Club Notes – 30th October 2012

WINTER CUP PLAY HALTED

The heavy early afternoon rain on Sunday put paid to any chances of completing the matches on week 2 of The Sperrin Springs Winter Cup.  A few of the earlier matches had been completed but they must all be replayed next Sunday when hopefully conditions will be much better.  The shot of the day of the golf that was played went to Stephen McCay who aced the par three 16th hole playing a perfect 6 iron shot.

Saturday Stableford
Saturdays planned stableford event was also a victim of the weather with the early morning frost leaving the greens unplayable, and as a result the temporary winter greens were in use, this as expected led to a much smaller than expected entry with the competition reverting to a Saturday Sweep non-qualifying event. Off the 63 cards that were taken out Foncie McNally (15) led the field home with a good 42 pts winning on break of tie from Aidan Corry (10) with John J Duffy in third with 41 pts.

Next weeks event will be a 15 holes Stableford with the new winter handicap system in operation, further details of this are available from the club web site.

Thursday Club
Week four of the Thursday Club did proceed as planned with Brian Haughey the winner with 40pts over the 16 holes in play, club vice-Captain Ciaran Kelly was the runner up with 39pts with Gerry Quinn taking third place with 38pts.

The early leader in the Golfer of the Year stakes is Dennis Porter from Oliver McNally in second place.

The weekly Club Quiz will start back on Thursday night 7th November beginning at 10.00pm.

Acoustic Night
The club are hosting a brilliant Unplugged Acoustic Night this Friday night at 9.00pm with all the proceeds going to the Oscar Knox appeal.  Some of the town’s best live acts are kindly giving up their time to be there and it would be great to see a big turnout of club members to support this great cause.

Young Oscar has recently returned from Philadelphia after severe complications in his treatment and this have left his family with reported medical bills in excess off £400,000 so continued fundraising is essential.

“The Three Fivers” Bobby, Brian and Terry will be in the club on Sunday evening from 6-30pm- 8-30pm everyone very welcome!!

Saturday Winter Golf Rules

Saturday Winter Golf – Non Qualifying

The following will be trialled for Saturday non-qualifying until the end of December 2012. A points deduction system for all of the prize winners will be applied as shown below.

Newcomer Sean wins Mc Goldrick’s Sports Open.

The golfing seasons final Saturday open the Mc Goldrick’s Sports Open was finally completed on Saturday last at Strabane at the third time of asking, having previously fallen victim to the heavy rain on the two previous scheduled occasions, thankfully conditions on the day were near perfect although the heavy underfoot conditions in certain places made the course once again play to its full length.
The winner on Saturday was relative newcomer Sean Elliot (18) who has been threatening to return a big score lately having won several nines prizes in recent weeks, Sean’s card registered an impressive 43pts and was good enough on the day by a clear three shot margin from the runner up the very consistent Damien Carey (13) with 40 pts with Gerard “Skipper” Mullen who was unfortunate to lose a ball at the last hole just off the fairway on his way to 39 pts, Kevin Connolly (13) took fourth place with 38 pts with Frankie Houston (15) completing the nett prize winners with 37 pts.  The gross prize went to Patrick Kennedy (2) with a one over par return of 35 gross pts, with the nines going to Michael Baldrick (17) with 22 pts for the outward nine and to junior member Eoin O’Neill (9) with 21 pts for the inward nine, in total 145 cards were entered on the day which was an excellent entry for so late in the golfing calendar.

Chris “Chipper” McDermott(11) rolled back the clock on Saturday past to record a fine victory in the Fletcher Golf Open with an excellent 41 pts in breezy conditions.  Having looked set to win the previous week until a disastrous 15th hole Chris, made no mistake on this occasion closing out his round with a strong finish to take the honours by a shot from Eamon McGlinchey (17) who has been having a very successful first year, Cathal Patton (5) took third position with 38 pts with Paul Gallagher (8) taking fourth and Cathal McLaughlin taking fifth both with 38 pts also, Saturdays gross prize went to Stephen McCay (5) with 32 gross pts, the nines went to Mickey Neeson with 22 pts for the outward nine and to Neil Alcock who had 21 pts for the inward nine, the presentation for this event is on Fri 5th October at 7.30pm sharp.

What’s on your Wall Open
The club Captain Sean MacIntyre showed a welcome return to form in Thursdays Open event, kindly sponsored by local Company, What’s on Your Wall, Sean’s return of 43 pts was an excellent total on the day and was good enough by a shot from the in form Robert Bell (13) who in turn was a further shot ahead of third placed Kevin McGinley (11) with 41 pts, the gross went to Peter Doherty (5) with 31 gross pts.
