BERNIE O’KANE WINS LADY CAPTAINS PRIZE

Following on from the previous Saturday’s Captains day it was the Lady members day to honour the Lady Captain Noreen McNally on Saturday past with an excellent turnout for their Lady Captain’s day which thankfully was played in much improved weather conditions, the rain staying away for most of the day.  The winner as it turned out was in the early morning first three-ball Bernie O’Kane (18) posting a challenging total of nett 69, which was not bettered for the remainder of the day, this was Bernie’s second Lady Captains prize in recent years having captured the Centenary years award in 2009.  The runner up on the day was the very consistent, Jennifer Rouse(19) who finished just one shot back with nett 70, with Shauna Stewart(13) third a further stroke behind with nett 71, Mandy Coyne (9) took the gross prize with 81 gross with Margaret Bonner(28) taking fifth place with Nett 73, the category winners were Lauren Patton, Heather Mitchell and Mary McGuigan with the nines prizes going to Caroline Connolly and Olive Turner, the Leading men’s guest player was Club Captain Sean MacIntyre with 37 pts, with Eric Reid taking the men’s 13 holes evening competition from Joe Elliot in second place.
Other Lady Captains day winners were Imelda Doherty-Grannies Prize, Mary Gallagher-Senior Ladies,  Mary Casey Ladies Committee prize,  Loretta Coyne Senior ladies prize, Carmel McElwee Ladies Novice winner, Longest drive Caroline Connolly, Nearest the pin Bernie O’Kane and Lady Novice putting competition Orla Quinn.

Hugh Harley Cup
Last Thursdays Hugh Harley Cup saw a much smaller entry than usual due to the continuing inclement weather, it was however, won in fine style by Kevin O’Gorman(15) with an excellent 41 pts with Paul McNally (13) the runner up with 40 pts Enda Kennedy continued his superb form with a three under par round that transferred to 39 pts, Martin McDermott (4) took the gross on this occasion with 35 gross pts.

St Patrick’s Gortin Team Classic
Twenty six teams took part in Sundays St Patrick’s GAA Gortin Team Classic which was played as a yellow ball event, with the team members taking it in turn to play the yellow ball with this score always having to count, the unusual but entertaining format certainly suited the winners Martin Keys, Paul O’Neill, Jimmy Henderson and Brendan O’Neill who were the clear six point winners from runners up Declan Lynch, Martin Rouse, Charlie Patton and Chris McDermott with Sammy & Rachel Devenney and Eric & Olive Reid in third place a further point back with 87 pts, the longest Drive prize went to Ryan McGowan.

Monday Open
Mondays Open
stableford event went to Mark Quinn (16) with a massive 44 pts which was only one clear of last year’s junior Captain Jordan Arthur (7) who was level par for his round which converted to 43 pts Robert Bell (13) took third place with 41 pts with Enda Kennedy (scr) taking yet another gross prize.

Mixed Foursomes
There was an excellent turnout for last Wednesday nights Mixed Greensomes team event which went to the quartet of Sammy & Rachel Devenney and Eric & Olive Reid with 46 pts, one point clear of the runners up Ryan McGowan and Lorna Duffy who partnered Frankie and Caroline Connolly.

Inter Club News
There were a few positive results in this weeks inter club fixtures with pride of place going to Joe Doherty’s Ulster Cup squad who came through their second round tie with Magee Island with an excellent win, they held an excellent 6-1 advantage from Friday nights home leg and finished the job off comfortably on Sunday by five matches to two at the Co. Down venue. Well done also to our Donegal League Senior Team who completed a good victory over North-West Golf club on the previous Friday. Our O’Hare Cup team Captained by Garvin Godfrey made their first appearance of the season beating Enniskillen emphatically by 15.5 pts- 0.5 pts.

Our Phair Cup team, however, went out of that event going down to near neighbours Newtownstewart with the main damage being done with a disappointing home performance.

There is music in the club this Saturday night with Sharon Nixon providing the entertainment from 10.30pm all welcome there is no cover charge.

Club Notes – 19th June 2012

SUCCESSFUL CAPTAINS DAY AT STRABANE.

Saturday last proved to be very successful day for Club Captain Sean MacIntyre with well in excess of 200 players competing despite the very poor weather, almost constant rainfall and a stiff northerly breeze making conditions pretty unpleasant for most of the day, despite this however only one name was on everyone’s lips when the results were disclosed, 21 year old Mark Corry, playing of 17 he totally decimated the huge field with a remarkable return of 58 nett which was only 6 over for his round.  Mark a first year member at Strabane having recently played at Newtownstewart Golf Club, has been having by his own admission a pretty mediocre golf season to date not taking advantage of his huge distance off the tee, but he put all that behind him in some style on Saturday completing both nines in three over par to win on the day with a record nine shot margin despite finishing with two bogeys. The runner up on the day was John Langan (14) playing in one of the very late fourballs John returned a very creditable Nett 67 with a very strong back nine despite an untidy double bogey at the par three 16th hole he rallied well to finish with two pars to relegate Mark McColgan (6) to third place, a bogey at the last hole costing Mark dearly but he will be highly satisfied with his two birdie two’s at the 7th and 12th holes, which helped greatly with his final total of only four over par nett 67. Ben Corry(5) also had a day to remember not only winning the Gross prize but also recording a fabulous hole in one at the 16th hole with the perfect 5 wood shot straight into the wind and into the cup. Fourth place on the day went to Pat McGuigan (21) also one of the early morning starters ,Pat has shown great consistency all season and his podium finish also with nett 67 was no real surprise, the final nett prize went to Gerard (Skipper) Mullan (25) also with nett 67.
The nines on Captains day went to Conal Cooke (3) with 32.5 for the first nine and to Stephen Alexander (22) with nett 33 for the second nine, the highest placed Captains guest was Noel McConnell (9) with 71 nett,  Brian Cairns took the longest drive at the 18th prize with Liam Curry winning nearest the pin at the same hole, the Student prize was won for the second consecutive year by Eoin O’Neill with 36 pts.

