top spot in this long established competition. Runner up was early morning starter Pat McGuigan (21) with an excellent 38pts total despite a nervy finish that saw a few extra points get away from him, nevertheless a fine total on the day. Third place went to Mark McCrea (10) with 37pts, again out early in slightly more favourable conditions, Mark recorded a best of the day 22pts for his second nine.  Paul Kavanagh (22) took fourth nett also with 37pts, with Eddie McCrea (17) taking fifth, one of six players to score 36pts.  Conal Cooke(2) took the gross prize with a three over par round of 33 gross points, the nines were claimed by Michael Houston (14) with 21pts to the turn and Nicky Patton (5) who had 19pts for his back nine, despite the awful conditions 156 players in total entered the event.

TOPAZ OPEN
The first Thursday Open of the new season was played on Thursday last with relative newcomer Rodney Dolan (25) topping the leaderboard with 39pts, again the conditions had dictated that good scoring would be at a premium, the runner up was Marty McDermott (4) with 37pts just getting the better of Neil Conroy (13) on countback, Jordan Arthur (6) took his first gross prize in some time with 30 gross points.

Our Pearce Purcell team, under the captaincy of Paddy O’Kane, narrowly missed out on qualification at Dunfanaghy Golf Club on Sunday despite a good showing by all the pairs on the more difficult second nine, the team only missed out by a single shot overall.

Mark Sharkey’s Ulster-Fourball team are still in with a strong shout after their first leg tie with Armagh Golf club also on Sunday past, they unluckily went down by four matches to one at the away venue, Paul Kavanagh & Brian Forrester securing what could be a vital win for Strabane, the second leg is this coming Sunday at 12 noon.

Ladies Golf
Margaret Wolfe (35) has been a regular winner in mixed foursomes competitions in recent weeks, but last Tuesday she did it all on her own to take the ladies event the “Camus Cup” in fine style, an eye-catching 63 nett giving her a comfortable seven shot win over her nearest challenger, Lady Captain Anne Sharkey(19) who took category one with 70 nett, category two was claimed Geraldine McCrory (31) with 72 nett.

Last weeks mixed greensomes was played over 15 holes with Heather Mitchell and Aidan Boyle the winners with 34pts, Bernie O’Kane and Dr Ciaran Kelly were runners up with 33 pts and Lauren Patton and Conor Sharkey took third with 32 pts.

Best wishes to our Irish Mixed Foursomes team who are at Newtownstewart Golf club this coming Sunday for the qualifying competition there.

The winner of this weeks £50 bar credit draw was Lauren Patton.
There is a night at the races planned by The Lifford Players in the clubhouse on Friday 27th May everyone is most welcome to come along and show your support.

Fixtures:
Thursday 12th May – Charlies Bar Open
Friday 13th May – Habinteg Housing Association team scramble – Time-sheet in operation

Monday 16th May – Monday Open
Tuesday 17th May – Georgina Gregg – Ladies.

Finally this week on a particularly sad note, on Saturday past, Strabane Golf club lost one of its most loved and respected members as we learned of the death of our former President Jimmy Duncan. Jimmy had been ill for a few weeks with serious heart trouble but after major surgery we had all hoped he was on the road to recovery but, alas, this was not to be as he had suffered a major setback early last week and sadly passed away on Saturday afternoon. Some members of our club will never be forgotten and Jimmy Duncan certainly fits into this category, an endless worker in every task he undertook. He was delighted to be asked to become club president in 2008, a task he undertook in his own humble fashion, going to and attending as many matches and functions as possible and always there when called upon, he was the convenor of our Monday Club teams event where he had succeeded John Christy.  Jimmy was a regular here on Friday nights where he assisted Declan Doherty with our very successful punters club, another role he enjoyed immensely. Maybe above all Jimmy Duncan was one of life’s true gentlemen, a friend to everyone with whom he encountered, no one ever had a bad word to say about him, he was truly a wonderful character and friend to so many. Our most sincere condolences are extended to Jimmy’s wife Marie and his entire family circle on his passing, the fairways of Strabane Golf club will be never be the same without Jimmy’s famous shining “Jimmy-mobile” Golf buggy, may he rest in peace. Jimmy was layed to his rest on Tuesday which would have been the occasion of his 77th birthday.

