NEESON & KELLY ARE CLEAR WINNERS

Michael Neeson and his playing partner Brian Kelly were the clear winners of the Leo Kavanagh Winter cup sponsored by Sperrin Springs. The final was played in the worst weather conditions of the competition and that made good golf extremely difficult. Shane McLaughlin and his partner Brian Forrester had played really well to reach the final stage but just didn’t adapt to the elements and went down by a clear cut five & four margin. Third place in the event went to Conal Cooke & Donal Cairns with Neil Alcock and Chris Timoney taking fourth overall.
The two week better-ball section was won by Joe & Ciaran Doherty with Nicky Wolfe & Mark Gillespie in second place, Franke Gallagher and Andrew Connolly took third place.

Saturday sweep
Fifty-six cards were taken out on Saturday for the 15 holes sweep with the win going to the ever improving Stephen Donaghey (16) with 36 pts, Michael Neeson warmed up for Sundays match with 34 pts Nett for second with Damian Carey in third also with 34 pts, Fred McGavigan again took the gross prize with a one over par round.

Thursday Club
Conditions were very favourable for week 14 of the Thursday club with Denis Porter again topping the leader board with a whopping 39 pts over the 15 holes in play which was only two over par for his round. Ronnie Wiley took second with 35pts with Chris McDermott in third spot also with 35pts, with two weeks of the first phase to go Oliver McNally looks unstoppable in the Golfer of the Season category.

LEO KAVANAGH MEMORIAL WINTER CUP FINAL THIS SUNDAY.

Both semi-finals in the Sperrin Springs Leo Kavanagh Memorial Winter Cup took place on Sunday last and as predicted were extremely close encounters, both of the matches going to tie holes having finished all square after 18. Michael Neeson and Brian Kelly booked their place edging out their opponents Neil Alcock & Paul McLaughlin who was deputizing for Chris Timoney at the 19th hole, the match having swayed to & fro throughout. The second match was an even tighter affair finally being decided at the 20th hole. Scratch player Conal Cooke and his partner Donal Cairns were 2 up through 10 holes and looked on course to proceed, Brian Forester however used his shot at the 11th hole to reduce the arrears and a birdie two from Shane McLaughlin at the par three 12th hole levelled the tie. The golf remained of a very high standard with 17 handicapper  Brian Forrester having an excellent day on the greens and his combination moved in front at the 17th when Shane McLaughlin made par with a shot at the hole. A brilliant putt at the 18th from Cooke to make birdie, again tied the match and he again recorded a birdie 3 at the first tie hole to keep hopes alive, Forrester having made a four nett three. The match was finally closed out at the 20th hole when both Cairns and Cooke missed the green to the left and Brian Forrester sent in a fine tee shot to 8 feet with another shot up his sleeve.

The final itself will be very hard to call, but again a very close affair is expected. Meanwhile the rest of the field started two weeks of aggregate better-ball in pursuit of the minor Prizes, the best returns of the day came from Eddie Patton & Kevin Neeson with 44pts the same total as Paul Kavanagh and Eamon McGlinchey.  All the presentations will take place at 6.00pm on Sunday and will be followed by music from the brilliant Niall Gallagher until 8.30pm.

Saturday Sweep
Sixty three cards were taken out for Saturdays 15 holes sweep competition with Foncie McNally taking the win, a great start with seven consecutive pars set the 13 handicapper up for a fine total of 38 pts. The runner up who is also finding some great form was Nigel Houston (13) just one shot behind with Eddie Patton (10) getting round in four over to take third place with 36 pts, the gross went to Stephen McCay (7) with 27 gross pts.

Thursday Club week 13
Play again proceeded for week 13 of the Thursday club with Liam McGinley taking this week’s honours with 34 pts. Oliver McNally (17) looks unstoppable in the golfer of the season race, picking up his third consecutive 20pts haul and again finishing second despite a 3.5 shot penalty with 33.5 nett, Freddie Patterson took third with 33 pts. There are three counting weeks of the first phase remaining before a two week break over the festive period with Christmas Day and New Year’s Day both falling on a Thursday this year, the final day of phase one is scheduled for Thursday 8th January weather permitting.

Monday Club
Eight teams took part in this week’s Monday Club with the win going to Dermott Corry, Adrian Coyle, John McMenamin & Terence McDermott with 94.5 nett, the runners up were the three man team off Foncie McNally, Shane McLaughlin and Michael Forbes with 91 Nett, the final day for this one is Monday 15th December.

WINTER CUP SEMI-FINALS ON SUNDAY

The Leo Kavanagh Memorial Winter cup Semi-finals are down for decision this weekend with the four section winners now identified.
In Section (A) Scratch player Conal Cooke and Donal Cairns are through to the deciders after their match was cancelled on Sunday but this became irrelevant when their only challengers Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty lost out in their tie with Kevin Neeson & Eddie Patton.
They will take on the winners of section (B) Shane McLaughlin & Brian Forrester who qualified from a very close section with their win over Aidan Corry & Michael Mathers. This will be a very tight match to call with the shot holes being the deciding factor, Cooke & Cairns will certainly be favourites to progress but their opponents cannot be ruled out either.
In Section (C) probably the closest of all, Michael Neeson and Brian Kelly put last week’s disappointing performance behind them to bounce back in Sundays match with John Doherty & Francie Conwell taking all four points, they will meet Neil Alcock and Chris Timoney who ended the clear winners of this section by 6 pts finishing unbeaten on 26 pts. This one is hard to predict as Chris has been unwell over this past week and may not be fit to play, Neeson & Kelly have qualified from a more difficult section and will certainly be dangerous opponents for Alcock and whoever plays alongside him.
The rest of the non–qualifying field will play a better-ball event over the next two weeks and all are asked to participate. The presentation of this year’s Winter Cup will take place on Sunday 7th December at 6pm there are attractive Sunday lunch offers for all competitors on the day and there will be music immediately after with the fantastic Mr Niall Gallagher.

Saturday Sweep
Jason Gourley (12) was the man in form in last Saturdays 15 holes sweep returning an eye-catching 39 pts which was a very solid three over par returning 12 pars and three bogeys in his impressive round, The runner up was Michael Neeson (11) with 37 pts with Brian Cairns (18) in third with 36 pts, Stephen McCay took the gross prize with 27 gross pts.

