WINTER CUP SEMI-FINALS UP FOR DECISION
After last Sunday’s play in the Sperrin Springs Leo Kavanagh Memorial Winter Cup the four semi-final pairings have now been identified. The top qualifiers were surprise packets John McCallion & Rodney Dolan who came through the qualifying unscathed winning all their matches, the only duo to do so, they finished top in their section on 21pts and they will meet the highest scoring non- section winners, Jim Potts and Declan Doherty, this should be a close contest that is very hard to call. The other semi-final will see the low handicap pairing of Peter Doherty and Franke Gallagher take on Oliver Creswell and Joe Kennedy, the latter will receive quite a few shots and how they are used will go a long way to deciding the eventual outcome of this one. The other pairings that are left will play a two week aggregate better-ball sweep, the presentation is provisionally set for Sunday 6th December at 7pm.

The winter mats will be introduced on the course on Monday 7th December!

Recent Saturday competitions have been badly hit by the worsening weather conditions that late Autumn has brought with much reduced entry sheets.  Saturday 7th November saw a great score posted by Seamus Friel who had saw his handicap soar in recent years his return of 45 pts over 15 holes was a flashback to what he is capable of and was a fine total indeed, Seamus ran out the winner by five shots from Denis Porter the runner up with an excellent 40 pts.
Saturday 14th November saw Mark Gillespie top the leaderboard with 31 pts for 15 holes with Brian Cairns the runner up with 30 pts.
Last week’s play was over 13 holes and saw Kevin Keegan run out the winner with 32pts with William Potts the runner up with 30pts and Liam Patton third with 29pts.

The Thursday Club has now 11 weeks completed, the most recent winner was Kevin Gallagher with 26 pts for the eleven holes in play, Kevin Heffernan was the runner up with 25 pts with Damien McGranaghan third with 24 pts.
The Golfer of the Year section has four weeks to run and sees Chris McDermott lead by a narrow margin from Foncie McNally and Oliver McNally. The “King of the Twos” title is currently led by Freddie Patterson and Shane McLaughlin both on four.

Monday Club
This week’s Monday club saw Foncie McNally, Gerry Quinn, Paul McNally and Seamus McPhilemy in first place with 64.75 nett.  Liam Patton, Shane McLaughlin, Ronnie Wiley and Clark Klam were the runners up with 63.25 nett.

The Last Man Standing competition is really heating up with only three entrants left in contention for the £1000 first prize, good luck to Willie Coyle, Eddie Patton and Mark Henderson the only survivors from an initial entry of 450!

Last week’s £50 bar tab winner was Monica Patton.
This Friday is the last week to save in the Punters Club 2015, the cheques will be payable the following week, Friday 4th December, with the punters draw at 8pm 4th December.
A full festive programme schedule is available at the club including party nights and entertainment and also on the clubs website and facebook page.
The club’s AGM is on Wednesday 16th December 8pm.

TRIPLE CROWN FOR FRED

On many occasions all club golfers have days they would just rather forget but Saturday’s Claims Assist Open, is a day four handicap player Fred McGavigan will remember for all the right reasons when he bagged himself a fantastic triple crown of golfing memories. It seemed maybe just one of those other days after he had completed his first hole with a messy bogey five but the drama was all ahead of him as he firstly played a knockdown seven iron onto the green and rolled it straight into the hole for a hole in one to start his great day, birdies followed at the 4th  5th  6th and 7th holes to get him to the turn in 5 under gross and a spectacular 25pts for the outward nine, pars followed at the next four holes before a few late dropped shots including bogies at the final two holes, however Fred had done enough and his final total of 67 equalled a competition winning total of 42pts, and with it, the much sought Golfer of the Year title which he had trailed at the onset by eight points from the eventual runner up Nicky Patton. In fairness few would argue that Fred hasn’t deserve that title as his level of consistency this season has been remarkable for all the open events, not just Saturday competitions, on which the Golfer of the Year title is decided. Saturday’s runner up in the Claims Assist Insurance Services event was Fred’s playing partner Stephen McCay (6) who came home in level par for the second nine for a total of 41pts, third was relative newcomer to the game Neil Holmes (25) who played his best golf to date returning 40pts despite three blank holes, the consistent John Maxwell (10) saw his handicap go to single figures for the first time also returning 40pts,with Gerry Casey (16) in fifth another player with 40pts. Saturdays gross went to Conal Cooke (1) with a fine one under total of 37 pts, Eugene Patton (24) took the first nine with an eye-catching 25 pts and Jim Potts(18) the second nine with 20pts.
Congratulations also to Martin McCallion who also scored a hole in one at the 7th hole in Saturdays claims assist Open hitting the perfect 7 iron shot.

Thursday Club
Week 3 of the Thursday club went to Rory Doherty(12) with a good 39pts in tricky conditions, the runner up was Declan McDonnell (9) with 38pts with Foncie McNally (15) third with 37pts.
This week’s competition is over 18 holes but is non-qualifying.

Monday Club
There were 9 teams for last week’s Monday club team event, the winners were Jim Arbuckle, Pascal McGillian, Foncie McNally & Jim Duncan with 100pts nett, the runners up were Charlie Patton, Oliver McNally, Chris McDermott and Seamus McPhilemy with 98.5 nett.

In inter club golf this week Strabane lost out to Castlehume G.C. in the Phair Cup final. The home side had it all to do after a poor away performance where they suffered a very heavy defeat, despite this the team gave it a great go leading comfortably through the turn in the three opening ties, but when team Captain Kieran Martin and Kevin Neeson surrendered the opening nine the match was over and play was halted for the day.

Ladies Golf
The Ladies Season is also rapidly drawing to a close with next week’s Scramble the final Tuesday before the Autumn and Winter season kicks in. Last week’s competition was the rearranged Breast Cancer charity event and was won by Margaret Wolfe (36) with 32 pts for the 15 holes in play, the category winners were Lorna Duffy (21) with 29 pts the third consecutive week for Lorna to feature and to Maura McBeth (36) with 28pts.

The final mixed event of the season was played on Sunday past with the Killyhelvin Hotel Mr & Mrs Greensomes, this went to Caroline & Frankie Connolly with 38pts for the 16 holes, retaining the title the pair won last year, the runners up were Lady Secretary and Club Captain, Maeve & Pat Corry with 36pts, with Lady Captain Monica McGettigan & her husband Maurice third with 35pts. In the subsidiary competition Mandy Coyne partnered Denis Porter to the win with 35 pts with Mary Duffy & Francie Devine the runners up with 34 pts.

The Worcester Cup final was played last Friday evening and saw Margaret & Nicky Wolfe lift the trophy in a great encounter with Carmel McElwee and Senan Roarty the match was eventually decided at the final hole.

Neil Conroy has won this year’s Lawson Cup defeating Stephen Alexander in the final.  The Gallagher Memorial Trophy will be decided between Conor Meehan & Declan Lynch whilst in the Jones Cup, Caolan Crawford awaits his opponent it will either be Eoin O’Neill or Ciaran Duffy.

The Captains Outing is being played this Saturday at Portsalon Golf Club with approximately 125 members making the trip, the forecast is very favourable and a great days golf is anticipated.  The presentation will take place at around 9pm at Strabane with music later with Conor McGinty who appeared on X-Factor’s bootcamp show last week.

Tickets for the Club Dinner are now on sale priced at a very reasonable £20, music on the night with the fantastic “Lee Roy Brown Band”.

