Club Notes – 31st July 2012

There was a seasons best entry for the Foyle Hospice Team Classic on Sunday last at Strabane with 48 teams taking out cards which was a wonderful entry despite the continuing inclement weather conditions that prevailed.  The winning quartet were Pat Patton, Hugo McCusker, John Duffy and Eugene Patton who finished strongly to amass the winning total of 106 pts to add to this teams recent run of success in team classics, the runners up only beaten on break of tie were Kevin McGinley, Shane McLaughlin, Martin Patton and Brian Cairns, with Tommy Sharkey, Seamus Friel, Mark Donaghey and Foncie McNally, in third back on 103 pts. Mark Corry, Francis McGranaghan, Martin Corry and Kevin Connolly took fourth position with 102 pts, the leading all ladies team on the day were the foursome of Helen McGaughey, Heather Mitchell, Mary Casey and Geraldine McCrory who returned a very creditable total of 100 pts.  Please note the presentation for this event and the raffle will take place on Saturday 11th August at 10.00pm.

The July Monthly Medal sponsored by Donegal Sports from Letterkenny was Saturday’s big competition and attracted a sizeable entry with 150 players going to post, the winner was a relative newcomer to the game John Gallagher (23) who has been showing great potential off late, and his early morning return of nett 66 was equalled but not beaten for the remainder of the day.  John eventually won on break of tie from the runner up Jim Potts (20) with John Langan (13) in third place also with the same total fourth place went to Gerard Stewart (21) with Nett 67 and Ronan Foley (8) back in fifth spot with nett 68, the gross prize went to Enda Kennedy (+1) with a one under par round of gross 68, the nines went to John Hegarty (20) with nett 30 for the first nine and to Damien McCrossan (19) who had nett 30.5 for the second nine, the presentation for this event is on Friday night 3rd August at 9.00pm.

The Mitchell Meats Open was played on Thursday last and had also a very decent mid-week entry, John Maxwell (11) has been very much a man in form lately and he posted a winning total of 42 pts thanks mainly to a blistering level par back nine, his strong second nine showing being good enough to see off the challenge of the runner up Patrick McCrossan (10) on count-back, third place went to visiting player N. Golf Notes – 24th July 2012

There was a tremendous entry and brilliant weather conditions for Saturday’s competition Mr Paddy O’Kane’s Presidents Prize with 178 members taking out cards plus numerous guests.
Charlie Patton (13) has always proved himself a player for the big day, and he did so once again on this occasion, returning a brilliant total of 44 pts which was three clear of his nearest challenger.  An excellent start saw him level par through the first five holes although 5 bogeys in the next six holes gave him work to do, but an excellent level par for the last six inward holes saw Charlie post his winning total that was never likely to be challenged.

Getting closest was one of this years most consistent performers Oliver Creswell (10) who played very steady golf on the way to posting an impressive 41 pts, 20 pts to the turn set Oliver up with a chance and a good two over par second nine gave him his final total, third place went to Garvin Godfrey (10) with an excellent 40 pts the same total as fourth placed Frankie Houston (15) with Eamon McCay (18) the top lefthander on the day finishing with 39 pts. The gross prize went to Enda Kennedy (+1) with a one over par 35 gross pts with the nines going to Chris Timoney (23) with 20 pts for the first nine and to Johnny Potts (22) who accumulated 22 pts for the back nine, the winner of the Presidents guest prize was Frankie Connolly with 38 pts with Connor McCool (17) taking the juniors prize.

There was also a good turnout for last Thursdays open the Kelly’s Bakery Stableford event with over 100 players on the day. The winner was Adrian McLaughlin (12) with 40 pts just ahead of runner up Foncie McNally (14) with 39 pt with Nicky Wolfe (9) third with 37 pts, the visitors prize went to Pat Sweeney also with 37 pts, the gross prize went to Patrick Kennedy (1) with 34 gross pts.

Monday Open
There was a much smaller entry than usual for Mondays Open Stableford event with the mornings play being a virtual wash out, the winner was Paddy Doyle (12) with 40 pts just ahead of runner up John Maxwell (12) on break of tie, third went to Ronan Foley with 39 pts with Martin McDermott taking the gross on this occasion with 34 gross pts.