Thursday Club
For the first time in three weeks due to the recent wet weather the Thursday Club proceeded with Denis Porter this week’s winner with a final total of 35.75 nett, the runner up was Danny Duffy (13) with 35 pts with Rory Doherty (11) in third also with 35 pts. For the first time in memory no two’s were recorded on the day which is most unusual to say the least.

Commiserations to Peter Doherty and his Donegal Senior league team who finally got to play their final on Saturday last having qualified back in August! Unfortunately it was not Strabane’s day and the senior golfers suffered a heavy defeat at Rosapenna against a very talented North-West Squad.

The winner of this weeks £50 bar credit draw was Lisa Patton.

Thanks to the fantastic crowd who came to the club on Saturday past for the Jim Devine Country night it was a memorable night for the club many thanks to Jim and his band for a marvellous performance.

Tickets are now on sale at the club bar & office for our next big show the JP Mac Johnny Cash Tribute Show featuring JP and his sister Caroline on Boxing Night this gig has been receiving rave reviews all over the country and is great value at £10, support will be from the “Forbes Sisters” and Klassix Disco.

WINTER CUP SEMI-FINAL PLACES UP FOR GRABS

This Sunday is the final week of qualification matches to identify the four semi-finalists in the Sperrin Spring Winter Cup with none of the four groups clear cut after last Sundays results, all the matches having been reduced to 13 holes with the river Mourne once again bursting its banks on to the course. Hopefully all holes will be in play for tis weekends crucial ties.
In Section (A) Conal Cooke & Donal Cairns lead the way on 19.5 pts one clear of Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty both have difficult fixtures this week but the leaders will be slight favourites to progress to the last four.
Section (B) is somewhat less straight forward with four pairings within half a point of each other, none of the four in contention play each other so all will be looking for a maximum haul of four points to keep their hopes alive.
Section (C) is also extremely close again four pairings are still in contention but the semi-final position should go to either Brian Kelly & Michael Neeson or Paul Kavanagh & Eamon McGlinchey the latter pair having made significant inroads in the past fort-night, both are tied on 16pts each.
Section (D) is the most clear cut Neil Alcock & Chris Timoney lead the way on 22 pts two clear of Frankie Connolly & Eric Reid these pairings meet each other in what will be the deciding fixture.

Play was reduced to 11 holes for last Saturdays sweep with the river holes out and the 17th being used for pre-arranged professional coaching for our juniors. 53 cards were taken out with the win going to Denis Porter (11) with 28 pts, Brian O’Kane(19) was the runner up with 27pts with third going to Declan Doherty(18) with 24 pts Fred mc Gavigan (5) was round in one over par and he took the gross prize.

There was a good entry for this week’s Monday Club team’s event with 12 teams going to post. The winners were Shane McLaughlin, Freddie Patterson, Ronnie Wiley & Liam Patton with 63.75 nett, the runners up were Niall Coulter, John Brolly & Michael Baldrick with 63 pts.

Last week’s £50 bar credit draw winner was Lady Captain Bernie O’Kane.

FLOODING RESULTS IN HOLES CLOSURES
UntitledSaturday’s play at Strabane was reduced to 13 holes when the River Mourne burst its banks on Thursday past flooding the 9th & 10th holes along the river. The winner with 30 pts was the very much in form John Brolly (18) who just got up on break of tie from Ronnie Wiley (12) with Damian Carey (14) in third place with 29 pts, Fred McGavigan(5) took the gross prize with a one over par return of 25 gross pts.
This coming Saturday will weather permitting be back to 15 holes.

No play was possible at all in the Thursday club but it should also resume with a 15 holes competition this week.

Nine teams took part in the Latest Monday teams Competition with Dermott Corry, Rory McColgan, Colin McCafferty and Kevin McGinley the winners with 87.75 nett, the runners up were Denis Porter, Jimmy Wasson, Hugh Casey and George Turner with 83 pts nett.

Sperrin Springs Winter Cup
Thankfully the flood waters had relented somewhat by Sunday to allow play in the Sperrin Springs Winter Cup to proceed as planned.
In Section (A) Conal Cooke and Donal Cairns are tied at the top of the table on 15.5 pts with Fred McGavigan & Maurice Doherty, the latter pair having beaten long time leaders Michael Kelly and Sean Macintyre on Sunday. The leading two are not drawn to meet in the section so their results against other opposition will decide the final outcome of this one.
In Section (B) the leaders also tasted defeat for the first time David Friel & George McCay going down to Joe & Ciaran Doherty only picking up half a point, as a result the Doherty Pairing have moved into a joint lead with Shane McLaughlin and Brian Forrester on 12.5 pts there are some interesting matches to come in this section with four pairings still right in contention.
Section (C) looks to be a two horse race between Michael Neeson & Brian Kelly who are tied on 15 pts with Oliver Creswell and Joe Kennedy who dropped two points on Sunday playing out a tied match. Again here the leading pairs are not scheduled to meet and their other results will be vital in determining the final outcome in a fort-nights time.
Section (D) is also between the leading two pairings with Chris Timoney and Neil Alcock just in front on 17 pts just clear of Frankie Connolly and Eric Reid these pairings are due to play each other on the final week which should decide the outcome of the section.

Ladies Golf
Congratulation to the following who won the Ladies Autumn Teams event, Anne Sharkey, Mary Gallagher, Madeline McColgan, Carole McFeeters & Monica MacIntyre finishing on 29pts, the runners up on 27pts were Mandy Coyne, Betty Kelly, Mary McCrory, Maura McBeth and Geraldine Quigley.

In the first week of the Ladies Christmas vouchers Annette Patton was the winner with 19pts, Category (1) went to Shauna Stewart with 17 pts and Category (2) to Mary Casey with 19pts.

