Postman Paddy and Vice-Captain Senan Deliver

The 2012 Sperrin Springs Leo Kavanagh Winter Cup came to an exciting conclusion on Sunday past, with Paddy O’Kane and new Vice-Captain Senan Roarty, taking the honours in a very close encounter with Stephen McCay and Ciaran Duffy so close in fact that the match was finally decided on the 20th hole when the latter pair failed to make a par. The match ebbed and flowed throughout and was played to a superb standard with McCay and Duffy having the edge for the most part and indeed looked the likely winners when they led by 2 holes with three left to play, but a sloppy two holes saw the match level standing on the 18th, two great approach shots from O’Kane and McCay gave them an opportunity from 12 feet to win it, with Paddy’s putt horseshoeing out off the cup leaving Stephen a chance to seal the win but he was unable to close it out, the first extra hole was halved in par but the tie was sealed at the second tie hole when Roarty holed from ten feet for par and the trophy.
In the third and fourth place play-off, Past Captain Sean MacIntyre and Dermott Corry took the win with a good display against Paul O’Neill and Brendan O’Neill.   In Section A – Frankie Connolly and Chris McDermott came out on top from Conal Cooke and John Brolly in second spot, while in Section B the winners were Michael Neeson and Brian Kelly with Cathal McLaughlin and Joey Roulstone the runners up.
Please note the presentation for this event is now on Sunday 23rd December at 8pm Sharp.

The Heads of State bound for Strabane GC

THIS Saturday sees Donegal band The Heads of State play their first Strabane gig since making the final of Sounds Like Summer 2012.

Providing a Mumford and Son-esque folk sound mixed with indie rock and jazz, the Heads of State are by far one of the finest unsigned live acts anywhere in Ireland today.

On Saturday night they take centre stage at Strabane Golf Club, their first local performance since being pipped by Gerard i2 to this year’s Sounds Like Summer title.

Responsible for bringing The Heads of State back to Tyrone is Tommy Forbes. He said it was real coup to have secured the services of such an electrifying live act.

“I’m delighted that the lads have agreed to play at the Golf Club. To secure the booking of such a powerful band is huge for us and hopefully it’s well supported.

“Having seen them at the Alley Theatre earlier this year I can honestly say they provide one heck of a live experience. It should be great night of original material and covers and I’m really looking forward to it,” said Tommy.

The Heads of State will light up the Golf Club from 11pm this Saturday and entry is a steal at just £4.

Club Notes – 19th November 2012

Sunday will be crunch week in this years Sperrin Springs Winter Cup with the four semi-final positions up for decision.
In section (A) long time leaders Paddy O’Kane and Senan Roarty continue to head the table and remain unbeaten after 4 series of matches,  they lead by 1.5pts from their closest rivals who they met this week, Aidan Boyle and John McGettigan, a half match or a win will guarantee their place in the semi-finals although their opponents will also be seeking a win that will also secure their last four place.  Stephen McCay and Ciaran Duffy are currently in third place and also remain unbeaten after taking maximum points last Sunday, they will play Stephen Curry and Gerard Foley knowing that their semi final ambitions are very much still in their own hands. The remaining pairs towards the top of the table will be hoping for a bizarre sequence of results in the other fixtures that will keep their faint hopes alive.

In Section (B) Cathal McLaughlin and Joey Roulstone have only dropped 1 point to date, but still have not secured their top 4 spot although one more point from their fixture with Paul O’Neill and Brendan O’Neill will take them through, although 3.5 pts will secure a place for the O’Neill duo. Dermott Corry and Club Captain, Sean Macintyre still remain with hope despite losing in week two if they can take maximum points from their tie with Martin Keys and Lyndsay Boyd they may just qualify.
A few other pairs are not without ambition too but need to win well and hope for other favourable results.

Winter Cup participants are cordially reminded that the Swiss system of matchplay must be strictly adhered to, all matches must be decided by one point for each nine and two points for the match, any deviation from these rules will see both teams having deemed to have gained no points!

Club Notes – 6th November 2012

Thankfully the weather had improved somewhat to allow play to proceed in week two of the Sperrin Springs Leo Kavanagh Winter Cup, after the washout of the last week, as clearly stated in the rules all matches from the previous week had to replayed no matter what the previous result was this weeks result was the one that counted as last weeks play was now deemed to be cancelled.

