There was a huge entry on Saturday for the season’s first Open Competition, The B McNamee Open Stableford with victory going to Gerry Glover (16) who played in the final fourball of the day, almost finishing in the dark. His brilliant score of 45pts was set up with an excellent one over par first nine giving him 25 pts to the turn, a further 20 pts on the back nine left him two clear of his nearest challenger the ever improving Niall Coulter (24) who had led the competition for most of the day with 43 pts, third place went to another relatively new player Dermott Corry (19) with 42 pts, Corry has been showing some great early season form, fourth place went to Peter Doherty Snr( 28) with 41 pts with the final nett prize going to Michael Doyle(16) with 40 pts, Saturdays gross prize went to Patrick Kennedy with a very tidy round of one over par. 14-year-old takes first prize in John Kelly Competition

The first Senior Qualifying competition of the year got underway on Saturday, and there was a great  turnout of 169 players for the John Kelly Competition. It was a calm, bright day for the event, and it was played off the Summer  tees.

The John Kelly is traditionally,  the first competition of the new season  and  was won by  14-year-old junior member  Caolan Crawford, who returned a fantastic 42 points. A score of +8 gross at the tender age of 14.  Caolan is a huge talent with a bright future, and it certainly won’t be his only  win in senior golf.  Runner-up with 41 points was Martin McCallion. Picking up where he left off last year, 2010 Golfer of the Year, Keith Patterson was in third with 41 points. The Gross Prize went to 2 Handicapper Paddy Kennedy, who shot 35 gross  points.

Meanwhile Category One went to Kevin Neeson on  who had 40 points. Category two was won by Cahir Doherty who shot 38 points and Category three was won by Jim Potts who shot 42 points. The front and back nine prizes went to Freddie Patterson and Martin Gormley respectfully.

There was also a big turnout for the St Patricks Day competition. Thursdays Open was played over 16 holes and played off the yellow tees for the first time this year. The winner with a brilliant 42 pts  was Adrian McGonagle, runner-up was Oliver McNally with 37 points and third was Seamus McPhilemy with 34 points. The visitors  prizes were  won by Johnny Potts, who shot 38 points and Oliver Creswell who returned 37 pts.

The New Captains drive in took place on Sunday last with 30 pairs playing in the Mixed greensomes event that followed, the clear  winners were Annette Patton and Oliver McNally with a brilliant 49 pts a full seven points clear of the runners up Caroline and Frankie Connolly with 42 pts the same total as third placed Teresa Logue and Paul McGill, the gross prize went to Lauren Patton and Conor Sharkey with 27 gross points..

Strabane Golf Clubs Junior Fred Daly team played Royal Belfast Golf Club on Sunday morning in the first round of this year’s event and came out victorious, 6.5 points to 0.5 points. The Strabane team will travel to Belfast with a healthy advantage in a  fortnights  time for the second leg.

This weeks competition the B. McNamee Open will be the first off the back  White markers.

‘2 UP 2 DOWN’ Secure Springers League

“2 UP 2 DOWN “ SECURE SPRINGERS LEAGUE

As expected “2 Up 2 Down” did enough on Sunday to secure the Super Valu Springers League having built up an unassailable lead in previous weeks, eventually running out the clear winners by a massive eight points, Denis Porter, Joe Doherty, Pat mcAneny and George Turner had indeed led from week two of the nine week competition which thankfully this year was not affected by course closures although conditions for the final weeks scramble event were extremely testing.

The very consistent quartet of Freddie Patterson, Michael Baldrick, John Brolly and Niall Coulter also held on to the runners up position with a steady return of 47.7 on Sunday finishing ahead of “Teenage Kicks” Paddy O’ Kane, Senan Roarty, Frankie Connolly and Stephen Alexander had the days best score with a brilliant 50.3 helped by a blistering triple birdie start to take Sundays sweep in convincing fashion.

The main contest in the final week was for fourth spot with“Them Boys” just doing enough to hold on Franke Gallagher, Fred McShane, Barry Whyte and Jason Kelly taking the final team prize.
The runners up in the Sunday sweep were “Sand Pit” Keith Patterson, Sean Devine, Bernard Vaughan and Sean Sweeney returning a combined scramble total of 49.7 with “B.K.L.N.” taking third place with another good score of 49.2

All players are reminded that the presentation meal takes place this Saturday night at 8.00pm  With music Later with Jim Devine everyone welcome….

Saturday’s play unfortunately fell foul to the elements with the early morning snow that  covered the course putting an end to any prospects of any play.

Play however had gone ahead in week eight of the Thursday Club with the very much in form Franke Gallagher taking this weeks event with a solid return of 36 pts (BOT) in windy conditions, Oliver McNallys score of 36 pts took second place with John Brolly taking third with 34 pts.

