BUSY OPENING WEEK AT STRABANE GOLF CLUB

The new golfing season got underway last weekend at Strabane Golf Club with a busy opening weekend. Saturdays event was the traditional season opener The John Kelly Stableford, named in memory of one of the clubs greatest ever golfers. The best return of the day was recorded by Martin Gormley (14) with 40pts in extremely testing conditions, although thankfully we did well to miss the worst of “Storm Katie” she sent a gentle reminder around 2pm in the afternoon when winds and hail battered the course for a 15 minute spell resulting in many players retiring early with badly twisted umbrella’s to the comfort of the clubhouse, Martin Gormley however prevailed through it to top the leader-board from a shot from the next four players, Kevin Heffernan (25) has been improving rapidly and it was no surprise when he posted 39pts with 24 of those coming in the inward nine to take the runners up position, Noel McCrory(16) was an early starter and he posted 39pts also to take third, on break of tie from Franke Gallagher (9) with Declan Doherty (18) in fifth also on the same total, the gross went to Fred McGavigan (4) with a three over par round of 33 gross pts, the nines went to Don Callan (22) who took the opening nine and to Kevin Gallagher who was best on the return nine, in total 155 cards were taken out on the day.

Thursday Club week 10

Freddie Patterson seems to have the “King of the Two’s title in the bag currently on ten and four clear of his nearest rival.

Good Friday Sweep
The final competition played of the winter tees was held on Good Friday and resulted in a win for relative newcomer John McCallion (25) with an excellent total of 42pts and two clear from the runner up Dermott Corry (16) with 40 pts John Doherty took third with 39 pts and Nicky Patton the gross with 32 gross pts.

SUPER-VALU SPRING LEAGUE CONCLUDES

The weather affected Super-Valu Spring League concluded on Sunday past with only five weeks out of the scheduled eight weeks being played due to the adverse conditions this Winter season.
The winners were the very experienced quartet “2 up 2 down” who finished with two very strong showings in the final weeks to take the spoils, a best of the day 51pts in the final weeks scramble event seeing them home by 2 points overall. The winning team members were Pat McAneny, Denis Porter, Joe Doherty and George Turner.  The runners up were “No Hope” who certainly had hope going in to the final weeks play as they led by two points at the summit and were four clear of the eventual winners, however a pretty average round by their own standards recording 45 pts saw them only take second place overall, the team were Declan Breslin, Michael Arnold, Raymond Arnold and Kieran McAleer. Third place went to “Last Minute” with 47pts on Sunday and a grand total of 310 pts overall, the team members were John Doherty, Declan Doherty, John Blee, and Francy Conwell.
