Club Notes – 13th May 2014

There was an element of history on Sunday, as Strabane Golf Club crowned its new Fylite Ltd Senior Scratch Cup winner, Jack Madden at the age of only 14 became by some margin the youngest ever winner of the prestigious and well established event. The previous youngest recipient of the title was none other than Portrush’s Graham McDowell aged 19 in 1999, the last Scratch cup win he had before turning professional a few months later on road to what has become an illustrious career. Many comparisons were made at the weekend by knowledgeable players who have watched both in action and the similarities are indeed many. Young Jack who plays out of Dungannon Golf Club and is tutored by former Strabane Club member, and Ulster Boys Coach, Seamus Duffy who hails from the village of Clady.
scratch cup 023 (2)Jack in 3rd place after the first 18 holes with a steady three over par 72, joint leaders were ten times winner Enda Kennedy and Strabane’s Conor Sharkey with 71 and Derry’s Keelin Quigg with 73 in 4th position tied with Strabane’s Conal Cooke. Young Jack who plays off 5 handicap at his home course held everything together really well despite the pressures of the illustrious field and despite hooking his second shot at the 10th hole into the Mourne river he managed to get up and down brilliantly to walk away with a bogey six and go on to complete a second round of 72 in ever increasing windy conditions. Enda Kennedy who through injury and work commitments has been playing very little golf this season still looked a strong favourite to take his 11th title after 13 holes where he remained on only 2 over par but a bogey from nowhere at the 14th followed by another at the 15th left him needing to pars at the last two for a play-off but a totally uncharacteristic 7 at the 17th scuppered any chance and he would go on to finish in 6th place. Jamie Foley from Letterkenny G.C. looked out of the proceedings after a first round of 76 but a brilliant second nine 69 in the tougher conditions saw him capture second place, third went to Keelin Quigg who despite a 7 at the 1st in his second round recorded a very respectable 73. Strabane’s Conal Cooke finished in 4th spot with a 74 in the second 18.

Conor Sharkey who had played exceptionally well fell away somewhat in the second round with a gross 80 but his strong earlier performance saw him collect the valuable first Nett prize with a Nett total of 139. The prize for the Longest drive in both rounds went to Ryan McGowan from Strabane.

The club captain Senan Roarty at the presentation congratulated all the winners and gave much credit to the organising team of Damian McGranaghan, Peter Doherty and David McGrath and again thanked long time Senior scratch cup Sponsor Eamon McCay from Frylite Ltd for his continued support of this great competition.

Sports Centre Open
There was an entry of 160 golfers for Saturdays Sports Centre Open which again was played in tough windy conditions with prolonged rain spells at times. The winner was James Harron (10) with a fine total of 40 pts which saw him win only on break of tie from the club Junior Captain Caolan Crawford (5) a double bogey six at the 17th hole where he had got to in one under gross destroyed the young 17 year olds chances of the win. Third went to Enda McDonnell (21) with 39pts with Michael Neeson (12) in fourth with 38 pts, Eric Reid (25) made yet another visit to the winning enclosure in fifth with 37pts.  The gross went to another junior member Kevin Gallagher (6) with 30 gross pts with the nines claimed by Warner Mullan (21) with 22pts for the first nine and to Stephen Curry (11) with 23pts for the inward nine, the seniors prize went to Jim Potts (20) with 37pts.

Last Thursdays event was The Foothills Restaurant of Gortin Open which was claimed by the last card out on the course with Gerard Bradley (20) claiming the win with 41pts, 26 of which he scored on the back nine. The runner up was Mark Gillespie (20) also with 41pts and he too had a remarkable second nine with 25pts added to his total. Brian Millar (24) has been in great form lately and had the lead for most of the day his total also of 41 saw him finish in third, Conal Cooke took another gross prize with a one under total of 68. Congratulations to Jimmy Callan who holed his 5 iron tee shot at the 16th hole to record a hole in one and win an Exclusive Boss watch, Conor Sharkey in last week’s mcGillion Motors Saturday open also managed the same feat holing a pitching wedge at the second hole.

Monday Open Stableford
Monday’s Open Stableford saw a win for club President Pat McAneny (19) with 40pts just getting the better of John Clarke (19) on break of tie, third went to visiting player David Moore (24) with 38pts, Conal Cooke again took the gross with 33 gross pts on this occasion.

Ladies Golf
Last Tuesday’s ladies event was the Camus Cup and saw a win for Imelda Doherty (32) with a runaway winning total of 66nett.  The categories went to Lauren Patton with 74 nett and to Geraldine McCrory with 71 nett.
In Ladies representative golf Rosemary Wilson’s Minor League team recorded a fine win against Moyola Park Ladies and go forward now to meet Knock G.C In the next round.
Also congratulations to Mary Duffy’s Challenge Cup team who have also advanced after a 5.5 -4.5 overall win over Belvoir Park ladies.

Best of luck to our Mixed team who are in action in the Ulster Qualifying at Letterkenny Golf Club on Sunday next.
