Golf Club Notes – 7th March 2011

“2 Up 2 Down” have an unassailable lead going into the last week of the Supervalu Springers league after shooting another impressive 51.7 points. Denis Porter, George Turner, Joe Doherty and Pat McAneny are now 9 points clear, even though” 3 Men and a Little Lady” did close the gap by one point.  Michael Baldrick, John Brolly, Niall Coulter and Freddie Patterson returned 52.7 points to take Sundays sweep.  But with a week to go, a 9 point gap will be almost impossible to claw back although they would seem to have the runners up berth secured  going into the last week, as they are now 5.3 points ahead of “Teenage Kicks”.  They returned  50.3 points. Frankie Connolly, Paddy O Kane, Senan Roarty and Stephen Alexander are now 5.4 points clear of Them Boys in fourth place. With the top three places done and dusted, 4th place is all to play for going into the final week. Barry Whyte, Frankie Gallagher, Jason Kelly and Fred McShane currently hold 4th spot, but they are only 0.7 points clear of 2 P-R’s in 5th, and 1.7 points of the Wee Lads in 6th. So the 4th and final prize is still up for grabs heading into the final week.

There were some fantastic golf scores posted on Saturday. It was the first competition of the season to be played over 18-holes. With calm, dry conditions, plus the Winter Tees still in use , high scoring was the order of the day. Some 31 players had better than 40 points or more.  First prize on Saturday went to Enda McDonnell who shot a mammoth 48 points. Runner-up with 48 points also was Aidan Corry.  Third place went to the in-form Michael Baldrick with 47 points.  Franke Gallagher took full advantage of most of the low handicappers playing the Alliance at Portnoo to claim the gross prize with a very creditable 35 gross points.

There was another great turnout for week 7 of the Thursday club with almost 70 players taking out cards, the winner was Tommy Forbes with an excellent 37 points over 15 holes, the runner up was Dr Ciaran Kelly with 35 points while Hugo McCusker took third with 34 points on break of tie.   The Thursday club continues on St Patricks day with a 16 holes event, it is hoped this competition will be off the regular tees without the Winter mats in use.

In Junior Golf Patrick Roarty took the Sports Centre junior Springers title just getting the better of Caolan Crawford in a very high standard Matchplay final despite a spirited fight back from his opponent Roarty eventually ran out the 2 and 1 winner.  Third place went to Ciaran Roarty who finished the league on 40 pts while new Junior Captain Jordan Arthur took 4th with 26pts.  In section (B) Brandon O’neill was the convincing winner  with a great total of 64 points with Eathan Corry the runner up with 54 pts Conor Byrne was third on 48 pts with Garbhan Roulstone 4th on 44 pts.

Sunday’s Junior Stableford competition went to Ciaran Neeson with 44 points.
