Club Notes – 24th June 2014

TOMMY ON SONG

Club Caterer Tommy Forbes (11) found the correct recipe for success on Saturday to take the Mc Hughs Oil Open Stableford with a fine 42pts in tricky conditions. Matching nines of 21pts in each just saw him over the line from early morning starter Francey Conwell (20) on break of tie the winner’s fine finish of level par over the last six holes just about getting him the verdict. Third on the day went to Pat Patton(13) who raced to the turn with 24pts but with only 17 recorded on the way home, the Sion man had to settle for third place, Aidan Corry(12) has had a consistent season and he took fourth place with another solid 40pts returning level par and 24pts on the more difficult back nine, the same total as fifth placed Shay Callaghan(11) another of the clubs very promising junior members. The gross went to Paul McGill(6) with an excellent 3 over 33 gross pts. Jim Arbuckle (19) was the winner of the over 60’s category and the nines went to Hugh Byrne (17) who took the first nine and to Kevin Heffernan(26) who picked his first singles prize in taking the back nine.

Hugh Harley Memorial
The annual Hugh Harley Memorial Cup was played for on Thursday with Paul O’Neill (16) the very convincing winner with a great total of 45pts, Robert Bell (15) was the runner up with a fine 43pts with club president Pat McAneny (18) in third with 40pts, the gross went to Conor Sharkey (5) with a one over par total of 40pts.

Monday Open
Noel McCrory (14) took the final singles competition before Captains day winning the Monday open with 40pts and he just got the better of Seamus McPhilemy(23) on break of tie, Ronan Foley (5) finished third with 39pts. The gross went to Conal Cooke (2) with 34 gross pts.

Captains Mixed Foursomes
There was a good turnout for the Captains Mixed foursomes on Sunday past with 25 pairs participating. The winners were Mary McCrory and Denis Porter with an fine total of 41pts to win by two from the runners up Kathleen Hoynes and Aidan Boyle, third place went to Maeve Corry and Oliver McNally also with 39pts. The gross winners were Mandy Coyne and Foncie McNally.

There was also a great entry on Wednesday for the Worcester Cup Match play with 29 pairs entering. The winners on the night and leading qualifiers were Margaret and Nicky Wolfe with an excellent 64 Nett which took the top spot only on break of tie from Lauren Patton and Conor Sharkey, third place went to the very much in form Geraldine and John Masterson with 64.5 Nett, the full list of qualifiers and the draw are posted on the club noticeboard.

Ladies Golf
Last Tuesday’s Ladies event the Gallagher Cup went to Maeve Corry (22) with an excellent 41pts, the category winners were Dympna Doherty(19) with 39 pts and Noreen McNally (36) with 40pts.

Well done to Ann Sharkey’s Intermediate cup team who have again advanced to the next round after wrapping up their tie with City of Derry Ladies in convincing fashion.

In other inter club golf our Lawson Cup team under the captaincy of Sean MacIntyre have bowed out of that event despite a 15-1 home leg win on Thursday past losing the tie by a single hole on countback, the damage being done in the away leg to Black Lion G.C after poor showing at the Co.Cavan venue the previous Sunday.

Our Phair Cup team have also gone out Martin Rouse’s charges losing out to Castlehume 17-15 overall again the damage being done in their first leg match.

Captains Day
Best wishes to our Club Captain Senan Roarty for his Captain’s Day on Saturday, hopefully the weather will be kind for all the participants, all players are asked to be in good time for their tee off slot. The presentation will follow the Captains dinner at approximately 10.30pm and will be followed by music with “Friends”

There will also be music on Sunday evening with the brilliant Niall Gallagher from 7pm-10pm with the £50 bar credit draw also taking place, last weeks winner was Donal Cairns.

Congratulations to club members Paddy McCrossan, Marc Brolly, Conor Sharkey and Rory Doherty who successfully completed their 72 holes Golf marathon for MacMillan Cancer Care on Sunday raising an impressive £2500 for this great charity, the lads got a fantastic welcome on to the final green being greeted by around 70 members.

Longest Day Golf Challenge

MacMillan
Congratulations to Conor Sharkey, Rory Doherty, Marc Brolly and Patrick McCrossan for finishing their MacMillan Longest Day Golf Challenge.
Their plan was to start of in Strabane G.C. at 5am, then off to Faughan Valley for 2 rounds and back to Strabane for the last 18 holes, finishing around 9pm.
IMG_0808[1]
But their plans didn’t go as well as they would have like, they started off as planned in Strabane at 5am and then off to Faughan Valley where they were held up by a team competition, so they had to cut short the golf there, and came back to Strabane to do their last 27 holes.

DECLAN DEVINE FOODS OPEN
Last Saturday saw the largest competition entry for some time with 196 golfers taking out cards for the Declan Devine’s Frozen Foods Open. The course was playing fairly long with play from the furthest back blue markers. The day’s best return was made by Denis Porter (11) with an excellent 42pts which saw him lift the top prize, the runner up was Kevin Neeson (12) one shot back on 41pts, with John Doherty in third spot a further three shots away on 38pts Mervyn Moore (22) took fourth place also with 38pts with the ever improving Warner Mullen in fifth also on 38 pts. The gross went to Peter Doherty (5) who recorded three 2’s on the day at the 2nd.7th & 12th holes. The nines prizes went to John J Duffy and Don Callan Sen.

Fletcher Golf were the sponsors of last Thursday’s event which went to Dr Ciaran Kelly (12) with an excellent total of 63 nett despite a triple bogey 7 at the par 4 13th hole, runner up was Eamon McCay (19) who also finished with 63 nett but lost out for the top award on countback, third went to Ciaran Doherty (10) with 65 nett, Conal Cooke kept up his recent domination of the gross prizes with a level par round of 69.

