Club Notes – 27th April 2016

Local postman Paddy O’Kane (10) delivered the goods in last Saturdays Strabane Electric’s Stableford played for the first time this year from the blue markers. It was a strange day for scoring with conditions worsening as the day progressed however almost all the prize winners played late in the evening in without doubt the toughest elements of the day. Paddy reached the turn with a moderate 18pts but with three birdies on the inward nine he amassed a fine total of 22pts giving him a winning total of 40pts, just getting the better of his playing partner on the day John Maxwell (10) who had matching 9’s of 20pts.  John’s total was helped greatly by converting three opportunities for 2’s at the second, the eighth and the twelfth holes no mean feat in itself but a run of four consecutive bogies from the 13th hole saw him having to settle for the runners up spot. John Langan (14) was also one of the late starters and his return of 37pts was good enough for third place a good inward nine of 21pts getting him in just in front of Gary King (14) who was fourth with the same total, Freddie Patterson (8) has been showing major signs of a return to the golf he is capable of in recent months and he took fifth place with 36pts, the gross went to Fred McGavigan (34) with 32 gross pts, the nines went to Eugene Patton (24) for the outward nine and to Stephen Donaghey (13) with a similar total for the inward nine.
The presentation for this and other competitions held in April will be made in the clubhouse on Friday 6th May at 8pm. Many congratulations to Kevin Neeson who secured the first hole in one of the new season holing out at the par three 12th Hole with the perfect 8 iron shot securing himself a beautiful “Boss Hole in One Club” wrist watch.

Monday Teams
The Monday Club teams event concluded on Monday past with nine teams participating, the winners on the day were club President Jim Arbuckle, Pascal McGillion, Martin Finlay and Gerry Quinn with 95 pts, the runners up were Hugo McCusker, Eugene Patton, John Shields and Jimmy Henderson with 91pts, with Chris McDermott, Kevin Keegan, Charlie Patton and Oliver McNally in third with 90pts.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery were sent to Monday Club co-ordinator Jimmy Duncan.

The final weeks play for the Thursday Club took place last week also, Damian McGranaghan (7) was the winner with 37.75 nett, second place went to Chris McDermott (12) with 36.25 nett and third went to Declan Lynch(10) with 36 nett. Kevin Heffernan took the Golfer of the Year title finishing on 168pts for the campaign, Foncie McNally was the runner up with 143 pts whilst Jim Potts slipped into third place with a total of 103 pts. The “King of the 2’s” title was won in resounding fashion by Freddie Patterson with a total of eleven.
All roads lead to Donegal Golf Club this week for the final day with the presentation of prizes back at Strabane at 8.30pm, there will be several spot prizes for those in attendance at the presentation.

Ulster Cup
Mark Brolly’s Ulster Cup team were in first round action on Sunday and secured a 5-2 home win over Templepatrick  Golf club, there were some excellent performances on the day but a lot of work still has to be done with the away leg in two weeks time in the away leg

Ladies Golf
The ladies team bowed out of the Revive Action Matchplay Betterball competition losing out 3-2 to close neighbours Ballybofey, a better result however was secured by Catherine Neeson’s Intermediate Cup team who have built up a 4-1 lead over Kilrea ladies after the home leg on Sunday past.

Club Notes – 19th April 2016

Eamon McCay (20) was seeing things clearly in the Gormley Opticians Open Stableford posting his best score for some time, 41pts, in breezy but dry conditions to win the event narrowly from Cathal Patton (6) on break of tie. Eamon reached the turn with a decent total of 19pts but a blistering inward nine of 22pts saw the local businessman top the leader board and claim a welcome win for the lefthander. Great credit to the runner up who has returned from a serious leg injury in the past year, Patton recorded 20pts for his first nine and an excellent level par second nine also gave him a total of 41pts. Third place went to Joe Doherty (19)with 39pts playing his best singles golf for some time he will regret an ugly double bogey 5 at the par three 16th hole which scuppered his chances somewhat of a higher placed finish, fourth spot went to John McCallion (19) who continues to impress this season despite losing several shots on his handicap, fifth went to Mark Sharkey (20) also with 39pts, the gross on the day went to Conal Cooke(2) with a level par round of 36 gross pts, the nines were claimed by Noel O’Kane (25) with 23pts for the first nine and Peter Doherty (6)with 21pts for the second nine, the presentation date for this and other April competitions will be posted on the noticeboard this weekend.

Thursday Club week 13
18 holes were possible for last week’s Thursday club and several excellent scores were recorded in calm conditions, with placing on the fairways and lift clean & drop in the semi-roughs the automatically set C.S.S. may have to be looked at in greater detail. The day’s best return was recorded by Brian Haughey (12) with a blistering 44.5 Nett pts which was an excellent gross 72, this win added to Brian’s recent hole in one his first ever at the par three 5th hole at Portsalon Golf Club, many congratulation on that, Dr Ciaran Kelly (12) was the runner up on Thursday with 41.75 Nett with Neil Conroy (14) in third place with 41pts Nett. Kevin Heffernan would seem to have the golfer of the year accolade in the bag as he extended his lead to 17pts from Foncie McNally with just one week to go. Freddie Patterson has secured the “King of the 2’s” title for the year with eleven recorded deuces, an excellent total. The timesheet for the final day is available on the noticeboard players are asked to leave in good time as there are currently ongoing roadworks outside Ballybofey that may cause severe delays.

Monday Club
Next Monday is also the final day for the popular Monday team’s competition with a meal available for members at 6pm at the clubhouse. The most recent winners were Aidan Coyle, Dermott Corry, Michael Baldrick, and Niall Coulter with 103.5 nett, the clear winners from Kevin Gallagher , Stewart McFeeters,  Liam McCool and Pat McGuigan who had 97.25 nett.
Get well soon wishes are extended to the competition co-ordinator Jimmy Duncan who is currently in hospital with serious health problems, thankfully Jimmy is rallying well and we sincerely hope his recovery is a rapid one.

Fred Daly
Well done to our young Fred Daly team who recorded a great win at the weekend over Kilymoon Golf Club boys, they narrowly lost out by three matches to two at Killymoon on Saturday, and then completed the task in hand on Sunday at home winning three matches and halving the other two ties.