Ladies golf
Last weeks Ladies day event was the Eileen Logue Memorial Cup which was won by Mandy Coyne (9) with a Nett 70, Category one went to Bernie O’Kane with Nett 71 with Abbey Maxwell (33) taking category two with Nett 72.

The Ladies Tyrone and Fermanagh Betterball team have a 14.5 – 5.5 first leg lead over near neighbours Newtownstewart after their home leg last Sunday, this could prove to be a very close affair with the second leg to come next week at the Baronscourt venue.

Many congratulations to premier Lady golfer Helen Jones who recently lifted the Lady’s Seniors Irish Matchplay championship, Helen also represented Strabane in the first match of this tie gaining 3.5 pts with partner Norma Brogan.

Wednesday Night Mixed
There were 18 pairs in total for last Wednesdays Mixed Greensomes with Kathleen Hoynes and Foncie McNally teaming up to take first place with 36 pts over the 15 holes in play, the runners up were Annette Patton and Denis Porter with 35 pts.

Inter club events
Well done to our Donegal Senior League team under the captaincy of Damian McGranaghan, who have advanced to this years final after defeating Ballybofey in the home leg last Friday night with an emphatic 7-0 home win making the final result 10 matches to four overall.

Less good news however of our Roberts cup who have lost the trophy won this past three years going down to Dungannon, the match finished level at twelve points each but Strabane lost out on count back of holes.

Inter Club News
Our Ulster Cup team unfortunately made their exit from this years competition at the last 16 stages, going down to Clover Hill G.C

Our Roberts Cup team have also got it all to do after a narrow 7.5 pts to 4.5 pts home leg win over Dungannon and the away leg will be very interesting.

Bad lines also to our Conway Cup team who also made their exit going down in the play-off match with Eniskillen by 8.5 pts to 7.5 pts after the two legs had finished completely even.

Club Notes – 10th July 2012

The clubs annual open week is underway at Strabane with a full schedule of varied Open events. The Frylite Open Teams got matters underway with an excellent turnout of 36 teams, the winning score was posted by the very last team out with a two point cushion on 96 pts, the winners were Seamus Friel, Tommy Sharkey, Mark Donaghy and junior member Eoin O’Neill who was on blistering form on the day playing some tremendous golf.

The long time leaders who eventually finished runners up were the experienced quartet of Pat Patton, John Duffy, Hugo mcCusker and Eugene Patton who were the best of a host of teams on 94 pts, in third spot were the Frylite staff members team consisting of Eddie mc Crea, Gerard Mullen, Kieran Duffy and Stephen Alexander, the leading ladies team on the day were Catherine Neeson, Heather Mitchell, Mary Casey and Geraldine McCrory with a solid return of 88pts.

Mondays Open event was kindly sponsored by local company GMG Logos, with the field unfortunately much reduced due to the continuing wet weather, the winner was Stephen McCay (5) with an excellent 39pts in the worst of the morning conditions, Club Vice-Captain, Ciaran Kelly was the runner up also on the same total of 39 pts with George McCay (20) one point further back on 38 pts, the gross went to Patrick Kennedy with 35 gross pts, the presentation for this event is this Friday night 13th July at 9.30 pm

Saturdays Open which just preceded Open week was the Strabane Electrics Open Stableford with over 150 players taking out cards on the day, Tommy Sharkey (19) was again providing the Late Late Show bringing in the winning total of 40 pts again in the very last fourball of the day, Michael O’Neill (20) was the long time leader but had to be content with the runners up berth on this occasion he will regret a sloppy double bogey, double bogey finish, but will take consolation that this result has moved him back to the summit of this years golfer of the year standings, third on the day was scratch golfer Enda Kennedy who posted a brilliant two under par total despite being three over after the first three holes, six birdies in his remaining holes bring him very much back into contention, Pat Patton (13) took fourth also with 38 pts with Maurice Doherty taking the final nett prize also with 38 pts, Conal Cooke’s (3) total of three over was good enough to secure the gross prize with the nines going to Jim Callaghan and Neil Alcock respectively.