Rory Doherty’s luck seems to be in as he again won the £50 bar credit draw.

There are only 44 left in Last Man Standing with a further 20 exiting the competition after last week’s fixtures, in total 400 have now gone out in just three weeks!

Club News – 22nd September 2015

LINDSAY WINS FIRST SENIOR SCRATCH CUP

North-West G.C. One handicapper James Lindsay captured his first ever senior scratch cup title when he lifted the Frylite Ltd sponsored event at Strabane on Sunday past in a thrilling finish that saw a three way play-off to decide the final destination of this year’s trophy. Rainy conditions that prevailed for almost the entire day had made good scoring difficult with the three players in final contention James Lindsay(North-West), Enda Kennedy (Rosapenna) and Kealan Quigg (City of Derry, all tying on a two round total of 143 which was an aggregate of +5. With the light fading rapidly the organisers quickly gathered the trio on the first tee for the deciding sudden death holes, all three players managed par at the first of these with all three attacking looking for the exclusive birdie, at the par three 2nd, all three players played loose tee shots, Lindsay well short at the front, Kennedy in the right hand bunker and Quigg in all sorts of bother on the left side with very little green to aim at, Lindsay was first to play and delivered an immaculate low running chip to three feet, Keelan Quigg tried to play a deft flop shot that just landed short and his ball came back off the side of the green, Enda Kennedy had a difficult shot with the wet sand hard to negotiate and he landed 15 feet short of the pin, Quigg had a valiant attempt at his par hitting the back of the hole with his chip but the pace saw it pop up and just stay out, ten times winner Enda Kennedy then held his nerve to stroke home a tremendous putt to leave two players still in it. Kennedy had the honour at the par 4 -18th hole, choosing to play up the 1st fairway to seek a better angle for his second, he didn’t get far enough right and left himself somewhat blocked out with the green not an option from his position, and with Lindsay driving 15 yards past the days longest drive at that hole all day he was odds on favourite again, especially when the Rosapenna player left his resulting chip from right of the green  10 feet short. James who is resident in Eglington Co. Derry grabbed his chance leaving his 2nd shot 6 feet away and with two for the title at last he got over the line after 5 previous scratch cup play-off losses and one break of tie runner up spot much to the young man’s delight. James a golf scholarship student at Jordanstown University, and also a member at City of Derry Golf club thanked all the organisers, greens-staff and especially his playing partners on the day for the wonderful sporting manner in which the tournament was played in his winner’s speech saying how grateful he was to finally win a Scratch Cup especially after so many previous disappointments, it will surely be the first of many! Narrowly missing out on a place in the play-off was young Jack Madden, who was the defending champion he finished on 144 to take the overall nett prize, with Strabane’s Peter Doherty the runner up in this category from Nicky Patton in third.

Medicare Open Stableford
Last Saturday’s event attracted a large entry with 160 players taking out cards for the season’s last Blue Markers event, thankfully it was played in decent weather conditions. The winner was Billy “Box” Doherty (14) with a great score of 41pts despite registering two blank holes on the outward nine at the 5th and 9th holes, this aside Billy still got to the turn with 20pts with birdies at the 3rd and the 6th holes, and despite a nervy finish he won overall by a single point from Francie Devine (13) the runner-up finishing with closing bogies at the final two holes where a par would have been good enough. Paul O’Reilly runner up the previous Saturday finished third this time with 38pts with veteran Hugo McCusker (11) still playing great golf and taking fourth here also with 38pts, fifth went to Andrew Connolly (9) with 37pts with Paddy Kennedy (3) winning the gross with 34 gross pts, the nines prizes went to Club Captain Pat Corry (11) with 20pts for the outward nine and to James Harron (10) with 21pts for the inward nine. The presentation for this and other recent competitions is this coming Sunday 27th September at 7.30pm.

Thursday Club week 2
Last week’s Thursday club again attracted a large field with 70 players competing, this week’s winner was Hugo McCusker (12) with 41pts, the runner up was Liam McGinley (20) with 40pts and Declan McDonnell (9) in third also with 40pts.The winning non Thursday club member was Aiden O’Neill (19) with a fine total of 41pts. New members are still very welcome to join.

Inter-Club Golf
Congratulations to Sean MacIntyre and his Lawson Cup team who took the overall title in that Tyrone & Fermanagh event after getting the necessary points in their away leg with Castlehume G.C. having already built up an impressive lead in the home leg a fortnight ago. Well done also to Freddie Patterson and his Donegal Junior League team who overturned a 6-1 away leg deficit to advance to this year’s final, Paddy McCrossan the hero firstly winning his own match at the 19th hole and then the overall play-off tie at the 20th hole.

Ladies Golf
The ladies season is also rapidly drawing to a close with just two rescheduled events left on the calendar both of which will be played over 15 holes. Last week’s winner was the fast improving Caren Corry (34) with an excellent round of 42pts, in category one Lorna Duffy (21) followed up her win last week with another prize winning total of 37 pts whilst in Category two Ann Coyle (36) took the prize with 37 pts also.

The final mixed event of the season takes place this Sunday with the Killyhevlin Mr & Mrs Event, there is also a separate mixed event which coincides with this tournament, the first tee is reserved from 1pm -3pm, please adhere strictly to these tee off times.

The tickets for the club dinner on 7th November are booking up well and they are now available to purchase from the club office, music on the night is by the brilliant Lee Roy Brown Band.

In the Last man standing there was decimation last weekend with no fewer than 298 players being eliminated leaving just 64 in contention for the £1000 prize.

LOW HANDICAP PLAYERS DOMINATE PAT KIRK OPEN

The clubs lower handicap golfers took the majority of the prizes in Saturday’s Pat Kirk Open Stableford, which for the most part was played in un-forecast dry but blustery conditions, making scoring difficult especially on the outward nine holes, essential greens maintenance work on eight of the greens also added to the difficulty tariff on the day. The winner was the clubs current lowest handicap golfer, playing off two Conal got it round in a brilliant 67 gross which was two under par and converted to 40 stableford points this was made up with 3 birdies one bogey and fourteen pars to claim an unusual nett win for someone of such a low mark! The runner up was Paul O’Reilly (5) who has had a fantastic first season back at the game after a few years absence, Paul also carded 40pts but was narrowly beaten on countback despite a fantastic finish. Gary King (16) finished in third place with a steady 38 pts with Cathal Patton (5) taking the gross prize with 33 gross pts, Mark Brolly (10) was fourth with 38 pts with Martin Rouse (8) taking fifth also with 38 pts, the nines went to Vincent Bradley with 21 pts for the front nine and to Paddy O’Kane (10) with 20pts for the back nine. The presentation for this event will take place on Sunday 27th September at 7.30pm.

Thursday Club
A sure sign of the summer golfing season is coming to an end is the beginning of the Thursday club and it duly got underway on Thursday past with a very good first week entry which is set to increase even more this week.  The winner of week one was Declan Lynch (11) with a very good 40pts, Kieran McAleer (23) took second place with 38 pts with Martin Corry (16) in third with 37pts, this week is another qualifying event over 18 holes, all members are invited to join the Thursday society, the joining fee is only £5 for the entire season!

Monday Club
With other counter attractions this week’s Monday club saw a smaller than normal entry, the winners were Jim Arbuckle, Pascal McGillian, Michael Forbes and Jimmy Duncan with 99 pts.

