MICHAEL O’NEILL TAKES SEASON OPENER
The new golfing season got into full swing on Saturday past with the traditional season opener The John Kelly Stableford,

In all almost 180 cards were taken out for the event which was played in warm but very blustery conditions making good scoring difficult which in a way was welcome compared to the recent run of eye catching scores being returned in winter conditions.

Michael O’Neill has had a lean time on the golf course in recent times seeing his handicap continually rising to 22 but he put this all behind him on Saturday to take the event in some style despite a double bogey six at the final hole finishing with a very creditable 42 pts which was good enough on the day by two shots from Mark Quinn (16) who in turn was a shot ahead of third placed Donal Cairns (24) with 39 pts, Junior Member Kevin Gallagher (8) continues to show much promise taking fourth place with 37 pts just pipping Ronnie Wiley (12) who had the same return and took 5th spot. The gross went to Darren Crawford with a very steady four over par round.

The nines went to Maurice Harkin (23) with 21 for the outward nine and to Don Callan (21) with 22 for the inward nine.

Thursday Club
The popular Thursday club weekly event has reached week nine in the second phase, last weeks event was played over 16 holes on the full course, not for the first time this year Michael Baldrick (16) headed the leader board with a remarkable return of 43 pts which converted to 40.5 nett and left him ahead of the in form Foncie McNally (14) who’s return of 42 pts was reduced also to 40.5 nett, third went to the steady Chris McDermott with 38 nett. This week’s competition is qualifying over 18 holes and is open to all members to play in. In the golfer of the year stakes Denis Porter narrowly leads the way on 112 pts with Michael Baldrick currently second on 111 pts with Ollie Mc Nally third on 81 pts.

Monday Club
The Popular Monday club saw 8 teams enter this week and was won by the three-man team of Patsy Rouse, Dermott Cairns and Patrick Kennedy with a fine total of 102 pts, with Jimmy Callan Danny McGinley, Jimmy Coyle and Frank Friel the runners up with 98 pts. The final day of the Monday Club is on Monday 16th April when the golf team event will be followed by a buffet and an evening of entertainment in honour of the long time Monday club John Joe Christy who recently passed away, all family, members and friends are invited to the evening.

NEW GOLFING SEASON DRAWS CLOSER.

Hopes are high in local golfing circles that an improvement in the weather will see the new golfing season getting underway as scheduled with the season’s opener “The John Kelly Stableford” on Saturday 24th March. The timesheet for this event will be available in the club from 7.30pm this Friday 16th March along with the timesheets for Sat 31st March and for the Joe McGarrigle Staying Alive Tund Team Classic on Sunday 1st April.

Plenty of golf has been possible in recent weeks as the off-season draws to a close, the main event saw the conclusion of The Super-Valu Springers league which went to the” 2 PR’S” in convincing fashion at the end leading from the front they eventually ran out the winners by a comfortable margin of 12 points, the team were William and Johnny Potts who accompanied Eric and Barry Reid, this was a further milestone for the Reid’s as they had earlier in the Winter teamed up to lift the Sperrin Springs Winter Cup, a very noteworthy double indeed.  The runners up in the event were the consistent squad of Michael Baldrick, Freddie Patterson, John Brolly and John Maxwell, with The Snooker Loops, namely Paul McLaughlin, Chris Timoney, Neil Alcock and Mickey O’Neill taking third place overall.  Please take note the Presentation for this competition will now take place on Friday 13th April at 8.30pm, there is a presentation buffet available to participants at 7.30 on the evening.

Monday Club
It was with great regret and sadness that that we learned of the recent death of the founder and long time co-ordinator of the Popular Monday club John Joe Christy, John a former President of Strabane Golf club will be sadly missed by all that knew him, our heartfelt sympathies are extended to his Family.  A day in memory of John Joe has been arranged for Monday 16th April with golf followed by a buffet and a cabaret evening with many of the clubs favourite singers keen to pay their respects to a brilliant life long clubman.

Saturday Stableford
There was an excellent turnout for the last Saturdays 15 holes Stableford event with the winning score being posted by Oliver McNally (15) with 39 pts 2nd Kieran Martin (12) 38 pts and 3rd Liam Patton (17) with 38 pts also, the gross went to Conor Sharkey with 28 gross.
