Club Notes – 29th April 2014

Declan O’ Hare (11) was the man with his eye in on Saturday at Strabane in the Gormley’s Opticians Open Stableford returning the day’s best nett total of 42pts in excellent but windy conditions, this signalled a great return of form for a player who has been dogged with injury in this past three seasons. Declan got off to a great start with two opening birdies setting the platform for his round and giving him 22pts for the outward nine a further 20 on the inward nine with the highlight another birdie at the 17th hole set the standard that was not bettered for the rest of the day. The runner up was also a man showing great signs of improvement lately, Brian Millar (26) finished just one shot back on 41pts despite a nervy six, five finish to his round, Eric Reid (27) was also a popular prize winner beaten only on break of tie for second and will regret a blank hole at the 18th. Ciaran Doherty (11) was in fourth place with 40pts and will also rue a poor hole at the 16th where he failed to registrar any points. Donal Cairns(37) finished fifth three shots back and one of several players to return 37pts on the day. The best gross of the day 33pts came from the very much in form Ben Corry (4) with the nines going to Patsy Wilson (18) who had 23pts for the first nine and to Warner Mullen (21) with 21 pts for the back nine. The senior’s prize went to Jim Potts with 37pts. In total 174 cards were taken out for the event with the presentation set for Friday 9th May at 8.00pm sharp.

Thursday Club Final Day
Fifty nine golfers in total set off for Greencastle G.C. on Thursday past for the final day of this year’s Thursday Club series.  A better day’s weather could not have been asked for, with the golf played in glorious sunshine for the entire day, with essential early season maintenance on the greens they proved rather tricky but there was no shortage of excellent scoring on the day. The winner was Liam Curry (11) who mastered the greens particularly well in returning a fine 42pts, Liam McGinley (21) took second place with 41pts with Declan Devine (10) third with 41pts, Jim Arbuckle (18) finished fourth with 40pts with Terence McDermott (21) in fifth with 39pts.

Many thanks to Greencastle for their excellent hospitality especially to Alison for the beautiful food. The Thursday Club now takes a summer break and returns in late September.

Captains Charity
There was a Better-Ball competition played on Monday past with the proceeds going to the Captains charity which this year is Motor Neurone Disease. The competition was sponsored by Tommy Forbes and Declan Devine and in total 31 pairs participated. The winners were Denis Porter and Jimmy Wasson with a brilliant 47pts, Club Vice-Captain Pat Corry and Eric Reid were the runners up with 46pts with Hugo mcCusker and Eugene Patton in third with 45pts, many thanks to Jimmy Duncan who looked after the event.

Club Representative Golf
It wasn’t a great week for the club in representative golf with our Ulster Cup side captained by Paddy O’Kane going out at the first hurdle to Narin & Portnoo G.C, trailing by five matches to two from Saturdays away leg at the Donegal links hopes were high for Sundays return leg but despite some very good performances which saw a reverse of Saturdays scoreline Strabane eventually lost out by five holes to exit this year’s competition at a very early stage.

No joy either for our Fred Daly team who also made an early exit going down to Dungannon G.C. boys. After a very narrow home leg 4-3 win the local juniors were always up against it and despite a sterling effort in Sundays match they eventually went out by an overall scoreline of 8-6.
Stephen McCays charges will get another opportunity in the Fred Daly Plate and with a very youthful squad this year the experience should stand them in good stead for the future.

On a brighter note Mark Sharkey’s Ulster Fourball team had a resounding 5-0 away win at Silverwood G.C Lurgan and should complete the task with a minimum of fuss in this Sunday’s home leg.

Good luck to our Jimmy Bruen team captained by Aidan Boyle who are at this year’s qualifying tournament, this Sunday, at Castlehume Enniskillen.  All players should be ready to leave from the clubhouse at 7.30a.m.

Ladies Golf
The winner of last Tuesdays Easter Basket was Maeve Crowe (29) with an excellent 42pts, Maeve Corry (23) took category one with 40pts and Vice- Captain Monica McGettigan took category two with 39pts.