 CHANGES IN WINTER CUP STANDINGS

With only one of the four section leaders managing a win in their ties last Sunday the top of the various tables show much change.
In Section (A) leaders Mickey Kelly and Sean MacIntyre tasted defeat for the first time just managing a half point in their tie with Kevin Neeson and Eddie Patton but still hold the narrowest of advantages on 12 pts over Conal Cooke and Donal Cairns who defeated Freddie Patterson and Michael Baldrick by three points to one.
In Section (B) David Friel and George McCay are the new leaders after their close win over Nicky Wolfe and Mark Gillespie, this section is also very close with the new leaders just in front on 11.5 pts.
Section(c) probably saw the biggest shock of the day when John Brolly and Niall Coulter surprisingly defeated the unbeaten leaders Michael Neeson and Brian Kelly taking all four points, as a result they have been replaced at the summit by Oliver Creswell and Joe Kennedy who defeated Jim Harley and Noel McCrory to move on to 13 pts.
In Section (D) the leaders Chris Timoney and Neil Alcock managed a half match against Ed Patton and Angelo McGranaghan and hold a slender lead on 13 pts to date. There are still three weeks left in the sections weather permitting before the semi-finalists can all be identified but the general consensus from participants is that the new system is working very well.

Saturday Sweep
Seventy five cards were taken out for Saturday’s sweep competition played over 15 holes, the winner in pretty tough conditions was Aidan Coyle (14) with a solid 34pts which was good enough by one from the runner up Stewart McFeeters (16) and third placed Fred McGavigan(5) both on 33 pts, the gross went to Peter Doherty (5) with 28 gross pts.

Thursday Club week 9
The second half of the first phase of the Thursday club was played last Thursday over 15 holes, Oliver McNally (17) turned the clock back with some sparkling golf to registrar an impressive 40pts and even after his deduction of 1.5 was implemented he still had a winning 38.5pts from his brother Foncie McNally (13) who returned 37pts, third went to Frank McKay (24) with a very good total of 35 pts. This week’s play weather permitting will again be over the same 15 holes with the “Loop” left out.

Monday Club
There were 10 teams entered for this week’s Monday club with the win going to Robert Bell, Shane McLaughlin, Liam Patton and Clarke Klam with 97pts, the runners up were Jimmy Callan, Paddy Doyle, Terence McGranaghan and Pat McAneny with 94.5 pts Nett.

Last week’s £50 bar credit draw winner was Nicky Wolfe. TOUGH CONDITIONS AT STRABANE

The very strong south westerly wind made conditions extremely difficult on Saturday past with the three holes along the river playing particularly tough. STORMY CONDITIONS AT STRABANE

Stormy autumn conditions had set in for the weekend’s Saturday qualifying event which still attracted a decent entry of 130 players. The best card of the day was returned by Nicky Wolfe (10) with 37 pts which was just good enough on break of tie from Jim Potts (18) who matched that total, third place went to Michael Neeson (11) who has found some late season form he returned 36 pts. The gross went to Keith Patterson (5) with 27 gross points, the nines went to Declan Lynch(12) and to Matt Curran(15). This Saturdays competition is the final qualifier from the White Markers and is also the final timesheet of the season.

The previous Saturday’s golf was played in much calmer conditions and was won by the afore mentioned Michael Neeson who was playing of 13 handicap in this one, he returned a brilliant 45 pts which was only four over par on the day and saw him win by a clear four shots from the nearest challenger Albert McNally (25) with 41 pts, Rory Doherty (12) is another who has got back to his best golf and his 40 pts saw him take third place. Patrick Kennedy (3) took the gross with a level par round with the nines going to Noel O’Kane(25) and Joe Kennedy(22).

Last week’s Thursday Club week 7  was again played over 16 holes and saw Pascal McGillian (24) take the win with 38 pts, John Brolly (21) finished second a point behind with Brian Brolly (7) in third with 37 pts.

POPULAR CAPTAINS OUTING WINNER
Captains Outing

Stephen Alexander (20) was the very popular winner of last Saturday’s Captains outing to Greencastle Golf Club, with an excellent return of 43 pts to head the fields of 131 entrants. A very modest total of 17 pts from the Sion man on the opening nine, was definitely not a sign of things to come as he found his best form ever on the back nine shooting level par for the next eight holes and despite a double bogey five at the final hole he had amassed an eye catching 26 pts for the inward nine for a total that was never likely to be matched.
The runner up was club secretary, Brian O’Kane (20), with a fine score of 41 pts that would have been good enough on most days, third place went to Willie Irvine (16) with a solid 40 pts with the very much in form John McMenamin in fourth also with 40 pts, Rory McColgan (13) took fifth, another with 40 pts, with the gross going to Fred McGavigan who was round in one over par. The Captain Senan thanked everyone who had help organize his outing, everyone who travelled to play especially in such large numbers and special thanks to the Sponsors- The Herald Newspaper, The Sports Centre and Caldwell Motor Factors and special praise for Greencastle Golf club for the use of their beautifully presented course and their excellent hospitality on the day.

Club Sweep
For those members who could not make the day away there was a qualifying club sweep which was won by Paul Kavanagh (20) with 39 pts, Aidan Langan (19) was the runner up with 37pts with Noel O’Kane third with 36 pts the gross went to Dermott Corry (12).

SATURDAY’S END OF SEASON WON BY JUNIOR PLAYER CONNOR

The summer golfing season came to an end on Saturday past with the Velux Co. Monthly Medal, which was one in fine style by 15 yr old Connor Meehan (12) another one of our highly rated junior players who put in a storming finish to take the event by two strokes, six over par to the turn his round seemed pretty ordinary but with birdies at the 14th & 16th young Connor got home in level par for the inward nine to take his first big Saturday win with an excellent 63 nett. The runner up was Donal Cairns (16) who has had a fantastic golfing season shaving an impressive six shots off his handicap, his 65 nett was good enough for second by a shot from Conal Cooke (1) who had a fantastic two under par gross round which included birdies at the 14th,15th,16th & 18th. This fantastic round capped off a wonderful season for the local postman who as a result moved to a scratch handicap for the first time ever. Stephen Alexander (20) took fourth with 68 nett with Brian Millar (23) in fifth also with 68 nett. Saturdays gross prize was claimed by Ryan McGowan (5) with 73 gross, this despite dropping three shots to par over the last three holes.
The category prize winners on Saturday were Eddie Patton (10) 68 Nett, Matt Curran (15) 68 Nett and Jimmy Coyle (25) with 70 Nett, the over 60’s prize went to Francie Devine (10) with 68 Nett. This competition was also the final qualifier for the Golfer of the Year and with none of the main contenders scoring Kevin Neeson took the title finishing on 112 pts overall. This marked a brilliant and unique double for the Neeson household as Kevin’s wife Catherine also won the Golfer of the Year 2014 in the Ladies section. The runner up in the men’s section was Donal Cairns who thanks to his second place on Saturday moved through the field from 5th to 2nd place to finish on 111 pts a solitary point in arrears.