Ladies Golf
The Tyrone & Fermanagh Ladies betterball team lost their title they had won over the past two seasons in a nail biting finish against Dungannon G.C. Ladies on Sunday past. Trailing 5-0 and 14 holes behind from the first leg the Strabane Ladies never gave up and for a while looked favourites to overturn the huge deficit. They secured two matches early on by large margins to practically wipe out the holes advantage and when the third match on the course also won 3/2 the local ladies looked to be in the ascendancy as they led one up in the first match out going up the last hole and were dormie two up in the last match, however a brilliant up and down on the final green from one of the visiting Ladies saw Dungannon secure a half match and the title, this a brilliant effort from the local ladies who showed great determination and no small amount of grit on the evening and were ultimately very unlucky indeed.

Last week’s Ladies event was the Members Cup and saw a first win of season for Lorna Duffy (21) with an excellent 38pts, the categories went to Mandy Coyne (7) with 36pts and to Caren Corry also with 36pts. The final Wednesday night mixed event took place on Wednesday past with the win going to Lady Captain Monica McGettigan and Denis Porter with 22pts, Lady President Adeline Shiels partnered Maurice McGettigan to the runners up spot with 20pts with Kathleen Hoynes and Foncie McNally third with 20pts.  The closing mixed event of the season will be played on Sunday 27th September with the Killyhevlin Hotel Open Mr & Mrs event, there is also the usual mixed pairs competition which runs simultaneously, the entry sheet for this is now posted and a timesheet that is available between 1pm-3pm for the day.

The rearranged Frylite Senior Scratch Cup takes place this Sunday 20th Sept at the club, entries can be taken up until Friday of this week.

The new game of “Last Man standing” got underway last weekend with a brilliant entry of 444, eighty five of those departed in weekend one. There has been dedicated text number created for entrants to submit their weekly selection, you text 87007-LMS at the beginning of the text followed by your promotors name, your name and then your team.

The winner of this weeks £50 bar credit draw was Club President Frankie Houston. Another attractive draw at the club over the next couple of weeks is a draw for a fourball at Lough Erne including the use of buggies, this is sponsored by our own Lynn McCool with the proceeds going to the Captains Charity.

There is music in the club this Sunday evening at 8pm with Niall Gallagher after the Scratch Cup presentations.

Club News – 8th September 2015

5th ANNUAL BRIAN PATTON MEMORIAL DAY.

Once again the golfers of Strabane turned out in their numbers for the annual Brian Patton Memorial Day, an event that continues to go from strength to strength with players always keen to show their respect and admiration for one of Strabane Golf Club’s greatest ever players, and one who was always on hand to help others with their game at times when they may have struggled.  In addition to the good home support on Sunday there was also a fantastic entry from Faughan Valley G.C. with no fewer than 51 players from there registering as visitors, many thanks also to the 16 visiting players from Silverwood Golf Club Co.Armagh who also made the journey. The winner on the day was Faughan Valley member Glen Hinds who returned a fine 4 over par round to record a very impressive 42pts, just edging Strabane player Paul Bogle (11) who finished one shot back on 40pts, the same total as Faughan Valley greens-keeper Kevin Hunter (10) who took third with the same total. Strabane’s brightest young prospect Conor Byrne (8) carded a magnificent 23 pts on his inward nine to total 39pts and take fourth with greens convenor Ben Corry (7) in fifth also with 39pts. Enda Kennedy (-1) started with an uncharacteristic blank hole at the first hole but went on to finish on level par to take first gross with Bernard Kelly (4) the runner up in this category with 35 gross pts. The nines went to Johnny Potts and Sean MacIntyre respectively, John McMenamin was the winner of the guests prize with 37pts.
In the Ladies section Mary McCrory was the winner with 36pts with Rosemary Wilson the runner up with 34 pts.
Congratulations to Paul McGill who recorded a hole in one in the event holing out at the par three 7th hole with the perfect 6 iron shot, Paul is the 6th club member this year to have won the coveted Boss hole in one watch.

Bistro 49 September Medal
There was a good entry for last Saturday’s event the Bistro 49 September medal which was won in fine style by Robert Bell (15) with an excellent total of 63 nett in the breezy conditions, Kevin Heffernan (27) was the runner up with 65 nett with the very consistent David Friel (11)  again featuring in third place with 67 nett, the same total as fourth placed Michael Thompson (13) with Martin Patton (12) in fifth with 68 Nett.
There was a first in the category prizes with the afore mentioned 13 year old Conor Byrne taking category one with nett 68 and his dad Hugh Byrne (17) taking category two with the same score, category three was claimed by Gus McCay (21) with 69 nett.  Conal Cooke was the winner of the gross prize with a two over par round, Denis Porter took the over 60’s prize with 69 nett.

With the Thursday Club due to get underway this Thursday 10th September the committee ran an 18 holes Thursday Club sweep last week. The winner was Johnny Potts (22) with 41pts, with Declan Doherty (12) the runner up with 39pts, John Blee was third with 38pts.
All cub members are invited to join the Thursday Club which continues right throughout the autumn and winter months. The entry fee is £5 and then £3.50 per week which includes twos, a full list of Thursday Club rules can be found on the noticeboard.

The Monday Club teams also got underway this week with the first one going to Denis Porter, Jimmy Wasson, Hugh Casey and George Turner with 111 pts.

In club representative golf this week there were mixed fortunes for Strabane. There was an excellent performance from Oliver McNally’s O’Hare Cup team who once again lifted this trophy defeating a good Blacklion GC side 18-16 overall, not such good news for Kieran Martin’s Phair Cup team as they suffered a very heavy 15½ – ½pts defeat in their final against Castlehume GC.
Freddie Patterson’s Donegal Junior Cup team also trail after their semi-final first leg against Gweedore golf club going down by six matches to one at the Donegal venue.

The entry sheets are again posted for the rescheduled Frylite Senior Scratch Cup which is set for Sunday Week the 20th September.

Ladies Golf
Last week’s Ladies event was the Bertie Colhoun Cup and was claimed by Mandy Coyne(8) who is in great golfing form lately.  Mandy’s great total of 39pts added to her recent Lady Presidents day triumph, she ran out the clear winner in this one by an impressive 5 shots from the category winners Catherine Neeson (18) and Mary McCrory (34).

In mixed golf this week the winners were Adeline Shiels and Mark Sharkey who teamed up with Mary McCrory and Brian O’Kane to win the team competition.

PRESIDNTS DAY WIN FOR JOE

Joe Kennedy (21) was the popular winner of Mr Frankie Houston’s Presidents Prize on Saturday past, which thankfully was played on a beautiful day weather wise.  Joe returned an excellent total of 42 pts, despite a blank hole at the first, Joe had raced to the turn carding 22pts and a further 20pts on the back nine saw him set his winning total that held up for the remainder of the day. Joe, a relative newcomer to the game, expressed his gratitude to the President on the wonderful prize, and then going on to thank all who had congratulated him on his win and added he felt he was inspired from above as he felt his dad Vincent who passed away a fortnight ago was looking down on him and would have been a very proud man at his achievement. The unlucky runner up was Nicky Patton (6) who had put a faultless back nine together of two under playing the last but an uncharacteristic loose drive left him largely blocked out and led to a bogey 5 which ultimately cost him the win, nevertheless his total of 41 pts was excellent golf and only one over par on the day. Garvin Godfrey (13) finished in third place also with 41pts thanks mainly to a very strong finish where he parred the last four holes although he may point to a double bogey 6 at the 14th hole which also may have cost him dearly. Gary King (17) was one of the early starters and his morning return of 39 pts held on to take fourth position with Michael Thompson (14) fifth with 38 pts. Fred McGavigan (4) took yet another gross prize in a fantastic season for him once again, his 33 pts being just enough on the day. The nines went to Jason Gourley (10) with 22 pts for the outward nine and to Mark McCrea (10) who had a similar total for the inward nine.
The President received many plaudits for his excellent post dinner speech thanking everyone who had not only helped him on his big day but throughout his tenure to date.