In section one the formidable pairing of club president Paddy O’Kane and assistant secretary Senan Roarty have won their opening two games, taking 3.5 pts from their close encounter with Declan Lynch and Pat McAneny on Sunday, and in fact they had to win the last two holes to secure the points, they will play another fancied pairing of Keith Patterson and Joe Breslin this week who also have two opening victories, this should be a very close contest with Roarty and O’Kane just tipped to take the majority of the points on offer. Languishing just behind having won both their opening matches are Darren Crawford and John Brolly and Stephen McCay and Ciaran Duffy who will also meet with the former pair tipped here to edge out their opponents, also with six points from their two opening matches are Barry Patterson and Billy Doherty they will play the fancied pairing of Fred mcGavigan and Maurice Doherty.

In section 2 only one pair have maximum points Martin Keyes and Lindsey Boyd they will play second placed Mickey Neeson and Brian Kelly in the top game and may have their work cut out to remain unbeaten here. The pairings currently in third and fourth also meet both are on 7 points with Gerry Casey and Sean Devine just getting my tip to beat Cathal McLaughlin and Joey Roulstone, Foncie McNally and Brian Forrester look a strong pairing in this section they too have won their two opening matches and should have a very close contest this week with William and Johnny Potts which could go all the way.

Saturday’s single Stableford event is now reduced to 15 holes with a new winter handicapping system in operation.  Saturdays winner was Hugo McCusker (14) one of four players to record 35 pts on the day, the runner up was Declan Lynch (10) with Damian Carey (12) in third, Fred McGavigan took the gross prize with 25 gross points.

Week five of the Thursday club just about survived the wet conditions with only 10 brave souls completing the 15 holes in play, the best card was returned by Michael Doyle with 34 pts with Gerry Quinn featuring for the third week in a row taking second with an amended 31 pts and Kevin Gallagher taking third also with 31 pts, there were only 5 twos recorded.

The weekly quiz resumes this Thursday at 10.00pm with Tommy Forbes asking the questions this week all-welcome!

A big thanks to everyone who attended our brilliant Unplugged Acoustic night for Oscar Knox with the money from the Ryder cup day £1140.00 was raised well done to all concerned.

The Ladies branch are running a Christmas Fayre evening in the clubhouse on Friday 16th November with lots off local businesses in attendance to show off their available products for the Christmas Market it begins at 7.00pm and tickets are available from and Lady committee member or at the bar.

Don’t miss the Brilliant “Heads of State” from Donegal who are playing in the club on Saturday 24th November, they are a brilliant live band who play a mix of excellent covers and their own impressive original music, admission is only £4 for the gig.

Finally on a very sad note we would like to express our sincere condolences to the wife and family of the late Patsy McGarrigle who was a long time member of our club although in poor health in recent years Patsy loved to get out for a few holes whenever he possibly could, he was a very popular and a great character who will be sadly missed by all who knew him, may he rest in peace.

Club Notes – 30th October 2012

The heavy early afternoon rain on Sunday put paid to any chances of completing the matches on week 2 of The Sperrin Springs Winter Cup.  A few of the earlier matches had been completed but they must all be replayed next Sunday when hopefully conditions will be much better.  The shot of the day of the golf that was played went to Stephen McCay who aced the par three 16th hole playing a perfect 6 iron shot.

Saturday Stableford
Saturdays planned stableford event was also a victim of the weather with the early morning frost leaving the greens unplayable, and as a result the temporary winter greens were in use, this as expected led to a much smaller than expected entry with the competition reverting to a Saturday Sweep non-qualifying event. Off the 63 cards that were taken out Foncie McNally (15) led the field home with a good 42 pts winning on break of tie from Aidan Corry (10) with John J Duffy in third with 41 pts.

Next weeks event will be a 15 holes Stableford with the new winter handicap system in operation, further details of this are available from the club web site.

Thursday Club
Week four of the Thursday Club did proceed as planned with Brian Haughey the winner with 40pts over the 16 holes in play, club vice-Captain Ciaran Kelly was the runner up with 39pts with Gerry Quinn taking third place with 38pts.

The early leader in the Golfer of the Year stakes is Dennis Porter from Oliver McNally in second place.

With none of the leading contenders in the race for the Golfer of the Year title things remained as they were with Ryan McGowan adding to his impressive golfing C.V taking the title to add to his recent club championship win, Keith Patterson finished second with Peter Doherty in third position.