Thursday Club week 4
The latest Thursday Club event went to Hugo mcCusker (12) with an excellent total of 43 pts the runner up was Terence McGranaghan (15) with 42 pts with Brian Haughey (11) in third place with 40pts, the best non- member return was made by Brian Forrester (18) with 41pts. This week’s event will be over 16 holes and is non- Qualifying.

Captains Outing to Greencastle

Unfortunately insufficient numbers wished to travel by coach so this has been cancelled, drivers should be aware that the main Derry Road is closed with diversions at Bready and it may be a better alternative to travel via St Johnstone. The cost for the trip is £30 which includes a three course meal, Golf & Prizes, all money must be put in an envelope and left clearly marked in the gents box by Thursday of this week. The prize presentation will take place later at the club.

HEARTBREAK IN KILDARE

The question on everyone’s lips at 5.15pm on Friday past was “How did Strabane not win that?” the answer though is simpler, when the golfing breaks go against you then it’s not your day and unfortunately for Aiden Boyle and his valiant Jimmy Bruen team this proved to be the case at Carton House against Waterford Golf Club in the All –Ireland Semi-final. In truth Strabane had made a very nervy start and were up against it early in the tie in most of the five matches but as had happened in the Ulster Semi-final they fought their way back into affairs and with a few holes to go looked to be on the way to the final. In the last game, match five, both Ciaran & Gary Duffy were in inspired form and always looked like taking the tie which they eventually did by a 4\3 margin. Damian McGranaghan and 17 years old Shay Callaghan, also took their match by a 3\2 margin. In match three the Castlederg pairing of Declan Devine & Kevin Connolly made a late surge to come from three down to only one down by the 16th tee, but a loose hole here put an end to their chances and they went down 3\2. In match two Franke Gallagher & Andrew Connolly had been four down after 11 holes and looked like suffering a heavy defeat, but they too rallied and found themselves all square after 15 holes winning four in a row, but with an element of bad fortune they also lost the par three 16th hole to go one down with two to play. Match one had always looked like being the crucial match of the tie as the day progressed. The experienced Liam Curry had been paired with late addition 15 years old, Connor McCool, in a bold call by the team Captain Aiden Boyle, the Strabane pairing found themselves three down after four holes to Waterford’s Gary Dunphy & Pat Murphy who had previously won every match they’d played by the 15th hole, young Dunphy now plays of a one handicap  having played of 7 last year and his massive ball striking gave the Leinster champions a massive advantage. However the Strabane pair took the fight to them and with some sparkling golf had tied the match by the turn. Nothing separated the two, Strabane having lost a hole and then getting it back, by the 17th tee. Strabane looked like moving ahead on this hole for the first time as it looked like the Waterford pair had gone out of bounds off the tee, however the ball was recovered still in play by centimetres and they halved the hole with pars. The 18th proved to be the cruellest blow for Strabane, Curry having found the centre of yet another fairway Conor McCool hit what looked like the shot of the day under pressure a five iron from 205 yards it made its way up the sloping green and looked to have stopped 10 feet from the pin till seconds later it agonisingly trickled off the slope and down the back to rest against the apron of the big green, the experienced Curry was forced to putt over the collar and did well to get within 8 feet but with McCool’s putt sliding past Strabane lost it at the final hole in what many onlookers described as one of the best Jimmy Bruen matches in recent times.
Coming down the last hole were Strabane’s last hopes, Andrew Connolly and Franke Gallager who were forced to attack the hole to gain the win they needed to take the match to tie holes but again lady luck deserted them and they went under by a margin of 2 down and the Tyrone men’s All Ireland hopes were at an end.
Congratulations to Waterford Golf Club who are a fine team with a good mix of experience and youth also, they went on to very comfortably take the National title on Saturday, they were  totally dominant in the final against  Munster Champions Lisselan. Hopefully great experience has been gained from a tremendous run in this year’s tournament and to win an Ulster title is a fantastic achievement that cannot be understated.

Fred Daly
Fred Daly

Commiserations also to our Fred Daly team who bowed out on Sunday to Warrenpoint G.C. at the semi-final stages in Tandragee. The boys looked to be making their way to the afternoon’s final leading in five of the seven ties but Warrenpoint finished strongly to deny Strabane who lost one match at the 19th hole and another at the 20th hole to go down narrowly 4-3. This was the last Fred Daly match for five of the starting seven as they move into senior golf next year.  The club would like to thank them for all their hard work and dedication over the years which also extends to team captain Stephen McCay who has done some sterling work with the team over this past three years but will step aside next term

Medicare Open
On the domestic front Saturday’s big event was the Medicare Open Stableford played from the blue tees. The winner was early morning starter Don Callan (22) with a fine round of 41 pts in the warm fresh conditions that prevailed, the runner up was the ever improving Hugh Byrne (16) a point behind with 40 pts, a double bogey six at the 17th hole costing him the win. Eddie Finlay (17) is another player having a really good season and he took third on this occasion also with 40 pts, Nigel Houston (13) finished in 4th place with 39 pts with Stephen Alexander in 5th with 38 pts. The gross winner was Keith Patterson with 32 gross pts which also included an eagle two at the par 4 15th hole. The nines went to John Duffy(15) with 21 pts for the outward nine and to Francie Devine (9) with 21 pts for the inward nine, the over 60’s prize went to Chris McDermott (12) with 37 pts. Next Saturday’s event the Velux Company Open is the final counting week for the Golfer of the Year competition which is narrowly lead by Kevin Neeson from Aidan Corry & Declan O’Hare, good luck to all three players as they battle for the title.

