New Rules of Golf from R & A

Following an exhaustive, four-year review of golf’s 34 playing Rules, nine principal Rules have been amended to improve clarity and ensure penalties are proportionate.  Significant changes include:

•  Ball Moving After Address (Rule 18-2b). A new exception is added which exonerates the player from penalty if their ball moves after it has been addressed when it is known or virtually certain that they did not cause the ball to move. For example, if it is a gust of wind that moves the ball after it has been addressed, there is no penalty and the ball is played from its new position.
•  Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions (Rule 13-4). Exception 2 to this Rule is amended to permit a player to smooth sand or soil in a hazard at any time, including before playing from that hazard, provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and Rule 13-2 (improving lie, area of intended stance or swing or line of play) is not breached.

Michael Bannon Coaching Day

Rory McIlroy’s golf coach, Michael Bannon made a full days visit to the club on Wednesday 2nd November for a coaching session with 50 of our junior members, a very enjoyable day was had by all and hopefully our junior section will reap the benefits of this brilliant day with both Michael Bannon and P.G.A professional Geoff Loughrey who was instrumental in setting this day up for his former club.

Many thanks also to Shaun McGonagle who gave a very inspirational talk on the mind side of the game later in the evening, a talk that was thoroughly enjoyed by the large crowd of golfers that attended.

Club Notes – 21st November 2011

Night time golf proved a great success on Friday night past, with heightened Media Coverage of the event adding even more to the enjoyment of the spectacle, including Sky Sports News who were present to record clips and interviews from the evening.  In all 75 players, both Ladies and Gents, took to the fairways armed with a clear golf ball with a luminous stick inside, their necklace glow stick and some with miners type lights which had to be switched off while playing their shots.  The top five holes were lit up with beacons like an airport runway showing the competitors the route to take, the greens and bunkers were similarly lit up in different colours and putting was aided by further glowing sticks in the holes. Almost £1500 was raised on the evening for the local Branch of C.R.Y., Cardiac Risk in the Young, with the present chairperson of the group, former Tyrone GAA Captain Brian Dooher also competing in the event. There was a close finish to the event with no fewer than seven players equalling the best score of the night nine points and on break of tie. The winner was declared as Oliver McNally, with Denis Porter and Kevin Keegan second and third.

Many thanks to all the sponsors of the night and to the organising committee headed by Vice –President Seamus Friel aided by James Patton, Jimmy Duncan, Sean McIntyre, Michael Kennedy, Gerry Glover and Brian O’Kane.  Hopefully this will become an annual event in the future.

Saturday Stableford competitions.

Last Saturday’s similar event went to Joey Roulstone with an eye catching 39 pts, one ahead of John Brolly on 38 pts and Denis Porter on 36 pts the gross went to Martin Rouse with 24 pts.

Thursday club
Last weeks Thursday club was a near washout with only a handful of brave souls completing the course in the horrendous weather conditions.

First went to Adrian McGonagle with 33 pts, 2nd Mark Sharkey 32 pts and 3rd Frankie Gallagher with 31 pts, the visitors prize went to Mark Rouse with 32 pts. The previous weeks competition was dominated by Pascal McGillian who’s 42 pts won by a country mile, the runner up was Danny Duffy with 36 pts and third went to Hugh Casey with 35 pts.

In the race for the golfer of the year title Ronnie Wiley is out in front on 99 pts with Denis Porter 2nd on 90 pts and Hugh Casey 3rd with 86 pts with 6 weeks remaining of the first phase.

Sperrin Springs Winter Cup
This Sunday will see the final week of qualifying in The Sperrin Springs Winter cup with all the semi-final places still up for grabs in what should be an intriguing weeks play with several key fixtures set to determine the eventual qualifiers in either of the sections.

In section (B) the proceedings are slightly more clear cut with Ronnie Wiley and Mark Sharkey back on top on 20 pts after two back to back wins they will qualify if they take a solitary point from this weeks match against John Hegarty and John Tinney, they will be joined in the semi-final by William Potts and Johnny Potts if they can win their last fixture against Stephen Curry and Gerard Foley, with Eric and Barry Reid also still in contention despite losing to the leaders on Sunday Past.

Night Golf – Rules

Strabane Golf Club members can have fun as they test their skills in a unique competition – Night Golf Challenge on Friday 18th November 2011, open to ladies & gents.

