Club News – 14th August 2012

Martin Rouse (11) was the man on form in Saturdays big event the Fir Trees Open Stableford winning with an excellent 41 pts, a modest opening of 17 pts for the first nine would not have suggested a successful day for the player but a scintillating inward nine returning in level par set up an excellent 24 pts including a winning birdie at the final hole, getting home with one shot to spare on a total of 41pts from Paul O’Neill (18) whose 40 pts looked like a very challenging total on a warm but blustery day that had kept scores in general pretty high. Third place went to Brian Kelly (21) with 39 pts the same total as Conor Sharkey (7) and Kieran Doherty (5) in fifth with the same totals, Fred McGavigan (6) took a welcome gross prize with 34 gross pts with the nines going to Michael Kennedy (21) with 21 pts for the outward nine and to Gerard Walsh who came home with 22 pts for the inward nine.

Foothills Restaurant Open
Thursday’s Competition was kindly sponsored by the Foothill’s Restaurant Gortin and saw an excellent midweek entry on perfect day weather wise for golfers. The winner was Mark Sharkey (21) who romped home in some style in the first fourball of the morning, with a brilliant 44 pts a total that was never likely to be headed for the remainder of the day.  Darrell Meadows (15) has been in the winners enclosure in recent weeks and he kept up his good run taking the runners up spot with 41 pts just ahead of third placed Ryan McColgan (15) on break of tie the gross went to Enda Kennedy with another excellent round of 66, three under par.

Monday Open
This weeks Monday Open went to yet another one of our promising young junior players Kieran Neeson (13) who has improved beyond recognition in recent months and his total of 44 pts despite having two blank holes was the clear winner on the day, his two birdies and an eagle (at the 17th!!!) in the last four holes giving him a dream finish, the runner up a full 5 shots back was Aidan Corry (10) another player who has impressed this season Declan O’Hare (10) took third also with 39 pts returning him to single figures in the process, the gross went to another promising junior golfer Kevin Gallagher (6) with 32 gross pts.

Match play events
The clubs premier match play events played over the summer months have all mostly reached the semi-final stages with some very interesting ties to come.

In the Lawson Cup 18-28 handicap range Gerard Stewart will meet Jim Potts in one semi-final with Tommy Sharkey taking on George McCay in the other encounter.

In the mixed foursomes Worcester Cup Lorna Duffy and Declan Lynch await their next opponents in the final, all of these over due matches should be played as soon as possible to avoid disqualification from the events.