JIMMY BRUEN SQUAD AIM  FOR ALL IRELAND TITLE
All roads lead this weekend to the beautiful setting of Carton House in Maynooth Co.Kildare the national headquarters for the G.U.I where our Jimmy Bruen squad will attempt to create a piece of history and claim the first ever All-Ireland Pennant for the club.  We find ourselves in some very talented company this weekend although none of the clubs involved have actually won the title in the past, the nearest were our semi-final opponents Waterford G.C who were beaten semi-finalists as recent as 2012.  The other semi-final will be contested by Connacht champions Strandhill G.C. from Sligo, who will take on the surprise package of the provincial champions Lisselan G.C. who are a nine hole club from Clonakilty Co.Cork with less than 200 members, although they have chalked up some notable wins in the defeats of Spanish Point and Tralee. Our opponents Waterford defeated Ardee G.C. 3.5-1.5 in the Leinster semi-final and then Killeen G.C. in the final in a match that was halted mid-round due to the weather conditions on the first occasion with the players having to return the following week to complete the final which Waterford won 4-1.

013The very best of luck to Aiden Boyle and his team play well and hopefully the breaks will come our way. The semi-final match will tee off at 12.50pm on Friday all support will be most welcome.

PAT KIRK OPEN

Fourth went to Charlie Patton(16) with 38pts with fifth going to Paul McGill (6) also with 38pts. The gross prize went to Conal Cooke (1) with a level par round, the nines went to Ben Corry (5) with 20pts for the first nine and to Cahir Doherty (18) with 23 pts for the back nine.

JB.CARR LOSE IN NATIONAL FINAL
photo JB Carr

Our over 60’s JB.Carr team lost out in last Sunday’s national final at Woodenbridge Golf Club Co.Wicklow, against Adare Manor from Co.Limerick in what turned out to be a disappointing final for the Strabane side who never really got in a blow to trouble their opponents.  The match had begun relatively closely but as the game proceeded the Limerick men drew away to lead comfortably in four of the five ties and despite a gallant effort Garvin Godfrey’s men went down eventually by 3.5 matches to 1.5. The weekend had got off to a great start on Saturday morning when Strabane defeated Castlewarden Golf Club by three matches to two in a titanic struggle that seemed to be going comfortably the Tyrone men’s way until the Leinster champions came with a Titanic finish to almost snatch the tie, Maurice McGettigan and Pat Patton finally settling the match in Strabane’s favour at the 19th hole. Despite the disappointment of the final defeat the team can take great consolation from getting so far, winning the provincial title and finishing second from 176 competing clubs is no mean feat and hopefully they can go one better next time!

Dixies Bar Open
Meanwhile on the domestic front at Strabane the weekends big competition was the Dixie’s Bar Open stableford that attracted a field of 178 players, the winner was Pat McGuigan (22) with a solid 40pts which was good enough by a shot from Barry Callaghan(18) who will regret a double bogey six at the final hole where a five would have seen him win the event.  John Maxwell (11) took third also with 39pts with another of our up and coming juniors Connor Meehan(13) in fourth also with 39pts.  Peter Doherty (6) was another with 39pts and he finished in fifth position, new club Champion Keith Patterson (5) had another day to remember taking the gross prize with 33 gross pts and also becoming the 8th club member to score a hole in one this season holing his nine iron tee shot at the 12th hole. Saturday’s over 60’s prize went to Danny Duffy (13) with 37pts with the nines going to Gerry Glover (18) with 21pts for the outward nine and to Mark McCrea (10) with the same total on the inward nine. Please note that the presentation for this event is next Sunday at 8pm.
On the subject of hole in one shots congratulations also to Rory Doherty who had become the 7th member of that club this season on the previous Saturday in the Golf Store Europe Stroke event also holing his tee shot at the 12th hole.

Thursday Club Week One
A sure sign of the golfing season coming to a close was the commencement of the Thursday Club last week, there was a very encouraging entry with quite a few first time members. There was a blanket finish with the top three all returning 41 pts.  The winner was Johnny Potts (21) from Paul ‘O Hare(12) with Mark Sharkey (20) in third place, all new members are most welcome to play in the weekly event which will remain a qualifying competition until the end of September.

Monday Club
Week two of the Monday club saw Kevin Keegan, Michael Forbes, Frank McKay and Eddie McHugh take first place with 108.5 nett, the runners up were Hugo McCusker, Eugene Patton, John Shiels and Jimmy Henderson with 106 pts.

Ladies Golf
Best of luck to our ladies Tyrone & Fermanagh Betterball team who are in action in the final of that event this coming Sunday at Killymoon G.C, the Strabane Ladies secured a 15-5 pts lead from the recent home first leg and will be hopeful of retaining the title they won last year.

The winner of last Tuesday’s ladies event the Bertie Colhoun Cup was Catherine Neeson (17) with 36 pts, the category winners were Mandy Coyne (9) also with 36pts and Teresa Logue (33) with 34pts. This win also secured the Golfer of the year title for Catherine and with husband Kevin also leading the men’s golfer of the year standings a unique double could possibly be on the cards.
Last Friday was also Ladies Past Captains Day and saw Maeve Corry take this year’s award with 36pts, the runner up was Maeve Crowe with 32 pts with Annette Patton in third with 31pts.

The mixed golfing season is also rapidly coming to a close, the latest winners were Orla Quinn & Eddie Patton with 26 pts over the 10 holes in play, Geraldine McCrory and Liam McDevitt were the runners up with 25 pts with Margaret & Nicky Wolfe third with 24 pts.

It was with great sadness this week that we learnt of the death of lady member Mary Dempsey, Mary had only taken up golf  on her retirement and took great enjoyment in playing the game, we pass on our sincere condolences from everyone at Strabane Golf Club to her friends and family.

Conway Cup
Congratulations to Frankie Connolly and his Conway Cup team who had a fantastic reversal of fortunes in last Sunday’s final second leg.  Trailing by 13.5 pts to 2.5 pts to Clougher Valley the team secured the same winning margin at home to leave the tie to be eventually settled on holes won, after much deliberation it was finally established that the Strabane side had won by 2 holes to retain the trophy they also won last year.

Well done also to our Fred Daly team who have reached the Ulster Semi-finals of the Plate event with a 4.5-2.5 win over Donegal Golf Club on Sunday past, they will now meet Warrenpoint Golf Club in the Ulster finals day on Sunday 21st September at Tandragee Golf Club.

