Club Notes – 20th March 2013

The seasons golf opener scheduled for Saturday had to be put on hold for at least another week due to the heavy frost and fog that greeted the morning golfers at Strabane on Saturday.
It is hoped that the new season can now hopefully begin next Saturday with the John Kelly Stableford although the weather forecast for the weekend would not fill one with optimism.

With the markers back on the tee’s ready for play, an 18 holes non –qualifying event played off the winter mats to the courses temporary greens was hastily arranged with almost 50 golfers competing.

There was a remarkable winning score on the day with Martin Finlay (22) returning an incredible 51 pts, Martin has worked extremely hard at his game since his golfing return and he duly served notice that he will be moving rapidly down in handicap this season. The runner up who also has played very well lately was Chris Timoney (23) also with an eye catching return of 49 pts which would surely win on any other day, third went to Neil Alcock(15) with a very solid 44 pts. The gross went to Keith Patterson who was level par for his round returning 36 gross pts.

Super-Valu Springers Cup
The Super-Valu Springers Cup concluded the previous week with “The Four boys” holding on to win by two points, Martin Keyes, Brendan O’Neill, Lyndsay Boyd and Paul O’Neill had played very consistently in all the different formats the team event through up, and ran out deserving winners from “The Callaway Kids” Freddie Patterson, John Brolly, Ronan Foley and Michael Baldrick, securing second place from the fast finishing Facebook Friends who rallied well in the final week to post the best score of the day and take third position.
The presentation for this event is on Easter Saturday 30th March where a two course hot buffet will be available for all competitors and their guests plus any club members who would like to attend, the cost is a very reasonable £10 p.p and includes music with a brilliant new band to the Club “Ellison Place” a sheet has been posted for all those wishing to attend.

The Thursday club has now passed week 9 of the second phase with the final day confirmed for Greencastle Golf Club on Thursday 25th April.  Last weeks winner was Pascal McGillian, who has had a remarkable winter season despite carrying a handicap penalty of 3.5pts.  Pascal still led the field with 36.5nett with Hugo McCusker the runner up with 36.25 nett, with Eugene Patton, third, with 36 pts,

The best visitor, non Thursday club member, was John Clarke with 37 pts. In the Golfer of the Year table Kevin Keegan leads the way with 89 pts from Oliver McNally on 83 pts and Hugh Casey on 81 pts.

The King of the two’s table is currently topped by Keith Patterson with six two’s so far.

Monday Club
There was a good turnout for the Bank Holiday Monday club event with 13 teams participating despite the inclement weather, the winners were Nicky Wolfe, Martin Patton, Brian Cairns and Mark Gillespie with 80 pts.

Ladies Golf
The first Ladies singles event was played on Tuesday past and saw Monica McGettigan win the R.N..L.I event with 39 pts, the winner of category one was Olive Turner with 38 pts with Laura McCay taking category two also with 38 pts.
