Golf Notes – 10th May 2011

City of Derry G.C member Kealan Quigg took the Frylite Senior Scratch Cup on Sunday at Strabane, Kealan obviously has a liking for the Ballycolman course finishing as runner up last year his collective two round total of 148 was good enough to take this years title by three shots on a day when the strong breeze especially in the second round made scoring almost impossible, despite the pristine condition of the Strabane course.  The runner up was Strabane’s Darren Crawford on 151 with an excellent return of 74 for his second round, in third place came City of Derry’s Colin Starrett also on 151 with defending champion Enda Kennedy in fourth place a further 3 shots back on 154, Enda had an horrendous 11 on the most difficult hole on the day the par 4, 9th which was surprisingly played from the furthest back tee into the teeth of the wind, many other cards went astray here leading to a host of no returns on the day!

Omagh’s Sean Kelly took the first 18 prize with Conal Cooke taking the second 18 prize.  In the nett section Martin McDermott took the honours with 144 nett with Patrick Kennedy second with 147 nett with Stephen McCay third with 148 nett, the best first round nett went to Sean Forbes while young Eoin O’ Neill underlined his great potential with a nett 71 for round two to take that prize in all there were visitors from 15 different clubs who participated in this years tournament.

Medicare Open
Conditions for Saturdays Medicare Open were again difficult the swirling breeze keeping the scoring generally low, the winner was Foncie O’Kane (19) with an excellent return of 63 nett which was good enough to win by two shots from Andrew Connolly (14) with Michael Neeson (9) not for the first time this season finishing in the prizes in third place with 65 nett also, James Langan (20) took 4th place with 66 nett and Martin Foley (23) in 5th place with nett 67.  The gross prize went to Darren Crawford(3) with a four over par round with the nines going to Paddy O’Kane and to Joey Roulstone, the presentation for this event takes place on Friday 20th May at 9.30pm all winners are requested to be in attendance.

Thursday Club
Rosapenna G.C hosted this years Thursday Club final day event with 80 players travelling for a very enjoyable day to the Donegal Links course.