As a prelude to Presidents Day the Presidents Mixed Foursomes was played on Wednesday past with 26 pairs competing despite the incessant rainy and cold conditions on the night. The winners were Margaret Wolfe and Gerry Casey with 31pts for the 13 holes in play, the runners up were Mary McCrory and Maurice McGettigan with 29 pts with Kathleen Hoynes and Francie Devine in third with 28pts, the gross prize went to Lorna Duffy and Dr Ciaran Kelly.

Saffron Indian Restaurant Open
The final Thursday open event of the season also went to Dr Ciaran Kelly (11) with 38 pts, Ciaran has thankfully bounced back from his recent illness in great fashion, the runner up was Fred McGavigan also with 38 pts with Dr Paul Armstrong (18)  third with 37pts,the gross prize went to Conal Cooke (2) with 32 gross pts.

Bank of Ireland Holiday Open
The final Monday open of the season was also played this week sponsored by the Bank of Ireland Open, the winner was Martin Patton (12) with 38pts, with Fred McGavigan (4) again featuring to take second place with 37 pts, Hugo McCusker (12) took third place also with 37 pts with Paddy Kennedy taking the gross prize with on this occasion with 33 pts.

Last week’s Ladies competition was for the Lady Captains Charity and saw Catherine Connolly (20) take the top prize with 36pts, the categories went to Bernie O’Kane (20) with 35pts and Carole McFeeters who had 35pts in category two.

In club representative golf this week Sean MacIntyres Lawson Cup team had a good first leg final result on Sunday against Castlehume, putting in a very strong finish to secure a 13-3 lead. Oliver McNally’s O’Hare Cup team have a tough task in their final after a narrow 10-6 win over Black Lion G.C and will have to play well in Thursday’s second leg at the Co. Cavan venue. Peter Doherty’s Donegal Senior League team have also advanced beating Portsalon GC. after Conal Cooke won in a play-off at the Donegal venue almost holing his second shot, the match having previously finished level overall at 7 matches each and the teams had run out of time to complete the tie.

The popular JJ’s Monday Club team event will commence on Monday next the 7th September with the Thursday club set to begin on Thursday 10th September. The Thursday club are running an 186 holes qualifying sweep this Thursday 3rd September £3 which includes 2’s.

CRAWFORD TAKES CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

Four handicapper Darren Crawford lifted his third ever club champion title on Saturday past in the Valerie Manning Jewellers sponsored Club Championship. Darren had played super steady golf all day reaching the turn in one under gross with birdies at the 2nd & 6th holes but he gave these back on the 10th & 11th with bogies and seemed to have lost his chance with an uncharacteristic double bogey 6 at the par 4 – 17th hole but a miraculous par at the last after a superb up and down saw him hang on to take the prestigious title by a single shot from runner up Conal Cooke (1), two closing bogies for Conal denied him the 2015 title, third in the gross section was Nicky Wolfe (7) with a good four over par return of 73. In the nett section Martin Keyes (21) was the winner with an excellent 64 Nett despite a six at the last hole, just finishing ahead of Barry Henderson (17) on break of tie, a triple bogey 7 at the 15th hole eventually proving costly for Barry, third Nett was Jimmy Callan (11) who continues to defy his years with yet another prize winning day returning a fine 65 Nett in this one.
The category prizes were claimed by Nicky Patton 66 Nett in category one, Gerard Walsh (16) 66 Nett in Category two and Declan Doherty (19) with 68 Nett in Category three.

FMC ACCOUNTANTS OPEN STROKE.
This competition was played in warm but extremely windy conditions with the strong southerly wind prevailing for most of the day, particularly in the late afternoon thus making good scoring very difficult especially as this was a stroke event, this duly reflected in the scores with the competition showing up as a reduction only tournament. The best of the day was Martin McDermott (3) with an excellent 71 Nett which was good enough on break of tie only from Adrian McLaughlin (12), John Blee (16) took third spot with 72 Nett with Paddy Kennedy taking the gross prize with 76 Gross.

Monday Open
The course was still very wet in many places and the greens holding well on Monday after the enforced cancellation of the Frylite Senior Scratch Cup the previous day due to the torrential rain for most of Sunday, Paul O’Reilly (6) took full advantage of these conditions to shoot a remarkable lifetime best of 66 gross that equated to 45pts, Pauls fantastic display included no less than six birdies with three of these in the last four holes eventually running out the competition winner by an amazing 7pts from Runner up Patrick McCrossan (5) with 38 pts with young Conor Byrne (9) in third with 37 pts, Conal Cooke took the gross prize.

Ladies Golf
The big Ladies event this week was the Claire’s Hair Salon Open Stableford. Following on from her great victory on Lady Captains Day, Lisa Patton (16) again topped the leader board this time with 39 pts which saw her the clear winner by three points from runner up Catherine Connolly (20) with Jennifer Rouse (12) third a shot further back on 35 pts. The gross went to Mandy Coyne (8) with the categories going to Catherine Neeson (18) 33 pts, Olive Reid (28) with 34 pts and to Geraldine Masterson (31) also with 34 pts, the nines prizes went to Mary Gallagher 20pts and to Patricia Kelly with 17 pts.

In club representative golf Oliver McNally’s O’Hare Cup team have reached yet another final in an event that Strabane have totally dominated in recent years, wrapping up their match with Castlehume G.C .  The first leg of this year’s final decider will take place this Thursday at home against Black Lion G.C with a 3.00pm tee off time.
Freddie Patterson’s Donegal Junior League team have also progressed in their event after Saturdays home leg win over Letterkenny G.C.

The postponed Frylite Scratch Cup has been reschedules for Sunday 20th September, the entry sheet for members shall remain with a new visitors sheet required. This week’s £50 bar credit winner was Ciaran Murphy.
Last Man Standing gets underway on Saturday 12th September.
Bagatelle make their final ever visit on their last ever tour to the golf club on Sunday night, tickets are currently on sale priced at £14 with a two pounds concession to club members. The band are on stage at 10pm with support from Klassix Disco.

DOUBLE CELEBRATION FOR MANDY

There was reason for double celebration for the ladies sections lowest handicapper Mandy Coyne last Tuesday as she lifted Ms Adeline Shiels Lady President’s Prize and in the process helped herself to a hole in one at the par three 12th hole. Mandy’s winning total of 73 nett is a reflection on how difficult the course is currently playing, the roughs being particularly difficult to play out off at present due to the late Summer growth spurt. The runner up on Adeline’s big day was lady vice-Captain Anne Sharkey with 74 nett, just relegating Caren Corry on break of tie to third place, Jennifer Rouse picked up the gross prize, the categories went to Catherine Neeson, Lorna Duffy and Kathleen Hoynes with the nines being claimed by Imelda Doherty and Mary Gallagher, the men’s prize was won by Maurice McGettigan. The Lady President thanked all who had made her year to date such a pleasant experience in particular the staff of the club who she thanked  for all their hard work.