John Fahy Open
The first ever John Fahy and Co. Open Stableford was played on Thursday last and on an unusually good day weather wise there was an excellent entry with almost 100 players on the day, the winner was Aidan Boyle (5) with a fine one over par total of 40 pts with the ever improving Aiden O’Neill the runner up also with 40 pts, Jordan Arthur (6) has been in great recent form and he took third place with 39 pts the gross went to Enda Kennedy (scr) with 37 gross pts, the visitors prize went to Pat O’Gorman (13) playing out of Narin and Portnoo golf club.

Mixed Foursomes
There was a smaller than normal turnout for last Wednesday night Mixed Foursomes with 8 pairs competing, the winners were Caroline and Frankie Connolly with 27 pts the same total as runners up Olive and Eric Reid.

Ladies Golf
The ladies event last week was the Lady Herdman Cup with the honours going to Rachel Devenney (26) with Nett 71, the category prizes went to Olive Turner with Nett 71 also and to Imelda Doherty who returned Nett 72 on the day.

The Ladies I.L.G.U Intermediate Cup team went out of that competition on Saturday evening going down by the narrowest of margins before losing out on holes count back despite an excellent 4-1 home victory on the day, the damage being done in last weeks away leg where they suffered a 4-1 reverse which was very unlucky as they lost two of the ties in extra holes.

The Ladies Captains prize to the Junior girls members was played recently and saw Abby Maxwell take category 1, Rachel Ellis take Category 2 and Sarah Bradley take category 3.

The latest Junior boys event was won in some style by the ever improving Connor McCool (20) with a blistering 47 pts, Eoin o’Neill won category 1 with 40pts and Michael Doherty took category 2 with a great return of 45pts.

Inter club news
The first leg of the Donegal Senior League Semi-Final was played on Friday night at close neighbours Ballybofey with Damian mcGranaghan’s charges picking up an excellent three matches going down in the tie by 4 matches to three but will have high hopes of making it to this years final.

Club Notes – 3rd July 2012

Paul Gallagher playing off nine, was the winner of Saturday’s event the Farmer’s Home Open stableford which, like so many competitions lately, was greatly affected by the continuing wet spell of weather, leading to a much reduced Saturday entry with just over 100 players braving the elements.  Paul’s excellent return of 40 pts was good enough by a single point from early morning starter Paul Bogle (13) who in turn had two shots to spare from third placed Paul McGill (7) who always seems to play very well in adverse conditions. The gross prize went to Patrick Kennedy (2) with a four over par round of 32 points with Keith Patterson (5) taking fourth with 35 pts the same total as fifth placed Stephen McCay (6), the nines went to visiting player Andy Doherty (26) with 19 pts for the first nine and to Ben Corry (4) also with 19 pts for the second nine, Kevin O’Donnell from North West Golf Club took the visitors prize.  All the winners should note that this presentation takes place this Friday evening at 8.30pm.

Christy’s Bar Open
Christy’s Bar Open Stableford was played on the previous Thursday with the field again being reduced by the awful weather conditions, the winner with a great score on the day of 42 pts was Fred Daly team member, and very promising golfer, Eoin O’Neill (11) who was a full three shots clear of the runner up Brian Kelly (21) with 39 pts with Patrick Kennedy (2) shooting an excellent level par round of 38 pts, the gross on this occasion went to Keith Patterson (5) with 33 gross pts, the presentation is also on Friday at 8.30 pm.

Monday Open
Thankfully weather conditions had greatly improved for Mondays Open event which attracted an excellent entry, Foncie McNally (15) ran out the winner with 41 pts a point clear of Kevin McGinley (10) with 40 pts with the in form Kevin O’ Gorman third with 39 pts, Enda Kennedy now back playing of a tremendous +1 handicap took the gross on this occasion with a level par round.

Ladies Golf
The ladies event last Tuesday went to Margaret Bonner (28) with 69 Nett, which was the clear winner from the category winners Anne Sharkey (19) with Nett 72 and Abbey Maxwell (33) with nett 74.

Last week mixed event was played as a scramble format and was won by Mary Duffy, Lady President Teresa Casey, Senan Roarty and Francie Devine with a good total of 46.6 with the husband and wife quartet of Geraldine and John Masterson and Patricia and Ciaran Kelly the runners up with 47.2.
