SHARKEY & BROLLY TAKE LEO KAVANAGH WINTER CUP IN STYLE.

The Leo Kavanagh Memorial Winter Cup is in new hands this weekend with Conor Sharkey and Mark Brolly taking the honours in Last Sundays Final against Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty by a comfortable margin of 4&3. The quartet had met in the final group stage with the latter pair coming out top on that occasion but not this time as Sharkey and Brolly led from the front with birdies at the 5th & 7th to go to the turn 3up, Maurice Doherty put his shot at the 11th to good use reducing the deficit to two but with Fred McGavigan uncharistically missing great chance to reduce the margin to the minimum the momentum again swung back to their opponents and they took full advantage with a tap in birdie for Sharkey at the 13th and another birdie to follow at the 14th left the match “dormie” with a par at the 15th securing the match and this year’s title.

In the third and fourth place play- off Foncie McNally and Brian Forrester got the better off Francie Conwell and John Doherty. The other prizes in Section (A) went to Freddie Patterson and Michael Baldrick and Keith Patterson and Billy Doherty, with Eamon McGlinchey and Paul Kavanagh and Noel McCrory and Liam McDevitt winning the minor awards in section (b).

Saturday Sweep
The weather again stayed unseasonally pleasant for Saturdays competition a 15 holes sweep,  Martin Finlay took first place with an excellent return of 38 pts, competition secretary Kevin McGinley continued his blistering close season form with a brilliant level par 40 pts which was reduced to 37 Nett to finish as the runner up with John McMenamin taking third with 36 pts , the gross went to Paul McGill.

Thursday Club Week 11
Denis Porter made it a notable double in this week’s Thursday Club winning for the second consecutive week the ten handicapper recording an excellent 38 pts over the 15 holes in play, leaving him on a winning 37 pts nett, the runner up was Hugo McCusker with 37 pts which was reduced to 34.5 pts nett, third place went to Club Captain Dr Ciaran Kelly with 34pts. Winter Cup Final on Sunday

The destination of the Leo Kavanagh Winter Cup will be decided on Sunday when the top two qualifiers from Section (A) will meet after their respective semi-final wins at the weekend. Fred McGavigan & Maurice Doherty overcame the challenge of Foncie McNally and Brian Forrester after a close tussle throughout finishing the stronger to eventually win the match 2up, winning the final three holes to reach the final.
In the other semi-final again it went to the final hole before Conor Sharkey and Mark Brolly got the better of John Doherty and Francie Conwell, Sharkey doing well to get down in two from the front of the green to close out the game which by all accounts could have went either way. Sunday’s final will be a repeat of their fixture last week which saw McGavigan and Doherty win comfortably, but with the top award at stake this should, on paper, be a much closer contest.

Thursday Club Week 10

LEO KAVANAGH WINTER CUP REACHES SEMI- FINALS

The Leo Kavanagh Memorial Winter Cup competition has reached the semi final stages with the qualifiers now identified after a very close tussle which saw four or five pairs still in with a chance going into the final qualification Sunday.
In Section A, leaders Connor Sharkey and Mark Brolly have won the section despite losing for the first time on Sunday at the hands off Fred mcGavigan and Maurice Doherty who played brilliant golf on the day overwhelming their opponents and looked at one stage likely to take all four points, but the leaders rallied to take the inward nine and take a point from the fixture that saw them hold on to qualify as group leaders, Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty’s win was also good enough to see that duo qualify as runners up after Freddie Patterson and Michael Baldrick lost their tie with Aidan Corry and Jason Gourley where a victory would have seen them advance.
In Section B, Foncie McNally and Brian Forrester returned to winning ways after a hiccup last week taking three points from their match with Neil Alcock and Mickey o’Neill to go through as table toppers on 19 pts, John Doherty and Francie Conwell finished the group as the in- form partnership after gaining zero points in week one the rallied to win their next five matches to qualify as group runners up with Eamon McGlinchey and Paul Kavanagh losing their game on Sunday.