What’s on your Wall Open
The club Captain Sean MacIntyre showed a welcome return to form in Thursdays Open event, kindly sponsored by local Company, What’s on Your Wall, Sean’s return of 43 pts was an excellent total on the day and was good enough by a shot from the in form Robert Bell (13) who in turn was a further shot ahead of third placed Kevin McGinley (11) with 41 pts, the gross went to Peter Doherty (5) with 31 gross pts.

Final Mixed Event
Sunday last saw the final Mixed Greensomes event of the year and was dominated by husband and wife duos, the winners were the combination of Olive and Eric Reid with 38 pts over the 15 holes in play, two clear of the runners up Caroline and Frankie Connolly with 36 pts, much credit and thanks is extended to Caroline and Frankie for all their hard work in looking after all the mixed events over the golfing season, they were run most professionally and had great variety for the players. In third place in Sunday’s event were Noreen and Oliver McNally who are always the pair to beat in this format they finished with 35 pts.

The popular Thursday Club phase one will begin this Thursday 4th October, the weekly entry is £3.50, which includes 2’s and the joining fee, is £5.00 all members are invited to join, there are no major changes in rules from last year.

Finally well done to all involved in last Sunday mornings Strider Cup where the clubs over 35’s played their younger counterparts in a charity event played similar to the Ryder Cup, the competition finished in a very tense tie with both teams trying to claim victory on technicalities, the real winner however in this was the selected charity The Oscar Knox Appeal which is better off so far to the tune of £490, Tommy Forbes and a few of the younger club members are organising an Acoustic night on Friday 26th October for the same charity appeal with some great acts already confirming their appearance.

Practicing on the Course

It has come to Council’s attention that there are a few golfers causing a lot of damage on the course by over practicing.
The rule of the club is that if you are practicing alone you can only use 2 balls to practice, if you are in a practicing with someone else then only one ball each is allowed.

It seems that there are a few who dropping 5 or 6 balls at the 150m markers and hitting into the green.  This is totally prohibited, any golfer caught doing this will have their handicap suspended.

Also chipping or putting onto greens with with more than 2 golf balls is also prohibited.

It is your course, so it is in your interest to make sure that the fairways and greens are not being damaged.

Club Notes – Monday 24th September

Nicky Wolfe (9) showed a great return to form at the weekend taking the Strabane/Finn Valley Herald Open medal with an excellent 65 nett on a day when good scoring was at a premium, the sustained south east breeze again making conditions extremely difficult with the course playing regularly to its maximum length with only eight players in a field of 160 breaking par on the day.  A one over par second nine set Wolfe up for his big win just getting the verdict from the runner up Denis Porter (10) who had very uncharacteristically three putted the final green on his way to 65 nett also, in third place two further shots back was Martin Rouse (11) who has been in sparkling form lately, fourth was Peter McKee (16) also again on break of tie with his playing partner on the day Cahir Doherty (17) fifth, also with 67 Nett, Ryan McGowan took the gross with a good three over par round that has done him no harm in the Golfer of the Year merit table with one week to go, Ryan now leads his closest challenger Keith Patterson by five points. The nines on Saturday went to Chris McDermott (12) with 28 ntt for the first nine and Martin Finlay who had 30.5 for the second nine. The Captain in his presentation speech paid tribute to Mr Bernard Vaughan from the Herald for the stunning prizes once again put forward by his company.

W.J. Mc Cormack Open
Billy Doherty (17) took the weekly Thursday Open this week kindly sponsored by W.J Mc Cormack with a welcome return to form posting an excellent 42 pts again on a difficult day for good scoring, the runner up was the very consistent Peter Doherty (5) with 40 pts again both players were in the same fourball and had a good battle for the honours, in third came Dr Ciaran Kelly (12) the club Vice-Captain who seems to be getting his game in great shape for his Captains year in 2013 with some great scoring off late, beaten on break of tie on this occasion for 2nd place finishing with 40 pts. Not too many of the low handicappers were entered on the day and it was left for Robert Bell(14) to claim his first gross prize at Strabane with 24 gross pts!

Strabane Playclub Team Classic
There were 20 teams entered for the final team classic of the season with all the funds going to the local Strabane Playclub, with the main sponsors on the day being Customized Training Services.