Most of this year’s club Matchplay events are at the finals stage, one that has been completed is the Jones Cup, that went the way off Nicky Patton with a good 2/1 win over Patrick McCrossan. In the Gallagher Cup, Eddie McHugh awaits the winner of the tie between Andrew Connolly and Eddie Finlay, while in the Lawson Cup Martin Finlay will take on Mark Gillespie in the final. The Worcester Cup final will be contested by Jean McGinley and Denis Porter who will take on Patricia and Dr Ciaran Kelly in that decider.

After only three weeks of the “Last Man Standing” competition only 10 players remain from an initial 315 good luck to all in pursuit of the £1000 first prize.

All members that have not yet collected their tickets for Bagatelle on Sat 27th September please do so this weekend, quite a few tickets have already been reallocated as they were not collected, the demand is extremely high for this sold out show. There will be music in the club this Friday night with Country star Trevor Loughrey who will be on stage at 10.30pm and on Sunday with Martin McColgan who makes a return visit, last week £50 bar credit draw winner was Jimmy Duncan.

KEITH IS CLUB CHAMPION 2014
Widely regarded as one of the most talented home players at Strabane, Keith Patterson(5) added this year’s Golf Store Europe Club Championship to his list of achievements in this year’s golfing season with an excellent two over par 71 gross, in difficult conditions, on Saturday past. Keith raced to the turn in level par and despite dropped shots at the 15th & 17th holes, he had done enough to secure this year’s title by a single shot from Fred McGavigan (4) who has himself been in superb form this past month, Ciaran Duffy took third place with 75 gross.
In the Club Championship nett section, Adrian McDermott (17) produced the day’s best total the early morning starter bringing in a fine score of 63 nett, which with the worsening late morning weather conditions was never likely to be challenged. Mark Neely (13) is another who has shown some great late season form and he took the runners up spot with 66 nett just ahead of Kevin Neeson (10) who moved to the top of the Season order of merit table with 16 valued golfer of the year points.  Kevin now leads the table by three points from Declan O’Hare with four qualifying competitions remaining with Donal Cairns also still in contention.
The category winners in The Golf Store Europe event were Mark Brolly (11) with 68 nett, Hugo McCusker (12) with 68 nett and Pat McGuigan (23) also with the same score.

Brian Patton Memorial Day
There was a great turnout of both members and visitors for Sunday’s Brian Patton Memorial Day event with almost 150 cards being taken out. The winner was visiting player Robert Smallwoods (12) from Faughan Valley Golf Club, where Brian also had a huge association in the clubs infancy. Robert found the front nine to his liking getting off to a fine start getting to the turn in two over par which converted to 22 pts, a steady inward nine of 18 further pts saw him post his winning total of 40pts which on the day was good enough by two pts from Ben Corry (5) with another visiting player Eddie McDermott (11) in third also with 38pts. Jimmy Bruen team Captain Aidan Boyle (6) took the gross prize with a four over 32 pts gross, Johnny Potts (21) finished fourth another with 38pts and Mark Neely took fifth with 37 pts. The nines winners were John Maxwell (11) with 21 pts for the front nine and Eamon McGlinchey (13) with the same score on the back nine.

Saffron Indian Restaurant Open
There was a decent turnout for the final Thursday Open of the season the Saffron Indian Restaurant, Fred McGavigan (5 ) again led the way with a good 39 pts again in testing conditions the north west wind that prevailed for the entire day making good scoring extremely difficult. The runner up was Junior Captain Caolan Crawford (4) a couple of shots back on 37 pts, with Peter Doherty (6) making it a trio of category one golfers in the frame, Keith Patterson (5) took the gross prize with 31 pts gross.

The Thursday Club gets underway this Thursday 4th September all members are welcome to join, a full list of rules are posted on the club noticeboard.

The first Monday Club team event got underway on Monday past with Kevin Gallagher, Stewart McFeeters, Liam McCool and Pat McGuigan the opening day winners.

CORRY TAKES THIRD AND FOURTH WINS OF THE SEASON

Dermott Corry (13) was again the man in great form at Strabane over the week, adding a third and fourth competition wins to his Summer seasons C.V.
Firstly in Saturdays W.J.Mc Cormack & Sons Open Stableford he took the win with 39pts on break of tie from Hugo McCusker (13) with Aidan Corry (11) in third spot a point away on 38pts, early morning starter Philip Miller (22) also finished with 38pts to take fourth place with Kevin Neeson (11) in fifth and also claiming 15 golfer of the year points that puts him back in that frame, Ben Corry (6) was the gross winner with 31 Gross pts. The very consistent Eddie Patton(10) took the first nine with 21pts with Paul O’Hare (12) took the back nine also with 21pts.

Mondays competition was the Tennents Open S/F which for the most part was played in particularly tough conditions, a strong North West wind and squally showers keeping good scoring to the bare minimum, but again Dermott Corry now playing off 12 handicap took the win and again on break of tie, on this occasion from Paul McGill (6) Keith Patterson (5) finished in third with 34pts with Eddie Patton picking up the gross prize, please note this competition was reduction only with no increases awarded which really shows how difficult conditions were.

Last Thursdays event was the TBF McElholm Stroke with Mickey Baldrick (18) the winner with an excellent total of 63 nett which won on the day by a clear four shots, Brian Brolly (10) took second with 67 nett with Rory Doherty (12) in third with 68 Nett, Conal Cooke took the gross prize with a three over par 72 Gross.

In inter-club Golf this week Liam Curry’s O’Hare Cup team have put themselves in sight of cup final victory, taking the home leg 12.5-3.5 pts against Castlehume G.C taking maximum points from three of the four ties played, the second leg will be played this Thursday at the Co. Fermanagh venue, good luck to all concerned.

Twenty four members travelled on last weekend trip to Westport Co.Mayo and a great golfing weekend was had by all.  The winner of the trip was Terry Doherty, with Sean Devine taking the dreaded hammer prize, many thanks to Brian Brolly and Francie Devine for organising such a great weekend.

Last weeks Mixed Competition was the annual Sausage Sizzle Barbecue greensomes with the winners Olive & Eric Reid with a great total of 30 pts over the 13 holes in play, the runners up were Annette Patton & Denis Porter with 28pts with Donna Doherty & Rory Doherty in third with 26pts. Many thanks to the barbecue chefs on the evening Kathleen McGee, Monica Patton & Keith Floyd himself Seamus McPhilemy.