There were 18 pairs entered in last Wednesday’s mixed Greensomes with the honours going to Mary and Noel McCrory with 39 pts, Lady President Mary Duffy and Conor Sharkey were the runners up with 38.5 pts.
Please note that there is not a timesheet in operation for the Medicare mixed Open next Wednesday and players may start at various holes as normal.
Ulster Senior Cup
The Ulster Senior cup regional Semi final was held on Sunday Morning at the club with Strabane taking on Rosapenna, although eventually going out the Strabane lads gave a great show and were very unlucky not to advance to the afternoon final, two matches losing at the final hole. City of Derry defeated Portstewart GC in the other match with Rosapenna with three locals in their squad went on to wrap up the afternoon encounter quite comfortably by four matches to one and we wish them further success for the Ulster Quarter Finals.
Our Phair Cup team have also gone out of that event losing out to Omagh GC last Monday despite a good away performance the damage had been done in the home leg and was irretrievable.
Better news however of Aidan Coyle’s Lawson cup who have advanced to the semi-final after a great performance against close neighbours Newtownstewart in Fridays away leg to make it through 17-15 overall.
Our Donegal League team are in with a great chance also of advancing to the semi-finals of that event securing two matches on Monday’s away leg at the Donegal venue, the return leg is this Friday at Strabane.
Open Week begins on Sunday with the traditional opener the Frylite open teams a timesheet is in operation for the event.

BUSY WEEK AT STRABANE IN BUILD UP TO CAPTAINS DAY

The week in the lead up to DR Ciaran Kelly’s Captains day which takes place this coming Saturday has been a very busy one on the Golf Course with several competitions taking place.
Saturdays event was sponsored by MK’S Bar and despite some damp squally conditions it still attracted an entry of 150 golfers.
The winner was Damian McCrossan (19) who showed a return to better form posting an excellent 41 pts on a difficult day for good scoring, the runner up was the in form Joe Elliot (16) who followed up last Mondays eye catching performance with another good 40 pts, leaving him subject to the new exceptional play rule which further reduced his handicap by a further two shots leaving him of 12 handicap a full 6 shots less than last week!
In third was Nicky Patton (7) also with 40 pts with Gerry Casey in fourth with 39 pts; Martin Rouse (9) took fifth place with 38 pts
Enough to reduce his handicap to single figures for the first time. The gross winner was Cathal Patton (5) with a three over par 33 pts; Noel O’Kane (28) took the first nine with 21 pts with Frankie Connolly (24) taking the back nine also with 21 pts.
Thursday Open
Jim Malcolm (17) took last Thursdays Open with an excellent 44 pts with Keith Patterson (5) the runner up with 43 pts which was in fact a brilliant two under par gross round, in third was Martin Elliot also with 43 pts with the Gross going to Fred McGavigan (6) with a one under par round of 37 gross pts. The Hugh Harley Cup that had been scheduled for Thursday will now be played on Thursday 25th July

In Club Representative Golf this week our Junior Cup team continue to fly the flag with a good 4-1 win over close neighbours Newtownstewart at Killymoon G.C .to advance to the Last 16 in Ulster. Not such good news to report of Conor Sharkey’s Donegal League Junior Squad who despite building up a 6-1 home leg advantage went down by the same score at Buncrana G.C and lost in a play-off. Aidan Coyle’s Lawson cup team have only a very slender advantage over Newtownstewart taking Sunday Mornings first leg by 8.5-7.5 and will have their work cut out to advance further in this one, also in major bother are Chris McDermott’s Phair cup team who lost the home leg to Omagh golf club by 11.5 –4.5 and will need a major reversal of fortunes in this event.
In Ladies Team golf Rosemary Wilson’s Minor Cup team have a slender 3.5 pts –1.5 pts to protect after their home leg with Narin & Portnoo G.C.

Ladies Gallagher Cup
Jennifer Rouse was the runaway winner in last weeks ladies event the Gallagher cup with an excellent 41 pts, Heather Mitchell took category one with 36 pts with Olive Reid taking category two with 36 pts also.

Captains Mixed Foursomes
Dr Ciaran Kelly’s Captains week got off to a wet and blustery start for the traditional Captains Mixed Foursomes which was reduced to 15 holes because of the morning conditions, thankfully though the weather relented somewhat and the competition was successfully completed, the winners were Anne Sharkey and Denis Porter with 32 pts with Jennifer Rouse and Brian O’Kane the runners up with 31pts Geraldine McCrory and Martin Rouse took third also with 31 pts with the gross going to Catherine Neeson and President Francie Devine.
Worcester Cup pairings remaining in that competition should note that remaining first round match-play fixtures must be played by 30th June.

Barry Reid recently became the fifth member in the hole in one club in recent weeks holing out at the Par three 12th hole with the perfect 9 iron shot during the St Pats GAA event, Barry is the latest member to secure a beautiful Boss Watch for his efforts.