The Thursday Club golfer of the year table is headed by John Brolly at present with 29 pts, closely followed by Michael Baldrick and Foncie McNally on 28 pts with Oliver McNally 4th on 27pts and Denis Porter 5th with 26 pts.

There were 9 teams for Mondays Team event with Ronnie Wiley, Jim Wasson, Hugh Casey and Denis Porter taking the honours with 92.5 pts, followed by Terence McGranaghan, Vincent Bradley, Paddy Doyle and Pat McAneny the runners up with 90.5

The new Ladies season has already commenced with last weeks winner being Lady vice-Captain Noreen McNally with a fantastic return of 38 points over 15 holes, Category (1) went to Lisa Patton with 29pts with Laura McCay taking category (2) with 33pts.

With decent weather forecast for this weekend, it is anticipated that the mens 2011 season will get in to full swing with the first scheduled competition, the John Kelly Stableford kicking things off on Saturday.

This Sunday sees the new Captains drive-in and mixed Greensomes event at 1.00pm with lots of entertainment after in the clubhouse with Jim Devine and guests providing the music highlighted by a Ladies versus Gents Back to back competition at 6.30pm

Best Wishes are extended to our Fred Daly team who under the auspices of Stephen McCay take on Royal Belfast also on Sunday at home in what may prove to be a difficult fixture.

Golf Club Notes – 7th March 2011

“2 Up 2 Down” have an unassailable lead going into the last week of the Supervalu Springers league after shooting another impressive 51.7 points. Denis Porter, George Turner, Joe Doherty and Pat McAneny are now 9 points clear, even though” 3 Men and a Little Lady” did close the gap by one point.  Michael Baldrick, John Brolly, Niall Coulter and Freddie Patterson returned 52.7 points to take Sundays sweep.  But with a week to go, a 9 point gap will be almost impossible to claw back although they would seem to have the runners up berth secured  going into the last week, as they are now 5.3 points ahead of “Teenage Kicks”.  They returned  50.3 points. Frankie Connolly, Paddy O Kane, Senan Roarty and Stephen Alexander are now 5.4 points clear of Them Boys in fourth place. With the top three places done and dusted, 4th place is all to play for going into the final week. Barry Whyte, Frankie Gallagher, Jason Kelly and Fred McShane currently hold 4th spot, but they are only 0.7 points clear of 2 P-R’s in 5th, and 1.7 points of the Wee Lads in 6th. So the 4th and final prize is still up for grabs heading into the final week.

There were some fantastic golf scores posted on Saturday. It was the first competition of the season to be played over 18-holes. With calm, dry conditions, plus the Winter Tees still in use , high scoring was the order of the day. Some 31 players had better than 40 points or more.  First prize on Saturday went to Enda McDonnell who shot a mammoth 48 points. Runner-up with 48 points also was Aidan Corry.  Third place went to the in-form Michael Baldrick with 47 points.  Franke Gallagher took full advantage of most of the low handicappers playing the Alliance at Portnoo to claim the gross prize with a very creditable 35 gross points.

There was another great turnout for week 7 of the Thursday club with almost 70 players taking out cards, the winner was Tommy Forbes with an excellent 37 points over 15 holes, the runner up was Dr Ciaran Kelly with 35 points while Hugo McCusker took third with 34 points on break of tie.   The Thursday club continues on St Patricks day with a 16 holes event, it is hoped this competition will be off the regular tees without the Winter mats in use.

In Junior Golf Patrick Roarty took the Sports Centre junior Springers title just getting the better of Caolan Crawford in a very high standard Matchplay final despite a spirited fight back from his opponent Roarty eventually ran out the 2 and 1 winner.  Third place went to Ciaran Roarty who finished the league on 40 pts while new Junior Captain Jordan Arthur took 4th with 26pts.  In section (B) Brandon O’neill was the convincing winner  with a great total of 64 points with Eathan Corry the runner up with 54 pts Conor Byrne was third on 48 pts with Garbhan Roulstone 4th on 44 pts.

Sunday’s Junior Stableford competition went to Ciaran Neeson with 44 points.

With only two weeks remaining in the Super Valu Springer’s League the current leaders” 2 up 2 down” would seem to have already built up an unassailable lead after another convincing outing on Sunday past in the first of the scramble events, they returned a winning total of 49.7 which was seven under par gross for the competition leaving George Turner, Pat McAneny, Joe Doherty and Denis Porter with a   10 point lead after team 20 “3 men and a little Lady” who had a poor week by their standards  fell back towards the chasing pack.  Second in the Sunday sweep were “Teenage Kicks” with 49.3 they have consolidated third position and will still have aspirations of finishing higher, “Them Boys” took the final prize on Sunday with a solid return of 48.6 , next week’s format will again be a scramble format and players should note that the presentation meal will be held on Saturday 19th March at 8.30pm.