Strabane Training Services Open
Young player Daniel Duffy (23) took his first ever senior win on Saturday in the Strabane Training Services Open with an eye-catching total of 44 pts which included no less than five four point holes and two blank holes, the very unlucky runner up was Patrick Kennedy (3) who carded a fantastic two under par gross on his card with 16 pars and two birdies leaving him a nett total of 41pts, a great score by any standards especially from the blue markers.
Mark Quinn (14) took third spot with his early morning total of 40pts with the ever improving Stephen Donaghey (14) in fourth with 39pts, David Friel took fifth place with 38pts. Visiting player Conor Friel (6) took the gross prize with 31 gross pts. Denis Porter (12) took the first nine with 22pts with Seamus Devenney(20) winning the back nine also with 22pts. The presentation for this and other recent competitions is this coming Sunday at 9pm.

Farmers Home Open
Eddie O’Kane (28) was the winner of last Thursdays Open competition kindly sponsored by the Farmers Home Strabane with a good total of 40pts, Paul O’Hare (12) covered the inward nine in great fashion to take the runners up berth with 39pts, the very consistent John Maxwell took third also with 39pts,  Enda Kennedy (-1) warmed up for this week’s Frylite Senior Scratch Cup to take the gross prize with a two over par round.

Members please note that the course is booked from 7am-4pm for the hosting of the scratch cup, spectators are most welcome, there will be music following the presentations with Niall Gallagher.

Finally on a sad note our deepest condolences are sent to our senior bar steward Stephen on the death of his father Vincent Kennedy this week, Vincent was a life-long member of the club and really enjoyed his golf when his health allowed in past years, our best wishes are extended to his wife Betty and club member Joe and to all the Kennedy family may he rest in peace.

TRIPLE CROWN FOR SHANE
Shane McLaughlin (9) again topped the leader board on Saturday in the Pat O’Neill Building Services Open, his third big win of the season adding to his victories in the Murphy’s on the Green Open and the McHugh’s Oil Open.
Shane was one of four players who recorded 39 pts on the day a score that looked beyond him with two blank holes recorded on the front nine at the 5th and the 9th holes, but a fine level par second nine including birdies at the 10th & 18th holes saw him secure his triple crown of wins this season thus far. The runner up in the multiple break of tie was Fred McGavigan (5) who again has been having a remarkable season a bogey five at his least favourite hole at present the par 4- 17th maybe costing him the win. Michael Neeson (11) is another player who has found some fine form and he duly took third place in this one, fourth was John Maxwell (12) he had raced to the turn with 22pts but a poor finish saw him fourth of the quartet of 39pts. John Wylie (10) took fifth place with 38pts with the very much in form Jimmy Callan taking the over 60’s prize with 38pts, the nines prizes went to Franke Gallagher (9) with 22pts for the outward nine and to Paul O’Hare(12) with the same total on the inward nine.

Last Thursday’s event was won by relative newcomer Eoghan Farrell (21) who picked up his second recent win with a fine total of 42 pts to win by a two from the runner up Eddie Patton (10) with 40 pts, Shay Callaghan (7) took third also with 40 pts with the gross going to Fred McGavigan (5) with an excellent two over par round that converted to 39pts.

Commiserations to Garvin Godfrey and his JB.Carr team who lost out in the semi-final to close neighbours Ballybofey & Stranorlar in the Ulster final played on Monday past, trailing 4-1 from the first leg the home side never really looked like reversing the scoreline and our Donegal neighbours ran out fairly comfortable winners in the end.

Better news on the Tyrone and Fermanagh Lawson Cup front where Sean MacIntyre’s team did more than reverse their first leg score line winning 14pts-2pts at home to qualify for this year’s final on a margin of 18-16 overall.

Entries are being taken for the Frylite Senior Scratch Cup which takes place on Sunday 23rd August.
Tickets for Bagatelle’s final year tour on Sunday 30thAugust, remain on sale at the club priced at £14.

JASON WINS IRISH ROAD MOTORS MEDAL

Long hitter Jason Gourley (11) got his game under control for Saturday’s monthly medal that was kindly sponsored by Irish Road Motors Repair Centre Campsie, playing in good early morning conditions Jason got it round in 63 Nett scoring par at every hole from the 8th onwards, the only shots he dropped to par for his entire round came between the fourth and seventh holes where five shots were lost, four of those going around the “loop”, his fine finish however saw him run out a clear two shot winner on the day from Mark Neely (12) another player having a very steady golf season his score of 65 nett and just got the better of Jordan Arthur (6) on break of tie, young Jordan however will be bitterly disappointed with his back nine total having raced to the turn with four birdies including three two’s at the second, seventh and eighth holes to turn in three under gross 31, a run of four consecutive inward nine bogeys from the thirteenth put pay to a potential lifetime best. Another of our young guns Conor Byrne(10) took fourth place with 67 nett reducing the  13 year old to single figures for the first time as he continues to improve rapidly.  Garvin Godfrey (14) was in fifth place also with 67 nett a triple bogey eight at the par 5 tenth hole the only real blemish on his card. The categories went to Martin Rouse 68 Nett, Terry Doherty (12) 67 nett and to Noel o’Kane with 68 nett. The gross prize went to Conal Cooke with a three over par total of 72, the over 60’s winner was Ben Corry with 69 nett. The presentation for this and other recent competitions is this coming Sunday night 9th August at 9pm sharp.

Forbes Plumbing Open
Thursdays event was the Forbes Plumbing and Home Heating Open Stableford and it provided a notable double for Stephen McCay (7) as he had earlier in the week won the Monday open and he added this one to his tally with a good 39 pts just getting the better of Ronnie Wiley (12) on break of tie, third place went to Andrew Connolly with 38 pts, Paddy Kennedy (3) took the gross prize with a two over total of 34 gross pts.

Jimmy Callan (13) scored another marker for the club veterans with a runaway win in this week’s Monday Open with a five shot winning margin of 41 pts, the runner up with 36 pts was Kevin McGinley (10) with Fred McGavigan (5) again featuring taking third also with 36 pts, the gross went to Jordan Arthur (6) with 29 gross pts.

Well done this week to George Turner and his Jimmy Carroll Team who lifted the All-Ireland title in that event last Monday at Westmanstown G.C Co.Dublin edging out the other seven participating provincial qualifiers in the seniors better-ball event.
The team registered scores of 44pts, 44pts and 41 pts to win the title by two shots, many congratulations to all involved.

Please note the first tee is strictly booked from 12.15pm this Sunday as we are hosting the Ulster Finals of both Junior Cup and Pearce Purcell between 1pm and 3pm,hopefully the weather will eventually turn for the better for the running of these prestigious tournament finals.

Ladies Golf
Heather Mitchell (20) made it a recent quick fire double having won the recent Ladies open she added the Bank of Ireland trophy to her list last Tuesday with a score of 34 pts in very difficult conditions, the categories went to Jennifer Rouse (12) with 33 pts and to Rosemary Wilson (26) with 32 pts.

Fourteen pairs played in last weeks mixed greensomes, the winners were Carole McFeeters and Eddie McHugh with 35 pts, the runners up were Adeline Shiels and Maurice McGettigan with 34 pts and third went to Caroline and Frankie Connolly with 34 pts also.