Monday Open
There was a very poor entry for last Mondays open event with only 22 competitors. The winner was the very much in form Kevin McGinley with a great total of 43pts. Eddie Patton (10) was second with 40pts with Donal Cairns third also with 30pts, Keith Patterson(6) took the gross on this occasion.

In Ladies golf young Abbey Maxwell (29) took the Eileen Kerry Memorial competition with 70 nett, Maeve Corry(23) took category one with 73 nett with Mary McCrory (28) taking category 2 with 76 nett.

Well done to Anne Sharkeys Intermediate Cup team who defeated City of Derry by 5 matches to nil in last Sundays first leg played at Strabane.

Mark Sharkey’s Ulster Fourball had a convincing second leg win in their tie with Nuremore last Sunday taking the match 5-0 and easily overturning their first leg 3-2 deficit.

Martin Rouse’s Phair cup team have it all to do after their first round first leg match with Castlehume also on Sunday after only taking the slightest of advantages 8.5pts-7.5pts and will need a monumental effort from the side to progress any further.

Our Donegal Senior League side have a 5-2 advantage over close neighbours Ballybofey after Mondays first leg, in what was a close encounter.

Devines Sand and Gravel Medal

151 cards were taken out on Saturday for the Devine’s Sand and Gravel sponsored open. Heavy overnight and early morning rain on the course had threatened to put a dampner on proceedings, but thankfully the elements relented and a decent days weather ensued from the latter part of the morning onwards. Martin Patton (14) has saw his handicap soar in recent times but he put this all behind him at the weekend to record the day’s best total of 65 nett, finishing very strongly on the day with eight consecutive pars. The runner up Donal Cairns (19) also finished with a flourish coming in on one under gross for the last five holes but will regret an ugly 7 at the 13th that tarnished an otherwise excellent card, as he finished just one shot behind the eventual winner. Liam Curry (11) was another player who finished strongly to reach the podium his five closing pars elevating him into third spot and 66 nett, Club Captain Senan Roarty (13) finished in fourth spot also with 66 nett and will regret poor six, five closing two holes. Fifth went to Sean mcGonagle (13) another player who finished on 66 nett.
The categories went to Nicky Wolfe category one with 69 Nett, Hugh Byrne (17) with 71 Nett and to Eamon McCay (19) category 3 with 70 Nett. Conal Cooke has been totally dominating the gross prizes this season so far and he again obliged this time with a three over par 72.

WHATSONYOURWALL.COM
Local business Whatsonyourwall.com were the sponsors of last Thursdays open which went to long hitting player Martin Finlay (20) with an excellent 42 pts, Adrian McLaughlin (11) took the runners up spot with 40 pts and Jimmy Henderson (27) took third also with 40 pts. Junior player Kevin Gallagher (5) took this gross prize with a three over 33 pts.

AUGHRABRACK CHAPEL OPEN
There were some of the season’s best prizes to date up for grabs in the Aughrabrack Chapel Restoration Fund competition kindly sponsored by B.McNamee & Co.
Connor Sharkey(6) was one of the very early starters as he was in team action in the afternoon and his early one over par round which equated to 41pts was not bettered winning himself a beautiful Powakaddy for the first prize. Kevin McGinley (12) took the runners up spot with 40pts with Conal Cooke (2) taking third place on this occasion with a fine two under par round. Peter Doherty (5) as a result was promoted to the day’s gross winner, with the nines going to visiting players David Smyth and Padraig McAleer.

Jimmy Bruen
Our Jimmy Bruen squad under the captaincy of Aidan Boyle have advanced to the Ulster Quarter finals after an epic battle with Rockmount G.C on Sunday afternoon at Moyola Park and will meet either Lisburn or Ballycastle in the next stage. Heavy rain and thunder and lightning had threatened to end the days play but with great perseverance Strabane eventually advanced by three matches to two after a great performance special mention to Damian McGranaghan and Brian Haughey who came from two down with three to play to win at the 18th and secure a vital point.

J.B CARR
Garvin Godfrey’s J.B Carr team have also moved a stage closer after completing their tie with Castlehume in fine style at the Enniskillen Venue on Thursday past, winning the opening two matches to wrap up the tie more comfortably than expected.

Mark Sharkey’s Ulster four-ball team are also in with a great shout having taken two matches from five in their first leg away from home on Sunday at Nuremore and that tie will be decided on Sunday.

RORY’S MASALA TAKEAWAY

Rory Doherty (16) showed a significant return to some of the form he is capable off in Saturday’s Masala & Mamma Masala sponsored stableford returning the best total of the day 41pts, this despite a nervy six, five, finish but two earlier birdies at the seventh and the tenth holes more than made up for the later mistakes, and a total of 22pts on the inward nine proved to be a strong enough finish on the day. The runner up was Colin mcCafferty(14) who has been having a fantastic golfing season in this his second year, he will however regret a very short putt missed on the final green that would have seen him take the win on break of tie. Third place went to Declan O’Hare (10) with 40pts who has also been very consistent since his return from injury. Fourth went to Andrew Connolly(12) a shot back on 39pts with Sean MacIntyre (12) fifth with a steady 39pts also. Conal Cooke (2) took the gross prize with a three over par round with the nines going to Gerry Glover (17) with 22pts for the opening nine and to Brian Cairns(16) with an eye catching 25pts for the back nine.  The senior’s prize over 60’s was won by Brian Kelly with 38pts. The presentation for this event is scheduled for Sunday 8th June at 8.00pm with the presentations for The Subway Open 22nd May, T.Oscar Rollins Open 26th May and the Northern Confectionary Open 29th May also being made, all winners are asked to be in attendance.
