Golf Notes – 3rd May 2011
TOUGH CONDITIONS AT STRABANE
A strong easterly breeze that got up in mid-morning made scoring conditions extremely tough for Saturday’s Devine Sand & Gravel Stableford Open at Strabane.
Jim Arbuckle (18) however found the wind and the lightning fast greens to his liking returning a winning 42 pts, which was a full three shots clear of the nearest challenger Adrian McLaughlin (10) who was the best of a host of players finishing on 39 pts, third place went to Brian Forrester (18) with Barry Patterson (9) back in fourth spot, Cyril Downey (24) took the final nett prize also with 39 pts. Saturdays gross award went to Kieran Doherty (5) with an excellent round of four over par in the tough conditions, the nines went to Pat McGuigan who had 23 pts for the first nine and to Peter Doherty (jnr) who had 21 pts for the second nine.
Paddy Doyle (12) has been a model of consistency this season to date and he totally dominated proceedings in Thursdays Open stableford event, running out the winner by a remarkable five shots from Paul McLaughlin (19) in the runners up berth, and Adrian McLaughlin (11) in third place with 38 pts, Enda Kennedy once again showed his game is in good shape ahead of his defence of the Frylite Scratch Cup this weekend taking the gross on Thursday with 33 pts.
There was a good turnout of over 100 players for last weeks Easter Monday competition with Enda McDonnell (18) leading the field home with a fantastic score of 43 pts, two clear of the fast improving Niall Coulter (18) with Rodney “Toot” Porter again featuring in the prizes taking third place with 39 pts, Enda Kennedy again took the gross with 33 pts, Newtownstewart’s John mc Namee took the visitors prize with 36 pts.
Friday’s Bank Holiday Betterball competition went to Foncie McNally and Anthony Brennan with a great score of 46 pts, Kevin Keegan partnered George Turner to second place with 44 pts with John Brolly and Michael Baldrick in third with 44 pts also.
Twenty-four pairs played in Wednesday nights mixed team competition with Lorna Duffy, Tommy Sharkey, Donna Doherty and Rory Doherty emerging as the winners with 41 pts, which was three clear of second placed Caroline Connolly, Ryan McGowan, Anne Duffy and Cathal McLaughlin.
In ladies golf the Easter Basket competition was won in some style by Lisa Patton with an excellent 44 pts with Margaret Bonnar the runner up with 39 pts.
Commiserations to Senan Roarty’s Jimmy Bruen team who due to a poor finish narrowly missed out on qualification for the match play stages at Ballybofey on Sunday last, Paddy O’Kane takes his Pierce Purcell squad to Newtownstewart this Sunday and will be hoping for better luck on this occasion.
Our Ulster Cup team also bowed out of this year’s event going to a strong Killymoon team on Sunday last.
Better news for our junior Fred Daly team who moved on to the next Stage with an emphatic 5-2 away win over Fintona Boys last week giving them an overall 12- 2 match win.