Congratulations to the Ladies Tyrone & Fermanagh Betterball team who have qualified for the final of that event once again after a great battle with Dungannon on Sunday past, the ladies secured two away wins to qualify on holes by a margin of three up. Best wishes to our Lady President Adeline Shiels who hosts her Lady Presidents next Tuesday hopefully the weather will be kind.

Garvin Godfrey’s J.B Carr squad are in Ulster final action this Thursday against close neighbours Ballybofey to determine who will represent the province at Woodenbridge Golf club Co.Wicklow in early September, the home leg of the encounter will follow next Monday at Strabane.
Also well done to Oliver McNally’s O’Hare Cup team who are in a very commanding position against Castlehume G.C after the first leg of their semi-final having won at the Co Fermanagh venue by 11pts-5pts.
Kieran Martins Phair Cup team were made to fight all the way before securing their final berth against a very determined Newtownstewart team on Sunday past having led 9.5-6.5 from the away leg they only just got the points they needed to progress in a very tight encounter having advanced 17-15 overall.
Sean MacIntyre’s Lawson Cup team are 12-4 down to Aughnacloy G.C after their first leg match at the South Tyrone venue and have it all to do in next Sunday’s second leg.

Entries are now being taken for this year’s Frylite Senior Scratch Cup on 23rd August.

GREAT FINISH FOR BRIAN

An excellent finish from 19 handicapper Brian Cairns saw him lift the inaugural H.S.S. Hire Open stableford on Saturday past. Brian had recovered from a poor start to register 21pts on the front nine and despite a triple 7 bogey at the 14th hole, a level par last four holes including birdie at the difficult par 4- 17th hole saw him return a winning total of 41 pts. The unlucky runner up was Matthew Curran (14) who finished with a 6 at the last hole where a 5 would have seen him top the leader-board, nevertheless Matthew continues to improve rapidly since his return. Third place went to the consistent Mark Brolly (11) also with 40 pts, Mark also finished with a double bogey at the final hole and again anything less would have sealed the win. Fourth place went to Nigel Houston (13) who has rediscovered some good form off late a blank hole at the par 5 tenth hole just gave him too much to do on the inward nine. Rory Doherty (12) got to the turn with a remarkable 25 pts which was one under par gross but a poor second nine with only 15 pts saw Rory slip to fifth place when he too would have looked a certain winner. Paddy Kennedy (3) took the gross prize with an excellent one over par 35 pts, Ciaran Duffy (9) was the first nine winner with 21pts with Chris McDermott (13) taking the back nine prize with 21 pts also, the presentation for this event and recent other opens will take place on Sunday 9th August at 8.30pm.

McGoldrick Sports Open

The winner was relative newcomer Eoghan Farrell (23) with a solid return of 40pts, Caolan Crawford (5) took the runners up position with 38pts the same total as Vincent Bradley (19) who came to grief at the last hole missing out on a winning chance, Fred McGavigan (5) was again the gross winner with a four over par 32 gross pts.

The rains again arrived putting pay to the chances of a decent entry for the weekly open, however there was double celebration for Declan O’Hare (7) who took first with 38pts and also helped himself to a hole in one at the par 3 – 16th hole striking the perfect 6 iron shot and picking up an exclusive Boss hole in one club watch for his trouble, this is the 5th hole in one recorded at the club this season to date. Aaron Boyle (23) took second place also with 38pts with Aiden o’Neill (19) in third with 37pts.

LISA A POPULAR WINNER OF MONICA’S BIG DAY.

Lisa Patton (16) was the very popular winner on Saturday in Lady Captain, Monica McGettigan’s Captains prize day which proved to be a fantastic day for our Ladies Branch from start to finish. Heavy early morning downpours had threatened to destroy a day that was second to none in preparation but thankfully the rains receded allowing most of the players to enjoy a wonderful day’s golf.
Lisa at the age of 20 is the youngest ever winner of a Lady Captains prize at Strabane and seldom has a winner been more popular. Lisa having represented the club at every level and despite her youth she is a very experienced golfer having played for many years under the tuition of her grandad Packie Patton (R.I.P.) who would have been a very proud man on Saturday. Lisa’s total was 69 Nett was good enough by one shot from Rosemary Wilson (27) a recent Captains prize winner herself and a very deserving runner up on the day. Jennifer Rouse (12) has recently returned to the game and picked up where she left off, again in the frame taking third place also with 70 nett. The gross prize winner was Mandy Coyne (8) with an excellent 79 gross. The categories went to Shauna Stewart (12) in category one with 77 Nett, Caroline Connolly (22) 71 nett in category two and to Carole McFeeters (36) with 71 Nett in category three. The nines went to Adeline Shiels and to Isobel Duffy. The lady Captain at her presentations thanked all who had been at her side for her tenure to date going on to thank all the workmen who have completed some fantastic renovations and additions to our club this season and again thanked all the local businesses who had been instrumental in helping fundraise for the new on course toilets which were officially opened in this last week.

There had been a great turnout also for the first ever Lady Captains mixed event sponsored by the Travellers Rest Lifford Road, which had taken place as a prelude to the big day on Wednesday past with 28 pairs competing. The winners were Catherine Neeson and Pat McAneny with 34 pts over the 15 holes in play, the runners up were Annette Patton and Sean MacIntyre with 33 pts with lady vice-Captain Anne Sharkey and Captain Pat Corry were  in third also with 33 pts. The gross winners were Norma Brogan and Denis Porter.

Last Tuesday’s Ladies event was the Eileen Keery Memorial Cup and was won by Geradine McCrory (31) with 69 nett, Bernie O’Kane (20) took category one with 71 nett and category two went to Annette Patton with 73 Nett.

“Quickfire double for Declan”
Declan Lynch has been showing sure signs of a return to his best golfing form off late, and he emphasised this with a great double in last week’s midweek events. Winning first the weekly Monday open with a fine 41 pts playing off 13 handicap and then another winning total of 39 pts in the Foothill Restaurant sponsored competition on Thursday past. Mondays runner up was Conal Cooke (2) who got it around in one under gross for 39pts with Michael Mathers (17) again featuring this time in third place with 37 pts, Paul O’Reilly had taken the gross with 30 gross pts.
Over 90 cards had been taken out for the Foothill’s of Gortin event, the runner up here was Terry Doherty (13) on the same total as the winner 39pts with Ronnie Wiley (12) in third on 38pts, young Connor Meehan who featured very highly in last week’s Ulster Boys competition held in Omagh took his first ever gross prize, congratulations to Connor who has recently achieved single figures and is undoubtedly one of the clubs brightest young prospects.

Open Week
Sunday Past saw the beginning of Open Week at the club with the traditional opener the Frylite team event attracting 30 teams, it was played of a very popular new format a Champagne Scramble where all four players drive off and then selected the best tee shot finishing out with their own ball from the selected spot, two scores then to count. The winners with a great total off 98 pts were Brian Forester, Paul Kavanagh, Ciaran Murphy and Ciaran Doherty winning the fantastic new cart bags supplied by the Strabane Golf Store. The runners up just one point behind were Hugo McCusker, Pat Patton, Eugene Patton and John Duffy with Brian Brolly, Mark Sharkey, Ronnie Wiley, and Francie Devine in third with 96 pts.

VETERAN JIMMY GRABS THE HEADLINES.