Donna’s Flowerbox LTD Open.
Rosemary Wilson (26) was the winner of the ladies final open of the season taking the Donna’s Flowerbox Open with 35pts in difficult conditions. Catherine Neeson (17) was the runner up with 34pts with Geraldine McCrory (30) in third with 33pts, Jennifer Rouse (11) has slotted back into form nicely on her return from maternity leave and she took the gross prize on the day. Adeline Shiels (23) took fourth with 33 pts with the categories going to Lauren Patton 32pts, Heather Mitchell 31 pts & Annette Patton also 31pts.

The popular Monday Club team event is due to get underway this Monday and all new teams are welcome to enter. STRABANE CELEBRATE HISTORIC ULSTER TITLE

There was much cause for celebration at Strabane Golf Club on Friday evening, as the clubs Jimmy Bruen team secured an epic Ulster Final victory over the bookies favourites Galgorm Castle G.C. at Allen Park Antrim, eventually seeing out the tie by three matches to two.
The five Strabane pairs had got off to a rather nervous start trailing early on in four of the five ties, Declan Devine and Kevin Connolly in fact found themselves in all sorts of bother losing three of the opening six holes but to their credit the Castlederg men rallied with some superb foursomes golf, not only to level affairs by the 11th hole but going on to wrap up a 4\2 win having not lost another hole to their opponents.
The first match out had saw Paddy O’Kane & Liam Curry in a great match with the unbeaten Galgorm number one pairing, the Strabane duo battled back from two down early on to level the tie by the 18th hole, but an unfortunate second shot at the final hole saw the Strabane men lose 1 down to give first blood to the Co. Antrim men. It wasn’t long however before it was tied at 1-1 as some sparkling golf from Franke Gallagher & Andrew Connolly in the fourth match saw them register on the scoreboard with a fine 4\3 victory. Strabane then moved ahead when Connolly and Devine wrapped their match at the 16th hole.
Young Shay Callaghan had come into the starting line up at the semi-finals stage and he again justified his selection alongside Damien McGranaghan, the pairing overwhelming their opponents at the latter stages with some fantastic golf that saw them also win at the 16th hole by a 4/2 margin, to give Strabane Golf Club the magic total of three on the board and secure the Ulster title, the final game on the course had saw Ciaran Duffy & Gary Duffy 2 down at the 15th hole, this match was then conceded by Strabane captain Aidan Boyle to leave the final score 3-2 and saw the Ulster pennant making its way to Tyrone, where a rapturous welcome awaited the victorious team on their return where Captain Senan Roarty who had been there hitting every ball at every match gave an emotional speech congratulating the team, and their Captain, Aiden, in their tremendous achievement. Incidentally the last time Strabane were successful in this competition was exactly 30 years ago in 1984 when the club Captain was Jimmy Roarty, the current captain Senan’s father another unique achievement in Irish Golf surely?

The next step for the squad is the National Finals, which this year will be played at the luxurious Carlton House Complex in Maynooth Co.Kildare, where the Irish Open was staged in 2006. Strabane will take on Co. Waterford Golf club from Newrath in the All-Ireland Semi-finals on the 17th September.
Much fund raising will be need to be implemented in the coming weeks to help finance our success, one major step towards this is a gala Night at the Races which will take place on Friday 29th August in the clubhouse, members and friends are urged to come out in their numbers to support this venture either by sponsoring a race, buying a horse or attending on the night, a supper barbecue will also be provided with Klassix Disco and Karaoke to follow in a great fun packed night.

Strabane Training Services Open
Celebrations had eventually died down somewhat to allow Saturdays event The Strabane Training Services Open stableford to take place, albeit, in particularly tough conditions. The strong northwest breeze combined with play from the back blue markers, keeping good scoring to the bare minimum. The winner on the day was relative newcomer to the game Stephen Donaghey (17) who was the clear winner on the day by a clear three shot margin shooting an excellent 22 pts on the inward nine including a particularly tidy finish, the runner up was the very consistent Donal Cairns (17) with 37 pts, this placing has seen Donal move back into contention in the golfer of the year merit table where he now trails Declan O’Hare by only 12pts. Third on the day was the very much in form Stephen Curry (10) who added to his recent medal victory with 36pts in this one, fourth came Brian Forrester (18) who despite having an unfortunate accident at the 13th tee with his driver, battled well for 35pts, Aidan Corry took the final nett prize with 35pts also.

FARMERS HOME STABLEFORD
Conditions had again been tough for last Thursdays event The Farmers Home Open stableford which went to Martin Patton (12) with a modest winning total of 37pts, visiting player Cathal Canning (7) was the runner up also with 37pts with Peter Doherty (6) in third a shot back on 36pts, Fred McGavigan (4) took the gross prize with 31pts. Only two more Thursday opens remain this season with the Thursday club start date set for Thursday 4th September.

Monday Open
The Monday Opens are also coming to an end with only one remaining, the latest results saw John McMenamin (20) top the leader board with 39pts, Rory Doherty kept up his fine run of scores taking the runners up spot with 36pts, with Declan Lynch (13) in third also with 36 pts, the gross went to Keith Patterson with 29 gross pts. Congratulations to club competition secretary Gerard Walsh who became the sixth club member to record a hole in one this season, holing out at the par three 12th hole with a superb 6 iron stroke, Gerard will receive a superb Boss limited edition “Hole in one club” watch for his efforts.

In mixed Greensomes golf this week 22 pairs entered Wednesday nights competition played over 15 holes, the winners were Donna Doherty and Mark Sharkey with 35 pts break of tie, the runners up were Annette Patton & Oliver McNally with Catherine Neeson & Joe Elliot in third also with 35 pts.

In Ladies Golf last weeks competition was the Knockavoe School event which was a weekly competition with play & re-entry permitted on any day, the winner was Lady Captain Bernie O’Kane (19) with 35pts, the category winners were Norma Brogan (14) with 33 pts and the in form Donna Doherty (30) with 34 pts.

The entry sheet for the Captains Outing to Greencastle Golf Club on Saturday 4th October will be available this week, the outing will cost £30 which includes golf, 3 course meal at Greencastle & prizes!

