Club Notes – 4th August 2014

There was a fantastic turnout at Strabane on Saturday for Mr Pat McAneny’s Presidents Prize with almost 200 cards being taken out on the day despite the meteorologists getting things horribly wrong, there was indeed just one shower all day but unfortunately it lasted from mid-morning for the duration. The winning card was returned by Kevin Connolly (6) with a brilliant round in the conditions of 40pts which was never likely to be equalled with no let up in the incessant rain. Kevin put in a very strong finish to take the main prize including a fantastic tee shot at the par three 16th hole which also saw him collect the nearest the pin prize. The runner up was Cecil Kerr (26), its many years since Cecil has featured on the rostrum and he was delighted to peak on the big day returning 39pts in the best off the day’s weather in the early morning. Rory Doherty (13) is getting back to playing some of the golf he is capable off and he too played very well in the rain to return 38pts. Kevin Neeson(11) is another player in top form and he took fourth with 37pts with Ciaran Doherty(9) in fifth also with 37pts, Declan O’Hare (7) has made a fantastic recovery after injury and this again continued on Saturday as his round of 6 over par and 37 pts took the gross prize. The nines went to Damien mc Crossan and to Chris Timoney.

Strabane Plumbing Services Open
Last Thursdays open was sponsored by Strabane Plumbing Services Ltd and saw a win for Frankie Houston(12) with an excellent 42pts which just got the better off Keith Patterson(5) on break of tie,Keith having returned a fine one under par gross in the afternoon, Third went to Jim Harley (9) who plays out off Portnoo G.C. The highlight of Jim’s round was a fantastic hole in one at the par three 7th hole striking a beautiful six iron shot. Fred McGavigan (4) took the gross prize with 34 gross points.+

3rd Tyrone Scouts Open
The 3rd Tyrone Scouts based at the Den in Strabane held their first ever golf fundraiser on Sunday past at the club with a ladies & gents open Stableford. The winner in the men’s section was early morning starter Maurice Doherty (17) with a great total of 43 pts, Colin McCafferty’s(12) great season continued with 41pts, with visiting player Kieran McAleer taking third with 39 pts, Paul McGill (5) took the gross prize with the nines going to Kevin Neeson and to Eddie Patton.
In the Ladies section, the winner was Orla Quinn with Kathleen Hoynes runner-up.

Monday Open
The previous Monday open went to Mark Brolly(15) with 41pts with Warner Mullen(19) in second place with 39 pts, third went to Fred McGavigan (5) with 38 pts and the gross went to Eoin o’Neill.

Ladies Golf
The Ladies competition this week was the Bank of Ireland Trophy and Heather Mitchel took the win win 38pts, the categories went to Lorna Duffy in category one with 36pts and to Donna Doherty in category two with 37 pts.

Last Wednesdays event was Mr Pat McAnenys Presidents Mixed competition with 30 pairs taking part. Annette Patton partnered Mark Sharkey to the winning score of 34 pts over the 15 holes, the runners up were Catherine Neeson and Patrick mcCrossan with 32 pts, third place went to Lorna Duffy and Sean MacIntyre also with 32 pts Maeve Corry and Denis Porter took the gross prize.

Well done to the Ladies Tyrone & Fermanagh Betterball team who wrapped up their semi-final tie with Castlehume golf club on Sunday to progress to this year’s final where they will defend the trophy they won last year.

Also in team action this week were Conor Sharkeys Roberts Cup team who turned in a great performance to take the first leg of their semi-final 10.5-1.5.  Liam Curry’s O’Hare Cup team have also reached the final of that event getting the necessary 1.5 pts they needed on the first nine against close neighbours Newtownstewart at the Baronscourt venue.
