Club Notes – 26th April 2011

The sun continued to shine over the weekend leaving perfect weather conditions for the 206 golfers who took out cards in Saturday’s Caffe Fresco Stableford Open although in general the scoring was not as high as had been in recent weeks due to the extra growth in the roughs and the much faster greens, the winner was relative newcomer to the game Gerard Stewart (24) who with a lot of practice has shown rapid signs of improvement lately and he held his nerve to return a winning 41 pts in Saturdays event, getting home by a single point from Barry Callaghan (19) whose 40pts had led for most of the day, third went to Past Captain Seamus Friel (19) with 39 pts with Junior Captain Jordan Arthur (8) taking fourth spot with 38 pts and the very consistent Paddy Doyle(13) taking the final Nett prize with 38 pts also. Darren Crawford’s three over par round was good enough to take the gross prize with the nines going to junior member Kevin Gallagher (12) who had 23 pts for the first nine and to William Potts (24) with 22 pts for the back nine.

Last Monday’s Open Stableford went for the second consecutive week to a visiting player with Portsalon’s Joe Coyle (7) shooting a fine level par 43 pts to take the spoils the runner up was the very quickly improving Rodney (Toot) Porter (19) who almost “took all” with an excellent 42 pts the same total as Enda Kennedy (scr) who returned a scintillating 6 under par round and must have felt that his first singles victory was close at hand, the gross award went to Ben Corry (4) with 36 gross pts with Shane Quigley from Castlebar G.C. taking the visitors prize with 34 pts.

Week 14 of the Thursday Club was the final week of the competition with Fred mc Shane (16) claiming his first win with an excellent 43 pts getting up on break of tie from Terence McDermott (20) with Patsy Rouse (13) taking third with 40 pts, the visitors prize went to Barry Whyte with 39 pts.

The golfer of the year title was also decided with Thursday club convenor Tommy Forbes picking up two points to finish on 50 pts just pipping  Foncie McNally by a single point for the Sports Centre trophy, Franke Gallagher finished in third place with 44 pts overall.
A reminder that the Thursday club outing to Rosapenna is next Thursday the 5th May all members are welcome to attend further details are posted on the notice board.

In Ladies golf this week there was a good turnout for the Camus Cup with the trophy going to Caroline Connolly (28) who has been playing great golf lately she returned an excellent score of 65 Nett, which was just one clear of Junior member Abbey Maxwell (36) a name that is sure to feature frequently in the coming months definitely a great prospect for Ladies golf in Strabane that score Gave Abbey category two with category one going to Lauren Patton (16) with 69 Nett.

Club Notes – 19th April 2011

Saturdays P.G.McGillion Motors Open Stableford saw another huge turnout at Strabane with 192 players taking out cards, with the course in pristine condition and with  favourable weather conditions there were some fantastic scores returned on the day, with a break of tie needed to separate the top four players who all finished on 43 pts. Thanks to a superior back nine of 24 pts the winner was Dr John Etherson (17) who picked up his first major competition win thanks mainly to his fine finish, which contained birdies at the 15th and 16th holes. Finishing in the runners up berth was Seamus Foley (13) who had been in the first Fourball of the day and almost managed to hold on for an overdue win, third place went to Eugene Patton (23) who has been showing steady signs of improvement lately and fourth was Conor Sharkey (9) who will regret a double bogey six at the 14th hole which tainted an otherwise flawless card and cost him a lifetime best return of level par. The final Nett prize went to Declan McColgan (12) with 42 pts with the gross going to Enda Kennedy (scr) with a brilliant three under par round which yielded 39 pts, the nines went to Anthony Callaghan with 23 pts for the first nine and to Terry Doherty (12) with 23 pts for the second nine.