Golfers will play the top five holes using glow-in-the-dark golf balls and follow a course marked with glowing markers to guide them from hole to hole.

Night Golf Rules

1 Play all shots with your club face parallel to the glowstick in the ball ( this prevents the glowstick falling out), please check that the glowstick is secure when you are placing it on the mat.
2 Always use your winter mat – normal winter rules apply
No DRIVERS (3 woods are ok).  The ball can damage the face of the drivers
4 Do not shine torches on the ball when hitting or putting
5 No torches allowed on the green to read putts or when putting
6 When leaving the green, flash your torches on and off so that the fourball behind know when you are leaving the green.

We want people to enjoy themselves, and have a bit of fun.  But safety is our No 1 priority, please be very careful.  Make sure you stay away when people in your fourball are taking their shot.  Also make sure that the fourball in front has moved away and signalled to you, before playing your shot.

There will be entertainment in the club afterwards, presentation should be around 11pm.

Course Slowly Recovering

As a result of the recent monsoon like conditions the golf course has taken an early Winter battering from the rains, leaving parts of the course extremely wet especially in the semi-roughs which have become particularly difficult to play from and as a result the Winter mats have had to be introduced somewhat earlier this year than was anticipated, however thanks to the sterling work from our greens-staff play has been possible for the most part.

Denis Porter (9) took the previous weeks 15 holes Stableford event with a fine 37 pts thanks to an eye catching one under gross back nine to finish ahead of Declan Lynch (8) who’s score of 34 pts was creditable in the conditions, third went to Dermott Corry (19) with 33 pts, while the gross prize was claimed by Ben Corry (4) with 28 gross pts.

With the more favourable conditions for play on Saturday past there was a much better entry for the weekly Stableford event which went to Shane McLaughlin (12), who has taken his great summer form into the Autumn returning a blistering 39 pts to romp home from the runner up Eugene Patton (22) who had 36 pts, the same total as third placed Noel Kelly (13) with the gross on this occasion going to Keith Patterson with 27pts.

Thursday Club
The popular Thursday Club event is in full swing and has reached week 6 in the first phase. Week fives competition went to Charlie Patton with 36 pts with Aidan Corry the runner up with 35 pts and Hugo McCusker third with 34 pts. Week six went to Denis Porter with 36 pts with Brian Haughey the runner up with 35 pts and Jimmy Henderson claiming 3rd with 35pts also.

Denis Porter now leads the way in the golfer of the year table with 84 pts just one clear of Ronnie Wiley with 83 pts.

Winter Cup
The Sperrin Springs Winter Cup has progressed through week 4 with the league tables in both sections very close affairs. In section (A)

Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty currently lead the way on 14 pts having won all four off their matches to date the latest win seeing them overcoming the challenge of the highly fancied David Mullen and Ryan Stevenson securing 3.5 pts, their opponent this week will be John Maxwell and John Brolly who have quietly moved into second place despite losing their match in week 3, these two will meet in this weeks series of matches in what should be a close encounter. Currently third in the section are Keith Patterson and Billy Doherty on 12 pts and they take on 4th placed David Friel and George McCay this week.

In section (B) There is a three way tie at the table summit after leaders Ronnie Wiley and Mark Sharkey lost on Sunday past to Stephen Curry and Gerard Foley who themselves have moved into contention just half a point behind the leaders. This weeks fixtures will see Wiley and Sharkey against fellow table toppers William Potts and Johnny Potts with Eric and Barry Reid taking on Curry and Foley.

Monday Club
Ten teams took part in last weeks Monday Club event with Kevin Keegan, Charlie Patton, Oliver McNally and Chris McDermott the winners with 79.5 pts, the runners up were Denis Porter, George Turner, Jim Wasson and Hugh Casey with 78.75 pts.

Michael Bannon Coaching Day
Rory McIlroys golf coach Michael Bannon made a full days visit to the club on Wednesday last for a coaching session with 50 of our junior members, a very enjoyable day was had by all and hopefully our junior section will reap the benefits of this brilliant day with both Michael Bannon and P.G.A professional Geoff Loughrey who was instrumental in setting this day up for his former club,

Many thanks also to Sean McGonagle who gave a very inspirational talk on the mind side of the game later in the evening, a talk that was thoroughly enjoyed by the large crowd of golfers that attended.

