Club Notes – 29th October 2014

The very strong south westerly wind made conditions extremely difficult on Saturday past with the three holes along the river playing particularly tough. John Brolly(21) made light of these facts however returning an eye-catching total of 44pts a remarkable total on the day, the runner up was Sean McGonagle(13) with an excellent total of 40pts with Liam Patton (15) third with 39 pts, the gross went to last week’s overall winner Nicky Wolfe (10) with 28 gross pts, the nines went to Paul McLaughlin (18) and to David Irvine(8). This week’s competition will be 15 holes non-qualifying and played from the yellow markers.

Club Notes – 21st October 2014

Stormy autumn conditions had set in for the weekend’s Saturday qualifying event which still attracted a decent entry of 130 players. The best card of the day was returned by Nicky Wolfe (10) with 37 pts which was just good enough on break of tie from Jim Potts (18) who matched that total, third place went to Michael Neeson (11) who has found some late season form he returned 36 pts. The gross went to Keith Patterson (5) with 27 gross points, the nines went to Declan Lynch(12) and to Matt Curran(15). This Saturdays competition is the final qualifier from the White Markers and is also the final timesheet of the season.

The previous Saturday’s golf was played in much calmer conditions and was won by the afore mentioned Michael Neeson who was playing of 13 handicap in this one, he returned a brilliant 45 pts which was only four over par on the day and saw him win by a clear four shots from the nearest challenger Albert McNally (25) with 41 pts, Rory Doherty (12) is another who has got back to his best golf and his 40 pts saw him take third place. Patrick Kennedy (3) took the gross with a level par round with the nines going to Noel O’Kane(25) and Joe Kennedy(22).

Last week’s Thursday Club week 7  was again played over 16 holes and saw Pascal McGillian (24) take the win with 38 pts, John Brolly (21) finished second a point behind with Brian Brolly (7) in third with 37 pts.

All the season’s matchplay events have concluded. Nicky Patton took the Jones Cup defeating Paddy McCrossan in the final, the Gallagher Cup went the way of Andrew Connolly who got the better of Eddie McHugh in that final. Martin Finlay was the winner of the Lawson Cup where he beat Mark Gillespie in a close final encounter.  In the Worcester Cup, Lady President Jean McGinley partnered Denis Porter to take the title from Patricia & Dr Ciaran Kelly.

A light supper buffet & music will be provided on the evening.

Roberts Cup
Connor Sharkey’s Roberts cup just missed out on retaining that cup as they went under to Castlehume Golf club over two legs played on Saturday & Sunday, the damage was done at home where the team went down by 8pts to 4pts on Saturday and despite a gallant fight back in Enniskillen on Sunday the eventual overall score was a 13-11 defeat.

Please note there will be 6 inch placing on fairways only on the course from Wednesday 22nd October!

Club Notes – 7th October 2014

Captains Outing

Stephen Alexander (20) was the very popular winner of last Saturday’s Captains outing to Greencastle Golf Club, with an excellent return of 43 pts to head the fields of 131 entrants. A very modest total of 17 pts from the Sion man on the opening nine, was definitely not a sign of things to come as he found his best form ever on the back nine shooting level par for the next eight holes and despite a double bogey five at the final hole he had amassed an eye catching 26 pts for the inward nine for a total that was never likely to be matched.
The runner up was club secretary, Brian O’Kane (20), with a fine score of 41 pts that would have been good enough on most days, third place went to Willie Irvine (16) with a solid 40 pts with the very much in form John McMenamin in fourth also with 40 pts, Rory McColgan (13) took fifth, another with 40 pts, with the gross going to Fred McGavigan who was round in one over par. The Captain Senan thanked everyone who had help organize his outing, everyone who travelled to play especially in such large numbers and special thanks to the Sponsors- The Herald Newspaper, The Sports Centre and Caldwell Motor Factors and special praise for Greencastle Golf club for the use of their beautifully presented course and their excellent hospitality on the day.

Club Sweep
For those members who could not make the day away there was a qualifying club sweep which was won by Paul Kavanagh (20) with 39 pts, Aidan Langan (19) was the runner up with 37pts with Noel O’Kane third with 36 pts the gross went to Dermott Corry (12).

The early pacesetter in the golfer of the year chase is Martin Finlay with 51pts, Paul O’Hare is the out in front in the “King of the two’s event with three “deuces” to date.