Veteran golfer, Jimmy Coyle, was the man grabbing all the headlines in local golfing circles this week, playing in the Hugh Harley Memorial Cup, Jimmy firmly stamped his name on the great list of club achievements when he returned a truly memorable score of 47pts which would convert to 59 nett, taking that Jimmy is 85yrs old he actually bettered his age with his gross score of 84 on a day when the course was playing at its full length with play from the white markers and a good breeze that prevailed for the entirety of his remarkable round. We are not sure if this feat is actually a nationwide record for someone of Jimmy’s vintage to win a top qualifying event but we certainly suspect that it indeed is. Joe Harley, the sponsor of the event gave his congratulations to Jimmy at Sunday night’s presentation having added that the winner was actually born in the same year as his late father Hugh who was a lifelong sponsor here at Strabane Golf Club. Jimmy thanked all at the club who had taken to the clubs Facebook page and had stopped him in recent days to add their congratulations on his achievement. The unlucky runner up in the competition was Neil Conroy (17) who returned a total that would have one on any normal day a fine 44pts, with Andrew Connolly third back on 38pts, Fred McGavigan again took the gross prize with 30 gross pts.

Mc Hughs Oil Open
There was an excellent turnout for Saturday’s event the McHugh’s Oil Open Stableford with 180 cards being taken out. The winner was the very much in form Shane McLaughlin(11) who has been having a wonderful golfing season to date, his total of 40pts held up throughout the day with a stiff breeze again making playing conditions rather tricky, the runner up was Matt Keyes (19) two back on 38pts with John McMenamin (18) another of four players on the same score in third, fourth went to Gerry McColgan (19) with young Connor Meehan (10) again featuring finishing fifth with 37 pts getting himself ever closer to single figures. Fred McGavigan (4) was again the man to lift the gross prize this time with a two over par 34 pts. Rory McColgan (12) took the first nine prize with Mark Neely (12) taking the prize for the back nine.

Strabane A.F. C. Ladies and Gents Open
The hole in one prize at the 16th hole for this event unfortunately was not won much to the relief I suspect of the insurers, but it did help attract a sizeable entry, the winner with a fine round of 41 pts which was just one over par was Peter Doherty (6) Colin McCafferty (14) was the runner up with 39 pts with David Friel in third with 38 pts. The Ladies winner was Roisin Corry with 35 pts and the best non GUI Player was Wils Patterson.

Monday Open
Last week’s Monday open event went to another of the clubs outstanding young prospects Conor Byrne (11) to mark a week when we had the youngest winner to date and the oldest as Conor is only 12 years old, his return of 40 pts was the clear winner by three shots from the runner up Declan Lynch (13) with Tommy Sharkey (21) in third with the same total of 37 pts.

Ladies Golf
The ladies branch are looking forward to Lady Captains Day this coming Saturday, we wish them, and Lady Captain Mrs Monica McGettigan, all the best for the big day hopefully the weather will be kind.
In competitive golf last week’s winner making it an altogether fabulous week for senior golfers was Mrs Isobel Duffy(32) who rolled back the years to record a fine winning total of 38 pts, Heather Mitchell (22) took category one with 35 pts with Mrs Imelda Doherty (30) winning category two with the same return.

Last weeks mixed event was the qualifying competition for the Worcester cup with 26 pairs competing, best on the night were Carole McFeeters and Foncie McNally with a great return of 52 nett for the 15 holes in play, the runners up were Isobel and Danny Duffy with 52.5 nett with Lady Captain Monica McGettigan and her husband Maurice in third on the same total, the full draw for the matchplay is now displayed on Pat McAneny’s blind noticeboard!

Good luck to Martin Rouse and his Junior Cup team who take on Rosapenna G.C at Ballybofey in the Ulster last 16 match on Thursday evening. Well done to Sean MacIntyre and Gerard Walsh and thier Lawson Cup team who had a great result on Friday evening defeating close neighbours Newtownstewart in a very close contest.

A reminder that Open Week starts at the club on Sunday with the Frylite Scramble event, timesheets for all days are posted on the noticeboard. FRANKIE TAKES CAPTAINS PRIZE.

Club Captain, Pat Corry, was blessed with a most beautiful day of great weather and sunshine for his Captains Day on Saturday past at Strabane, this was most befitting for a Captain who has put so much work into his year to date, not only with club matters but also in his representation of the club, always being there to support the teams throughout the season no matter about travelling distances and time. The winner of the Captains fantastic prize was 24 handicapper Frankie Connolly with a fine 64 nett. Frankie rediscovering a bit of form that he is well capable off just at the right time and on the right day, playing a very steady round with some excellent chipping and putting on the inward nine to take the big day’s honours, the unlucky runner up was last year’s Captain Senan Roarty (13) who led for a good part of the afternoon also with the same total of 64 nett, Senan will look back at a rare loose shot on the 15th where he lost his drive to the right in heavy rough which ultimately may have cost him the top award. Third place went to Michael Neeson (11) one of the earlier morning starters a triple bogey seven at the 17th hole putting a black mark on an otherwise excellent round although Michael rallied well to birdie the last. Paul McGill (6) took fourth position with a fine three over par round that equalled 66 nett, with Marc Brolly (11) fifth with the same total of 66 nett. Conal Cooke (2) took the gross prize with the round of the day a one under par 68 gross also recording a fine birdie three at the last, set up with a massive strike from the tee that was also long enough to take the longest drive prize. In category one Cathal Patton took the prize with a 66 nett also, Category 2 went to Foncie McNally (15) with 68 nett and Vincent Bradley(19) took category three with 70 nett. The closest to the pin at the 18th went to the Captains son Aidan Corry leaving his second shot extremely close. The Captain thanked all who had helped make his year to date such a success and reserved special praise for the ladies branch at the club who have worked tirelessly to improve the clubhouse which is looking fantastic with all the great recent additions. He thanked all the members for their courtesy and respect throughout his tenure to date and thanked all council, convenors and council bodies for their excellent work. The captain and all the speakers on the evening reserved special praise for our Greenkeeper Paul McFadden and his staff for the immaculate condition of the course, we have without any doubt greens to rival any course in the country.

Captains Betterball
The annual prelude to Captains Day the Captains betterball competition was as customary held on Thursday last with 47 pairs participating. The winners were Patrick McCrossan and Aaron Boyle with an excellent return of 45pts which just got the better off Hugo McCusker and Eugene Patton who finished on the same total, third went to Stephen McCay and Fred McGavigan with 42 pts.

Captains Mixed Foursomes
Twenty seven pairs took cards out on Wednesday evening for the Captains mixed foursomes which was won in commanding fashion by Imelda Doherty and Denis Porter with a fine 36pts over the 15 holes in play, the runners up back on 32pts were Catherine Neeson and Paddy O’Kane with Lorna Duffy and Oliver McNally in third also with 32 pts. The gross prize went to Mandy Coyne and Senan Roarty.

Ladies Golf
The ladies branch turned out in numbers for last Tuesday’s event which was the Captains prize to the Ladies. Ironically the winner was the Captains wife, lady secretary Maeve Corry who took the award returning an excellent 69 nett. Alison Curry was the category one winner with 71 nett with the very much in form Orla Quinn featuring again in category two to take that prize.