The winners not for the first time were the team of Denis Porter (9) Kevin Keegan (15) Pat McAneny (17) and Joe Doherty (16) with an excellent total of 98 pts which was one clear of the runners up Freddie Patterson (5) Barry Patterson (10) Gerry Casey (14) and Donal Cairns (20) who had 97 pts.
Third went to Paul O’Neill, Brendan O’Neill , Lyndsay Boyd and Jimmy Henderson back on 92 pts the same total as fourth placed Oliver McNally, Noreen McNally, Frankie Connolly and Caroline Connolly.

Ladies Golf
The Ladies competition was reduced to 15 holes last Tuesday with Teresa Logue (31) taking this weeks honours with 29 pts, Category one went to Maeve Crowe with 26 pts and Category two was won by Geraldine McCrory with 29 pts.

In mixed golf the competition was down to 10 holes with players only allowed 3 clubs, the runaway winners were Sammy and Rachel Devenney who partnered Olive and Eric Reid to a brilliant 31 pts an amazing score in this format, the runners up Were Jennifer and Martin Rouse with Frankie and Caroline Connolly with 26 pts, next Sunday will see the final Mixed event of the season with the tee available from 1pm –3pm.

Club Notes – 18th September 2012

Aidan Corry (11) has been a model of consistency since his return to golf an he further enhanced his reputation with another excellent victory in Saturday’s Medicare Open, which like so many competitions was played in extremely breezy conditions with the three holes up the stretch of the River Mourne playing particularly difficult. In total there were five returns of 39pts with Corry’s 20pts on the back nine and a strong finish getting him the decision on break of tie from runner up, junior member Shay Callaghan (14) who continues to show much promise, Joe Elliot (17) took third place with Kevin O’Gorman (12) in fourth and Gerard Foley (20) in fifth spot. The gross went to Ben Corry (4) with a one over par 33pts, with the nines going to Jim Potts with 22 pts for the first nine and to Sean Elliot (18) with an impressive 24 pts for the back nine, in total 172 cards were taken out for the event.

Murphy’s On The Green Open
There was a decent midweek entry for the first ever Murphy’s On The Green Restaurant sponsored open with almost 80 entries. Coping best with the high winds on the day was Vice Captain,  Dr Ciaran Kelly (13) who was the comfortable three shot winner, an opening brace of birdies giving him a dream start and he held on well to record 39pts from the runner up Tommy Forbes (14) who was the best of several 36pts returns, Brian Haughey (14) took third for the second consecutive week with Damian McGranaghan taking the gross prize with 29 gross pts.

Ladies Golf
There was huge disappointment for the Ladies betterball team who lost out in the Tyrone and Fermanagh final in the final match on the final green going down by 20.5-19.5 overall to Killymoon G.C.

In the Ladies Foyle Hospice 15 holes competiton this week Olive Reid took the honours with 31 pts ,with the categories going to Rosemary Wilson with 27pts in Category 1 and to Alison Curry who had 30 pts to take category 2.

In Wednesday Nights mixed foursomes played off the Ladies indexes Lady Captain Noreen McNally partnered husband Oliver to another win with 27 pts, just pipping another husband and wife pairing Patricia and Dr Ciaran Kelly who were one shot further back. The mixed Foursomes is rapidly coming to a close with the fading evening light, it is anticipated that next week will be the final week for this season.

Donegal League Final
There was also disappointment for Damian McGranaghan’s Donegal Senior League squad who lost out to Rosapenna in Saturdays final at the Donegal venue going down by 6 matches to one having held a 5-2 lead from the home leg, Freddie Patterson being the clubs only winner on the day.

Matchplay Cups
The first of the match play cups was decided on Friday evening when Lisa Patton and Conal Cooke took the Worcester Cup defeating Lorna Duffy and Declan Lynch by 5/4 in the decider.

In the Jones Cup Sean Forbes will take on Peter Doherty in the final in what should be a very close contest, in the Gallagher Memorial Cup Aidan Corry will play young Eoin O’Neill whilst in the Lawson Cup Tommy Sharkey will play Jim Potts.

In the golfer of the year stakes a close finale is anticipated with Ryan McGowan currently leading the way on 97 pts two clear of Keith Patterson on 95 with Peter Doherty currently third on 84 pts, there are two more weeks to count in the standings.