Also finishing on a very sad note , the club lost one of its long serving members last weekend with the death of Pat Gallagher Owenreagh drive, Pat was a great character and a great supporter of the club, our sincere condolences are sent to Ruby and to all the Gallagher family may he rest in peace.

SHARKEY ON SONG

Conor Sharkey (6) was the man on form in Saturdays Devine’s Frozen foods competition returning a fantastic one over par round in terrible conditions, with the heavy morning rain threatening the completion of the event, thankfully the elements relented somewhat in mid afternoon and the event was able to be completed as scheduled. Conor’s winning total of Nett 64 was good enough on the day by a clear three strokes a great effort by one of the clubs lower handicappers, the runner up on the day was immediate Past Captain Sean Macintyre (13) with Nett 67 just ahead of Junior Member Caolan Crawford( 7) also with the same total, young Caolan has been in really impressive form this season and a very successful Summer season is predicted. STRABANE HOSTS ULSTER SENIOR CUP QUALIFYING EVENT

For the second time in four years Strabane Golf Club was chosen to be one of the eight Ulster Qualifying venues and once again the course was turned out in pristine condition with many golfers paying special compliments to the fantastic condition of the greens on the day. In a blustery and sometimes showery day good scoring was tough to say the least, Strabane were out in the first match of the day and after losing a few senior players were not really expected to qualify in the senior cup company they found themselves in, however the local lads rallied well and stuck at the task in hand to make the top four in a nail biting conclusion, North west G.C almost taking the final spot. The top Qualifiers
On a brilliant 298 were Rosapenna G.C with Enda and Patrick Kennedy in their ranks they used their vast course knowledge to great advantage, next were City of Derry followed by Portstewart with the local Strabane side fourth on 308. Ulster Cup
Joe Doherty’s Ulster Cup team have exited that competition after defeat to Cairndhu G.C, the damage all being done in the away leg where they lost all seven matches and despite a brave effort to retrieve the tie they bowed out with the match finishing early.
Better news for Brian o’Kane’s Ulster Fourball side who have reached round three of that event for the first time in several years after seeing of the challenge of Aughnacloy G.C on Sunday, trailing 3.5 to 1.5 matches from the away leg the home team found some great form to overwhelm their opponents in a comfortable 5-0 home leg victory.

The next round is matchplay at Strabane on Sun 30th June where Rosapenna will play Strabane and City of Derry will take on Portstewart with the two winners meeting in the afternoon final.

HEAVY RAIN STOPS PLAY

Saturdays highlight event the Mark James Open fell victim to the

Continuing poor summer weather with lashing rain making it impossible for play to proceed and the competition was abandoned for the day just after lunchtime. This event will now be played as part of Open Week on Friday 12th July.

Thursdays rescheduled competition the Foothill’s Restaurant barely survived the torrents too with the downpours hitting the course just after 6pm leaving it almost impossible for play to continue, but continue it did with a few brave souls battling the elements and completing their rounds .The winner was one of the mornings early starters Brian Brolly (11) who has been showing a steady improvement in form this season and his 40 pts was good enough on break of tie from Mark Bradley (18) now playing out of Letterkenny G.C who was one of the evenings late finishers, third went to Conor Sharkey (7) with a very steady 39 pts with the Gross going to Caolan Crawford (7) with 32 gross pts, the C.S.S for this event was 70-35 pts which reflected how difficult the conditions were.

Shamrocks team Classic

The Shamrocks Teams classic was able to proceed on Sunday despite the flooding of the course on the previous day the greens were able to be cut and the course presented in amazing condition considering what it had endured in the previous days, much praise again to our magnificent Greens staff for this.

The winners were in the penultimate Fourball of the day returning an excellent 102 pts were Denis Porter, Declan McDonnell, Kevin Keegan and Michael Neeson, the runners up were the long time leaders Caolan Crawford, Eoin O’Neill, Paul Houston and Johnny Gallagher with 99 pts, with third going to Aiden Corry, Oliver Creswell, Liam mcDevitt and John Doherty with 97pts.

The longest drive at the 18th hole went to Caolan Crawford.

In the junior singles Patrick McGranaghan was the winner with Shaun McCall ion the runner up.

TOPAZ MONDAY OPEN

The Monday Opens returned on Monday past and will now continue until the end of August, this week’s event was kindly sponsored by Topaz. First prize went to Jimmy Callan (12) with 40 pts with Patrick McCrossan (7) the runner up with 39 pts with Billy (Box) Doherty in third place with 38 pts, The Gross went to visiting player Max Thallon (4) with 30 gross pts.

