COUNTDOWN TO NEW GOLF SEASON

With the 2012 golfing season less than a month away the countdown to the season is in full swing, the final touches and jigging of fixture schedules is currently being done with the new Golfing programme booklet hopefully available to members from next week.

The current unseasonably wet conditions has greatly affected the Winter programme with the Greenkeepers and members alike now hoping for better drying conditions with more members getting back out to play, this was the case on Saturday when 85 cards were taken out for the 15 holes stableford event, the winner was the ever consistent Kevin Keegan (13) who has continued to post great returns all winter, this time with an excellent 41 pts which was three clear of the runner up Declan Doherty (20) with Martin Gormley (14) third with 37 pts, the gross prize went to eight handicapper Declan Lynch with 30 pts.

The previous weeks event went to Brian Kelly with 37 pts with Foncie McNally runner up with 36 pts with Mark Rouse third with 36 pts, the gross went to Keith Patterson with 29 pts.

The Thursday club has progressed to Week 5 in the second phase
Results Week 4 – 1st John Brolly 41pts, 2nd Kevin Keegan 38pts & 3rd Chris McDermott 38 pts.
Week 5 – 1st Foncie McNally 41pts, 2nd Martin Finlay 39pts, 3rd Mark Sharkey 38 pts.
The current Golfer of the Year table is very close to date with several players in close contention, just out in front on 56 pts is Jim Arbuckle with Denis Porter 2nd with 53 pts, who is one ahead of third place Michael Baldrick on 52 with Kevin Keegan 4th on 51 pts.

The Super-Valu Springers league has progressed to week 6 and remains a very close affair at the top of the table with “The 2 PR’S” Currently out in front with 241 pts the team made up of Eric and Barry Reid and William and Johnny Potts have scored very consistently throughout and may take a bit of catching with the team score format in play for the final two weeks.
Currently in second position are “4 Men this year” on 239 pts Michael Baldrick, John Brolly, John Maxwell and Freddie Patterson also playing very steady golf, however the low man Freddie Patterson is out injured for the rest of the campaign and the team will have to choose a replacement well to stay in the frame. In third place are “2 up 2 down” a further 4 shots back on 235, Denis Porter, George Turner, Joe Doherty and Pat McAneny will still have high hopes of winning this title.
There is always an interesting race for the dreaded Wooden Spoon for last place in the event and that unenviable position is currently occupied by the experienced quartet of Eamon McCay, Martin Rouse, Nigel Houston and Brian O’Kane with 213 pts, it is hoped that they can pull out of their current slump and move upwards in the table. The presentation for this event will take place on Friday 23rd March and a sheet is currently available to players to indicate if they are attending the meal.

Congratulations to Brendan McCrory and to Rachel McNally who have been selected as the Junior Captains for 2012.

Well done to regular Golf club performer Jim Devine who has reached the Live shows in the “Voice of Ireland” Jim will be competing on Sunday 11th March hopefully everyone will get behind him and vote.

Club Notes – 6th February 2011

WET WEATHER CONTINUES TO DISRUPT LOCAL GOLFING PROGRAMME

The unseasonably mild but very wet spell of weather has continued to disrupt the local golfing programme at Strabane and in fact it is true testament to the marvellous work on the drainage on the course in recent years that any play has been possible at all.

The delayed Sperrin Springs Winter cup has finally concluded.
With both semi-finals firstly being up for decision, in a very close encounter Oliver Creswell and Aidan Corry just got the better of Ronnie Wiley and Mark Sharkey at the 18th hole while the Father and Son combination of Eric and Barry Reid used their shots well to defeat Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty at the 16th hole, leaving the two victors to slog it out for this years title, the match proved to be a very tense affair with Eric and Barry again using their shots well at important times and despite a strong rally from their opponents the Reid duo wrapped the match up at the final hole with a testing six footer from Barry Reid who held his nerve well many congratulations to the winners who proudly lifted the Leo Kavanagh Memorial Cup.

Thursday Club
The clubs popular Thursday club competition had also fallen victim to the inclement weather at the back end of the phase one stage with five weeks being lost in total, however the weather stayed reasonable for the final day proceedings with 60 players competing for the great prizes up for grabs with first and second place winning a pass for all days of the up coming Irish Open at Portrush.

The winner on the day was Adrian McGonagle who’s golf has improved to no end over the Winter months his total of 36 pts on the day was good enough to win by one Shot from John Brolly who’s blank at the final hole cost him his chance and leaving him a shot back on 35 pts, third went to Ronnie Wiley with 34 pts the same total as Jim Wasson and Hugo McCusker who finished 4th and 5th respectively.

Denis Porter duly wrapped up the Golfer of the Year title with 134 pts, with a tie for second place between Pascal McGillian and Hugh Casey with 124 pts.

Phase two has now started with all club members welcome to join, the final day will be to Greencastle Golf club on Thursday 26th April.

Phase two results to date: week 1
1st Denis Porter 39 pts
2nd Oliver McNally 37 pts
3rd Michael Baldrick 37 pts

Week 2
1st Pascal mcGillian 38pts
2nd Hugo mcCusker 37 pts
