NEW SEASON SWINGS IN AT STRABANE

The new golfing season officially swung in to action on Saturday at Strabane in the traditional opener the John Kelly stableford with conditions anything but spring like. The stiff north easterly breeze, and frequent heavy showers, leaving good scoring extremely difficult, resulting in only two players either beating or equalling par on a difficult day. The winner was Terry Doherty (13) with an excellent 38 pts despite a careless blank hole at the last, Terry had got to the turn with a solid 20 pts on his card and maintained a good steady run on the inward nine helped by a good 4pts with birdie at the 13th hole to set up his two shot win from the runner up Ronnie Wiley (12) who recovered from a poor six at the 17th hole to secure a closing birdie three at the last to secure the runners up berth. Last year’s Golfer of the Year runner up Donal Cairns started where he left off last season to post 35pts and third place just ahead of Martin Patton (12) and Paul McGill (6) both with the same total and taking fourth and fifth places respectively. The gross went to Conal Cooke (1) with a total of 73 that transferred to 32pts, a couple of birdie two’s at the 2nd & 7th holes setting him up nicely.
The nines went to Odran McGettigan(25) first nine, and the ever improving Kevin Heffernan (27) both with 21pts.

Thursday Club week 11
Fifty players took part in last week’s Thursday Club event over 16 holes with a familiar look to the leader board despite the reduction in points handicapping system. First was Denis Porter (11) with 32.5 nett, second was Charlie Patton (16) with 32 nett and Foncie McNally (13) with 31.5 nett. Two non Thursday club members made the best returns of the day, Declan Lynch (12) had 38 pts with Adrian Coyle (14) on 37 pts, both taking prizes. The Golfer of the Season event looks like a two horse race between Denis and Foncie with the latter on 114pts and the former on 105pts. The last three weeks will be 18 holes and will be qualifying from the yellow markers. The final day is set for Donegal Golf Club on Thursday 30th April, members should note that entry must be paid for weeks the course has been closed.

Monday Club
The weather conditions hadn’t improved too much for the Monday club team event this week with only seven teams participating, the winners were Kevin Gallagher, Stewart McFeeters, Liam McCool and Pat McGuigan with 99 pts nett. The runners up were Rory McColgan, Dermott Corry, Kevin McGinley and Terence McDermott with 96.25 nett. There is no Monday club on Easter Monday and the final day is set for Monday 27th April.

Captain’s Drive in.
The new Captains and President’s celebrated the onset of their official season on Sunday past with the traditional Drive in.  Twenty seven pairs played in the ensuing greensomes event with the pairing of Annette Patton and Denis Porter not for the first time taking the honours, this time with 23 pts over the 10 holes in play. The runners up were Carmel McElwee and Freddie Patterson  on the same total with Margaret Wolfe and Declan Lynch in third with 22 pts.
