Club Notes – 8th April 2014

It was a notable weekend for golfers with the name Matt! with Matt Jones defeating Matt Kuchar in an epic play-off decider at the Shell Houston Open, while at home Matt Curran (17) was the man lifting the honours at the Caffe Fresco Open at Strabane heading a field of 177 players to take the event, with a commendable return of 42 pts, 21 pts on both nines giving him a first big win at the club. The runner up who like the winner also played late on in the afternoon was the ever improving Eddie Finlay (18) making a return of 41pts with long time leader Foncie McNally (15) eventually having to settle for third place also with 41pts, Sammy Devenney (19) took fourth spot thanks to an eye catching 26pts on the inward nine finishing with a total of 40pts, Michael O’Neill (20) was fifth also with 40pts. The Caffe Fresco gross prize went to young Starlet Ryan McGowan (4) with a one over par 39pts, with the nines going to Paul Bogle (13) with 22pts for the front nine and to Martin Finlay (21) who had also 22 pts for the back nine. The new Seniors prize went to Robert Bell (14) with 38pts.

The first team classic of the year took place on Sunday past with the St Mary’s Primary School PTFA Open teams. There was a great entry of 34 teams despite a miserable morning’s weather, with gales and heavy rain not adding much optimism to the proceedings, but thankfully the conditions did relent somewhat leading to a fine afternoon in which an all Ladies team combination took the main honours with a fantastic score of 97pts, Norma Brogan, Monica McGettigan, Alison Curry and Noreen McNally teaming up to take the wonderful first prize which was kindly sponsored by McGettigan’s Builders Strabane.
The runners up were Jim Harley, Maurice McGettigan, Odran McGettigan and David McLaughlin with 93 pts with Gary Duffy, Liam Patton, Ciaran Patton and Hugh Casey finishing third with 92 pts on break of tie.
Mark Gillespie won the longest drive prize on the 18th hole.