In representative golf the Ladies Meille Bup team bowed out in the third round of that competition losing out by only four holes to close neighbours Ballybofey. In men’s team news Peter Doherty’s Donegal Senior League squad hold a 5 matches to 2 advantage over Portsalon G.C. and will have to play very well in the return match to advance further.  Sean MacIntyre’s Lawson Cup team have it all to do, picking up a slender 9-7 advantage over Newtownstewart G.C. and will need to pull out all the stops in the return encounter this week.

Well done to Peter Doherty who on the previous weekend in the Devines Sand and Gravel competition scored a hole in one at the 12th hole, holing out with a perfect nine iron shot, Peter’s ace is the fourth recorded at the club this season so far and oddly enough they have all came at the 12th hole.

Don’t forget there is a £12,000 car for a hole in one at the 16th in next Sundays Strabane A.F.C. Ladies and Gents open the timesheet for this one is rapidly filling up. The timesheets for Open week are now also all posted.

Declan Devine (12) showed a bit of long awaited form to take the runners up spot with a fine total of 41pts which was just ahead of the very consistent Fred McGavigan (5) who was home in level par for his day. Fourth went to Kieran McBride who had slipped out to 21 handicap, his 40pts could be a sign of good things to come, another of our teenage players Jordan Arthur (6) took fifth with 39pts with the gross also going to the “young guns” with Caolan Crawford taking this category with a tidy one over par round. The nines went to Eddie McCrea (18) with 21pts for the outward nine and to Mark Corry (13) with an eye catching 23pts for the inward nine. Enda at last
Local golf star, and scratch player, Enda Kennedy (0) achieved a major milestone of his bucket list in last Thursdays Northern Confectionary Open, when for the first time ever in over 30 years of playing at Strabane, and winning so many titles including numerous Strabane Scratch Cups, he finally managed to win a competition outright, beating all the handicaps to take first place with a great round of 66 which transferred to 39 stableford pts. New member Kieran McAleer (24) showed good potential taking the runners up spot also with 39pts with Patrick O’Doherty (21) taking third also with 39pts, Paul O’Reilly (7) took his first prize since his return to the game earlier this season with 31 gross pts.

Mixed fortunes on the teams front this week our Senior Cup team played well at Castlerock golf club on Sunday past but missed out in qualifying by a handful of shots, Our Conway Cup team have relinquished that trophy for this year after overall first round defeat to close neighbours Newtownstewart G.C. despite winning the home leg by 11-5 the damage had been done the preceding week and they lost the tie 19.5-12.5 overall. In form Nicky Wolfe (9) kept his fine early season run going on Saturday when he claimed the John Fahy & Co Open stableford in fine and conclusive fashion by a clear margin of three points, a great opening salvo of 22pts to the turn, one over par in very difficult conditions set him up for the win and with a further 20 on the inward nine his total was highly unlikely to have been matched for the remainder of the day. Closest on the day came Joe Kennedy (22) another player who has also featured well in recent rounds with 39pts, third was Dr Ciaran Kelly(12) 38pts who will regret a poor finish to an excellent round recording two double bogies on the last two, James Harron (10) was fourth with 37pts the same total as fifth placed Liam Patton (14).
The gross went to Nicky Patton (8) with 29 gross pts, Michael Neeson (11) took the first nine with Patrick o’Doherty claiming the second nine. The presentation for this event is at 8.30pm 31st May.

Last week’s Monday open brought a win for another player in superb early season form Peter Doherty (5) with an excellent level par round that scored 41pts, Kevin Neeson (11) took second place with 37pts with Eddie Patton(11) third 35 pts Caolan Crawford took the gross on this occasion with 31 gross pts.

Unfortunately our Mixed foursomes team very narrowly failed to qualify at a blustery Greencastle GC on Sunday last missing out by two strokes.

Club representative golf
Our Donegal league team have a 3.5-1.5 lead over Portsalon G.C after their encounter at Strabane last Thursday and will have some work to do to qualify for the next round. Big win for George

George Turner(26) kept his fantastic run of late going in hugely impressive style on Saturday past to totally dominate the PG.McGillion Motors Open Stableford running out the clear winner by a massive 8 points returning an eye catching 43pts on a day where the gale force wind that prevailed from mid-morning made good scoring almost impossible. George got to the turn with 21pts up his sleeve and a further 22pts on the back nine left the entire field trailing in his wake. The runner up on the day was Tommy Forbes (12) who kept going to record 20pts on the back nine to finish the best of four cards on the same total. Third went to Kevin Gallagher (17) with Jimmy Henderson (25) again featuring in fourth place and club secretary Brian O’Kane (18) in fifth. The gross prize went to Enda Kennedy (0) with a round of five over par which in the conditions was highly impressive, the nines went to Joe Kennedy (26) with 16pts for the first nine and to Patsy McHugh (16) with 20pts for the second nine, the over 60’s winner was Chris McDermott (10) with 33pts. In total 144 players braved the elements with only five 2’s being recorded on the day we did have the first hole in one of the season however as 14 year old Conor Byrne aced the par three 12th hole playing the perfect 5 iron shot.

Tennents Open

The Bank Holiday Open was again played in windy conditions with heavy afternoon rain again making scoring difficult. The best of the 85 cards taken out was Eoin O’Neill (7) with 37 pts, Chris McDermott (13) was the runner up also on 37pts with Ronnie Wiley (11) third with 37pts.The gross prize went to Aidan Boyle with 30 gross pts.

The winners were Shauna Stewart, Lauren Patton and Lisa Patton with 74pts, the runners up were Catherine Neeson, Heather Mitchell and Geraldine McCrory with 72pts and third went to Rosemary Wilson, Rachel Devenney and Olive Reid with 68pts.
Congratulations to Anne Sharkeys Intermediate Cup Team who scored a fine 3-2 away victory over Letterkenny ladies at the Donegal venue on Sunday past to advance 6-4 overall.

Our sincere sympathies are extended to the family and friends of our past Lady President Annie O’Hagan who sadly passed away last Saturday after a brief illness, Annie will be very fondly remembered by all at Strabane Golf Club, may she rest in peace.

Our Jimmy Bruen Team unfortunately had a bad day on Sunday at Omagh Golf Club, the reigning Ulster Champions getting off to a bad start over the opening holes in their bid to qualify for the matchplay stages and were then hit with almost impossible playing condition’s in heavy rain that flooded the Omagh course leaving them with little opportunity to salvage pride and the earlier damage inflicted.

Our Ulster Fourball too had a bad day at local neighbours Ballybofey Golf Club losing all five matches on the day and have it all to do in next Sundays second leg.

Tickets remain on sale for the Red Hurley and Gary mcEvoy show scheduled for the club on Sat 16th May, any members intending to attend this fantastic night are urged to pick up tickets as soon as possible. The winner of this weeks £50 bar credit draw was Vincent Kennedy.

MARC EYES UP TOP SPOT IN GORMLEYS OPTICIANS OPEN.

Marc Brolly (11) saw his way to first place in Saturdays Gormley’s Opticians Open Stableford event that attracted a sizeable entry of 180 players, and although a beautiful spring day, the south-easterly wind swirling on the course throughout the duration made good scoring difficult. As a result Marc’s return of 39pts was good enough to lead a tightly bunched field. The runner up playing in his first competition in some time was Damian Roarty (9) who only missed out on top spot on break of tie. Third went to George Turner (28) with a good total of 38pts with Brian Brolly (8) 38pts, taking fourth to add a father and son element to the leader board, Ciaran Doherty took the final nett prize, the best of a few 37pts.
