MARC EYES UP TOP SPOT IN GORMLEYS OPTICIANS OPEN.

Marc Brolly (11) saw his way to first place in Saturdays Gormley’s Opticians Open Stableford event that attracted a sizeable entry of 180 players, and although a beautiful spring day, the south-easterly wind swirling on the course throughout the duration made good scoring difficult. As a result Marc’s return of 39pts was good enough to lead a tightly bunched field. The runner up playing in his first competition in some time was Damian Roarty (9) who only missed out on top spot on break of tie. Third went to George Turner (28) with a good total of 38pts with Brian Brolly (8) 38pts, taking fourth to add a father and son element to the leader board, Ciaran Doherty took the final nett prize, the best of a few 37pts. Keith Patterson (6) took Saturday’s gross prize with an excellent four over par total that converted to 32 gross points, with the nines going to Gerry Glover(18) and to Jimmy Duncan(28).

Thursday Club
Last Thursday was the penultimate home outing for the popular Thursday club with 65 cards being taken out. This week’s winner was Pat McGuigan(20)with 39pts, with Rory Doherty the runner up with 37.75 nett and Colin mcCafferty in third with 37pts, a non Thursday club members prize went to Conal Cooke (1) with 39pts. This Thursday is the final home day with a few issues to be decided, the golfer of the year title is between Foncie McNally on 143 pts and Denis Porter on 140 pts, with the king of the two’s title also close, Tommy Forbes leads on 8 from Denis Porter and Brian Haughey both on 7.  The timesheet is posted for the final day at Donegal Golf Club on Thursday 30th April, non Thursday club members are welcome to play on the day with the entry £35 which includes golf, three course meal and visitors prize.

In inter club representative golf last weekend brought mixed fortunes with Declan Devine’s Ulster Cup team going out at the first hurdle losing out to near neighbours City of Derry despite getting two matches at the Derry Venue, they lost three of Sundays ties at Strabane to lose out by 8-6 overall. Better news however for Pat McAneny’s Ulster-Fourball players as they came from 4-1 down to take the home leg 5-0 against City of Belfast with a fine team performance, they now meet Massereene Golf Club in the next round.

Ladies Golf
Last week’s ladies competition was the Daily Mail Foursomes event which went to the pairing of Betty Kelly and Maura McBeth with 39pts four clear of their nearest challengers Mary McCrory and Geraldine McCrory. Tickets for the upcoming Red Hurley and Gary McEvoy double bill on Saturday 16th May remain on sale at the club, members and friends intending to go are asked to purchase or reserve your tickets as soon as possible, ticket sales are not as good as hoped for and a decision whether this will go ahead or not will be made next week depending on sales or bookings!