John Duffy Junior Winter Cup
In section (A) the left handed duo of Caolan Crawford and Conor mcCool lead the way on 7 pts, with Ryan McGowan and Shay Callaghan second on 6 pts, while in section (B) Matthew Campbell has built an early lead on 18 pts with Adam McGill second on 12 pts, In section (C) Thomas McConnell leads on 14 pts with Conor Bratton and Cormac Hamilton joint second on 10 pts.

but winter mats will be in use from Saturday 29th October.  Anyone who would like to get a new one, they will be available from the club shop.

Club Notes – 24th October 2011

Despite the continued spell of horrendous wet weather the first two weeks play in the Sperrin Springs Winter cup have been played with last Sundays play over a reduced 15 holes course.

In Section (B) – the early leaders are Ronnie Wiley and Mark Sharkey who are on a maximum 8 points from their two fixtures to date, with Kevin O’Gorman and Andrew Walls lying in second place with 7.5 pts, these two pairings meet this week in the top match, also with two wins from two are Johnny Potts and Declan Doherty with 7 pts they taken on Stephen Curry and Gerard Foley who are on 5 pts.

In Section (A) – the only pairing still with maximum pts are David Friel and George McCay, their opposition this week are Fred McGavigan and Maurice Doherty who are handily placed only a half point behind them, the other top fixture in this section will see John Maxwell and John Brolly take on David Mullen and Ryan Stevenson in what should be a very close encounter.

Saturday Singles
Ryan McGowan (6) came home in first place in the recent Saturday qualifier with a modest 37 pts in tough conditions just getting the better off Paul McGill (8) on break of tie with Dermott Cairns in third place with 36 pts, Keith Patterson took the gross with 29 pts.

Last Saturdays qualifier saw a much reduced field competing with again the inclement weather the major factor, the winner was Billy Doherty (16) who held on despite a blank at the last hole to win with 35 pts a point clear of Vice-Captain Sean McIntyre With Brian Kelly third also with 34 pts, Paul McGill this time took the gross prize with 24 pts.

Thursday Club

Junior Golfers of the Year

Club Notes – 10th october 2011

Huge turnout for Captains Outing

A record 162 players travelled to Ballybofey G.C last weekend for the annual Captains outing on a day when thankfully the weather stayed kind and conditions were ideal for good scoring

With 40 players either equalling or bettering the par for the course,  many thanks also to the host club Ballybofey for the use of their facilities and many compliments were paid to the condition of the course on the day.
The winner on the day with a fine score of 44 pts was Albert McNally (19) just narrowly beating Past Captain Seamus Friel (21) on break of tie, third went to young Kevin Gallagher (8) 40 pts with home member Freddie Wilson (9) putting his local knowledge to good use recording the same total of 40 pts, 5th went to Denis Porter (9) with Hugo mcCusker (13) taking 6th both with 39 pts.

Congratulations to our Captain Brian O’Kane on his year to date, the huge turnout for this event is testament to his hard work and popularity throughout his Captain’s year.  Also thanks to the sponsors of the event, Caldwell’s Motor Factors, Gerry Casey and Sean Devine and to Tommy and his catering staff for the superb meal laid on for the players on their return.

Saturday Qualifier
There will be a Saturday 18 holes qualifying competition on each Saturday in October weather permitting, the first of which was won by George Turner (25) who put his unique golf swing to good use in romping home three clear of the field with 43 pts at the weekend, Garvin Godfrey (10) kept his good form of late going taking the runner up spot with 40 pts just ahead of Martin Foley (22) who also had 40 pts, the gross prize went to Keith Patterson with 28 pts.

Thursday Club
A sure sign that the Summer season is behind us when the Thursday Club has got underway,  week one went to Dr Ciaran Kelly with 39 pts with Seamus McPhilemy the runner up, with 38 pts and Frankie Gallagher in third with 37 pts.

Week two was reduced to 15 holes due to the weather with Foncie McNally taking the honours with 35 pts winning on break of tie from Stewart McFeeters and Pascal McGillian both with the same total, new members to the Thursday club are most welcome.

Monday Club
The Monday Club Team event has also kicked off with Pat Corry, Declan McDonnell, Aiden Corry and Enda McDonnell taking last week’s event with 92 pts.