In junior girls golf the latest competition was kindly sponsored by Claire’s hairdressing, the winner was Rachel McNally with Hannagh McCrory taking cat 1 and Orlagh Neeson second in this category. Club Notes – 11th September 2012

Francie Devine (10) was the main prize winner in Saturdays Dixie’s Bar sponsored stableford event which again attracted a large field at Strabane, with over 175 cards being taken out, a steady outward nine of 19 pts looked like an ordinary round for Francie but an excellent inward effort saw him accumulate a further 23 pts despite a double bogey 6 at the 15th hole to return a winning 42 pts and see his handicap return to single figures. The runner up on the day was Senan Roarty (13) who by his own admission has been having a mediocre golfing season but he returned to form on Saturday to return an excellent 41 pts, third went to ever improving junior member Ciaran Neeson (12) with 40 pts thanks to a fine closing birdie three at the 18th, his playing partner Michael Baldrick (18) had stood on the 18th tee with 40pts on his card and four clear of Ciaran but a lapse in concentration saw him blank the final hole and he had to be content with fourth place as a result, the final nett prize went to Joe Curry (16) also with 40 pts, the gross prize went to the ever consistent Keith Patterson with a one over par 35 gross pts. The presentations for this competition will take place this Friday 14th Sept at 8.30pm sharp all winners or their representatives are asked to be in attendance.

Thursday’s event was the J.D. Print Open which was played in testing conditions the strong breeze that prevailed for most of the day made good scoring pretty difficult, the winning card was returned late in the evening Francie Conwell (20) taking full advantage of the more benign evening conditions to record a winning 40 pts which just relegated Damian Carey (14) into second place, Brian Haughey (14) who had played in the mornings first fourball held on to take the visitors prize with third going to Conal Cooke (2) with 38 pts also, the gross went to Ryan McGowan with 32 gross pts, this presentation is also on Friday 14th September.

Monday Open
There was a relatively small turnout for the seasons final Monday Open which went to Dermott Corry (17) with 39 pts, the runner up was Eamon McGlinchey (17) also with 39 pts with Sean Elliot (18) in third with 38 pts, Patrick Kennedy took the gross with a one under gross round of 68 which transferred to 37 pts.

The popular J.J.’s team events will resume next Monday 17th September.

Owen Roes Team Classic
There was a brilliant turnout for Sundays teams classic organised by Owen Roes GAA Club with no fewer than 45 teams participating despite the inclement weather conditions on the day, the Club Captain Sean Macintyre congratulated Owen Roes for their tremendous effort in getting so many teams to play and for their marvellous array of prizes which he commented were the best seen at the club this year.

The winners of the event were the team of mostly “young guns” Conor Sharkey, Ryan McColgan, Caolan Crawford aided by Fred McShane who added a calming older influence to the side on their way to totalling a great score of 101 pts, which was good enough by two pts from the runners up Declan McColgan, Gerry McColgan, Aidy McDermott and Raymond McDermott with 99 pts, third went to Donal Cairns, Cathal McLaughlin, Gerry Casey and Paddy McCrossan with 96 pts ahead on break of tie from fourth placed Paul O’Neill, Brendan O’Neill, Martin Keys and Jimmy Henderson. The best placed all Ladies team were Mary Duffy, Donna Doherty, Rosemary Wilson and Olive Reid.

Ladies News
The Ladies final 18 holes competition for the season was played on Tuesday last when there was a good turnout for the Bertie Colhoun Cup.
The winner was Mandy Coyne (9) with an excellent 38 pts, the categories went to Rosemary Wilson Cat 1-33 pts and Cat 2 went to Mary McGuigan with 37 pts.

Congratulations to Jennifer Rouse who has secured the Ladies Golfer of the Year title for a second consecutive year a great achievement for someone relatively new to the game finishing on 57 pts three clear of second placed Bernie O’Kane.

Last Wednesday saw a great entry for the annual Sausage Sizzle event with 24 pairs competing. The winners were Lorna Duffy and Declan Lynch with 35 pts with Annette Patton and Oliver McNally in the runners up berth with 33 pts one clear of third placed Noreen McNally and Denis Porter.

Inter Club Teams
Pride of place this week goes to our Lawson Cup team, under the Captaincy of Aidan Coyle, who will take the trophy back to Strabane after a thumping 14.5- 1.5 win over Castlehume G.C in Sundays thrilling second leg at Strabane, trailing 12-4 from the away tie the home team battled strongly to close out all four matches to take the cup for the first time since 2009.

Not so good news for Garvin Godfrey’s O’Hare Cup team who relinquished their title also against Castlehume G.C. going down by 12-4 in Monday’s second leg, having led only 11-5 from the home tie a fortnight ago.

Other Club Notes
