MICHAEL O’NEILL TAKES SEASON OPENER
The new golfing season got into full swing on Saturday past with the traditional season opener The John Kelly Stableford,

In all almost 180 cards were taken out for the event which was played in warm but very blustery conditions making good scoring difficult which in a way was welcome compared to the recent run of eye catching scores being returned in winter conditions.

Michael O’Neill has had a lean time on the golf course in recent times seeing his handicap continually rising to 22 but he put this all behind him on Saturday to take the event in some style despite a double bogey six at the final hole finishing with a very creditable 42 pts which was good enough on the day by two shots from Mark Quinn (16) who in turn was a shot ahead of third placed Donal Cairns (24) with 39 pts, Junior Member Kevin Gallagher (8) continues to show much promise taking fourth place with 37 pts just pipping Ronnie Wiley (12) who had the same return and took 5th spot. The gross went to Darren Crawford with a very steady four over par round.

The nines went to Maurice Harkin (23) with 21 for the outward nine and to Don Callan (21) with 22 for the inward nine.

The popular Thursday club weekly event has reached week nine in the second phase, last weeks event was played over 16 holes on the full course, not for the first time this year Michael Baldrick (16) headed the leader board with a remarkable return of 43 pts which converted to 40.5 nett and left him ahead of the in form Foncie McNally (14) who’s return of 42 pts was reduced also to 40.5 nett, third went to the steady Chris McDermott with 38 nett. This week’s competition is qualifying over 18 holes and is open to all members to play in. In the golfer of the year stakes Denis Porter narrowly leads the way on 112 pts with Michael Baldrick currently second on 111 pts with Ollie Mc Nally third on 81 pts.