Following the fantastic Captains meal for his guests the Captain delivered a rousing and at times emotional speech thanking everyone who had helped him in any way throughout his very successful year, especially his wife and famil,y and thanking all the members for their marvellous support throughout his tenure to date.

Captains Mixed Greensomes
There was an excellent turnout for the Captains Mixed event on Wednesday night with 33 pairs taking part, this was the first time in recent years that this competition had reverted back to a mid-week slot and it proved a very enjoyable evening. The winners on the night were Geraldine McCrory and Liam Curry with 37pts over the 15 holes in play the same total as runners up Mary Gallagher and Oliver McNally with Catherine Neeson and Denis Porter taking third place also on break of tie with the same total of 37 pts.
The gross prize went to Jennifer Rouse and Ben Corry with 21 gross pts.

Captains Betterball
There were 44 pairs entered on Thursday for the Captains Betterball which went to Denis Porter and Seamus McPhilemy with 44 pts a shot ahead of the runners up Kieran Martin and Chris Timoney with 43 pts with Paul McLaughlin and Michael O’Neill taking third with 42 pts.

Captains prize to the Ladies
The Ladies section had their opportunity to play for the Captains prize on Tuesday with Jennifer Rouse taking first place with 69 nett, the categories went to Heather Mitchell and To Abbie Maxwell.

Well done also to the Ladies Tyrone and Fermanagh Betterball team who progressed to the next round with a good win over Omagh Ladies on Sunday evening past. In the Novice section the winner of the Captains prize to the Ladies was Orla Friel with Pauline McBride the runner- up.

Other recent Novice results were Week 1 – Karen Carlin, Week 2 – Pauline McBride, Week 3 – Geniveve O’Neill, Week 4 – Maura Shannon, Week 5 – Carmel McElwee and Week 6 – Maura Shannon.

The winner of the recent Junior Girls Competition was Shannon Rice with Sarah Bradley in second place.

There was much interest in Fridays Junior and Adult foursomes event which was kindly sponsored by Sean Sweeney, the winners were the Father and Daughter combination of John and Abbie Maxwell, with Paul and Zara McLaughlin the runners up and Oliver McNally and his grand daughter Emer McNally in third place.

Monday open
There was a much-reduced field for Mondays open Competition due to the rain and thunderstorms in the early evening, nonetheless Conal Cooke (3) had a brilliant gross 66 three under par round which contained no less than five birdies, this converted to 42 pts to win by 4 clear shots from runner up Ryan McGowan (5) with 38 pts with Ryan McColgan taking third with 36 pts Frankie Gallagher (7) took the gross prize.

Inter Club Golf
Our Junior Cup team bowed out of the competition at the first match-play stage going down to Portstewart G.C at Roe Park by three matches to two.

Our Phair Cup team, under the captaincy of Kevin McGinley, have it all to do in the second leg of their match with near neighbours Newtownstewart G.C. going down to a disappointing 9-7 defeat at home on Sunday last.

And commiserations also to the Holy Cross under –16 golf team who went down to St Malachy’s of Belfast in last Fridays final at Moyola Park.

Finally good luck this Saturday to our Lady Captain Noreen McNally, for her Captains day hopefully there will be an improvement in the weather for her and all the competitors.

Club News 12th June 2012

CORRY A CLEAR WINNER.

Dermott Corry (18) a relative newcomer to the game totally decimated the large field in Saturdays big event The Devine Sand and Gravel Open stableford, winning by a most decisive six shot margin posting a marvellous 46pts.  Dermott had recently claimed the “Best left-hander trophy” and he showed great new found confidence in his outward nine, with a massive 25 pts to the turn, a rock steady further 21 pts on the inward nine saw him claim the top prize in some style and losing a welcome 3 shots from his handicap.  The runner up was Dr John Etherson(16) who has being playing steady golf off late and his 40 pts was an excellent total too, third went to Paul McGill (7) with 39 pts with Martin mcGrellis (14) again in the prizes for fourth, with the final nett prize going to Chris McDermott (12) with 38 pts.  Keith Patterson claimed the Gross prize with a three over par round, with the nines going to George McCay(20) with 22 pts for the front nine and to William Potts (22) who recorded 23 pts for the back nine.

Holy Cross Schools Cup
Good luck to Holy Cross under 16 golfers who look to take yet another cup back to their school when they play St Malachy’s of Belfast in the final of the Darren Clarke Schools Cup at Moyola Golf club this Friday, the entire team are junior members in the club and the side is captained by our own Lisa Patton our best wishes are extended to the entire team.

Inter Club Golf
Another disappointing week in the Inter club golf circle again this week with Senan Roarty’s Jimmy Bruen team going down by three matches to two in a match that they looked for long periods as they would win.
There was no joy for our GUI Mixed squad at killymoon on Sunday past, missing out on qualification by 3 shots.   Our Donegal Senior League team went down by four matched to three in their away leg with North West but will have high hopes for the return leg this Friday night at Strabane.