Music in the clubhouse this Sunday Evening with Niall Gallagher at 7pm, plus the weekly draw for £50 bar credit, last week’s winner was Rory McColgan.

Please ensure that all ordered tickets for Bagatelle are both paid for and collected by 31st August as the demand for this sold out show is extremely high any uncollected tickets by this date will be reallocted.

We are trying to raise some much needed funds to cover some of the expense incurred.

There will be horses sold over the next few days, or if you don’t get a horse come along on the night and join in, in what should be a great night.

Jimmy Bruen Ulster Champions!!

Back Row – Franke Gallagher, Ciaran Duffy, Paddy O’Kane, Brian Haughey, Kevin Connolly, Damian McGranaghan
Front Row – Andy Connolly, Gary Duffy, Liam Curry, Aidan Boyle (Team Captain), Senan Roarty (Club Captain), Declan Devine, Shay Callaghan

Strabane Golf Club’s Jimmy Bruen Team, under the captaincy of Aidan Boyle, advanced to the Ulster Final, after a convincing win over close neighbours Faughan Valley G.C. in the semi-final.

The final was played in Allen Park Golf Course against  Galgorm G.C. on Friday 15th August.
Strabane beat Galgorm 3-2, to win the Ulster title.

The the only occasion Strabane have won this trophy was thirty years ago back in 1984 the club Captain of that year was Jimmy Roarty, the father of the present club Captain Senan Roarty, the team Captain at that time was the late Jim O’Donnell.

Club Notes – 12th August 2014

Jimmy Bruen Ulster Final on Friday
All roads lead to Allen Park Antrim for Strabane members on Friday when the club will compete in their first Jimmy Bruen Foresomes Shield Ulster final since 1984, when they take on Galgorm Castle G.C hoping to make it through to the National Finals at Carlton House on 17th September. Team captain Aidan Boyle has without doubt a very impressive squad at his disposal with a lot of very much in form players, although Galgorm Castle will definitely be more familiar with the Antrim Town course where the final will kick off at 2.40pm on Friday, the club are running a supporters bus for the occasion those interested should put their names forward as soon as possible.

J B Carr Trophy
The senior golfers of Strabane have already qualified for the national finals of their competition, the prestigious J.B.Carr Trophy which as always will be played at Woodenbridge Co.Wicklow on Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th September, this is an over 60’s greensomes competition with 176 clubs having entered originally nationwide its now whittled down to just four. Hopefully Garvin Godfrey’s men can draw on their experience in this event having also qualified for the finals in 2007 & 2008. Last Thursday’s Ulster Final match against Co.Cavan turned out to be a war of attrition and the battle of all battles, Strabane led by 4-1 from the first leg played at Strabane the previous week, and needed to secure two matches from the away leg. With all the matches extremely tight hopes were high in the Strabane camp but the advantage started to slip away losing two matches on the 18th one on the 17th and the fourth match on the 16th, Team Captain Garvin partnering Foncie McNally in the final game were dormie two up but a blip at the 17th sent this game up the last too, but the experienced Tyrone pair saw the match out with a steady par to tie the match overall. Each side had already nominated a pair to contest any play-off that might occur, Denis Porter & Oliver McNally were selected for Strabane and they too rose to the occasion with a brilliant drive from the latter and approach shot from Denis, the Cavan pairing had missed the green but still had a par putt from seven feet but couldn’t hole out to send the Strabane side triumphantly through to Woodenbridge for the third time.

PAT O’NEILL OPEN
The annual Pat O’Neill Open took place at the club on Saturday with the usual array of fantastic prizes on offer 170 cards were taken out for the event. Stephen Curry (11) was declared the winner on the day after the original leading card was disqualified being returned with no player signature, a lesson to all golfers to observe, check your card after play!! Stephen’s round of 66 nett was one of five on the same total and a multi break of tie was required to identify the final placing’s. Second place went to Declan O’Hare (6) who has been in tremendous form this season and now leads the golfer of the year standings by 28pts. John McMenamin (22) has shown great improvement this year and he too returned 66 nett to take third place, Eddie Patton (10) is another model of consistency and he took fourth on this occasion, Paddy O’Kane (8) took fifth with 67 nett. The categories went to Shane McLaughlin (10 ) Michael Neeson (13) & Jim Harley(19) all with 67 nett. Kieran o’Neill (12) took the visitors prize with 69 Nett and Enda Kennedy (-1) took the gross with a level par round of 69.

McGoldrick’s Sports
Michael Kelly (10) was in superb form last Thursday in lifting the McGoldrick’s Sports Open Stableford with an excellent total of 43 pts which won on break of tie from Jordan Arthur (7) Conor Sharkey (6) took third with 40pts with Patrick McCrossan keeping up his great season’s form to take the gross with a three over par 33pts.

Monday Open
Last week’s Monday open was won by Declan Lynch (13) with 39pts, just getting the better of Damien mcCrossan (17) on break of tie, third went to visiting player Paul Nee with 38 pts. Keith Patterson (5) took the gross prize. Congratulations to Liam Patton who holed his tee shot with a brilliant 6 iron shot at the par three 12th hole, to be the latest recipient of an exclusive Boss watch for his troubles.

Ladies Golf
Commiserations to Anne Sharkey and her Intermediate Cup team who lost out on Sunday past at Templepatrick in the Ulster Semi-final going down by four matches to one. The local ladies had looked in control at the turn leading in all five games, but with the deteriorating weather conditions and a lot off bad luck they finally lost out to Edenmore Ladies who now advance to the finals.

In Ladies competition Heather Mitchell (22) was the winner of the Bank of Ireland Stableford with a good 38pts, the category winners were Lorna Duffy with 36 pts and Donna Doherty (31) with 37 pts. Sixteen pairs played in last weeks Mixed Greensomes with Kathleen Hoynes partnering Stewart mcFeeters to top spot with 38 pts over the 15 holes, second were Mary Gallagher & Brian O’Kane with 35 pts, Orla Quinn & Sean MacIntyre were in third with 34 pts.

The club are running another Last Man Standing which gets underway on Saturday with the onset of the new premiership, entry is £10 with a guaranteed prize of £1000, all members are urged to support this fundraiser either by entering or selling a few to friends and family, the sheets are available at the bar.