Club News – 3rd May 2016

Conor wins “Sweeno McGinty’s Open”
The inaugural running of the Sweeno McGinty’s Bar Open stableford was held at Strabane on Saturday, the winner was 5 handicapper Conor Sharkey who rediscovered a bit of form to take the win posting an early total of 39pts that was never matched for the remainder of the day. Conditions were breezy throughout with a few extremely heavy hail showers early on leaving decent scores at a premium, this added to the lightning fast greens and near impossible pin placement on the 18th the three players that did manage to beat par on the day had to play extremely well to do so. Conor started in fine fashion with an opening birdie three but then uncharacteristically dropped five shots over the next three holes, however he steadied the ship to birdie the sixth hole and never looked back shooting 12 consecutive pars to top the leader-board. The runner up on the day just one point behind was Stephen Donaghey (13) a great run saw him score 22pts for the back nine and only a bogey at the final hole saw him miss out on top spot. Third went to last Saturday’s winner, Paddy O’Kane (8), who is definitely one to watch at present a fine second nine of 21pts catapulted him through the field, fourth place went to the ever improving Mickey Arnold (16) the best of four players with 36pts, Damian McGranaghan (7) took the final nett prize also with 36pts, Nicky Patton (6) took the gross prize with 30 gross pts with the nines going to Oliver McNally (18) with 21 pts for the outward nine and Peter Etherson (21) with 21pts for the inward nine. The presentation for this and other events held in April will take place in the clubhouse this Friday evening at 8-30pm sharp.

Tennents Bank Holiday Open
Monday’s Bank Holiday Open saw no let-up in the recent wet & windy conditions with only the winner John McMenamin (18) managing to break par on the day returning an excellent 38pts, this was a notable double for John who on the previous night, with his daughter, danced his way to success in the Strictly weekend at the Fir Trees hotel.  The runner up on Monday was young Patrick McGranaghan (13) who continues to improve, his total of 36pts was two in front of Dermot Corry(16) in third, with the gross going to Mark McColgan(6) with 26 gross pts. This competition was reduction only with the C.S.S. going to 33pts reflecting the difficulties faced on the day.

Thursday Club Final Day
This year’s Thursday Club final day was held at Donegal Golf club at Murvagh with 75 players travelling in total. Again the conditions were far from ideal in a breezy biting cold morning and afternoon. Declan Doherty (12) however put all of this aside to return an eye catching 42 pts a great score over the links course, the runner up was Pascal McGillion (24) with a very steady 39pts with Kevin Gallagher (17) third with 38pts just getting the better of Kevin McGinley (11) on countback, Freddie Patterson (8) took fifth with 37 pts. In total there were 25 nett prizes, only two 2’s were recorded on the day one to Thursday club visitor Brian Kelly and to Liam Patton who eagled the par 4- 17th hole to scoop the entire Thursday Club two’s fund pot. Many thanks to Donegal Golf club for the great hospitality shown to our party, we look forward to the Captains Outing back there on Saturday 1st Oct.

Well done to Aidan Boyle and his Jimmy Bruen team who qualified for the matchplay stages of that G.U.I. event on Sunday at Letterkenny G.C. they will now meet Ballybofey back at Letterkenny Golf Club in the coming weeks. Best wishes to Mark Sharkey and his Ulster Fourball side who are in action in Armagh this coming Sunday, and to Paddy O’Kane and his Pierce Purcell team who are in Newtownstewart at their qualifying event also on Sunday.

Ladies Golf
The ladies first open of the season was kindly sponsored by Mark James Menswear, there was a relatively good turnout again in tough conditions, the winner was Adeline Shiels (24)with 37pts just getting the better of Mary McCrory (30) on countback, third place went to Heather Mitchell (21) with 36pts with the gross going to Mandy Coyne (7),the category winners were Lisa Patton, Rosemary Wilson and Annette Patton with the nines prizes going to Margaret Wolfe and Carole McFeeters. Only one “2” was recorded this by Lisa Patton at the 16th hole.

The mixed foursomes is now underway with last week’s winners being declared as Margaret Wolfe and Gerry Casey with 29pts over the 13 holes in play, the runners up were Patricia and Dr Ciaran Kelly also with 29 pts with Debbie McDaid and Donal Cairns third with 27pts.
