Golf Notes – 24th July 2012

CHARLIE WINS PRESIDENTS PRIZE

There was a tremendous entry and brilliant weather conditions for Saturday’s competition Mr Paddy O’Kane’s Presidents Prize with 178 members taking out cards plus numerous guests.
Charlie Patton (13) has always proved himself a player for the big day, and he did so once again on this occasion, returning a brilliant total of 44 pts which was three clear of his nearest challenger.  An excellent start saw him level par through the first five holes although 5 bogeys in the next six holes gave him work to do, but an excellent level par for the last six inward holes saw Charlie post his winning total that was never likely to be challenged.

Getting closest was one of this years most consistent performers Oliver Creswell (10) who played very steady golf on the way to posting an impressive 41 pts, 20 pts to the turn set Oliver up with a chance and a good two over par second nine gave him his final total, third place went to Garvin Godfrey (10) with an excellent 40 pts the same total as fourth placed Frankie Houston (15) with Eamon McCay (18) the top lefthander on the day finishing with 39 pts. The gross prize went to Enda Kennedy (+1) with a one over par 35 gross pts with the nines going to Chris Timoney (23) with 20 pts for the first nine and to Johnny Potts (22) who accumulated 22 pts for the back nine, the winner of the Presidents guest prize was Frankie Connolly with 38 pts with Connor McCool (17) taking the juniors prize.

KELLYS BAKERY OPEN
There was also a good turnout for last Thursdays open the Kelly’s Bakery Stableford event with over 100 players on the day. The winner was Adrian McLaughlin (12) with 40 pts just ahead of runner up Foncie McNally (14) with 39 pt with Nicky Wolfe (9) third with 37 pts, the visitors prize went to Pat Sweeney also with 37 pts, the gross prize went to Patrick Kennedy (1) with 34 gross pts.

Monday Open
There was a much smaller entry than usual for Mondays Open Stableford event with the mornings play being a virtual wash out, the winner was Paddy Doyle (12) with 40 pts just ahead of runner up John Maxwell (12) on break of tie, third went to Ronan Foley with 39 pts with Martin McDermott taking the gross on this occasion with 34 gross pts.

Ladies golf
Last weeks Ladies day event was the Eileen Logue Memorial Cup which was won by Mandy Coyne (9) with a Nett 70, Category one went to Bernie O’Kane with Nett 71 with Abbey Maxwell (33) taking category two with Nett 72.

The Ladies Tyrone and Fermanagh Betterball team have a 14.5 – 5.5 first leg lead over near neighbours Newtownstewart after their home leg last Sunday, this could prove to be a very close affair with the second leg to come next week at the Baronscourt venue.

Many congratulations to premier Lady golfer Helen Jones who recently lifted the Lady’s Seniors Irish Matchplay championship, Helen also represented Strabane in the first match of this tie gaining 3.5 pts with partner Norma Brogan.

Wednesday Night Mixed
There were 18 pairs in total for last Wednesdays Mixed Greensomes with Kathleen Hoynes and Foncie McNally teaming up to take first place with 36 pts over the 15 holes in play, the runners up were Annette Patton and Denis Porter with 35 pts.

Well done to our Donegal Senior League team under the captaincy of Damian McGranaghan, who have advanced to this years final after defeating Ballybofey in the home leg last Friday night with an emphatic 7-0 home win making the final result 10 matches to four overall.
