Club Notes – 6th February 2011

The unseasonably mild but very wet spell of weather has continued to disrupt the local golfing programme at Strabane and in fact it is true testament to the marvellous work on the drainage on the course in recent years that any play has been possible at all.

The delayed Sperrin Springs Winter cup has finally concluded.
With both semi-finals firstly being up for decision, in a very close encounter Oliver Creswell and Aidan Corry just got the better of Ronnie Wiley and Mark Sharkey at the 18th hole while the Father and Son combination of Eric and Barry Reid used their shots well to defeat Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty at the 16th hole, leaving the two victors to slog it out for this years title, the match proved to be a very tense affair with Eric and Barry again using their shots well at important times and despite a strong rally from their opponents the Reid duo wrapped the match up at the final hole with a testing six footer from Barry Reid who held his nerve well many congratulations to the winners who proudly lifted the Leo Kavanagh Memorial Cup.

Thursday Club
The clubs popular Thursday club competition had also fallen victim to the inclement weather at the back end of the phase one stage with five weeks being lost in total, however the weather stayed reasonable for the final day proceedings with 60 players competing for the great prizes up for grabs with first and second place winning a pass for all days of the up coming Irish Open at Portrush.

The winner on the day was Adrian McGonagle who’s golf has improved to no end over the Winter months his total of 36 pts on the day was good enough to win by one Shot from John Brolly who’s blank at the final hole cost him his chance and leaving him a shot back on 35 pts, third went to Ronnie Wiley with 34 pts the same total as Jim Wasson and Hugo McCusker who finished 4th and 5th respectively.

Denis Porter duly wrapped up the Golfer of the Year title with 134 pts, with a tie for second place between Pascal McGillian and Hugh Casey with 124 pts.
