Club News 17th April 2013

Golf club Greens convenor Ben Corry (5) was the man who adjusted best to the particularly difficult and windy conditions which greeted the large field of 181 golfers especially from the back blue tees, in the B McNamee Monthly Medal on Saturday past.  Ben’s excellent return of 68nett was good enough for a three shot win, he got to the turn dropping only two shots to par and had a similar return for the inward nine despite a double bogey at the final hole although the particularly difficult pin position there destroyed quite a few cards on the day. The runner up with 71 Nett was the in form Jim Potts (19) who got the better of his playing partner Martin Gormley (15) on break of tie, the gross prize went to Cathal Patton (5) with 77 gross, fourth went to Ronnie Wiley (11) also with nett 71 and fifth to Aidan Langan (16) he too recording a nett 71.  As with all stroke competitions there will be category prizes in place of nines and Saturday’s winners in this section were Category 1 – Franke Gallagher (8)  73nett, Category 2 – Dr Paul Armstrong (17) 72 nett and Category 3- Johnny Potts (23) 72 nett.   The C.S.S for the event was 72.

Strabane AFC FryliteTeam Classic
The first team event of the year The Strabane AFC Classic was played on Sunday and attracted a decent entry of 35 teams despite the very trying weather conditions, once again high winds and heavy showers making good scoring very difficult.
The winners by a clear 5 point margin were a team who have revelled in this team format in recent years Neil Alcock, Paul McLaughlin, Mickey O’Neill and Chris Timoney with a brilliant score on the day of 99 pts, the runners up were Gerry Casey, Donal Cairns, Tommy Kelly and Sean Devine with 94 pts with Paul McGill, Michael Neeson, Maurice Doherty and Brian Kelly third back on 90 pts. The best Non-Player was Peter O’Connell with 42 pts and closest to the pin was Conor Sharkey.  Club Vice-captain Senan Roarty wished the local club continued success in their progression in N.Ireland soccer.

Thursday Club
Week 13 of the Thursday club was also played in testing conditions which reflected in the scores, the winner was Brian Brolly with 35 pts with Selwyn Taylor second also with 35 pts, Adrian mcGonagle took third with 34 pts Nett, the best Visitor was Barry Patterson with an excellent 38 pts, the C.S.S was 33 pts.
With one week to go Hugh Casey on 149 pts would seem to have the golfer of the year trophy wrapped up 19 pts clear of his nearest rival Kevin Keegan. The King of the two’s prize is still not clear-cut with Keith Patterson leading by one from Denis Porter.
The timesheet for the final day to Greencastle is available from Tommy Forbes; non-Thursday club members are welcome to go with the cost at £35.

Monday Club
The latest Monday club team event went to Robert Bell, Eddie Patton, Brian Forester and Donal Cairns.
