Club Notes – 28th August 2012


There was a great entry from the Ladies branch for Mrs Teresa Casey’s Lady Presidents Day last Tuesday, which was played in very windy but thankfully mostly dry conditions, the very popular winner was Rosemary Wilson (24) who returned the best of the day 71 nett to win by a shot from one of her playing partners Teresa Logue (32), Shauna Stewart (13) took third place with a very steady 73 nett with Lauren Patton (16) taking the gross prize with 89 gross, the categories went to Catherine Neeson (19) Cat 1 with 73 nett, Cat 2 Caroline Connolly (25) 74 nett and to Kathleen Hoynes Cat 3 (36) with 73 Nett.

Other Winners: 1st nine Bernie O’Kane (18) 34 nett, 2nd Nine Jennifer Rouse (18) 36 nett, Committee prize Maeve Crowe 77 nett, Best Granny Mary McGuigan 78 nett, Senior Lady Rita Mac Lochlainn 77 nett, Best Novice Monica MacIntyre and best Visitor Lorna Armstrong 74 nett.
The Lady President spoke very eloquently at her presentation thanking all who had played and gave great thanks to all who had made her year a very special one to date.

Saturday’s big event was the Pat Kirk Motors Ltd Open which attracted a great field of over 150 players, the winner on the day was Andrew Connolly (12) who has been making great strides in this past year in golf his return of 39 pts on was good enough on break of tie to pip the runner up Dermott Cairns (16) with Francie Conwell (20) in third place with 38pts just ahead of Gerard Stewart (20) also on break of tie with James Harron (9) in fifth also with 38pts, the gross prize went on this occasion to Patrick Kennedy (2) with 35 gross pts with the nines going to Noel McCrory (15) with 21pts for the outward nine and to Martin Rouse (10) with 23 pts for the inward nine.

TBF McElholm Thursday Open
There was a very good midweek entry for last Thursday’s Open sponsored by TBF McElholm Accountants with over 100 cards being taken out. The winner was Dr Frank Friel (22) who turned back the clock playing his best golf for some time in compiling an excellent 41pts which was good enough on the day by a clear four pts from the runner up Bob McCurry (15) with 37pts with Stewart McFeeters (16) in third also with 37 pts, Ronan Foley was again in the prizes this time winning the gross prize with 33pts.

Cystic Fibrosis Ladies and Gents Open
Sundays event had been rearranged from a team classic to a Ladies and Gents Open and was a very successful day for the local Sion Mills branch of the Cystic Fibrosis Charity.
The best card in the men’s section was returned by Freddie Patterson (7) with a brilliant early morning score of 43 pts that was never likely to be surpassed, he went on to win by three pts from the runner up Noel McCrory (15) with 40 pts just ahead of Ben Corry (5) also with 40 pts, Chris Timoney took fourth with 39 pts with the best visitor going to Garrick Wood also with 39 pts, the gross was again won by Patrick Kennedy (2) with an excellent one over par round.

In the Ladies section Caroline Connolly was the winner with 35 pts just ahead of Lorna Duffy also with 35 pts.

Mixed Foursomes
Last Wednesdays mixed event was a team format and was won by Caroline Connolly and Declan O’Hare who partnered Roisin Corry and Frankie Connolly to a winning 42 pts, the runners up were Catherine Neeson and Club Captain Sean MacIntyre who were paired with Lady Captain Noreen McNally and Gerard Walsh returning 41 pts.

Juniors News
Latest Junior Boys results 1st Rory Kelly, Cat 1 Mathew Campbell ,Cat 2 Marc Canning and Cat 3 Adohan Gormley.

Our junior under 16 Donegal youths team have bowed out of that competition in controversial circumstances having won the match overall a confusion in handicaps in the away leg led to disqualification from the event.

Junior Girls
Lovely Little Something event- the winner was Abbey Maxwell, Cat 1 went to Hannah McCrory and Cat 2 went to Zara McLaughlin.

In the Jean Gillespie event the winner was Hannah McCrory with Cat 1 going to Rachel McNally and Cat 2 going to Emer McNally,

The back to school competition is this Friday evening at 7pm.

Inter Club Golf
Our Donegal Senior League team took five matches from seven in the first leg of their encounter with Rosapenna GC at home on Friday evening a score that will give Damian McGranaghan’s charges a fighting chance in the return leg.

Garvan Godfreys O’Hare Cup team have built up an 11-5 advantage after the first leg of their final against Castlehume GC and still will have some work to do to retain their Tyrone and Fermanagh title.

Good luck this weekend to our Jimmy Carroll senior squad who travel to Westmanstown Co. Dublin this weekend to compete in the provincial finals.

Last Mondays McGoldrick Sports Open was a victim of the weather for a second time and now will be replayed on Thursday 20th September.
