Club Notes – 10th July 2012

The clubs annual open week is underway at Strabane with a full schedule of varied Open events. The Frylite Open Teams got matters underway with an excellent turnout of 36 teams, the winning score was posted by the very last team out with a two point cushion on 96 pts, the winners were Seamus Friel, Tommy Sharkey, Mark Donaghy and junior member Eoin O’Neill who was on blistering form on the day playing some tremendous golf.

The long time leaders who eventually finished runners up were the experienced quartet of Pat Patton, John Duffy, Hugo mcCusker and Eugene Patton who were the best of a host of teams on 94 pts, in third spot were the Frylite staff members team consisting of Eddie mc Crea, Gerard Mullen, Kieran Duffy and Stephen Alexander, the leading ladies team on the day were Catherine Neeson, Heather Mitchell, Mary Casey and Geraldine McCrory with a solid return of 88pts.

Mondays Open event was kindly sponsored by local company GMG Logos, with the field unfortunately much reduced due to the continuing wet weather, the winner was Stephen McCay (5) with an excellent 39pts in the worst of the morning conditions, Club Vice-Captain, Ciaran Kelly was the runner up also on the same total of 39 pts with George McCay (20) one point further back on 38 pts, the gross went to Patrick Kennedy with 35 gross pts, the presentation for this event is this Friday night 13th July at 9.30 pm

Saturdays Open which just preceded Open week was the Strabane Electrics Open Stableford with over 150 players taking out cards on the day, Tommy Sharkey (19) was again providing the Late Late Show bringing in the winning total of 40 pts again in the very last fourball of the day, Michael O’Neill (20) was the long time leader but had to be content with the runners up berth on this occasion he will regret a sloppy double bogey, double bogey finish, but will take consolation that this result has moved him back to the summit of this years golfer of the year standings, third on the day was scratch golfer Enda Kennedy who posted a brilliant two under par total despite being three over after the first three holes, six birdies in his remaining holes bring him very much back into contention, Pat Patton (13) took fourth also with 38 pts with Maurice Doherty taking the final nett prize also with 38 pts, Conal Cooke’s (3) total of three over was good enough to secure the gross prize with the nines going to Jim Callaghan and Neil Alcock respectively.

John Fahy Open
The first ever John Fahy and Co. Open Stableford was played on Thursday last and on an unusually good day weather wise there was an excellent entry with almost 100 players on the day, the winner was Aidan Boyle (5) with a fine one over par total of 40 pts with the ever improving Aiden O’Neill the runner up also with 40 pts, Jordan Arthur (6) has been in great recent form and he took third place with 39 pts the gross went to Enda Kennedy (scr) with 37 gross pts, the visitors prize went to Pat O’Gorman (13) playing out of Narin and Portnoo golf club.

Mixed Foursomes
There was a smaller than normal turnout for last Wednesday night Mixed Foursomes with 8 pairs competing, the winners were Caroline and Frankie Connolly with 27 pts the same total as runners up Olive and Eric Reid.

Ladies Golf
The ladies event last week was the Lady Herdman Cup with the honours going to Rachel Devenney (26) with Nett 71, the category prizes went to Olive Turner with Nett 71 also and to Imelda Doherty who returned Nett 72 on the day.

The Ladies I.L.G.U Intermediate Cup team went out of that competition on Saturday evening going down by the narrowest of margins before losing out on holes count back despite an excellent 4-1 home victory on the day, the damage being done in last weeks away leg where they suffered a 4-1 reverse which was very unlucky as they lost two of the ties in extra holes.

The Ladies Captains prize to the Junior girls members was played recently and saw Abby Maxwell take category 1, Rachel Ellis take Category 2 and Sarah Bradley take category 3.

The latest Junior boys event was won in some style by the ever improving Connor McCool (20) with a blistering 47 pts, Eoin o’Neill won category 1 with 40pts and Michael Doherty took category 2 with a great return of 45pts.