Club Matchplay Competitions
All the club Matchplay competitions have now been completed, The Jones Cup was retained by Stephen McCay for the second consecutive year defeating Freddie Wilson in a very close encounter with the match going to the final hole.
The Gallagher Memorial Cup went to Patrick McCrossan who defeated Kevin Neeson two and one and the Lawson Cup went to John Brolly who beat Martin Foley also two and one.
The Worcester Cup went to Imelda Doherty and Liam Corry who beat Margaret Bonner and Vice –Captain Sean McIntyre 2 up also in a very close final.

Ladies Closing Day Scramble
The Ladies section held their final day scramble recently with the winning trio emerging as Lady Captain Norma Brogan, Geraldine McCrory, and Patricia Kelly with 29 pts, with the runners up Lisa Patton Adeline Shiels and Imelda Doherty with 27 pts, third went to Shauna Stewart Maeve Corry and Lorna Duffy with 26 pts.
The Ladies section golfer of the year has also concluded with Jennifer Rouse the runaway winner with an eye catching 98 pts, the runner up was Caroline Connolly with 54 pts with Lisa Patton third with 52 pts.

Our under 16 junior boys will have to make the journey to North West G.C as their final on Saturday past was not completed.  When bad light halted play Strabane had lost the first two matches and tied the last one, this match must be decided at tie holes and if the local lads can win that one the entire match will have finished equal, and a further sudden death playoff would then be needed to decide the destination of the trophy so good luck to the boys involved in that game.

Thursday 13th – Thursday Club week 3
Saturday 15th – 18 holes qualifier
Sunday 16th – Winter Cup
Monday 17th – Monday Club.

There is a charity event in the clubhouse on Saturday 16th October, in support of Ronan McKee who is travelling to teach in African Schools.  Rhythm and Blues band D.D & The Delta Boys providing the music from 10.00pm admission is £5.00 and a wonderful night of music is in store, all welcome.

Strabane Golf Club Report – W/E 25th September 2011

“Golfer of the Year Title Shared”

For the first time ever, Strabane has joint Golfer of the Year winners.  Nicky Patton and Micky Neeson emerged on top with 94 points each for the 2011 season, edging out long-time leader, Darren Crawford, who finished 3rd on 90pts. At the half-way stage of the year it was Patton who led among the three eventual leaders but with one month to go things had changed and he trailed both Crawford and Neeson who sat on 88pts and 80pts respectively. But it was Patton who put in the strong finish, accumulating 27 points in the last four weeks to catch up with Neeson, who must have thought he had done enough when he secured 12 points on the last day. Congratulations to both winners on their consistent performance throughout 2011.

McHugh’s Oil Open

That man Enda Kennedy was there again with an excellent 3 under round 66 to win the Club Championship by 6 shots from Sean Forbes on 72. Ben Corry took 3rd on 74.  Garvin Godfrey continued a run of good form with an impressive 62 to take the first net prize. Seamus Friel took 2nd and Noel McConnell 3rd both with 66pts.
Other results: 4th, Kieran O’Neill; 5th, Darrell Meadows; 2nd Gross, Sean Forbes; 3rd Gross, Ben Corry;  Nines, Declan McDonnell and Matt Keyes.

On a soft wet course only two players bettered forty on the day with Damien Carey securing second place on 41 pts. Joe Elliott and Brian Brolly took 3rd and 4th respectively on 38pts and 37pts, whilst Ronnie Wiley warmed up for Sunday as he claimed 5th also on 37pts. In another good performance the in-form 3-handicapper Darren Crawford claimed the gross prize with 33pts. With only two competitions remaining, Darren leads the Golfer of the Year race by 6pts. Paul McGill and Brian Kelly were 2nd with 46pts with Denis Porter and George Turner in 3rd on 45pts.

Conor Sharkey showed a consistent form this week also as the 8-handicapper took 2nd place with an excellent 42 pts ahead of his win on Sunday. Once again there was a high turnout of visiting golfers to Strabane and it was a good day for them as Letterkenny’s Conor Friel took 3rd with 41pts and Rosapenna’s Enda Kennedy took the Gross with 38pts. The actual Visitor’s prize went to Moyola’s Gerry Martin with 39pts.

The Ladies Bertie Colhoun was played on Tuesday and Patricia Kelly came home in first place with 38pts. The categories were won by Mandy Coyne and Caroline Connolly who is really enjoying a purple patch at present.

Darren Crawford’s Donegal Senior League team have a narrow lead over Ballybofey going into the second leg next Sunday.