Congratulations to our Irish Mixed foursome’s team who qualified for the Match play stages of that event at Foyle Golf club and will now meet Sunday’s hosts at a neutral venue to be decided.

Our Ulster Cup team suffered a heavy defeat at Cairndu G.G going down by 7 matches to nil, the result was not as clear cut as the score line would suggest with Two matches losing at the last and two at the 17th, the return leg is this Sunday.

Entertainment

Saturday night will see the return to the Golf Club of one of the country’s top live bands “The Heads of State” the lads recently played at the club at Tommy’s Birthday bash receiving many compliments on their fantastic music, admission is only £4 with Klassix disco supplying the support.

ENDA TAKES 10TH STRABANE SCRATCH CUP.

Local golfing circles were again dominated by Enda Kennedy who for the 10th time took the Strabane Golf Club Scratch cup which was kindly sponsored by Local Company Frylite LTD.

As in recent years again the weather was a major factor as a strong north west wind coupled with heavy prolonged showers for most of the day made good scoring almost impossible and if it had not been for the diligence of the organising committee sweeping the water of greens it is somewhat doubtful weather play could have continued with the deluge of water falling persistently  upon it .

There was however a great renaissance in this years Scratch cup with Damian mcGranaghan and his hard working committee going all out top attract a top field in both the Senior and junior sections with a lot of great prizes being offered on the day, a total of 98  entries were received with only about 10 golfers not showing due to the conditions which still made the final entry of 88 the best in recent years.

Enda Kennedy had gone out in the final fourball in round one in strong company which include City of Derry’s Kealan Quigg who has been in sparkling form at his home course in recent weeks  like Enda winning a nett competition recently with his gross score of seven under par, and it was the Derry man who led after round one with the best score of the day a one over par 70 which was one shot ahead of the Strabane man Kennedy who this year was playing out of Rosapenna Golf club. however with the weather deteriorating even further at the beginning of the second round Quigg’s challenge seemed to wane somewhat and he would eventually sign for a nine over 78. By the 10th hole Kennedy had built a two shot lead and although Lindsay and Morris kept their challenge going awaiting any major mistakes from the experienced Strabane man, an uncharacteristic bogey six looked to have opened the door for Belvoir Park scratch player Andrew Morris who with par at the 17th hole lay only one shot adrift playing the last, Kennedy went slightly long at the last leaving an awkward chip from the back left apron and with Morris nicely on the green with a 20 foot attempt to come for birdie nothing was decided, Kennedy was first to play and his deft chip stayed four feet above the hole, Morris feeling he would need to hole his putt to force a playoff went too strong narrowly missing the cup but rolled on some 10 feet downhill, unfortunately for him he missed the return leaving Enda to tidy up for par to eventually win by two on 146  and record an historic 23rd Scratch cup win of his golfing career. James Lindsay with par at the last finished as the runner up on break of tie from Andrew Morris with Kealan Quigg next also with the same total of 148

In the Junior section of the Frylite event Freddie Patterson took the plaudits with a great total off 157 with Conor Sharkey the runner up on 160. The Captain thanked the Sponsor Mr Eamon mcCay for his continued invaluable support and paid great tribute to Damian mcGranaghan, Peter Doherty and David McGrath for their superb organisation and paid special mention to Paul Mc Fadden and his Greens staff for presenting the course in such great condition despite the recent inclement weather and many players agreed with these sentiments adding the the greens are probably the best in Ireland at present.

Full Results can be found on the SGC scratch cup facebook page or on the clubs website.

SPORTS CENTRE OPEN

Saturdays event was the Sports Centre Open highly regarded as one of the clubs leading competitions .Conditions were better than Sunday but were still extremely tough with none of the 185 competitors managing to break par on the day from the Blue Markers. The winner was Patsy McHugh (16) who won on break of tie with an excellent 69 Nett just taking the honours from runner up Mark Neely (12) and Oliver Creswell (10) who finished on the same total. Martin Rouse (11) finished in 4th with 70 Nett with Junior player Eoin O’Neill (10) in 5th also with 70 Nett. The Categories went to Patrick mcCrossan (8) 71 Nett,Maurice Doherty (17) 70 Nett and to Joe Kennedy( 25) also with 70 Nett, the gross went to Patrick Kennedy(1) with a six over 75.