In last weeks mixed greensomes the husband and wife pairing of Margaret & Nicky Wolfe teamed up to post the winning total of 32pts over 13 holes, second came Geraldine McCrory and Kevin Neeson with 30pts on break of tie from third placed Mary & Noel mcCrory.

The ladies Intermediate Cup team captained by Anne Sharkey wrapped up their first round match with Clones G.C in Co.Cavan in convincing fashion on Sunday past.

There is music in the clubhouse on Sunday evening when Brian Lindsay will be entertaining from 7pm-9-pm everyone is very welcome to come along.

In the Last man Standing competition which has been running this past three months the field has been whittled down to seven from the original 560 starters with all seven successfully negotiating their path through last Saturdays tough premier league fixture list, all selections for this week’s matches should be with Brian Brolly by 9pm on Friday night.  Good luck to all that are left in pursuit of the brilliant £1000 prize.

In total a seasons best entry of 182 cards were taken out testament to the great upturn in the weather which also reflected in the superb early season condition of the course.

Club Notes – 15th April 2015

Conditions at Strabane on Saturday were extremely difficult with the course playing particularly tough in the south westerly wind that prevailed for the entire day making good scores hard to come by. Gary Duffy (10) returned the days best score to take the top prize kindly sponsored by long time club sponsors B McNamee and Co. with a steady 67 nett which was good enough on break of tie from Foncie McNally (13) who for the second consecutive week featured in the top three. Third went to John Wylie (10) with 68 nett just ahead of Ronnie Wylie(10) on the same total, Jim Malcolm (15) was the best of several returns of 69 nett to take fifth place.  The categories were won by Paddy o’Kane (8) 71 nett in Category one, Kevin Neeson(13) 69 nett in Category Two and Gerard Foley(18) with 70 nett in Category three. Club Notes – 1st April 2014

The new golf season got underway at Strabane on Saturday last, with the traditional season opener the John Kelly Stableford event with an excellent 179 cards being taken out on the day.

The winner starting off as he finished last year in excellent form was Brian Haughey (13) one of three players to record 40 pts in difficult windy conditions that saw the course play very long indeed. The runner up on the break of tie was Joey Roulstone (22) who will feel he should have won this one after a very nervy finish dropping quite a few shots over the closing holes, third went to the ever improving Hugh Byrne (19) who played very steadily throughout for his total of 40 pts. Ciaran Duffy (9) took fourth place a shot back on 39pts with Damian McGranaghan (6) in fifth with 38 pts. The gross went to Conal Cooke (1) who was round in three over par .Eddie McHugh(15) took the first nine with 22pts with John Duffy (16) winning the second nine with 22pts also.

There had been an 18 holes qualifier on the previous Saturday which was the first competition without the Winter mats in play, great credit must go to our greens staff for having the course ready despite the very wet weather we had endured throughout the previous month. The best card on the day came from Colin McCafferty (15) with 41pts despite having two blanks at the 7th and 11th holes respectively. The runner up was club Assistant Secretary Peter Doherty (5) with an excellent 39pts with Paul McGill (6) third with 36pts. The gross prize went to Ryan McGowan (4) who had 31 gross pts.

Thursday Club
The Thursday Club has reached week 10 in the second phase and unfortunately like so many other club events has been badly hampered by the heavy rainfall of the past month or so losing four days play in this phase alone. Last week’s event was played over 16 holes with Hugo McCusker the winner with a final total of 34pts nett, Denis Porter was second also with 34pts nett with Seamus McPhilemy in third place with 33 pts.

In the Golfer of the Year standings Hugo McCusker leads with 72pts one in front of Charlie Patton with 71 pts with Michael Baldrick currently third with 60 pts.

In the race to be king of the Two’s Chris McDermott and Tommy Forbes are currently tied on 6 each.

The final day is scheduled for Greencastle Golf club on Thursday 24th April and members are asked to have all back monies paid up to date by the 17th April.

Monday Club
This week’s Monday club had to be abandoned after the security alert on the course on Monday morning, the final day for this event is next Monday with the end of season meal and entertainment to follow later in the evening at 6pm.
