STRABANE GOLF

The recent upturn in the weather has seen the condition of the course improve dramatically in this past week with a definite increase in numbers anxious to get some good preparation for the new season which is now only three weeks away.

There was an excellent entry for last Saturdays 15 holes event with over 70 cards being taken out. The winner who just seems to improve with age was veteran Jimmy Coyle (22) with an excellent 37 pts finishing just ahead of new competition secretary Kevin McGinley (10) on countback, third went to Johnny Potts (22) a shot further back on 36 pts, the gross was won by Paul McGill (7) with 26 gross pts.

The previous Saturdays event had also a similar entry and saw a runaway win for the fast improving Mark Gillespie who has started to take his prowess on the cricket pitch on to the golf course and he recorded the Winter Seasons best score to date with 43 pts over the 15 holes playing off (19), to get home by a clear 4 shots from the runner up Martin Keyes (22) with Stewart mcFeeters (17) taking third place with 37 pts. The gross on this occasion went to Denis Porter with 27 gross pts.

The Super Valu Springers event thankfully resumed last Sunday after a second week lost to the wet weather, this weeks format was Greensomes, it is great to see such a large entry for the event with 25 teams participating in the competition.

The summit of the table remains very competitive with several teams still in with a realistic chance of the honours, just out in front are “The Cowboys plus 1” with an aggregate total of 133 pts, the team are

Cathal McLaughlin,Nicky Wolfe, Mark Gillespie and Donal Cairns, they lead the second placed team ”The Callaway Kids” by 1.5pts Freddie Patterson, John Brolly, Michael Baldrick and Ronan Foley will be hoping to overturn that small deficit. Currently in third place only a further 0.5 pts behind are “Plumbers Mate ”Martin mcCallion,

Sean Elliot, Kevin o’Gorman and John Hegarty still well in contention with three weeks to go, this weeks format will again be Greensomes with reverse partnerships from last Sunday pairing up.

Last Sundays sweep went to Ryan McGowan who teamed up with Dermott Corry to record an excellent 46 pts with Freddie Patterson and John Brolly second on countback, in third were the pairing of Martin Elliot and Michael Forbes (sen) with 45 pts.

A sheet has been posted on the noticeboard about the presentation of this event which is scheduled for Sat 30th March with a two course hot Buffet at a cost of £10 per player being planned if enough teams are interested, please enter your name if you are attending as a decision whether to go ahead will be taken in the next two weeks.

Finally on a sad note we would like to send our deepest condolences to the family of the Late Felix McCrossan who died after a long illness, Felix was an institution for sport especially soccer in our town
