Club Notes – 28th April 2015

Play on Saturday past was from the blue tees, that fact added to the cold northerly wind that prevailed for the entire day made good scoring particularly difficult. Last season’s Golfer of the Year runner up Donal Cairns(14) braved the elements best of all however to post an excellent 39pts late in the day, Donal got to the turn with a very steady 18pts and came home with a further 21pts which included a very strong finish to take the day’s top prize. The runner up was Matt Keyes(20) who returned to some form with an excellent 38 pts, with early leader, veteran Jimmy Henderson (26) in third, a further point back with 37 pts, Keith Patterson (5) was his usual consistent self to take fourth also with 37pts which was only four over par for the day, Aidan Coyle(14) took fifth with a steady 36pts with the gross going to Patrick Kennedy (3) with 33 gross pts, the nines went to Gary Duffy and Kevin McChrystal. The presentation for this event is on Sunday 10th May at 8.30pm.

Twenty eight teams took part in the Lady Captains fundraiser team classic on Sunday which was to raise funds for on course toilet facilities. The winners were Denis Porter, Kevin Keegan, Joe Doherty and George Turner, a team who have more or less dominated this format in recent years and again were the clear winners by a margin of three points with a score of 105. The runners up were Rory McColgan, Aidy McDermott, Raymond McDermott and Gerry McColgan with 102 pts, the lady teams turned out in great numbers for the event and it was pleasing to see one of their quartets finishing in third place with 97pts, the Lady Captain Monica, Geraldine McCrory, Heather Mitchell and Mary Casey playing great golf on the day. There was also a prize for the best all ladies team and this went to Caroline Connolly, Catherine Connolly, Carole McFeeters and Imelda Doherty with 93pts.

It was with much regret this week that we learned of the death of one of the Ladies branches most colourful characters Aileen Shortt who was 97 years old. A very vibrant character even in her later years and she still loved to play her few holes of golf when possible.  Ms Shortt was the life and soul at most of the ladies nights out at the club, she will be fondly remembered by all who knew her and our sincere condolences are sent to her family. There is a Memorial Service at Melmount Chapel for Aileen at 2pm this Saturday 2nd May.
